What Is Panhellenic? We’ve all seen the movies and TikToks. We know that sororities are filled with enthusiastic members wearing matching t-shirts, living together in beautiful houses. We are so excited for you to experience firsthand how the Panhellenic experience at KU exceeds expectations, smashes stereotypes, and provides a community unlike any other- one of support, opportunity, belonging, and personal development that continues well beyond the college experience. The Panhellenic Association (PHA) is just one of the four governing councils at the University of Kansas. PHA was founded in the spring of 1905 with the purpose of increasing the influence of sororities in college life, improving the relationships between the members of different chapters, and ensuring dignified methods of recruiting, pledging, and initiation. Today, our campus has 11 recognized chapters that strive for excellence in the four founding pillars of Leadership, Scholarship, Friendship, and Service. The University of Kansas Panhellenic Association is an inclusive community which encourages diversity and inclusion of members from all types of backgrounds and beliefs. As a new member, you will experience many new things while getting acclimated with your sorority and KU. Each chapter has a different program specifically designed for new members to help transition them into sorority and college life. New members will learn about the history and traditions of their chapters, as well as skills that will make for an easy transition into college life. We can hardly wait for you to learn about all the ways in which #PHALeadsOnward!

Letter From President I became a part of the Panhellenic community at the beginning of my Freshman year during Fall Formal Recruitment. To be quite transparent, I came into the process with many reservations. However, pushing myself out of my comfort zone and participating in recruitment has impacted my time at KU greatly and has proved to be one of the best decisions I could have made. I not only feel a special connection with the members in my chapter, but with the community as a whole through the relations I have made with members of Sorority and Fraternity Life. The Panhellenic community has aided me in breaking out of my shell, provided me with leadership opportunities, and has instilled in me a confidence I didn’t know I had. My advice to you all as Potential New Members (PNMs) is to come into the recruitment process with an open mind. Although it is incredibly important to search for chapters that align with your personal values, you may be pleasantly surprised to find your home not where you originally had planned. I also encourage you to get to know other PNMs! Some of my dearest friends aren’t members of my home chapter, but members I met during the week! It’s nice to go into the upcoming semester and see some familiar faces from your time as a PNM on Jayhawk Boulevard. Every single Panhellenic chapter at KU offers an abundance of opportunities and enables its members to achieve excellence in every area of their lives. I am incredibly excited for each of you to be going through the recruitment process. Scholarship

Panhellenic members are students first, and at a highly-recognized research institution like KU, we hold academics in the highest regard. For the past 40 years, the all Sorority & Fraternity Life GPA has exceeded the average university GPA. Panhellenic provides programming and resources such as tutors and mentorship programs to promote strong study habits and academic improvement. Additionally, each chapter has a minimum GPA that they are required to uphold, which should be kept in mind as you navigate the Recruitment process.

Leadership

Joining the Panhellenic community opens students up to a wide variety of leadership opportunities that will benefit them on and off campus, well beyond their college years. Within individual chapters, members can hold appointed positions, serve on committees, and be elected to their chapter’s Executive Board, strengthening their interpersonal skills while honing their own personal leadership styles. Additionally, members of the Panhellenic community are encouraged to get involved across campus, serving as leaders in a variety of clubs, organizations, academic societies, and governing bodies.

Core Values

Involvement in the Panhellenic community means giving back to something greater than yourself. Each of our 11 chapters foster strong relationships with local and national charities, organizing a variety of philanthropic events to benefit meaningful causes and foster personal growth. All Panhellenic members are required to complete at least 10 hours of community service each semester, and resources are made readily available to chapters to find innovative ways of supporting the Lawrence community, such as volunteering opportunities through food banks, animal shelters, elementary schools, and more.

Friendship

Belonging and community are the cornerstones for each of our 11 Panhellenic chapters. While each chapter is built upon their own unique founding values, our strong interfraternal relations provide a network of support that will be here for you for 4 years and beyond. Programming such as formals, date parties, retreats, activities, and more help make KU’s large campus feel smaller, forging strong bonds between members from all walks of life. Within these events, the wellbeing of members is top of mind, and our organizations work tirelessly to ensure that all social endeavors are held in a safe and responsible manner.

