Empirically Informed Social Work: We rigorously advance empirical research that impacts the social work knowledge base. By translating and applying evidence, we continually transform practice and policy across multiple systems.

Goals To prepare B.S.W., M.S.W. and Ph.D. students to practice with integrity and attain multi-level competency while working to promote well-being and build community.

To conduct, disseminate, and translate theoretical and empirically informed scholarship and research that impacts the social work knowledge base and transforms practice and policy.

To promote social, economic, and environmental justice through service at local, state, national, and international levels.

Social work education began at KU in 1937. The Master of Social Work program, established in Lawrence and in Kansas City in 1946, has been continuously accredited since 1948. The Bachelor of Social Work degree, awarded since 1971, was one of the first in the nation to receive accredited status.

THE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WELFARE At present, the School offers the complete BSW program on the Lawrence campus, the BSW degree-completion program on the Edwards Campus in Overland Park; the MSW program on the Lawrence campus, on the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park, and on the Fort Hays State University and Garden City Community College campuses; and the doctoral program on the Lawrence campus. The doctoral program admitted its first students in 1981 and attracts national and international students who seek the conceptual, analytical, and research skills required for success in academic research institutions globally. The School’s PhD graduates span the globe and serve the profession as faculty members, university administrators, and researchers. The Council on Social Work Education reaccredited the BSW and MSW programs in 2010 and our Master of Social Work program is ranked 12th among public universities according to US News & World Report.

The School recently formed the Toni Johnson Office of Race and Social Justice to foster an inclusive and supportive educational environment for students, faculty and staff engaged in racial and social justice. The School consistently attracts a high level of applications for its academic programs and enjoys a persistent demand for continuing education opportunities from its alumni and community partners. Faculty members are graduates of prestigious universities located throughout the United States and are drawn to Kansas to work with colleagues who are deeply committed to fulfilling the teaching, research, and service missions of the profession.

The School sponsors several collaborative research centers: (a) Center for Children and Families; (b) Center for Research on Aging and Disability Options; (c) Initiative on Spirituality and Social Work Research. With a research portfolio composed of state, federal, and private funding, faculty and research staff have a longstanding history of collaborative work with state and community agencies and have received widespread recognition for their transformative research and policy work both in the state and nationally.

The School also has a history of more than 25 years as developer and leader of the strengths perspective. It has had statewide, national, and international impacts for this and other innovations, especially through its research centers and initiatives.

MSW PROGRAM offered on four campuses in Kansas BSW PROGRAM offered on two campuses in Kansas DOCTORAL PROGRAM In 2016, 37 peer-reviewed journal articles, authored or co-authored by Ph.D. students, were accepted for publication and 34 different national and international conference presentations and posters were presented.

Founded in 1865, KU is a designated Carnegie comprehensive doctoral / very high research activity university and one of only 34 public members of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU). ON & OFF CAMPUS

POSITION DESCRIPTION The University of Kansas (KU), School of Social Welfare is seeking dynamic candidates for two tenure-track appointments as assistant professors to begin in Fall 2018. We are seeking candidates who will contribute to the School’s vision of transformational social work education and research in an environment dedicated to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. The KU School of Social Welfare is housed on the University of Kansas Lawrence campus offering BSW, MSW, and PhD programs. We also offer a degree-completion BSWprogram and a complete MSW program at the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park, a suburb of Kansas City, as well as the Western Kansas MSW Program on the Fort Hays State University campus and Garden City Community College campus.

Candidates should have a viable agenda for scholarship in the areas of aging, health, or disabilities; however, candidates with a strong research agenda in child welfare, poverty, or adult/child mental health will be considered. Preference will be given to candidates with two years of social work practice experience beyond the MSW degree or experience with teaching. The successful candidate will have experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion in social work education; have been involved in community engaged research, teaching, and/or service; and demonstrate a commitment to deliberate and continuing examination of social conditions and solutions.

The successful candidates must be eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start of the position.

Standard workload expectations are as follows: 40% teaching; 40% research; and 20% service.

The School provides a variety of teaching opportunities at our Lawrence, Edwards, and Western Kansas campuses as well as multiple formats including traditional, classroom-based instruction and a hybrid format, which combines classroom-based instruction and online classes.

Required Qualifications

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

An earned graduate degree in social work and a doctorate in social work or a closely aligned field. If ABD, the dissertation must be successfully defended by the position start date.

Evidence of the ability to teach in at least one core curriculum area. We are particularly interested in candidates who can teach direct social work practice.

Demonstrated potential for developing an innovative body of research and scholarship

•

Demonstrated potential for securing external research funding.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

The School is seeking a candidate with a national reputation in the field and a well-developed research agenda in one of the following broadly defined areas: aging, health, disabilities, child welfare, poverty, or adult/child mental health. The successful candidate will have experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion in social work education; demonstrated leadership skills essential for mentoring masters and doctoral students; have been involved in community engaged research, teaching, and/or service; and demonstrate a commitment to deliberate and continuing examination of social conditions and solutions. We seek candidates with demonstrated track records of collegial teamwork and departmental citizenship as well as the interest and capacity to assume a range of leadership roles.

Qualifications include two years of social work practice experience beyond the M.S.W. degree, experience and interest in curricular innovations, and the ability to successfully coordinate and lead a team of faculty and staff.

The School provides a variety of teaching opportunities at our Lawrence, Edwards, and Western Kansas campuses as well as multiple formats including traditional, classroom-based instruction and a hybrid format, which combines classroom-based instruction and online classes.
