ALDACO'S MEXICAN CUISINE

Breathtaking doesn’t begin to describe the sweeping views of Stone Oak offered from this patio, which happens to be perched on one of the highest points in the city. If you can close your dropped jaw long enough to order, you can’t go wrong with the tamal de camarón topped with luscious cream piquant sauce (and an avocado margarita, of course).

THE HOPPY MONK

A huge tap wall and expansive patio with hulking community tables are the main draws for the Hoppy Monk, located on the north side of Loop 1604. But the food menu, with Southwestern favorites like shrimp and grilled avocado agauchile, queso fundido, and rabbit barbacoa tacos, hardly plays second fiddle.

LA TUNA GRILL BEXAR PUB

Nothing is better on a spring day than pairing craft beer with comfort food at this casual hangout. The digs aren’t fancy, just some picnic tables and a few scattered umbrellas, but you’ll have your eyes closed anyway when you first bite into chef Luis Colón’s legendary Folc Burger.

SANGRIA ON THE BURG

The 2017 San Antonio CultureMap Tastemaker Award winner for Best New Restaurant has something else to brag about: a cozy side outdoor dining area perfect for sipping a signature margarita. But be aware that the drinks do have a kick, so you’ll want to pair them with pork belly tacos and an order of velvety triple mac and cheese.

SUPPER With a view of the river, adorable cafe chairs, and immaculate landscaping, the patio at Supper feels like something Gwyneth Paltrow would have just outside her back door. It’s especially lovely during the breakfast hours, when you can eat chef John Brand’s lemon curdtopped buttermilk pancakes or a simple grapefruit with burnt honey while updating your lifestyle blog.

If you ask us, barbecue should be enjoyed in the open air, where you can eat with your hands without anyone giving you side-eye.

With a huge shaded patio and a playscape for the kids, Jason Dady’s smokehouse has the vibe of a family reunion, but his brisket and baby back ribs trump anything you have ever fired up on your grill.

This neighborhood favorite’s cozy outdoor dining area is guaranteed to put you in a good mood. The staff is friendly, the food is approachable, and the clientele is a cross-section of San Antonio. Order a chickenfried steak with a side of addictive rosemary roasted potatoes.

Though popular for brunches and happy hours and other daytime occasions, this St. Mary’s jewel is most beautiful at night when the pendant lamps are glistening. If you need a reason to linger past sunset, just order another famous Chismosa.

HOME DESIGN EXPERTS PREDICT HOT TRENDS AND FADING FADS FOR 2018

By Lindsey Wilson As seen on CultureMap.com Be sure to give your bar cart one last good hurrah this New Year’s Eve, because once 2018 hits it will apparently no longer be on-trend. That’s what the annual Zillow Home Trend Forecast predicts, along with five fresh home decor must-haves and two other fads that are so 2017.

Fashionable homeowners will be scoping out floral prints in bold, contrasting colors in 2018, especially for large decor pieces such as drapes and chairs. Afraid of too much change? Get funky with throw pillows.

Or look down to make a change, with statement floors replacing statement walls. Brightly colored geometric tile, light-colored herringbone-style hardwoods — it doesn’t matter, so long as it’s striking. This trend will be especially big in bathrooms and laundry rooms, helping small spaces pop without adding clutter.

“Warming up” is a big theme for 2018, with light and medium wood cabinets making a comeback (extra points for flat fronts) and moody neutral color palettes (think warm reds to caramel browns) showing up both on walls and in artwork.

What should be the finishing touch? Matte metal, whether it’s found in the light fixtures or kitchen hardware. Matte metal drawer pulls are a beautiful complement to those lighter wood cabinets, and are a step up from shiny silver or gold.

On the outs are white kitchens, which Zillow has recently found sell for less money (perhaps because they are so hard to keep clean). “From painting island cabinets a navy blue to contrasting white countertops with medium or light wood cabinets, adding color and texture in the kitchen can help make the space feel more comfortable and inviting,” say the experts at Zillow.

Another once-popular trend that’s due for a decline is succulents.

Though the plants are low-maintenance and often colorful, Zillow thinks homeowners will seek out other, leafier options.

And don’t toss that bar cart just yet — it could have another life as a coffee cart. “While perfectly staged bar carts look beautiful, they often go unused on a daily basis, taking up space and collecting dust,” says Zillow.

“Instead, experts predict a shift toward coffee carts, which can be equally trendy but far more practical.”
