HO W IT ALL STARTED...

Family

Once upon a time there was a bookstore in a street named Bredgade in the city of Copenhagen. KunstIndustriens story started in the 1940’s in this distinguished bookstore in Bredgade 67. The store specialised in Catholic literature, and was a supplier to the catholic church, Sankt Ansgar.

In 1947 Sven Erik Damsholt was hired and the bookstore became known as Sankt Ansgar Bookstore, and not only as a supplier for catholic literature. Soon it was not only supplying religious books, but also fine quality handmade candles.

Lack of profit in producing books gave Sven Erik Damsholt an idea, and when he became sole owner of the bookstore, he started his own home production of the hand-dipped wax altar candles for the church. In the beginning the production was done in the back of the store, and it took 8 days to produce 20 candles.

He called his candle company KunstIndustrien after the former museum Kunst­ Industriens Hus, which was placed right across the street. Later KunstIndustrien was passed on to his son-in-law, Ib Diamant, who ran and expanded the company for the next 30 years. Today, KunstIndustrien produces more than 60,000 wax altar candles a year and is owned by the entrepreneurial couple Steen and Britta Frost.

KunstIndustrien presents a wide collection of quality candles each with its own special story. It all still stays very much, within in the family.

Quality

Exquisite quality, the best raw materials and craftsmanship are the essence of Kunst­ Industrien. Our collection presents a unique variety of quality candles; our own classic wax altar candles, the slim Italian church candles, the Giants and the eco-labelled candles, the coloured candles and the Christmas candles – all of which are unique in their own special way.

Our own wax altar candles are made of RSPO stearin, and they are truly handmade.

The only machinery we use is an electric melting pot and an old Grundfos pump.

Everything else is done manually by a very experienced team of candle makers – from preparing the molds to wrapping the candles.

The wick that is carefully adapted to the diameter of the candle means that each candle rarely runs. Our wax altar candles

burn stable, beautiful and longer than most candles –some up to 800 hours.

In December 2016 we tested our wax alter candle for soot at an approved laboratory. The result should be between 0 and 1, where 0 is best. Our candles scored as low as 0.04, and is thus among the very best in the market.

THE IMPORTANCE OF

Sustainability

Our goals and ambitions towards sustainability is a challenge that involves production, transport, lifestyle and changing consumer habits and attitudes. The opportunities for living sustainable require changes. Now! We must promote a more sustainable development for both our people and our planet, and at KunstIndustrien we consider the needs of present and future generations, being very aware that our entire business must be conducted in a way that is socially and environmentally sustainable. Therefore we have set up well defined ambitions and goals. Our vision and strategy are built on several key ambitions: Global Goals We support the UN’s world goals for sustainable development and do so with a measurable result. Primarily focusing on goals 8, 12 and 13 (see below).

Packaging Materials We are packing a huge number of boxes for shipping which requires miles of plastic tape.

KunstIndustrien is replacing the traditional package tape with re-cycled paper tape.

We are already using recycled paper boxes for all our Danish shipments and are also replacing

the white plastic foam packing filling with a natural packaging material made of corn starch.

Recycled stearin – Zero Waste Project We have initiated a recycling concept with several of our restaurant customers where we collect the left-over wax altar candle stubs. We can use these stubs when we are producing our outdoor torches therefore eliminating all waste. We call it “the Zero Waste project”.

Sustainable stearin We only use RSPO stearin for our wax altar candles. Currently we are working towards a closer relationship with the manufacturer of our plant-based stearin. We want to support fair trade and improve the living and economic growth of the local workers.

Our efforts are focused on creating a more sustainable business. We are using the best, cleanest and most stable plant-based stearin and paraffins available in the market to make our wax altar candles. This means that the candles, in addition to a slow combustion, also burn very clean and stable, and without any odours.

Our candles are produced with respect for the environment and with a focus on sustainability.

Wax altar candles

It all began with our wax altar candle made to the catholic church in Bredgade back in the 1940’s. 70 years later the handmade candles still remain our signature product and KunstIndustrien has constantly improved the quality. Today, the wax altar candles are made with RSPO stearin, and are still truly handmade. The only machinery we use is an electric melting pot and an old Grundfos pump. Everything else is done manually by a very experienced team of candle makers – from preparing the molds to wrapping the candles. The special mix of high-grade waxes make our candles translucent and give them a beautiful glow when burning. The candles are tested and approved according to EN15493 for fire safety and EN16426 for

soot behavior. Our wax altar candles burn stable, beautiful and longer – up to 800 hours. Choose between 31 variations, and light our candle with certified conscience.

