Archaeological expectations: high

Transformation: an exceptional expression of conservation that is situated at the cutting edge of urban development, heritage and architecture. Government architect Floris Alkemade believes that with the majority of the Netherlands being built-up, planned or otherwise in use, the focus is now shifting from a compulsion for the new to a re-evaluation of what is already there; to a specific building culture whose primary drive is to combine old and new functions rather than exclusively old and new materials.2 This relocation to an existing premises means its users will never be engaging with an ‘empty place’. Rather, they will enter into a dynamic between their own identity and the building’s history. This is no clean slate, no tabula rasa; this is a tabula scripta.

It is generally expected of public institutions in particular that they will take a neutral position – one that is not ‘charged’. Nevertheless, many arts education institutions in Amsterdam are housed in buildings whose functions have transformed with time: the Rijkspostspaarbank’s premises became the Conservatorium (it is now a hotel); the Rietveld Academy was built on the playing fields of a former football club; and now the Amsterdam University of the Arts is also investing in re-purposing.

Stepping across the IJ In January 2016 part of the Academy of Theatre and Dance moved to a new location: the former Shell laboratory complex on the north bank of Amsterdam’s IJ waterway. The Amsterdam University of the Arts had bought the building three years earlier and then carried out substantial alterations to create the home base for the Breitner Academy and DAS Graduate School, formed by the two masters’ programmes and the Performing Arts in Transition research group.

what’s already there’ applies to much more than the architectural design work alone. It constitutes a more deeply meaningful exercise; an invitation to resettle an organisation for performing arts in a remarkable context, and to attentively trace the legacy of the shift we are undergoing; where are we now, what did we see along the way, and what has changed? That process is the subject of this publication, and it is the story told by Thomas Lenden’s photographs.

From oil to DAS Graduate School The foundations of the Grootlab, as this historic building is now generally known, were first laid for a modest laboratory built in 1914 for the Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij (an earlier incarnation of Royal Dutch Shell). The city centre had by this time long turned its back on the other side of the water, and rather than being a full-fledged part of Amsterdam, the North borough was a place of large-scale industrial development and of exile for the social underclass. The petrochemical industry expanded and Shell thrived along with it, expanding its business premises in the 1920s and commissioning its in-house architect C.A. Abspoel to design the Groot Laboratorium (Big Laboratory, Grootlab), which was completed in 1929 – further storeys and wings were added later. Expansion of Shell’s research facilities would continue unabated right up to the 1990s, and it was not long before Grootlab marked just the starting point of the growing complex, with its offices, warehouses and labs sprawling deep into the Buiksloterham neighbourhood and to the banks of the Buiksloter Canal.

By 2003, however, Shell’s need for such a large quantity of buildings and land on the north bank had diminished, and an area of twenty square kilometres became available for redevelopment – and for the first time in decades, this land was

publicly accessible for the citizens of Amsterdam.

But in fact for a long period it first remained vacant and before being squatted by the Occupy movement – only in 2013 was a new function found for the Grootlab.3 The Amsterdam University of the Arts bought one of the three original ‘quadrants’ of this redbrick building, an area of approximately five thousand square metres on four storeys. The other former Shell buildings that the city council wanted to keep where the striking Overhoeks Tower (designed by Arthur Staal) and the former Shell canteen now operated by Tolhuistuin cultural centre. This small cluster of monumental structures is almost all that remains of a complex industrial history.

The eye of the camera During the period of renovations which started in May 2015 the Grootlab was all but out of bounds to us, its future users. We had seen the design sketches and blueprints, and been present at discussions, but the transformation itself – the stripping, demolishing and rebuilding – were tasks for the architects, contractors and tradespeople – and for the photographer Thomas Lenden. We asked him to be our eyes and to closely follow the process. Lenden regularly visited the building, a construction site where layer after layer of the laboratory’s history was revealed, opening up new perspectives on altered spaces and functions. He observes: ‘All processes are transformative processes. From this perspective, the photographer’s attempt to find evidence for these transformations - to prove the change - is as limited as his search for the final image.

More interesting are the moments in which the building seems to recover for a while. Then the traces of the past come together with the interventions of the moment, and the accidental results appear as something entirely timeless.’

