Korean Independence Movement Day March 1, 1919

Each year on the first day of March, Koreans across the peninsula join together to celebrate the national holiday known as Independence Movement or “Samil” Movement Day. The holiday derives its origin from a series of events that occurred on Mar. 1, 1919 throughout Korea to formally protest Japanese occupation. The epicenter of the protests took place at the Taehwagwan Restaurant in Seoul where Koreans read a Declaration of Independence drawn up by famed independence rights activist Choe, Nam-seon.

Corresponding with the formal declaration, Korean media aired a series of complaints directed at the Japanese government that called into question employment discrimination, disparity in educational opportunities, forced labor, excessive taxes, unwarranted confiscation of land, and suppression of Korean cultural and historical teachings.

What is your best memory at Kunsan?

I have been cherishing every moment by meeting diverse guests. There are guests who take the time to greet and get to know me, and others who even offer chocolate when I'm tired. Recently, a guest expressed gratitude, along with a gift of hand cream, for always being kind. Working in a profession that involves frequent use of hands, my hands had become rough, and I was truly moved that they paid attention to such details.
