LETTER FROM THE
PRESIDENT
DEAR POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER,
I became a part of this community at the beginning of my Freshman year, and I can honestly say that my time at KU is inherently better because I pushed myself out of my comfort zone (okay, maybe my mom helped to nudge me a little bit…) and participated in the 2019 Fall Formal Recruitment. I spent my whole K-12 life in a small town in south-central Kansas. Leading up to my Freshman year, the idea of leaving a place where I knew everyone and moving to a university where I knew approximately eight people was, frankly, terrifying. I wanted to be involved in some way at KU, but more than anything I just wanted to find people who I connected with; after my first day of recruitment, I knew I was where I was supposed to be. As a result of becoming a member of PHA and the relationships that followed, I have had the opportunity to serve as the Junior Panhellenic Association President, hold a leadership role in my chapter, be a senator and now executive board member for Student Senate, and reside in my current role as President of the Panhellenic Association. Panhellenic relies upon four foundational pillars: Leadership, Scholarship, Friendship, and Service. Every single chapter at KU offers an abundance of opportunities in each of these virtues and enables its members to achieve excellence in every area of their lives. From social events to philanthropic opportunities to leadership positions, the PHA community undoubtedly has something for you. Yes, sorority life is an amazing way to acclimate to campus life, but more than that, Panhellenic immerses you in a community of young women who are as exceptional and passionate as you are. We are truly excited about your interest in joining the Panhellenic Association! If you have any general or specific questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any other member of the PHA Executive Board (look under the About tab under Officers). I hope you have an amazing summer; I look forward to seeing you on the hill this Fall! Rock Chalk,
SADIE WILLIAMS
PAGE 4
SO WHAT IS
PANHELLENIC? The Panhellenic Association (PHA) was founded at the University of Kansas in the spring of 1905 with the purpose of increasing the influence of sororities in college life, improving the relationships between the members of different chapters, and ensuring dignified methods of recruiting, pledging, and initiation. Today, our campus has 11 recognized chapters that strive for excellence in the four founding pillars of Leadership, Scholarship, Friendship, and Service. Students looking for sisterhood that continues beyond the college experience can explore joining one of the 11 recognized chapters on KU’s campus. PHA is advised and governed by the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), which was founded in 1902 and is the umbrella organization for all 26 major (inter)national sororities. Every member who joins a chapter is considered a member of the Panhellenic Association. The founding of PHA sparked a campus-wide increase in university involvement. Two years after PHA was founded, the fraternity men of the University of Kansas followed suit and founded their own Panhellenic Association in 1907, which was later renamed the Interfraternity Council (IFC). The Panhellenic organizations also inspired non-Greek affiliated students to form their own self-governing organizations. The University of Kansas Panhellenic Association is an inclusive community which encourages diversity and inclusion of women from all types of backgrounds and beliefs. As a new member, you will experience many new things while getting acclimated with your sorority and the university. Each chapter has a different program specifically designed for new members to help transition them into sorority and college life. New members will learn about the history and traditions of their chapters, as well as, skills that will make for an easy transition into college life.

LETTER FROM THE
RECRUITMENT TEAM DEAR POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER, We want to start by saying how excited we are for all of you. This is such an exciting time in so many of your lives and choosing to go through the fall formal recruitment (FFR) is a big decision. This sorority and fraternity life community has impacted the women we are in so many ways. We have had an endless amount of opportunities for leadership, scholarship, service, and sisterhood. We have made so many lifelong friendships with women from multiple chapters on campus. We will always be tremendously thankful for the Panhellenic Association here at KU. Our advice to all of you is take a deep breath and take it all in. This process is all about YOU. Try to be the most authentic version of yourself. This is a time to be selfish and make decisions solely for yourself. Do not worry about what your friends, roommates, or anyone else is doing. Focus on you, and take care of yourself! Let your recruitment counselors be your way to vent and talk about any feelings you have. This process is long, but it is so rewarding to be a part of this community. Rock chalk,
DARBI, JENNA, & KATIE
PAGE 6
SO WHAT IS A
RECRUITMENT COUNSELOR? Every single PNM will have recruitment counselors. These women are disaffiliated from their respective chapters in order to best represent the Panhellenic community as a whole. You can depend on them to give you unbiased and supportive advice throughout the week. They are obligated to keep all your questions and concerns confidential and will remain neutral to all chapters throughout all of Formal Recruitment. These women have gone through a rigorous interview and training process to be fully prepared to help you all to the best of their ability. They will be able to answer many of your questions about Recruitment and life as a Panhellenic woman, and even being a KU student. Their purpose is to guide you through Recruitment as a confidant and help you through any problems you may have or hard decisions you may face. Once you are officially signed up for FFR21 a recruitment counselor will reach out to you and answer any questions you might have! Then they will be there to greet you when you move into the residence halls or move back to Lawrence and will become your guide through the excitement and hustle of recruitment. You will have mandatory nightly and morning meetings with them throughout the week, where important Recruitment information will be discussed. Don’t think of them as only a guide; they are here to be a friend, too. College can be tough and confusing. Recruitment is only one week, but they will be there to support you far beyond that. These women are here to be an automatic, trustworthy friend and supporter. Yes, they have gone through Recruitment themselves and can be a source of great knowledge about all things sorority life, but they are also great women to have as your friend. They are here for you, even to be your own personal fan holder… as seen below.