Dynamics and heartfelt ambitions When at last we staff and students were able to move into the building at the start of 2016, we were keenly aware that we had arrived in a unique place with a rich and highly charged history. To compound matters, this was all taking place in a period of intensive urban development in the area. Grootlab is surrounded by recently completed property development projects that testify to the burgeoning interest for this Overhoeks neighbourhood from culture, tourism and creative industries. But there are still many building sites that are only just getting started, and they herald of an even more industrious future bringing mushrooming high-rises structures. The possibility that local tensions will emerge cannot be discounted. The original working class estates around Van der Pek and Volewijck have a strong local identity and many ‘Northerners’ will be wondering whether the new will truly benefit the old.

Here, in this maelstrom of intense dynamics, DAS Graduate School in Grootlab has set about achieving its heartfelt ambitions. We aspire to offer the very best in performing arts education while expanding and strengthening the master’s and research programmes. And we look forward to doing as part of the community of strong willed, critical and talented people from all over the world.

Dig where you’re standing Theatre director Sjoerd Wagenaar, an alumnus of DAS Theatre master’s programme (formerly DasArts), bases his working method on one simple instruction: ‘Dig where you’re standing.’4 He takes the directive literally, applying it to places and communities. His fundamental assumption is that art, the imagination and archaeology are inextricably bound up. He will doubtless have been pleased to hear the news that research by the Archaeology Bureau indi-

cates an exceptional density of archaeological finds in the Overhoeks area.5 Urban archaeologist Jerzy Gawronski predicts the discovery of ‘material remains associated with development, habitation and land use from the tenth century on.’ In part because from 1409 to 1795 this was the site of a gallows, and the corpses of executed criminals were put on public display here to instruct and intimidate the populace. During the construction of Amsterdam’s North-South Metro line he oversaw the excavation of 700,000 objects – tangible vestiges of North Amsterdam, forgotten remains that give a new perspective on the city, and he writes that, ‘If you don’t know where you’re coming from, you don’t know where you’re going.’6 One characteristic of the construction processes in the Overhoeks area (and likewise the transformation of Grootlab) is that the moments for excavation and discovery are always brief. The speed at which all trace is erased, all holes are filled, and all evidence is discarded, is, to say the least, formidable. It seems that today the present and the past are being driven further apart than ever before. But we – an educational institution whose primary business it is to train and work with artists – are in a position to choose not to be swept along by these accelerating times. Art lets us to look deeper, slow the process, stand still and escape our overly instrumental relations with time and space.

We are curious as to how our students will engage with the building and its location through their own work and context. The second-year DAS Theatre student the Kenyan theatre director and storyteller Ogutu Muraya did just that in a lecture-performance. His fascination for the matter of which stories are told and which are not led him to expose the contrast between the meticulous removal of heavy metals from the North Amsterdam soil and the pollution created

elsewhere in the world by oil companies such as Shell. He believes we should avoid raising divisions between here and there, between then and now; we should embrace life in all its complexity.

Look, remember, pass it on In this context, the connection between archaeology and performing arts is key to building bridges between various periods and events – perhaps even to take responsibility for the destiny we share with other places and other people, and with the history of the Grootlab. The performing arts surely also exist in a permanent state of temporariness, always operating on the verge of vanishing. ‘Performance is over as soon as it happens; therefore it always implies an archaeology.’7 But how should we go about preserving a narrative when there are no artefacts, no objects and no ruins? How do you give shape to one’s relationship with a place, to the search for ‘that which remains’? And how do you go about ensuring that the memory does not stifle the imagination?

Perhaps is all that is required is to be attentive: to look carefully, to remember, and to pass it on.

This can empower artists, like archaeologists, to create a different temporal experience, one that allows the past and the present to coexist in the here and now: ‘We think of archaeology as something to do with digging up the past...

We can better regard it as a practice set in the present, that works on and with the traces of the past.’8

Archeologische verwachting: hoog

Transformatie. Een bijzondere vorm van behoud op het snijvlak van stadsontwikkeling, erfgoed en architectuur. Nu Nederland voor het grootste deel bebouwd, bestemd en in gebruik is, verschuift volgens Rijksbouwmeester Floris Alkemade, de focus van de drang naar het nieuwe naar de herwaardering van het bestaan-de. Naar een specifieke bouwcultuur die niet alleen oude en nieuwe materialen combineert, maar vooral ook oude en nieuwe functies.2 Bij het betrekken van een bestaand pand treffen de nieuwe gebruikers dan ook nooit een ‘lege plek’ aan, maar ontstaat er een dynamiek tussen de eigen identiteit en de geschiedenis van het gebouw.

