VESTFOSSEN KUNSTLABORATORIUM, 2021

TO YOU (KUNSTGAVEN 2018 – 2020) In the exhibition To You, works by 14 contemporary artists, all either from or based in Norway, fill the four floors of the Main Building at Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium. The exhibition presents great breadth in forms of expression, themes and materials – from ceramic sculptures and paintings to drone films and interactive site-specific installations.

Many of the artists represent a young, exploratory and experimental contemporary Norwegian art scene such as it appears today. The more established artists were, or still are, pioneering within a certain medium or in their own generation. What all the artists share in common is that they are socially involved; their works often contain political undertones and address current critical issues. As part of this year’s programme for the public, we show video interviews that give you the opportunity to become better acquainted with the individual artistic practices.

The exhibition presents both recently made works and recently purchased works that are the result of collaboration between VKL and various artists (or their representing galleries) during the period 2018–2020. This is thanks to Kunstgaven – a grant given to VKL by the philanthropic foundation Sparebankstiftelsen DNB, which we at VKL want to pass on to our public through this year’s main exhibition, its mediation and the administration of this art.

A significant part of the Kunstgaven project, besides purchasing works, is to collaborate with producing artists by having them use our guest studio in Vestfossen. The participating artists have been invited to come to Vestfossen and to use the guest studio while working on new productions and in connection with the exhibition, thus for a time becoming part of the local art scene. In this way, Kunstgaven has enabled us to work more closely and extensively than ever before with producing artists in advance of this year’s main exhibition. The art on show has been acquired and produced ‘for you’ as visitors to Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium, with the gift we have received from Sparebankstiftelsen DNB. We hope it is a gift rich in content, and we will do our utmost to administer it and make it available for you to engage with and enjoy.

TIL DEG (KUNSTGAVEN 2018 – 2020) I utstillingen Til deg er det fjorten samtidskunstnere, fra eller basert i Norge, som fyller de fire etasjene av Vestfossen Kunstlaboratoriums hovedbygning. Utstillingen viser et stort spenn i uttrykksformer, tematikk og materialbruk – fra keramikkskulptur og maleri til dronefilm og interaktive stedsspesifikke installasjoner. Mange av kunstnerne representerer en ung, utforskende og eksperimentell norsk samtidskunstscene slik den fortoner seg i dag.

De mer etablerte kunstnerskapene kjennetegnes av at de var, eller fortsatt er, banebrytende innenfor et medium eller i sin samtid. Felles for alle er et samfunnsengasjement, ofte med politiske undertoner, preget av vår tids problemstillinger. Som en del av årets formidlingsprogram viser vi videointervjuer som gir publikum mulighet til å bli bedre kjent med de enkelte kunstnerskapene.

Utstillingen viser både nyproduserte og innkjøpte verk som er resultatet av samarbeid Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium har hatt med ulike kunstnere i perioden 2018-2020. Dette er en del av Kunstgaven – en pengegave tildelt VKL av Sparebankstiftelsen DNB, som vi ønsker å gi videre til vårt publikum gjennom årets sesongutstilling, og videre forvaltning og formidling av denne kunsten. En viktig del av prosjektet, utover innkjøp av kunstverk, er samarbeid med aktive kunstnere gjennom opphold på vårt gjesteatelier i Vestfossen. De deltakende kunstnerne har blitt invitert til å komme til Vestfossen og bruke gjesteatelieret i arbeidet med nyproduksjon og i forbindelse med utstillingen, og for en periode være en del av det lokale kunstmiljøet. Slik har Kunstgaven vært en spesiell sjanse til å samarbeide tettere og mer omfattende med produserende kunstnere i arbeidet med årets hovedutstilling, enn hva som tidligere har vært mulig. Kunsten som vises er kjøpt inn og produsert «til deg» som besøker av Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium, med gaven vi har fått av Sparebankstiftelsen DNB. Vi håper det er en innholdsrik gave som vi skal gjøre vårt ytterste for å forvalte og formidle videre.
