CENTRAL VENTILATION WELL The three-story single house is located in Bangkok's suburban area of Phra pradaeng. The house is settled in a community populated with small dwellings connected by small streets. The neighborhood continually transforms with larger buildings and becomes denser by urban expansions. In response to the brief, the design team sought to maximize the value of a small plot of land while ensuring that the new structure responded to its immediate context. The team arranged the home's internal activities around a 'central well' modeled after the tropical region's shophouses. The well goes through all three house floors with a skylight roof and heat-exhausted grills. This void promotes natural ventilation and brings diffused sunlight into each room. It also connects each floor's activities virtually and socially for the household members. A small swimming pool on the ground floor of this well provides humidity for the entire home to relieve Bangkok's sweltering.

INDOOR AND OUTDOOR The building’s facade is clad with custommade concrete blocks produced by a local manufacturer. It provides varying scales of privacy and helps integrate the building within the neighborhood, which wraps around the structure’s perimeter. The house is wrapped in concrete blocks that provide varying scales of privacy and security while responding to Bangkok’s tropical climate. The house was designed within concepts of Thailand’s traditional open-air house. It provides shades that also allow the proper amount of ventilation through an entire room, providing the comforts of living without any machined air conditioner. Interior spaces are divided into small rooms to maximize surfaces that allow incoming wind and natural light. The house blends indooroutdoor spaces with its semi-outdoor circulation that punctuates around the house.

VENTILATION BLOCK DESIGN Based on Thailand's commonly used building material, these custom-made ventilation blocks were the main features of the facade. The team designed three types of lightweight concrete blocks with a controlled parameter of block manufacturing. Blocks are arranged around the house's upper stories concerning interior spaces and exterior context, creating a different degree of privacy and ventilation throughout the house. Interior and exterior are connected because entire outdoor spaces of patios and circulations in each floor were transformed into semi-outdoor spaces by these layers of concrete blocks.

RE-THINK URBAN FACADE Bangkok is a 240 years city that continues to expand at a rapid rate. Real estates cost are rising and empty plots are rarely be found in most of the city center. Building’s sanitation, electricity, as well as its structure are starting to be out of condition. Thus, Renovation is an efficient solution for dweller's financial and for the city's future development. In a system of urban's socio-economy, the location of the residence is a major key to people's good liveability. Without a re-development of the city, especially in economically important, the city is likely to be designated as a dying city. Situated in an old neighborhood of Bangkok's suburban area where the newly built skytrain is near to be in operation, this old townhouse is a reasonable and affordable location for new comers citizens. This townhouse was rearranged and re-facade to become a part of urban's farming as well as an absorber of Bangkok's air pollution.

THE GROWING FACADE The facade are covered with hanging planters to provide ventilation and comfort as well as security and visual privacy. This facade was made by a light yet durable material, an folded galvanized metal sheet, to minimize the interference of an existing structure. Tiny metal rods were used as a tensile structure to support the weight of plants and soil. These planters are designed to be flexible with low maintenances. They were filled with pots of tropical vegetation selected by the owner. Thai cuisines ingredients such as chilis, basils, and lime were put right beside the kitchen. Thus, Living spaces were fertile with colorful local leaves and flowers. 16

REUSE AND RECYCLE PET bottles are mostly made of recyclable plastic material. However, without a proper collecting process, this product that we use daily is one major component of the ocean's waste. 'Clean the ocean pavilion' is intended to urge people’s awareness of oceans waste and promote ideas of reuse and recycling products. This temporary installation is, frist, located in the center of Milan's Piazza del Cannone of Sempione park. The pavilion was design to collect PET bottles from the pedestrian. It made with bottle structures in combination with wire-mesh frames. After one week, the PET bottles were collected and goes to a recycle process to frabricate shoes that made by 100% recycle textile. 18

The pavilion is enclosed by circular planned wire-mesh walls and columns of rolled mesh that braced at the center by a PET bottle. This bracing provided a structural stiffness for the wall. These walls allowed people to fill it with PET bottles on the outer layer by sticking the bottleneck to the mesh wall. The pavilion is intently designed to let people participate in decorating the pavilion. The Colour, shapes, and density of each mesh wall are varied by pedestrian's participation. The high and the layers of walls created space for activities inside, such as workshops and recreation areas. The pavilion was re-located around the city of Milan and continued to spread the idea.