In plaats van een ‘tabula rasa’, is er sprake van een ‘tabula scripta’, een beschreven lei.

‘Werken met het bestaande’ is voor de nieuwe gebruikers van Grootlab geen architectonische

Van olie tot DAS Graduate School De grondvesten van het Grootlab, zoals het historische gebouw door iedereen wordt genoemd, liggen in een klein laboratorium dat de Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij (de voorganger van de Koninklijke Shell) in 1914 laat bouwen.

Een periode waarin het centrum van de stad de overkant al lang de rug heeft toegekeerd, en Amsterdam-Noord zich in plaats van als volwaardig stadsdeel als sociaal ‘verbanningsoord’ en grootschalig industriegebied ontwikkelt.

Door de groei van de petrochemische industrie breidt Shell haar terrein in de jaren twintig uit en realiseert huisarchitect C.A. Abspoel in 1929 het Groot Laboratorium, waar vervolgens verdere verdiepingen en vleugels aan worden toegevoegd. De groei van faciliteiten voor het onderzoek van Shell kent tot in de negentiger jaren amper beperkingen, het Grootlab markeert al snel alleen nog maar het begin van het complex, dat met zijn kantoren, loodsen en labs tot diep in de Buiksloterham reikt, en tot aan de grens van het Buiksloterkanaal. Als Shell in 2003 niet langer behoefte heeft aan de grote hoeveelheid grond en gebouwen op de noordelijke IJoever, komen twintig hectare beschikbaar voor herontwikkeling. Na vele decennia is het gebied weer openbaar toegankelijk voor de burgers van Amsterdam. Toch zal het nog tot 2013 duren voordat het Grootlab na een lange periode van leegstand en kraak door de Occupy-beweging een nieuwe bestemming krijgt.3

Hoewel juist van publieke instellingen verwacht wordt dat ze niet ‘beladen’ zijn en een neutrale positie innemen, gaan in het Amsterdamse kunstonderwijs al op verschillende plekken de functies van gebouwen in elkaar over: de Rijkspostspaarbank werd het Conservatorium en is nu een hotel, de Rietveld Academie staat op de velden van een oude voetbalclub, en ook de Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten investeert in hergebruik.

Een stap over het IJ In januari 2016 verhuist een deel van de Academie voor Theater en Dans naar een nieuwe locatie: het voormalige laboratorium van oliemaatschappij Shell aan de IJ-oevers in Amsterdam-Noord. De hogeschool heeft het gebouw drie jaar eerder gekocht en grondig laten verbouwen, zodat de Breitner Academie daar kan worden gevestigd en de masteropleidingen en het lectoraat van de Theaterschool er samen kunnen gaan tot DAS Graduate School.

ontwerpopgave. Het is een inhoudelijke oefening: een uitnodiging een onderwijsinstituut voor de internationale podiumkunsten binnen deze bijzondere context te herlokaliseren. Om omzichtig te traceren waar wij zijn terechtgekomen, wat we hebben aangetroffen en wat er veranderd is. Daarover vertelt deze publicatie, en daarover vertellen de beelden van fotograaf Thomas Lenden.

De Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten koopt één van de drie oorspronkelijke ‘kwadranten’ van het rode baksteen gebouw, rond 5.000 vierkante meter op vier verdiepingen. De enige andere gebouwen die de gemeente heeft behouden zijn de markante Toren Overhoeks (gebouwd door de Nederlandse architect Arthur Staal) en de voormalige bedrijfskantine van Shell waar vandaag cultureel centrum de Tolhuistuin is gevestigd. Samen vormen deze ‘monumenten’ een van de laatste architectonische sporen die herinneren aan het industriële verleden.