Nice to know...

RSPO stearin comes from certified plantations. We work constantly for a cleaner world, and to help preserve the rainforest and reduce the CO2 emissions. Our wax altar candles are also EN-tested for soot behavior and score very close to 0. In any way we can, KunstIndustrien will support sustainability.

We are known for producing candles to an exceptionally good quality. The candles are hand-molded individually using our 70 year old recipe and method. We are daily testing and observing that the flame will burn clearly and steadily in a quiet teardrop shape and to the edge as it should.

Therefore, our candles very rarely run, saving you time and money on cleaning tables and washing tablecloths. The raw material is of such high quality that the candles do not ooze or smell. Unique candles EXTRAORDINARY LIGHT STANDS OUT. We have found some neat candles from Italy and Germany made of the best raw materials that burn nicely and with a beautiful glow. NO DRIP

Canal candles This unique candle will not drip even under extreme conditions. Historically, the canal candle was used in churches as it will withstand the wind turbulence often present in the big indoor spaces of churches. The vertical channels inside the candle will simply collect any excess stearin. Today this brilliant candle has also found its place in hotels and restaurants – and of course in exposed places in private homes. The candle carries the Nordic Swan eco-label.

THE ORIGINAL

Prayer candles YOU CAN RECOGNISE IT ON ITS COLOUR

This popular little candle is the original. You will recognise it by the colour and the surface, and the fact that it’s only 10 cm of size. A small candle with a long story. The candle goes back in history more than 100 years and it has always been made from two kinds of paraffin – soft on the inside and hard on the outside. This ensures a perfect burn.

OUTSTANDING OUTDOOR CANDLES & TRIPODS Our outdoor candles burn for hours and hours to make the summer last longer and to light up the winter. The outdoor candles are available in 6 sizes, and the tripod in black or galvanized metal, in 4 sizes. With our range of outdoor products, you get several combination options to light up front steps, terraces or garden paths. They may simply be placed anywhere – except inside.

TIP: When turning off the candle make sure to dip the wick into the soft candle mass - it makes it so much easier to light up again next time.

CERTIFIED CHRISTMAS CANDLES COUNT WEEKS AND DAYS. Calendar and Advent candles are a beautiful Christmas tradition that require a candle that manages the task elegantly with a beautiful glow and pure burning.

KunstIndustrien has used stearin from the 2017 season for our Christmas candles, which we know come from sustainable palm forestry, which bear the certification RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil). Hereafter extraordinary measurements are taken to ensure that the palm oil is extracted under controlled conditions and takes nature into account. The candles are also EN-tested for soot and fire safety. You can without doubt light our X-mas candles with a better and greener conscience.

You can choose from two different kinds; the Italian church candle, and the short coloured candle.

The white Italian church candle burns for no less than 3 hours. The secret to the beautiful and long burning is the use of a very thin wick that uses less fuel and the good raw materials. The light is made of pure, highly refined paraffin and stearin, with a small amount of carnauba wax, a micro-wax from palm oil which is also used in a wide variety of make-up products.

Cultivating flowers in greenhouses and the use of pesticides sends CO2 consumption up in the atmosphere burdening the environment. Christmas

SCANDINAVIAN COOL Different pinecones, thistles, moss and pine tree branches. Nature’s own raw materials make a simple and beautiful decoration for our new fluted pillar calendar candle with its pattern in shiny silver. Mix and match your favourite materials from the nature, to create your own personal Christmas decoration.

ICE LANTERN Our Wax Altar Candles gives your ice lantern a warm glow. It is easy to make an ice lantern and it will last all winter. Here we use leaves, amaryllis, eucalyptus, thistles and grape hyacinths. Use one larger and one smaller bucket in the middle. Put stones or something else heavy in the small bucket to keep it in place when you add water. Place leaves and flowers decoratively between the buckets.

Place the buckets in the freezer overnight.

Next day your ice lantern is ready for use. Enjoy all winter.

These candles have been made in Denmark since 1975 by a family on the west coast of Jutland who strive for uncompromising quality. The colours are solid, which makes them more aesthetic and different from the majority of coloured candles on the market.