OPEN TO NATURES IN HARMONY WITH PROPLE Kumamoto’s Artpolis 2014, an International Symposium in Asia Design Competition for a small scale wooden Spa Rehabilitation Facility Annex with “MIN- NANO-IE (Home for All)”, on the theme of “Open to Nature In Harmony with People”. The project aims to propose a new type of public space that can engage people in various activities and allow them to interact with nature and each other. By investigating how people in our local context spend their life in the public realm, we found that in the past, when most of the public space meant outdoor space, tropical climate pushed people to live on the edge of the water. All kinds of lively activities happened along the water, and the most sociable space was also connected to water. Even nowadays, water still carries the notion of public leisure interaction, as we can see in many local examples. Because of the tropical condition, another most sociable public space in Thai culture is a veranda, the space along the edge of the building, where indoor space meets outdoor space, under the shade but without walls, with different levels of floors encouraging people to sit and begin to talk.

MAXIMISE BUILDING EDGE Therefore, the design is an attempt to create a maximum length of 'the building's edge, to become a highly sociable public space by thinning each building to its minimum width, almost as a small band or a line. In doing so, the lines of several buildings encompass the landscapeand define a ready-to-use outdoor space integrating seamlessly with the indoor space. It borrows more space from the landscape with a minimal built area and the outdoor space of the site will not remain unused. The edge of the buildings would also connect with the water of a public open-air foot hot spring where people from two different programs could interact and communicate with each other naturally by the activities that occurred at the edge of the space in public. Water does not only perform itself as a boundary but also as a glue to connect between two functions. These linear spaces allow people to interact and belong to nature. Although the building is a public building, it should allow intimate conversations leisure activities that bond people in the community together, for both Spa annex and Home for All by using a domestic scale of the space domestically public space. All are to create a place where people can feel 'at home' at Home For All.

FORM CATEGORIZATION The project is an experiment of parametric architecture and tectonic design based on a logic of digital technology and vernacular materials and techniques. Based on tension studies, a design team explored possibilities of assembly technic through a combination of the water pipe and elastic wire. It attempted to categorize and compare a physical model with a digital model. The tension force of elastic wires binds water pipes' surfaces together and creates compression between each pipe. This flexible surface of pipes can move and bend to various forms. At this process, parameters were set to study form and surface behaviors changes and then categorize. 28

PARAMETER OF FORMS Ranges and directions of cable wires controlled the installation surface. Each ratio of cable range created a different high of curve and form of the surface. The position and length of the attached wire transform the overall shape of the installation. By studying patterns of these wires, we could predict forms of the surface and make a catalog of each pattern and result. This prediction and categorization are used in further installation design possibilities. 29

INSTALL AND MOBILIZE The installation could be rolled and easily transported to the site. By using a few wires to create form, the cost and construction time of the structure could be saved and reduced significantly. Digital techniques of parametric design and physical models have been used along the process, showing that the vernacular tectonic of Thai context and culture can be adapted to the digital world of architectural design. This experiment shows the Endless possibilities and usage of the surface depending on the program, user, site, and climate.

PHASE : 1 PARAMETER Project explored ways to embrace thin-sheet materials such as metals, plywoods and plastics.Bending was a unique potential of sheet materials. Each kind of material has a specific bending curve and durability. An idea of the project was to study how to control these curve and used these curves of material as a structure. Tension and compression were bases of any structure’s force. So, plastic which has the most rebound force and wood which has the least rebound force were selected to create elastic and solid force to the surface. Polypropylene sheets were cut into triangle to be used as a main surface, combined with sheets of plywood as a control point.

PHASE : 2 PROTO TYPE From studies of digital and physical models, we could catagorize behaviors of material that react to each parameters we put in. We used this catalog to create scheme and form of the pavilion as we could predict and control how each unit react to each other and how it impacts the overall form. Curve of each plastic unit were controlled by the size of plywood which could be adapted in to 3 sizes S, M, L. The smaller the size of plywood is,the more curve of the plastic unit would be.With more dept to the surface it would transform the thickness ofthe surface into a stronger structure.

Every end of the year it drew all type of people from around the world to enjoy music and eco-life style. To respond Wonderfruit's mission to become a zero-footprint festival, The design was made with local-produced recycled plastic mats with a concern of reuseable and mobilization. This off-map pavilion provided shade during the day and enhanced music beats during the night. Disguised in the wood, the hanging roof gave glims of trace that leads wanderers into the sacred space of dance music. The geometric installation immersed itself into gaps of flora as a butterfly’s flock invaded the wood.

The Butterfly effect is named for its ability to close and open its wing. The installation is a set of folded mats on grids of rope and solid rods. A recycled-plastic mat is a material that behaves between a fabric and a rigid plane. Folding this material creates a structural property for the roof and forms a triangle shape that catches the light. A seam of the unit was patched by a strip of reflecting fabric which creates an illusive effect when it is touched by a flash and merge the installation to activities beneath. The pavilion reveals a contrasting appearance between day and night. A foldable plane gives efficient mobility and capability of covering a large area, yet is flexible to be adapted for different conditions.