Dear Potential New Member, On behalf of the Panhellenic Association, welcome to the University of Kansas! I am thrilled that you have taken an interest in our primary recruitment experience. Our 11 chapters are made up of over 2,000 individuals from all over the country with the desire to make a difference in the world around them. Each person within our community is celebrated for their differences, perspectives, ideas, and contributions to the University of Kansas and beyond. On a personal note, during my time in high school, I never thought joining a sorority would be in my future. Coming to KU as an outof-state student was daunting, and I was unsure of how I was ever going to find “my people” on such a large campus. I took a leap of faith and participated in Panhellenic recruitment, just to give it a chance. As I move into my senior year of college, I can truthfully say that this experience has allowed me to grow in my confidence, foster lifelong friendships, and discover my own leadership abilities. Being a part of a Panhellenic chapter has been an incredibly rewarding experience and it is my greatest hope that you find your home in one of our amazing chapters as well. Potential New Member (PNM): That’s you! A PNM is anyone who is eligible to participate in Formal or Informal Panhellenic Recruitment. Active Member: A sorority member currently in college who has been initiated by their chapter. Alumna: An initiated sorority member who is no longer active in a collegiate chapter. Legacy: A PNM who is directly related to an alumnae or active member in a particular sorority. SFL: Sorority and Fraternity Life. Letter of Recommendation: A written letter or statement from an alumna introducing and recommending a PNM for their respective sorority. Philanthropy: A national and/or local charity that a sorority sponsors, donating time and money through service to promote human welfare. Preferencing: The process at the end of each round where you will list the chapters you wish to attend back for the next round. You will “preference” the chapters you wish to return to and then preference the ones you wish to not re-attend. Remember that this is a mutual selection process. This means there is a chance that you will not be invited back to the chapters you prefer, and there is a chance that you do get invited back to chapters you preferred to not re-attend. MRABA (Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement): A document each Potential New Member fills out and signs immediately following Preference Day stating their membering preferences. The Potential New Member lists the sororities that they would accept a bid from in their order of preference. This is a binding agreement, stating that the PNM is willing to accept a bid from any sorority that they list.

Dictionary Single Intentional Preference: When a PNM attends more than one event on Preference Day but limits their membership selections by not listing all of their options on the MRABA. Quota: The number of new members a sorority may pledge during Formal or Informal Recruitment. Snap Bid: A procedure used at the close of bid matching to help chapters reach quota prior to bid distribution. Bid: A formal invitation to join a sorority or fraternity. Continuous Open Recruitment (COR): The period throughout the year where chapters can recruit new members in a more informal Recruitment process. Informal Recruitment: A formalized period of Continuous Open Recruitment, beginning with a Kickoff Event hosted by the Panhellenic board to meet chapters.

Meet Your Rho Gammas As part of your experience in the Formal Recruitment process, you will be connected with Rho Gammas, who are current members of the Panhellenic community who have disaffiliated from their respective chapters so that they can give unbiased support and advice to potential new members throughout the week while representing PHA as a whole. These members have gone through a rigorous interview and training process to be fully prepared to help you to the best of their ability. They will be able to answer many of your questions about Recruitment and Panhellenic, and even about being a KU student. Their main purpose is to guide you through Recruitment as a confidant and help you through any problems you may have or hard decisions you may face. Rho Gammas are obligated to keep all of your questions and concerns confidential and will remain neutral to all chapters throughout all of Formal Recruitment. Once you are officially signed up for Fall Formal Recruitment, a Rho Gamma will reach out to you to answer any questions you may have! They will also be there to greet you when you move to Lawrence, ready to guide you through the excitement and hustle of Recruitment. But don’t think of them as only a guide; they are here to be a friend, too. College can be tough and confusing. Recruitment is only one week, but they will be there to support you far beyond that. Rho Gammas are here to be an automatic, trustworthy friend and supporter. Yes, they have gone through Recruitment themselves and can be a great source of knowledge about all things Panhellenic, but they are also great people to have as your friend. They are here for YOU!

Recruitment is such a special time to meet new people, make strong connections, and ultimately find your home in the Panhellenic community! It may seem daunting to go through this process alone, but don’t worry, Rho Gammas are here for you! They have removed themselves from their sorority to be a completely unbiased and confidential source for you to lean on for support. Whether it’s helping you sort through your thoughts about different chapters, answering questions about sorority life, or pumping you up between rounds, a Rho Gamma’s goal is to make sure you are feeling your best for each round. This year’s Rho Gammas have been thoroughly interviewed, selected, and trained to be the best support system for you. Most importantly, Rho Gammas are eager to build relationships with you. They are here to be your friend just as much as they are to be your recruitment guide. Whatever support you may need - emotional or mental - they are here for YOU! All of our Rho Gammas were in your shoes not too long ago and want you to have the best recruitment experience possible.