THE FOUR
PILLARS SISTERHOOD In each chapter, efforts are made to bond new members with the rest of the sorority. Chapters will host multiple sisterhood events throughout the year and encourage women to become involved with the chapter. Fraternity and Sorority Life also works to create opportunities for members to interact with members of other chapters and councils.
SCHOLARSHIP For the past 39 years, the all SFL GPA has exceeded the average University GPA. There are resources made available such as Greek Tutors and mentorship programs. All chapters have GPA requirements that members must uphold. There are also thousands of dollars worth of leadership, merit and need based scholarships awarded annually through individual chapters and the SFL community.
LEADERSHIP There are a variety of leadership positions available throughout the SFL community. Every chapter has its own executive board. This is the governing board of women who plan and oversee chapter operations. Many SFL members also hold leadership positions in a variety of organizations across campus.
PURPOSE Each sorority member is required to complete at least ten service hours per semester. There are a variety of different ways women achieve this, and resources are made readily available to chapter’s members. For example, women have volunteered for food banks, homeless shelters, elementary schools and animal shelters.

LEARNING SORORITY AND FRATERNITY LIFE
LINGO
Active Member: A sorority member currently in college who has been initiated by her chapter.
Potential New Member (PNM): Any woman who is eligible to participate in Formal or Informal Recruitment.
Alumna: An initiated sorority member who is no longer active in a collegiate chapter.
Preferencing: This is the process of “ranking” the chapters you attend. You will “preference” the chapters you wish to return to and then preference the ones you wish to not re-attend. Remember this is a mutual selection process. This means there is a chance you will not be invited back to the chapters you prefer, and there is a chance you do get invited back to chapters you prefer to not re-attend.
Bid: A formal invitation to join a sorority or fraternity. Continous Open Recruitment (COR): The period throughout the year where chapters can recruit new members in a more informal Recruitment process. MRABA (Membership Recruitment Accepting Binding Agreement): A document each Potential New Member fills out and signs immediately following Preference Day stating her membering preferences. The Potential New Member ranks the sororities she would accept a bid from in the order of her preference. This a binding agreement, stating that the PNM is willing to accept a bid from any sorority she lists.
Quota: The number or women a sorority may pledge during Formal or Informal Recruitment. Letter of Recommendation: A written letter or statement from an alumna introducing and recommending a Potential New Member for their respective chapter. Snap Bid : A procedure used at the close of bid matching to help chapters reach quota prior to bid distribution.
Single Intentional Preference: When a PNM attends more than one event on Preference day but limits her membership selections by not listing all of her options on her MRABA.
Informal Recruitment: A formalized period of Continuous Open Recruitment, beginning with a Kickoff Event to meet chapters. Chapters will host events promoted by Panhellenic board.
Legacy: A PNM whose mother, grandmother or sister is an alumna of, or active member in, a particular sorority.
SFL: Sorority and Fraternity Life
Philanthropy: A national and/ or local charity that a sorority sponsors, donating time and money through service to promote human welfare
Rho Chi: a nickname for Recruitment Counselor
PAGE 11
SCHEDULE ORIENTATION All Potential New Members will check in and move into their Residence Halls. If you are living off campus, you will still check in to find out whether or not they are in the blue group or the red group. Your Recruitment Counselors should be walking around, ready and excited to introduce themselves to you. That afternoon, all PNMs will attend Orientation and there will be an optional Orientation for parents at the same time. That evening, all PNMS will with with their Recruitment group and Recruitment Counselors and attend informal sessions about the week.
OPEN HOUSE
This event is spread across two days, PNMs will only be attending rounds on ONE of the days and then have an OFF day. PNMs will be split into two groups: Red and Blue. They will meet all 11 chapters in this round. This round is a meet and greet, with short 20 minute virtual conversations over the Zoom platform. This day consists of a lot of “small talk”, one tip when prefrencing is to think of the conversations that you felt were deeper!
