WELCOME
Welcome to 15th Kurra-Wirra Annual Northern Sale
Welcome to Kurra-Wirra’s annual bull sale, where we are proud to present the largest and most even draft of bulls in the history of our stud. This year, we are excited to offer an exceptional lineup, featuring our most extensive selection of Angus bulls to date.
This year marks 18 years of Kurra-Wirra breeding Slick Angus and Angus cattle, with this being our 15th annual sale. Over the years, we have carefully crossed Senepol with Red Angus to develop a full Bos taurus animal that combines the carcass quality, maternal strength, and performance of Red Angus with the slick coat, heat tolerance, and parasite resistance. A driving force in our breeding program has been the ability to test for the hugely beneficial Slick Coat gene. This genomic testing, facilitated through Zoetis, has allowed us to dramatically increase the Red Angus and Angus breed content in our Slick Angus cattle while maintaining the slick coat gene.
The benefits of the slick coat gene are well-documented and widely researched. It contributes to enhanced milk production, increased grazing times, improved tick resistance, and overall better performance. This gene’s effectiveness is particularly evident in managing heat stress, as cattle with slick coats can better tolerate higher temperatures. For context, the critical temperature for heat stress in typical cattle is often cited as around 27-30°C, making slick-coated cattle more resilient in warmer conditions. While maintaining the slick gene, each generation at Kurra-Wirra is becoming more Angusdominant, with higher fertility, lower birth weights, and consistently improved performance.
Temperament is taken very seriously at Kurra-Wirra as it is an OH&S issue for the entire beef industry and also is highly correlated to meat quality and weight gains. All animals are tested for docility at yearling time and culled appropriately. Every calf at KW is birth weighed which we allow the cow to be protective of her calf but any hint of madness she’s gone!
Our bulls are bred from an 800-strong cow herd, raised under tough commercial conditions to truly test their genetic traits. This ensures that only the most profitable genetics remain in our herd. Female selection is rigorous, with strict criteria that include annual pregnancy, unassisted calving at two years of age, favourable temperament, sound conformation and structure, and strong genetic performance in birth weight, growth, and carcass traits.
At Kurra-Wirra, we focus on type and structure first, followed by above-average genetic performance – never in reverse. To achieve this, we extensively use AI with proven Angus and Red Angus sires, ensuring that we deliver the most commercially relevant and profitable bulls to the industry.
Every sale bull at Kurra-Wirra has undergone a thorough fertility examination, including a full crush-side semen motility test, palpation of reproductive organs, inspection of the penis for warts and abnormalities, and scrotal circumference measurement. These assessments were conducted by Paul Kenny of Paul Kenny Cattle Breeding Services Pty Ltd and we thank him very much for his time and efforts.
We extend our thanks to James Lilburne for his support of the Kurra-Wirra program, a partnership that has extended for over two decades. A big thank you also goes to Beau Frame and the entire Frame Rural team for their support, not just today but throughout the year. Additionally, we appreciate Matt Sowden from Five Star Creative Promotions for producing the bull videos, which will be available for viewing on Stocklive by the 16th of September.
Inspections are welcome anytime, so please contact Simon Close or James Lilburne if you require further information or assistance.
We look forward to seeing you on sale day. Simon, Robert and the Close Family.