They are your biggest cheerleaders! Once you register for recruitment, a Rho Gamma will reach out to you, introduce themself, and answer any questions you have before coming to campus in August. Be sure to check your messages, because they will also be sending important recruitment-related info as well as help you prepare for your arrival to KU. Our Rho Gammas are so eager to chat with you so please don’t be shy to respond. Feel free to ask them anything regarding recruitment, Panhellenic life, or KU in general!

The opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive to live.

Bill of Rights All PNMs have the right to: Be treated as an individual with the utmost respect. Be fully informed about the Recruitment process as soon as all details are known. Have inviolable confidentiality when sharing information with Rho Gammas. Make a decision and accept full responsibility for the results of the decision. Ask questions and receive true and objective answers from Rho Gammas. Be treated as a capable and mature person without being patronized. Make informed choices without undue pressure from active members or anyone else involved in the Recruitment process. Have a positive, safe, and enriching Recruitment and new member period.

COde of Conduct I, ______ , a Potential New Member (PNM) participating in the University of Kansas Panhellenic Fall Formal Recruitment in the year 2022, hereby agree to abide by the following rules: __ A PNM shall not give a promise, verbal or written, to join or enter into any sorority before bids are issued through Panhellenic at the end of Fall Formal Recruitment. __ A PNM shall consult their Rho Gamma and a member of the Panhellenic Recruitment Team before withdrawing from Fall Formal Recruitment. __ A PNM shall report any violation of the recruiting guidelines to a Rho Gamma or member of recruitment staff. __ All PNMs shall accept the maximum number of invitations that they receive after each invitational round of Formal Recruitment. Intentionally not attending every event is an automatic removal from the process. __ It is in accordance with the dignity and good standing of a PNM: - To avoid disparaging remarks about any chapter, sorority, or non-sorority member, especially where such remarks can be overheard or observed by others. - To not inquire about a Rho Gamma’s chapter affiliation. - To avoid any negative remarks to any chapter and/or chapter members either verbally or in writing. - To facilitate friendly relations between KU Jayhawks, sorority, and non-sorority members alike. - To realize that Fall Formal Recruitment is not a competition and rather an opportunity to build community through mutual respect. - To prevent and stand against any negative publicity regarding the Greek Community. - To consider an organization carefully and fully with an open mind. - To be a positive representation of the KU Panhellenic community on social media.

__ Throughout Formal Recruitment and for the 24 hours following Bid Day, a PNM shall not consume or be in the presence of alcohol or other substances. __ All first-year and transfer PNMs shall participate in ALL university sponsored activities throughout Hawk Week. __ All PNMs will adhere to the University of Kansas’ and the Panhellenic Association’s non-discrimination policies. __ All PNMs may not drive to recruitment events nor use cellular phones during the course of recruitment rounds, unless on a break. __ No text messages, phone calls, Snapchats, Facebook/Instagram messages/ posts, Tweets, etc. may be exchanged between Sorority Members and PNMs during the Formal Recruitment Process.

Schedule Saturday August 13th

Move-In Day

All Potential New Members will check in and move into their residence halls. If you live off-campus, you will still check in! Your recruitment counselors should be walking around, ready and excited to introduce themselves to you. That evening, all PNMs will meet with their Recruitment group and Recruitment Counselors to discuss plans for the following day.

Sunday August 14th

Orientation

Monday & Tuesday August 15th + 16th

Open House

All PNMs will attend Orientation, and hear from other guest speakers throughout the day. That evening, PNMs will be able to participate in activities to know their Recruitment group and Recruitment Counselors better! You will also participate in Jayhawks Give A Flock hosted by Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Center (SAPEC).

This event is spread across two days. PNMs will meet all 11 chapters during this round. This round is a meet and greet, with short 20 minute conversations with chapter members. Open House consists of a lot of “small talk”, so one tip when preferencing is to remember the conversations you felt were deeper!

Wednesday August 17th

Philanthropy

For this round, the maximum number of chapters that a PNM will have the chance to visit is eight. These 25 minute events are based around values, service, and the chapter’s philanthropy. Be sure to ask any questions you have about requirements for service and study hours at all the chapters!