PHILANTHROPY The max chapters a PNM can attend is 8. These conversations are based around values, service, and the chapter’s philanthropy. Make sure to ask any questions you have this day about requirements of service and study hours at all the chapters!
SISTERHOOD All PNMs will attend their chapters on this day. PNMs have the chance to attend up to 5 different chapters. These conversations will center around friendship, and a day in the life of being an “alpha alpha alpha”. Ask questions about social events, sisterhood events, or anything that you need to know before preferencing. This is also the day the chapters will give a financial presentation on their member dues. Going from 5 chapters to 2 is a big difference, this is a big decision! Be intentional and authentic.
PREFERENCE On this day, you will visit a maximum of two chapters. Preference day is all about finding where you feel the best connection. Each chapter will hold ceremonies unique to their values and traditions. This is a very sentimental time for many chapter members, and you will hopefully get a sense of the connection and sisterhood in each chapter. This day will bring a close to your Recruitment week and will bring you closer to where you belong. Be yourself and ask any last questions you might have.
BID DAY
Rounds are over, you have finished preferencing, and now it is finally time to find out which chapter is yours to call home! All PNMs will arrive at the specified area with your Recruitment groups and receive a sealed envelope. There will be a designed time to open the envelopes and also find out which chapters your Recruitment Counselors belong to. After opening your envelope, you will gather around your new chapter’s designated area and go to the chapter’s bid day festivities. This is a fun day to get to know your sisters and make friends before the start of the semester!
PAGE 12
TIPS & TRICKS Hydrate Remember that it is summer, and that you will be outside for a lot of the day when you are not in rounds. Drinking a lot of water is so important this week! Feel free to bring along your water bottle if we are in person, just leave it outside when you physically go into a chapter facility! Any time you have the chance to hydrate, DO IT! Along with this, any time you have the chance to use the bathroom, do that too! Bring something to sit on. If we are in person there will be breaks in the day where you can sit in the shade. The grass can be wet so you might want to bring a towel, blanket, or a yoga mat to sit on! Bring a bag. Bring any kind of bag you can fit your belongings you want to bring in. These bags will stay outside the chapter facilities. So bring something you are comfortable with being on the ground. Here are some items the recruitment team has found helpful: deodorant, hair ties, (insulated) water bottle, granola bars, mints, an interesting book, deck of cards, fans, portable charge, a pen, oil blotting sheets, comfortable shoes to wear between rounds, touch up makeup and hairspray, hair brush. None of these items are required! Take Notes The days are long, and sometimes start to blend together. To avoid forgetting what you talked about at certain chapters, take notes each round! Write down your conversation, what you liked (or didn’t) about the chapter, and if you could see yourself fitting in there! PRO TIP: If you can remember a woman’s name after you leave, that’s a sign of a good conversation!
Ask Questions The Recruitment team, Panhellenic Executive Board, and Recruitment Counselors are here to help you. If you have any questions, never be afraid to ask. Also, we encourage you to ask chapter women questions. You are wanting to know just as much as they are wanting to know about you. Ask about daily life situations! What do meals look like? How is the parking situation? How does picking rooms in the actual house work? Are there any study hour requirements? Asking questions is a vital aspect of the Recruitment process and finding the place that is most tailored to your interests. Do your own thing It is very easy to let others’ choices influence your own this week. If you have friends going through Recruitment, let them do their own thing and you, yours. Remember that your recruitment is different from everyone else’s. It can also be easy to have outside influences shape your decisions. Do not let anyone put pressure on you to make a decision, including family members who were once a part of greek life! Make your own choices, and see what chapters you think you would fit in at best. Trust yourself You’re going to have to make some tough decisions throughout the week. Our biggest advice to you is that you trust your gut when making these decisions. Everything happens for a reason, and you will end up in the place that you were meant to be by the end of the week. If you’re in a position to make a tough decision, always go back to your core values. Remember this is a time where being “selfish” is encouraged. Make this decision by thinking of yourself. All of you are intelligent women, trust yourself!
PAGE 13
WHAT TO
WEAR
OPEN HOUSE & PHILANTHROPY For open house, you will be provided a T-shirt! This is paid for in your recruitment registration fee. Pair this shirt with whatever you are comfortable with. This round will be virtual, so if that means comfy sweats, go for it! For philanthropy, you will again be provided a t-shirt. If rounds are on zoom then again feel free to wear whatever is most comfortable with the shirt. If we are in person, pair with a skirt, pants, jeans, or whatever you feel your best in! Wear comfortable shoes!