AUSTRALIA’S $PROFIT INDEX
The unique $Profit breeding value ranking system, not only compares all breeds equally, but compares hybrid composite multi breed animals as well.
What makes this $Profit selection even more unique is, in addition to the standard traits such as birth, weaning weights and carcase assessments which are revenue traits, it also looks at feed efficiency and cow maintenance; which can impact costs significantly. The biggest improvement is its balance; it recognises the benefits of hybrid vigour in a breeding system, and does not assume “more is better”. Traits are not linear, and realising this and that more is not better is an important component of this index.
Explanation for across breed EBVs (ABE)
Across Breed EBVs are published for all the Senegus bulls in this catalogue. These Across Breed EBVs predict differences expected in performance of future progeny of these bulls. All the Across Breed EBVs can be used to compare the Senegus within this catalogue.
Birth Weight (BW) ABE is the weight of progeny at birth, expressed in kg.
Weaning Weight (WW) ABE is the weight of progeny at weaning, expressed in kg.
Yearling Weight (YW) ABE is the weight of progeny at yearling age (12 months of age) expressed in kg.
Milk (MK) ABE
This is the best indicator of a bull’s daughter ability to milk. It measures the difference in weaning weight between bulls’ progeny solely due to milk.
Scrotal (SC) ABE is calculated from the circumference of the bulls’ scrotum.
Back Fat (BF) ABE is the ultrasound based ABE for back fat in mm.
We will continue to work with ABRI for Breedplan Analysis EBVs on the pure bred registered animals, and now can also offer an additional selection tool, $Profit Index.
To deliver positive outcomes to livestock producers, and in particular being able to offer our customers the best available global genetics, providing a $Profit Index is the perfect tool. By linking our herd in, and comparing them to 1.4 million plus animals currently on the system, buyers can be confident we are comparing apples with apples.
Rib Eye (RE) ABE is the ultrasound based ABE for rib eye area, expressed in cm squared.
Marbling (MB) ABE is the ultrasound based ABE for marbling.
Carcase Weight (CW) ABE is the expected progeny differences in bulls progeny for carcase weight, expressed in kgs.
Mature Weight (MW) ABE is the predicted mature weight of daughters. This ABE is the best indicator of daughter size.
Intake (IN) ABE
Is an estimate of the amount of feed that the bull’s progeny will consume over a 112 day feeding period. Animals with lower IN ABE figures will consume less throughout their life.
Feeder Gain (FG) ABE predicts the feedlot efficiency of the bulls’ offspring. Bulls with lower FG ABE figures will produce progeny that feed more efficiently.
ABOUT THE COWS - KW BREEDING PROGRAM
Kurra-Wirra bulls are bred from an 800 strong head cow herd, run under tough commercial conditions. We do this to apply pressure on each cow and to test the capacity of her genetic traits so the ‘cream can rise to the top’. This allows only the most profitable genetics to remain within the herd. Females are subject to a rigorous selection process. Culling of females is strict and done under these conditions:
• Cows MUST get in calf each year: No exceptions,
• Heifer must calve unassisted at 2 years of age,
• Temperament must be favourable. We allow the cow to be protective of calf but any hint of madness, she’s gone!
• Conformation and structure are measured and culled upon before entry into the stud,
• Must pass on strong genetics in relation to birth weight, growth rates and carcass traits.
Our selection criteria are first and foremost focused on type and structure, and then on above average genetic performance - never in reverse. We AI a significant number of females to proven sires from the best Angus and Red Angus bulls into our herd. This is to ensure we deliver the most commercially relevant and most profitable bulls to the industry. Our primary focus is consistently centred on breeding market-oriented bulls that not only elevate the beef industry but also improve the profitability for our clients.

INTRODUCING THE SUPERIOR QUALITIES OF SLICK ANGUS
For the past two decades, Kurra-Wirra has focused on breeding cattle that impact positively and profitably on the Australian beef industry. By blending the robust characteristics of Angus with the Senepol’s heat tolerance and parasite resistance, slick-coat gene, we’ve developed cattle that are ideally suited for the northern climates. Our kw. Slick Angus cattle has superior fertility, growth, and carcass quality, all while retaining the vital slick coat gene for optimal performance in the heat. These bulls provide a very distinct advantage to commercial beef breeding operations in Northern Australia, focused on increased production and efficiency as well as higher value carcases from hot northern environments.
This deliberate genetic combination ensures that our kw. Slick Angus bulls have higher fertility rates and accelerated calf growth, allowing for earlier weaning as they reach heavier weights at younger ages. This accelerated growth decreases the time calves need to graze before being sold, boosting profitability, reducing methane production and carbon footprint which provides a more environmentally sustainable solution.
We call this new breed, the ‘kw. Slick Angus’.

OPENING UP MARKETS
Our cattle not only fetch Angus premium prices and are suitable for northern exports but also experience high demand in feedlots and store markets throughout Australia, with progeny commanding a flatbacked premium crossed with Bos Indicus cows.
SUPERIOR FERTILITY
High libido with the ability to breed in diverse and often challenging environments, combined with high conception rates, ensuring a reliable and efficient production system.
EARLY MATURITY
Reach maturity quicker than many other breeds. This early maturity allows for earlier breeding and shorter generation intervals, enhancing productivity reaching target weights at a younger age.
MEAT QUALITY
Premium price cuts that exhibit tenderness, texture, flavour, marbling and meat yield.
REDUCTION IN HEAT STRESS
Our cattle maintain a lower internal body temperature, minimising the impact of heat stress in temperatures exceeding 28 degrees. This trait contributes to enhanced fertility and increased production. 1
TICK & PARASITE RESISTANCE
Estimated on-farm cost of ticks to the Australian cattle industry (production losses plus control costs) is approximately $146m per year. Slick Angus is a tick resistant breed – an efficient method to control this parasite. 2
