liebe dear readers leser*innen »Jedes Mal, wenn ich ein Problem hatte, habe ich es mit der Axt der Kunst konfrontiert« offenbart die 1929 in Japan geborene Künstlerin Yayoi Kusama [18]. Können Kunst und Kultur behilflich sein, Probleme und Herausforderungen zu überwinden? Wenn ja, dann sollte Kusamas Offenbarung als Anreiz dienen, die Türen der Institutionen grade jetzt, in einer von Ungewissheit und Sorge geprägten Zeit, offen zu halten.

Museen, Ausstellungshäuser und Gedenkstätten sind Orte der Bildung, des Austauschs, der Reflexion und stärken den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt. Demnach hoffen wir, im Jahr 2021 wieder viele anregende Konfrontationen mit Kunst und Kultur ermöglichen zu können.

»Every time I have had a problem, I have confronted it with the ax of art« reveals the artist Yayoi Kusama [18], born in Japan in 1929. Can art and culture help to overcome problems and challenges? If so, then Kusama’s revelation should serve as an encouragement to open the doors of cultural institutions especially right now, in times of uncertainty and concern. Museums, exhibition halls and memorials are spaces of education, exchange and reflection and strengthen the social cohesion. Let us hope that in 2021 we will again be able to enable many stimulating confrontations with art and culture.

BERLIN ARCHITECTURE IN THE 1980S

In Berlin gibt es eine einzigartige Dichte von bemerkenswerten Bauten aus den 1980er Jahren, deren Bedeutung es nach mehr als 30 Jahren zu überprüfen gilt. Ihre vielfältige und bunte Architektursprache stellte bisherige Vorstellungen einer modernen Lebenswelt in Frage. Gerne mit dem Etikett der »Postmoderne« versehen, kennzeichnet sie die Verwendung von Bautypen und Stilmitteln der Vergangenheit sowie die Erprobung alternativer Lebensweisen in der Großstadt. Als Beiträge zur Internationalen Bauausstellung 1984/87 (West) und der Bauausstellung 1987 (Ost) im Rahmen der 750 Jahr-Feier entstanden, glich Berlin einer Art Architekturlabor, das weit über die Stadtgrenzen hinaus wahrgenommen wurde. Bereits zur Entstehungszeit als kunstvolle Fehlgriffe kritisiert, sind wichtige Zeugnisse dieser Bauepoche heute verschwunden, überformt oder vom Abriss bedroht. Die Ausstellung untersucht erstmalig, was und wer die für Ost- und West-Berlin im letzten Jahrzehnt vor dem Mauerfall entwickelten Bauten und Visionen prägte.

Berlin boasts a unique concentration of noteworthy buildings from the 1980s, and more than 30 years later they deserve a review. The colourful diversity of this architectural vocabulary challenged previous ideas of living in the modern world. Widely labelled »postmodern«, it drew on structural typologies and stylistic devices from the past and tested alternative urban lifestyles. In the run-up to the celebrations marking 750 years since the original town charter, the entries submitted to the »Internationale Bauausstellung« in West Berlin in 1984/87 and the »Bauausstellung» of 1987 in East Berlin turned the city into a kind of architectural laboratory observed from well beyond its boundaries. Even at the design stage, some were already attracting criticism as artistically misguided, and significant examples of this era in architecture have since disappeared, been revamped or else threatened by demolition. This exhibition is the first attempt to show who and what set their stamp on the buildings and visions developed for East and West Berlin in the final decade before the Wall fell.

DAUERAUSSTELLUNG

PERMANENT EXHIBITION

Die Berlinische Galerie stellt auf mehr als 1000 Quadratmetern ihre Sammlung in neuer Frische und Vielfalt vor. Unter den rund 250 ausgestellten Arbeiten sind selten oder noch nie gezeigte Werke aus Malerei, Grafik, Fotografie, Architektur und den Archiven zu entdecken. Der Rundgang ist eine Zeitreise durch Berlin in 18 Kapiteln: Kaiserreich, Weimarer Republik, nationalsozialistische Diktatur, Neuanfang nach 1945, Kalter Krieg in der geteilten Stadt und die sich im Schatten der Mauer in Ost und West entwickelnden alternativen Gesellschafts- und Lebensentwürfe. In Ost-Berlin bildete sich ab den späten 1970er Jahren eine alternative Kulturszene aus. In West-Berlin zogen die aggressiven Werke der Neuen Wilden ab Ende der 1970er Jahre erneut international Aufmerksamkeit auf die geteilte Stadt.