The norm of thermal comfort in UAE depends greatly on air-conditioned space on 24/7 with the indoor temperature of under 20 degree C. The extreme temperature difference between indoor and outdoor during the day always keeps people inside. New buildings tend to become a mega air-conditioned structure encompassing all activities such as in the case of the new typology of the public school in Sharjah. The inhabitants become less and less exposed to natural environment. The excessive use of active cooling system as such tends to grow higher as well as the CO2 emission.
52
PASSIVE COOLING ROOF metal hook aluminum pipe sunshade net nylon robe

Buildings in the middle-east have been using passive cooling to reduce scorching weather and sandy wind for many years. Mansory windcatchers mostly found at the center of the building provide passive ventilation for indoor spaces by drawing out the heat that is gathering in-ground and venting it out with the leeward at the tower's top. They can also facilitate evaporative cooling with the help of water reservoirs inside the building's courtyard. Thus, the building would have comfortable temperature and humidity. The intricate fabric roof is designed to give a cover to the courtyard adjacent to an airconditioned gallery in Al Qasimiyah School to create the transitional space. During the day, heat from the ground, which is the major contributor to the air temperature, is reduced by the shade of the roof in the courtyard. The outdoor air will be cooled down, reducing the temperature difference. During the night, when the air temperature above the ground drops greatly, the heat that remains in the ground will be transferred to the atmosphere via the porous pattern of the fabric roof.
55
LOW CARBON EMISSION The prototype intends to sustainably reduce the CO2 emission of the city and promote daytime outdoor activities for its residents. It challenges other heavy structures and their carbon footprint by using a lightweight installing system. An installation does not require an advanced procedure and intends to be adjustable for different contexts. The proposition does hope to initiate a passive cooling awareness for new buildings and bring a transformation of existing buildings to meet a thermal condition that allows its inhabitants to live better both indoor and outdoor. 56

A city of Bourges is a tourist destination for many years. However, The city is losing its title according to the migration of the young generation to larger cities. The design team selected to propose a new model of the BNB that might raise the numbers of tourists in Bourges. Bourges has many historical places such as the largest romanesque gothic cathedrals and medieval old town. An idea is to keep the city's charming characteristics and input a new addition to create some movement and freshness to the city. A hotel pod acts as a parasite that attracts and extends to parts of the existing building. The location of each pod was selected concerning the city's attraction and socio-economy. 60

Role : Architecture Student Adviser : Pramote Tangtiang Rachaporn Choochuey Ponn Virulrak Chomchon Fusinpaiboon Pat Seeumpornroj Category : Architectural Thesis Year : 2016 Area : 40,700 sqm Location : Songkhla, Thailand The thesis proposal is located in the existing train junction in the high-density commercial area known as the center of Hat-yai province. The old station was built in 1917, and it has been an iconic landmark for the city of Hat-yai for southern travelers for many years. Hatyai junction is the largest station between the Thailand-Malaysia border. Hat-Yai railway junction architectural thesis was created to support the development of the Southern high-speed rail system, which integrated with the SRT rail system to serve increasing demand in rail transportation. According to Thailand’s land transportation development masterplan, the new Hatyai’s high-speed railway station would welcome more than 65,800 passengers per year and become a significant interchange node for the south. This development will connect to systems of local buses, regional mediumspeed trains, and personal vehicles that bring travelers and economic benefits to Hatyai. 64

RE-CONNECTED THE CITY Due to Hat-yai landuse master plan, the area nearby the station was planned as a commercial area. However, from a recent survey, the west side of the station yard has been used as a residential area. This situation is caused by two main reasons. First, the large area of the station yard and railways has separated the city into two isolated sides. There are few overpasses that connect each side of the station. Second, The existing railway station is only accessible through the east gate. It creates overloaded traffic and a crowded station. This lack of connectivity and accessibility causes the shortage of the city's growing process and affects the economy of the whole Hat-yai province.

MULTI-FUNCTION BRIDGE The project intends to create an architecture that acts as a train station and as a bridge to connect the east and west side of the city. The building brings a mixture of Hatyai's unique foods and goods as well as provides convenience and comfort for travelers from around the region. This bridge was placed between high-speed and regular-speed train platform levels, which acted as a main floor of the station to welcome all passengers from any modes of transportation. The Comercial zone of the building was placed along the central axis, which acts as the main circulation leading passengers to the ticketing area. Waiting areas were placed punctually along with shops, restaurants, and local-product stores. It gives a sense of Thailand’s street-food culture and stimulates other activities to the place. The station itself is a platform of cultural and economic interchange. It instigates an iconic area with a new infrastructure that creates employment for the locals without interrupting its unique identity. 68