Thursday August 18th

Sisterhood

Friday August 19th

Preference

For this round, the maximum number of chapters that a PNM will have the chance to visit is five. These 40 minute events will center around friendship and daily life as a chapter member. Chapters will also host house tours on this day, and will be giving financial transparency presentations regarding their member dues. Ask questions about social events, living in the chapter house, and anything else that you need to know before preferencing. Going from five chapters to two is a big difference, so be intentional and authentic in your decision making!

For this round, the maximum number of chapters that a PNM will have the chance to visit is two. Preference Day rounds are 60 minutes long and are all about finding where you feel the best connection. Each chapter will hold ceremonies unique to their own values and traditions. This is a very sentimental time to many chapter members, and you will hopefully get a sense of the bonds and sisterhood within each chapter. This day will bring a close to your Recruitment Week and will bring you closer to where you belong. Be yourself, trust your gut, and ask any last questions you may have.

Saturday August 20th

Bid Day

Rounds are over, you have finished preferencing, and now it’s finally time to find out which chapter is yours to call home! All PNMs will arrive at a specified area with their Recruitment groups, and each will receive a sealed envelope. There will be a designated time to open your envelopes to reveal your Bid Card, and also to find out which chapters your Rho Gammas belong to. After opening your envelope, you will gather around your chapter’s designated area and go to the chapter’s Bid Day festivities. This is a fun day to get to know your new chapter and make friends before the start of the semester!

Open House For Open House, you will be provided a t-shirt! This is paid for in your recruitment registration fee. Pair this shirt with whatever you are comfortable and confident in. Many PNMs choose fun shorts, skirts, pants, and any other bottoms that compliment the shirt and represent their personalities. You will be walking a lot this day, so be conscious of what shoes you choose to wear!

Philanthropy The theme is “KU Gameday”! Wear an outfit that you would wear to a Jayhawk football or basketball game. Many people choose to dress more casual for game days with a KU t-shirt and jeans, while others like to wear dresses. There is always so much variety on game days with outfits, so use this day as a chance to show off your personal style and be yourself!

Sisterhood For Sisterhood round, dress in something you might wear to a spring/summer brunch. This can be a sundress, romper, nice top and bottoms, or anything else dressier than days prior. Remember that you will be attending house tours on this day, so wear shoes that you would be comfortable going up and down stairs in!

Preference Preference round is the most formal day of recruitment. Choose something you might wear to a summer wedding, graduation, or another special occasion event. Most people wear dresses, jumpsuits, rompers, pants suits, dress shirts with pants, or anything else nicer than the previous day.

LetterS of Recommendation Recommendations are letters or statements from a sorority alumna recommending a Potential New Member for membership. The recommendation process varies among each sorority, but alumnae will be familiar with their own sorority’s requirements. While it is common to send multiple recommendations to one sorority from separate alumnae, it is unnecessary to exceed more than two.

Letters of Recommendation are not required to participate in Fall Formal Recruitment, however, some chapters do find it helpful in getting to know a woman.

Although there is no official deadline for when letters of recommendation must be received, all alumnae are encouraged to submit an online form no later than August 5, 2022 to ensure that they are received prior to the start of recruitment. Open Recruitment

Continuous Open Recruitment, also known as COR, is an informal recruitment process that will begin immediately after Bid Day of Fall Formal Recruitment. Continuous Open Recruitment will end on stop day of the fall semester and remain on the first day of the spring semester. Any member is eligible for COR if they are a current full time student at the University of Kansas and have not signed an MRABA since the last formal recruitment. If Fall Formal Recruitment does not work out, COR is another great option. This is a more informal process compared to Fall Formal Recruitment. During COR, both chapters and potential new members have the opportunity to reach out to each other. COR consists of informal “dates’’ such as getting coffee, zoom calls, phone calls, and other ways for chapter members to meet potential new members. The Panhellenic Association also will put on tabling events called “Meet the Chapters’ ‘, where potential new members can come and meet chapters at a structured event and go from there! Not every chapter participates in COR. Chapters must be below campus total to be eligible to participate which means until after Bid Day, it is uncertain which chapters will participate.

