Dominic Calabro President & CEO Florida TaxWatch,

Inc.

Dominic M. Calabro: A name synonymous with fiscal responsibility and public service.

As the President and Chief Execu ve Officer of Florida TaxWatch, Dominic leads a statewide, non-profit, nonpar san organiza on dedicated to enhancing government efficiency, advoca ng for taxpayers, and fostering informed ci zen engagement.

Founded in 1979, Florida TaxWatch strives to empower Floridians by promo ng sound fiscal policies and responsible governance. Their mission? To improve government produc vity, enhance taxpayer value, and deepen ci zen understanding. Through rigorous research, they shed light on the impact of tax and spending decisions, ensuring that Floridians’ livelihoods and quality of life remain at the forefront.

Calabro, an “almost na ve” Floridian, embarked on his journey from New York to South Florida at the tender age of eleven. His educa onal path was equally remarkable: Catholic school, followed by four years at Catholic Seminary, and then high honors at Broward Community College. He later earned his bachelor’s degree with dis nc on from Florida Interna onal University. But the pursuit of knowledge didn’t stop there—Calabro holds a master’s degree in Social Work from Florida State University, and he’s on the cusp of receiving a second master’s degree in public finance and budge ng.

Before joining TaxWatch in June of 1980, Calabro honed his analy cal skills as part of the Florida Senate Ways and Means Commi ee. Under his leadership, Florida TaxWatch has garnered the respect of influen al leaders across the state. Their work has not only caught the a en on of Floridians but also earned accolades from na onal media outlets. In fact, the na onal Junior Chamber of Commerce recognized Calabro as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Americans in 1994, joining such icons as Elvis Presley, President Gerald Ford and President Bill Clinton.

Beyond the boardroom, Dominic Calabro resides in Tallahassee with his wife, Debbie, and their four children. His commitment to public service and fiscal stewardship con nues to shape Florida’s future, one informed decision at a me.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

Origin and Use

The academic costume worn today originated during the 12th and 13th centuries, when gowns and hoods kept scholars and clerics warm. The dis nc ve gown served to set the student apart from other ci zens. Un l a er the Civil War, students at most American universi es wore caps and gowns daily. They varied in design un l they were standardized by the American Intercollegiate Commission in 1894. At that me it was decided that all robes would be black - bachelors' gowns to be made of worsted stuff with pointed sleeves, masters' gowns of silk with long, closed sleeves, doctors' gowns of silk with longer sleeves and faced with black velvet from hem to neck and back. They also carried three velvet bands around each sleeve about the elbow. Hoods were made of the same material as the gowns, the length varying with the degree. The lining of the hood iden fies the highest degree-gran ng university by its color. Keiser University’s colors are blue and white.