PAGE 14
SISTERHOOD The theme is “KU Gameday”! Wear an outfit that you would wear to a Jayhawk football game. We added a full page of inspiration for you. Many women choose to dress more casual for game days with a KU t-shirt and jeans and some like to wear dresses! There is always so much variety on game days with outfits. This is a chance to show your style and be yourself. Remember if we are in person you will be going on house tours, so wear shoes you feel comfortable walking in.
PAGE 15
PREFERENCE Think of preference as a summer wedding or special occasion event. This round is the most formal, most people wear a dress, jumpsuit, romper, pants suit, or a blouse paired with pants or a skirt! We have included some pictures of women in our community dressed up similarly!
PAGE 16
LEGACY
POLICY A legacy is a PNM whose mother, grandmother or sister is an alumna of, or active member in, a particular sorority. Historically organizations have given some sort of preferential treatment to these women during the recruitment process. This year, some organizations have decided to move away from that preferential treatment. Below is a list of all chapters and their current decision on legacy policies. Please refer to each individual organization for more information on their exact policies and rationale.

LETTERS OF
RECOMMENDATION Recommendations are letters or statements from a sorority alumna recommending a Potential New Member for membership. Letters of Recommendation are not required to participate in Fall Formal Recruitment, however, some chapters do find it helpful in getting to know a woman. The alumna member will provide a brief description of the prospective member and explain why that woman would be an asset to the specific chapter. It is also important to note that a recommendation does not guarantee a Potential New Member an invitation to events during recruitment week, nor does it guarantee membership in that sorority. The University of Kansas has 11 nationally-recognized NPC-affiliated sororities that will participate in 2021 Fall Formal Recruitment. The recommendation process varies among the sororities, but alumnae will be familiar with their own sorority’s requirements. While it is common to send multiple recommendations to one sorority from separate alumnae, it is unnecessary to exceed more than two. Although there is no official deadline for when letters of recommendation must be received, all alumnae are encouraged to mail them directly to the addresses below no later than July 31, 2021 to ensure that they are received prior to the start of recruitment. As an additional note, please do NOT submit your letters when you register for recruitment on Campus Director. These letters will not be sent to the chapter and will not be used during your recruitment process unless sent to the specific address or online form given.

CONTINUOUS
OPEN
RECRUITMENT
Continuous Open Recruitment, also known as COR, is an informal recruitment that will begin immediately after Bid Day of Fall Formal Recruitment. Continuous Open Recruitment will end on stop day of the fall semester and remain on the first day of the spring semester. Any woman is eligible for COR if they are a current full time student at the University of Kansas, have not signed an MRABA since the last formal recruitment, and consistently identify as a woman. If Fall Formal Recruitment does not work out, COR is another great option. This is a more informal process compared to Fall Formal Recruitment. During COR, both chapters and potential new women have the opportunity to reach out to each other. COR consists of informal “dates’’ such as getting coffee, zoom calls, phone calls, and other ways for chapter members to meet potential new women. The Panhellenic Association also will put on tabling events called “Meet The Chapters”, where potential new members can come and meet chapters at a structured event and go from there! Not every chapter participates in COR. Chapters must be below campus total to be eligible to participate which means until after Bid Day, it is uncertain which chapters will participate.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF
DIVERSITY & INCLUSION DEAR POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER, Welcome to Fall Formal Recruitment 2021! I’m Anne Gill and I am the Panhellenic Director of Diversity and Inclusion. I am so excited to meet you all and watch you find your new home in Panhellenic (PHA)! In our community, we strive towards creating a values-based recruitment and an inclusive and equitable process for all. We are committed to cultivating an environment where genuine connections, meaningful relationships, and discovery of shared principles can thrive and we do this through an emphasis in service, scholarship, leadership, and sisterhood. In the upcoming weeks, I challenge you to think about your core values, what qualities you are looking for in a lifelong sisterhood, and what inspires you to be the best possible version of yourself. It is important to remember that PHA is not perfect, and relies on authenticity to ensure a safe space for everyone. While we actively work towards breaking racial, economic, and other systemic barriers through diversity, equity, and inclusion education, we acknowledge there remains work to be done. Understanding that PHA has historically embraced those of privilege, we hope you join us as we dismantle old norms and and create a better, more welcoming, and more empowering community for all. I look forward to welcoming you on this journey and should you have questions that I may help answer, please reach out. I hope you will find this experience is as rewarding and as exciting as I did! Rock Chalk,
ANNE GILL