Het oog van de camera In de verbouwingsperiode vanaf mei 2015 was het Grootlab voor ons, als toekomstige gebruikers, nagenoeg onbereikbaar. Het ontwerp hadden we op schetsen, plannen en in bespreking aan tafel gevolgd, de daadwerkelijke transformatie, het strippen, slopen en de wederopbouw waren zaak van architecten, aannemers, en ambachtslieden - en van de fotograaf Thomas Lenden. Wij hadden hem gevraagd ‘onze ogen te zijn’ en het proces van dichtbij voor ons te volgen. Lenden bezocht regelmatig de plek, een voortdurend veranderende bouwput, die telkens andere lagen uit de geschiedenis van het laboratorium zichtbaar maakte, en steeds nieuwe perspectieven op aangepaste ruimtes en functies opende. Hij observeert: ‘Alle processen zijn transformerende processen. Vanuit dit perspectief is het zoeken van de fotograaf naar het bewijs van deze transformaties, naar het kunnen aantonen van de verandering even beperkend als de zoektocht naar het definitieve eindbeeld.

Interessanter zijn de momenten waarin het gebouw even op adem lijkt te komen. Hier komen de sporen uit het verleden samen met de toevoegingen van het moment en krijgen willekeurige opstellingen elke keer iets volstrekt tijdloos.’

Dynamiek en oprechte ambities Als wij ons nieuw onderkomen vanaf 2016 eindelijk met medewerkers en studenten in gebruik nemen zijn we ons bewust dat we op een unieke locatie met een rijk en complex verleden terecht zijn gekomen, in een periode waarin het stedelijk gebied volop in ontwikkeling is.

Grootlab is omringd door een aantal reeds voltooide vastgoedprojecten die getuige zijn van de groeiende belangstelling voor Overhoeks vanuit cultuur, toerisme en creatieve industrie.

Maar ook door een grote hoeveelheid nieuwe bouwputten die de voorbode zijn van een nog bedrijvigere toekomst met snel optrekkende hoogbouw. Spanningen vallen niet uit te sluiten.

De oorspronkelijke volkswijken Van der Pek en Volewijck koesteren een sterke eigen identiteit en menig Noorderling vraagt zich af of nieuw en oud elkaar op den duur daadwerkelijk zullen versterken. In het midden van deze dynamiek begint DAS Graduate School in Grootlab met oprechte ambities. Hier willen wij de top van het onderwijs voor de podiumkunsten uitdragen, masteropleidingen en onderzoek verder uitbreiden en versterken. En dat met een eigengereide, kritische gemeenschap van talenten uit de hele wereld.

Graven waar je staat Een van de alumni van de masteropleiding DAS Theatre (voormalig DasArts), de theatermaker Sjoerd Wagenaar, ontleent zijn manier van werken aan een heldere instructie: ‘Graven waar je staat.’4 Wagenaar doet dat letterlijk, met locaties en gemeenschappen. Kunst, verbeelding en archeologie zijn voor hem vanzelfsprekend met elkaar verbonden. Het zal hem deugd doen dat het recent Archeologisch bureauonderzoek in het bestemmingsgebied Overhoeks een bijzondere archeologische dichtheid verwacht.5 Mede doordat een deel van dit terrein van 1409 tot 1795 als galgenveld werd gebruikt, waarop

de lichamen van terechtgestelde misdadigers ter lering en vermaal werden tentoongesteld.

Stadsarcheoloog Jerzy Gawronski voorspelt ‘materiële overblijfselen die samenhangen met ontginning, bewoning en landgebruik vanaf de 10e eeuw.’ Zelf heeft hij tijdens de bouw van de Noord-Zuidlijn 700.000 vondsten uit de bodem gehaald, tastbaar geheugen van AmsterdamNoord, vergeten overblijfselen waarmee hij de stad een spiegel voorhoudt: ‘Als je niet weet waar je vandaan komt, weet je ook niet waar je naartoe gaat.’6 Het typerende aan de bouwprocessen in Overhoeks, en aan de transformatie van Grootlab, is dat het moment van ontdekken, van opgraven en blootleggen steeds maar heel kort mag duren.

De snelheid waarmee sporen worden uitgewist, gaten worden gedicht en bewijslast wordt weggegooid is op zijn minst indrukwekkend. Verleden en heden lijken meer dan ooit uit elkaar gedreven te worden. Als een onderwijsinstelling die voornamelijk met kunstenaars werkt en internationale kunstenaars opleidt, hebben wij echter de mogelijkheid om iets anders te doen dan enkel mee te bewegen met de acceleratie in deze tijd. Juist kunst heeft het vermogen om te verdiepen, te vertragen, om stil te staan, en om te ontsnappen aan onze instrumentele omgang met tijd en ruimte.

