This workshop offers Korean expressions for shopping, dining, and commonly used phrases to get around Korea.

Each year on the first day of March, Koreans across the peninsula join together to celebrate the national holiday known as Independence Movement or “Samil” Movement Day. The holiday derives its origin from a series of events that occurred on Mar. 1, 1919 throughout Korea to formally protest Japanese occupation. The epicenter of the protests took place at the Taehwagwan Restaurant in Seoul where Koreans read a Declaration of Independence drawn up by famed independence rights activist Choe, Nam-seon. Corresponding with the formal declaration, Korean media aired a series of complaints directed at the Japanese government that called into question employment discrimination, disparity in educational opportunities, forced labor, excessive taxes, unwarranted confiscation of land, and suppression of Korean cultural and historical teachings. Following the announcements, massive crowds assembled peacefully in Pagoda Park to hear student, Chung, Jae-yong, read the declaration publicly. Before long, the peaceable protests turned to violence as panicked Japanese officials called in military forces to quell the protests. During the chaos that ensued numerous protestors were arrested, some were injured and others lost their lives.

While the immediate effects of the protests cost many activist lives, the movement served as a major catalyst for the eventual Korean Independence Movement. In 1949, four years after Korea’s official independence from Japanese rule, the Samil Movement was officially designated as a national holiday.