Health & Safety The KU Panhellenic Association is dedicated to prioritizing member safety. The Director of Health and Safety works towards this goal by providing educational resources, guest speakers for our community, and making all reporting forms available to members. The Health and Safety of Potential New Members is also of the utmost importance to the Panhellenic Association. We have worked hard to provide Rho Gammas with resources related to mental health, communication skills, and gender based violence. The Director of Health and Safety oversees the CARE Sisters program, an organization of sorority members dedicated to ridding our campus of rape culture and be a resource to anyone effected by gender based violence. CARE Sisters go through an intensive training process and their three pillars are to BELIEVE, VALIDATE, and CONNECT TO RESOURCES. Commitment to Equity, Inclusion, DIversity, & Access During this term, the Panhellenic council has strived to stress the importance of education regarding equity, inclusion, diversity, and access-related conversations. In doing so, the EIDA committee meets bi-weekly to discuss and write about how to grow as a Panhellenic community. - Pack an easy snack and extra water bottle - Bring a change of comfortable shoes (flip flops, sandals, sneakers) for walking between chapter houses and standing on busses - Take good notes - Take the time to get to know your Rho Gammas and other members of your recruitment group, they might be your future sisters! - Prepare questions to ask recruiters, get to know them too! - Wear what makes you feel confident and most like yourself - Do your research! Follow all 11 chapter’s Instagrams, familiarize yourself with their values and philanthropy.

Tips & Tricks Hydrate Remember that this is summer, and

that you will be outside for most of the day when you are not in rounds. Staying hydrated is so important this week! Feel free to bring along a water bottle , and just leave it outside when you physically go into a chapter facility. Along with this, any time you have the chance to use the bathroom, do that too!

Seating Options - Use this week as an opportunity to get to know fellow PNMs! I know so many people who have made some of their best friends during break rounds, regardless of what chapters they ended up in on Bid Day. - Drink more water than you think you need to because you do NOT want to be dehydrated during this week, especially since it tends to be over 90 degrees some days.

There will be breaks during the day where you can sit in the shade. The grass can be wet so you might want to bring a towel, blanket, or yoga mat to sit on! There will also an indoor rest stop.

Take Notes

The days are long, and sometimes start to blend together. To avoid forgetting what you talked about at certain chapters, take notes each round! Write down your conversation, what you liked (or didn’t) about the chapter, and if you could see yourself fitting in there! PRO TIP: if you can remember an active member’s name after you leave, that’s a good sign of conversation.

Do Your Own Thing

It is very easy to let others’ choices influence your own this week. If you have friends going through recruitment, let them do their own thing and you, yours. Remember that your recruitment is different from everyone else’s. It can also be easy to have outside influences shape your decision, including family members who were once a part of Sorority and Fraternity Life. Make your own choices, and see what chapters you think you would fit in at best!

Ask Questions

The Recruitment team, Panhellenic Executive Board, and Recruitment Counselors are here to help you. If you have any questions, never be afraid to ask. Also, we encourage you to ask chapter members questions. You are wanting to know just as much as they are wanting to know about you. Ask about daily life situations! What do meals look like? How is the parking situation? How does picking rooms in the actual house work? Are there any study hour requirements? Asking questions is a vital aspect of the recruitment process and finding the place is most tailored to your interests.

Trust Yourself

You’re going to have to make some tough decisions throughout the week. Our biggest advice to you is that you should trust your gut when making these decisions. Everything happens for a reason, and you will end up in a place that you were meant to be at the end of the week. If you’re in a position to make a tough decision, always go back to your core values. Remember this is a time where being “selfish” is encouraged. Make this decision by thinking of yourself. You are an intelligent person, trust yourself!

Bring a Bag

Bring any kind of bag you can fit your belongings you want to bring in. These bags will stay outside chapter facilities. Bring something you are comfortable with being on the ground. Here are some items the recruitment team found helpful: deodorant, hair ties, insulated water bottle, granola bars, mints, a book, deck of cards, fans, portable charger, pens, oil blotting sheets, comfortable shoes to wear between rounds, touch up makeup and hairspray, hair brush. None of these items are required!

LDST 301 It’s On Us: Gender Based Violence Prevention is a course that examines the foundational concepts of Gender Based Violence Prevention at the individual level. The office of Panhellenic Association requires new members to enroll in this course. LDST 301 can be taken for credit or for no credit. This course does contain sensitive content, and students can be exempt from taking the course at any time, no questions asked.