We zijn benieuwd naar de manier waarop onze studenten vanuit hun eigen werk en context de dialoog met het gebouw en de plek aangaan.

De Keniaanse theatermaker en verhalenverteller Ogutu Muraya, tweede jaars student DAS Theatre deed dat al, in een lecture performance. Gefascineerd door de vraag welke verhalen wel en niet worden verteld, legde hij de discrepantie bloot tussen de zorgvuldige verwijdering van zware metalen uit de grond van AmsterdamNoord en de vervuiling die door oliebedrijven als Shell elders in de wereld ontstaat. In zijn ogen

moet je geen scheiding aanbrengen tussen hier en daar, toen en nu, maar het leven in al zijn complexiteit omarmen.

Kijken, onthouden, doorvertellen De verwantschap tussen archeologie en podiumkunsten nodigt uit om bruggen te bouwen tussen verschillende periodes en gebeurtenissen.

En misschien zelfs om verantwoordelijkheid te nemen voor onze lotsverbondenheid met andere plekken en mensen, zoals met de geschiedenis van Grootlab. Ook de podiumkunsten bestaan bij de gratie van tijdelijkheid en bewegen altijd op het randje van het verdwijnen. ‘Performance is over as soon as it happens, therefore it always implies an archaeology.’7 Maar hoe maak je een verhaal als er geen artefacten zijn, geen objecten en geen ruïnes? Hoe geef je de relatie tot een plek vorm, de zoektocht naar ‘wat blijft’? En hoe borg je dat het geheugen niet de verbeelding verstikt?

Misschien wel eenvoudigweg door aandacht te hebben, door goed te kijken, te onthouden en weer door te vertellen. Daarmee hebben kunstenaars net als archeologen de kracht om een andere tijdsbeleving te creëren, eentje die de voorbije én de eigen tijd tegelijkertijd aanwezig laat zijn: ‘We think of archaeology of something to do with digging up the past... We can better regard it as a practice set in the present, that works on and with the traces of the past.’8

DAS Graduate School DAS Graduate School has been set up by the Academy of Theatre and Dance as an umbrella organisation for all its master’s, doctorate and research programmes. It brings together under one roof DAS Theatre, DAS Choreography and DAS Research. At the start of 2016, DAS Graduate School started operating from its home in Grootlab, Shell’s former laboratory in North Amsterdam. The school is committed to providing young professionals with a sustainable environment for the further development of their potential. And it is keen to reflect contemporary – twenty-first century – complexities through a cosmopolitan student population. It is a place for experimentation and risk, a ‘persistent pioneer’ exploring the potential of education and research to respond in relevant ways to the challenges of our time. DAS Graduate School is currently limited to two master’s programmes; it will remain receptive to proposals for further expansion and will take action upon identifying gaps in professional practice.

DAS Theatre DAS Theatre is a master’s degree course with years of experience as an educational, production-based and research-orientated hybrid. The two-year, question-based, residential programme acts as a laboratory for professional theatre makers and art workers from all walks of the performing arts. Its students define their goals and research methods in order to foster artistic development. Although the emphasis is placed on individual processes, the main educational strategies are derived from the learning potential of encounters. Exchanges with peers, guest teachers and staff ideally have the character of ‘significant collisions’. The programme encourages ‘professional intimacy’ by inviting artists to provide their colleagues with insights into their working processes.

DAS Choreography DAS Choreography is a two-year, non-residential programme contributing to the international field of critical and contemporary dance research and creation. Dance artists who have established a professional practice and are seeking opportunities for further reflection and development can increase their research skills through this master’s programme. It provides the support structure and facilitating organization for choreographic and interdisciplinary practice-led research, with an emphasis on the processes of praxis. Individual artistic practice is the course’s point of departure and guiding motif.

DAS Research DAS Research coordinates and supports all research groups at the DAS Graduate School, and is responsible for the development of further master programmes and doctorate research.

Focussing on ‘Performing Arts in Transition’, it is operating at the heart of innovation and raising the school’s profile as an expert community in the city. DAS Research takes initiative to organise cross-programme activities and designs specific programmes that may involve external researchers and institutions. Currently DAS Research launched two new research groups: the Local School and the first cohort of PhD candidates.
