November 2011 dineerden Herbert Janse, Judith Wendel en ik in Eleven Madison Park, het allerbeste restaurant van New York. We kwamen daar via de zus van Herbert, die zelf een topkok is en de chef van Eleven Madison Park goed kent. Niet alleen de buitengewoon gastvrije ontvangst, de bijna theatrale ervaring én het werkelijk verrukkelijke eten, maakte het tot een memorabele avond.

Halverwege werden we in de keuken uitgenodigd, waar speciaal voor ons een Manhattan werd bereid. Daar, in het hart van het restaurant, stonden elf begrippen op de muur. Die waren, zo vertelden de eigenaren, geïnspireerd op de muziek van Miles Davis en omarmd als een bron van bezieling en passie. We namen een foto en later die nacht, aangekomen in de meest goedkope biertent in de buurt, spraken we nog lang na over het prachtige eten, de elf begrippen en wat die zouden kunnen betekenen voor de Opleiding Scenografie, waar­bij we alle drie zo nauw betrokken zijn.

It was November 2011 when Herbert Janse, Judith Wendel and I dined at Eleven Madison Park, the best restaurant in New York. We were there thanks to Herbert’s sister, who is a top chef herself and knows the chef at Eleven Madison Park well. It was memorable not only for the warm welcome, the exquisite food and the theatricality of the experience, but also because halfway through the evening we were invited to the kitchen for a custom-made Manhattan. There, at the heart of the restaurant, we spotted a list of eleven words on the wall. They were words used to describe the music of Miles Davis, the owner explained, adopted as an inspiration for the restaur­ant. We took a photo, and later that night, at the cheapest bar in the neighbourhood, we talked for hours about the amazing food, the eleven words, and how they might apply to the Scenography Department with which we were all so closely involved.

Fast-forward to 2016. I had often thought about the idea of publishing a book on scenography. Our field of work benefits Het werd 2016. Vroeger wilde ik boswachter worden. Alleen op avontuur, in een eenzaam bos of op de eindeloze vlakte van een kaal weiland. Ik wilde vogels redden, wilde dieren temmen.

Het bleef meestal bij een dode vogel die ik begroef, een konijnenhol dat ik afschermde met een stapel takken of een tamme kat die ik terug naar huis stuurde. Toch beleefde ik op deze ontdekkingsreizen grote avonturen.

In het landschap van mijn verbeelding was ik een waag­ hals, en bereid grote risico’s te nemen.

As a child, I wanted to be a forest ranger.

Out by myself on an adventure, in a lonely wood or an endless plain of empty grassland.

I wanted to save wild birds, tame wild animals.

Mostly this went no further than burying a dead bird, sheltering a rabbit hole behind a pile of twigs, or returning a pet cat to its home. Nevertheless, on these voyages of exploration I had great adventures. In the landscape of my imagination, I was a dare­ devil, willing to take great risks.

Daring. That was the first word I came across when I looked up the meaning of adventur­ ous. It also mentioned: routes sailed for the first time; a different generation of thinking; adventurous seafarers. To be adventurous, apparently you have to be bold and forth­ Waaghalzerig. Judith Wendel Hij wist nu opeens wat het was om bang te zijn en realiseerde zich dat die angst alleen overwonnen kan worden door wie hem onder ogen ziet. Er waren duizenden dingen waarvoor je bang kon zijn: voor pijn, voor rechters, voor je eigen hart; je was bang voor de slaap, bang om wakker te worden, om alleen te zijn, voor de kou, voor de waanzin, voor de dood – ja vooral daarvoor, de dood. Maar dat waren allemaal slechts maskers en vermommingen. In werkelijkheid is er maar één ding waarvoor men bang is: het-je-latenvallen, de stap in het onbekende, dat kleine pasje over alle zekerheden die er zijn. En wie zich eenmaal, maar één enkele keer had laten gaan, maar één keer dat vertrouwen had gehad en zich aan het lot had over­ geleverd, die was bevrijd.

Is een avontuurlijk ontwerpproces, het loslaten, het open onderzoek, hetzelfde als een avontuurlijke ervaring als toeschouwer? Moet je als kijker ook iets loslaten? In 2009 zette de Poolse beeldhouwer Miroslaw Balka een gigan­ tische container in de Turbine Hall van het Tate Modern.

Hij noemde zijn installatie How It Is. Ik liep er als bezoeker omheen voordat ik ontdekte dat ik er naar binnen kon via een schuin oplopende vloer. Binnen was het aardedonker.

Ik zag letterlijk geen hand voor ogen. Ik tastte de ruimte af, twijfelde. Hoe ver kon ik gaan? De volslagen donkerte was angstaanjagend. ‘Voelt het zo om te sterven?’ dacht ik. Opgaan in het totale niets. Je eigen lijf niet meer zien.

Geen enkele referentie meer hebben aan het mij bekende.

Dat ontheemde gevoel, dat Balka met deze zintuiglijke ruimte creëerde, maakte dat ik me wel moest laten vallen.

Alle houvast was weg. 

Hermann Hesse writes in Klein and Wagner: He suddenly knew what dread was, and that it could be overcome only by one who recognized it. You dreaded a thousand things, pain, judgment, your own heart. You felt dread of sleep, dread of awakening, of being alone, of cold, of madness, of death – especially of that, of death. But all these were only masks and disguises. In reality there was only one thing you dreaded: letting yourself fall, taking the step into uncertainty, the little step beyond all the securities that existed. And whoever had once surrendered himself, one single time, whoever had practiced the great act of confidence and entrusted himself to fate, was liberated.

Hermann Hesse schrijft in ‘Klein und Wagner’:

I sometimes try to imagine how, in a time that people still thought the world was flat, there were some who put to sea in search of unknown places, and did so in the knowledge that they could sail off the edge of this flat plate and tumble endlessly into nothingness.

Is an adventurous design process – the letting go, the open-ended research – the same as an adventurous experience as an audience? As a viewer, do you also have to let go? In 2009, the Polish sculptor Miroslaw Balka put a giant container in the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern. He called his installation How It Is. As a visitor I walked around it before discovering I could enter it via a ramp. Inside, it was pitch-dark. I literally could not see my hand in front of my face.

I felt the space around me, hesitated. How far could I go? The complete darkness was frightening. ‘Is this what it feels like to die?’

I thought. Being absorbed into nothingness.

No longer seeing your own body. Having  no reference to anything I knew.

Balka had me op avontuur gestuurd. In een nieuwe wereld.

Op zee, zonder vertrouwde ankers, waar je zomaar vanaf kon vallen. Zonder een spier te vertrekken.

The uprooted feeling that Balka created with this sensory space meant I had to let myself fall. There was nothing to hold on to.

Only in touching the soft back wall and walking back towards the light did I feel the ground beneath my feet again. Balka had sent me on an adventure. In a new world.

On an ocean, with no familiar anchors, where you could suddenly fall off. Without flinching.