Durch ein taktiles Bodenleitsystem erhalten blinde und sehbehinderte Besucher*innen barrierefreien Zugang zur Dauerausstellung.

The Berlinische Galerie will be presenting its collection with renewed vigour and diversity. Waiting to be discovered among the roughly 250 works on show are paintings, prints, photographs, architecture and archive materials rarely or never displayed before. Walking around this exhibition is like time travel through Berlin: the Kaiser’s era, the Weimar Republic, the Nazi dictatorship, the new beginnings after 1945, Cold War in the divided city, and the countercultures and unconventional lifestyles that evolved in East and West under the shadow of the Wall. In East Berlin, an alternative art community developed from the late 1970s. In West Berlin from the late 1970s, aggressive art by the »Neue Wilden« placed the divided city back in the international limelight. Tactile floor markings guide the blind and visually impaired independently through the permanent exhibition.

vivian suter — Zum ersten Mal tritt die Sammlung des Brücke-Museums mit der Künstlerin Vivian Suter (* 1949) in einen direkten Dialog mit einer zeitgenössischen Position. Die Lage des Museums am Rande des Grunewalds entfaltet bei dieser Gegenüberstellung ihr Potential: Sie reflektiert die Verbundenheit der Brücke-Künstler mit der Natur und bietet für Suter, in deren Arbeiten sich Natur fest einschreibt, eine besonders anregende Ausstellungssituation. Atelier und Wohnhaus der Künstlerin liegen am Rande der Kleinstadt Panajachel, Guatemala nahe des Vulkansees Atitlán. Inspiriert von der üppigen Vegetation bemalt sie dort mit Acryl- und Ölfarbe, auch mit Regenwasser und Erde, ihre Leinwände. Da sie häufig im Freien arbeitet, hinterlassen herabfallende Blätter, Wassertropfen oder Tiere Spuren auf ihren Werken.

Im Brücke-Museum werden Suters Arbeiten zusammen mit Gemälden und kunsthandwerklichen Arbeiten der Sammlung ausgestellt. Eine Auswahl dieser Arbeiten traf noch die in diesem Frühjahr verstorbene Künstlerin Elisabeth Wild, Vivian Suters Mutter. Auch eine Reihe von Wilds präzise komponierten, kleinformatigen Collagen sind Teil der Präsentation.

The exhibition by the ArgentinianSwiss artist Vivian Suter (born 1949 in Buenos Aires, lives and works in Panajachel, Guatemala) marks the first time that the Brücke-Museum’s collection will enter into direct dialogue with a contemporary artist. This comparative exhibition allows the museum’s location on the edge of the Grunewald forest to really unfold its potential: it reflects the Brücke artists’ connection to nature and it offers Suter, whose works are also deeply influenced by nature, a particularly stimulating exhibition setting. The artist’s studio and home are on the outskirts of the small town of Panajachel, Guatemala, near the volcanic Lake Atitlán. Inspired by the lush vegetation, she paints her canvases there with acrylic and oil paint, as well as rainwater and earth.

As she often works outdoors, falling leaves, water droplets, and animals all leave their mark on her works. Suter’s works are exhibited in the BrückeMuseum alongside paintings and craft objects from the collection. The works from the Brücke-Museum’s collection were selected by the artist Elisabeth Wild, Vivian Suter’s mother.

A series of her small-format collages will also be on view.

Der Berliner Architekt und Stadtplaner Werner Düttmann wäre am 6. März 2021 hundert Jahre alt geworden. Die Ausstellung würdigt dieses Jubiläum. Als Architekt, Senatsbaudirektor (1960–66), Professor an der Technischen Universität Berlin (1966–70) und Präsident der Akademie der Künste, Berlin (1971–83) war Düttmann zu Lebzeiten eine der zentralen Persönlichkeiten im Stadtund Kulturleben von West-Berlin. In seinen unterschiedlichen Funktionen prägte er das Gesicht und die Struktur dieser Stadt – von Reinickendorf bis nach Dahlem, von Neukölln bis nach Spandau. Das Spektrum seiner Arbeiten umfasst Wohn- und Kulturbauten, öffentliche Plätze, Gemeinschafts- und Verkehrsbauten. Ganz im Sinne der äußerst kommunikativen Persönlichkeit Düttmanns ist das Projekt netzwerkartig angelegt.

Rund 30 seiner heute noch existierenden Bauten und Plätze werden in die Ausstellung einbezogen und kostenfrei vor Ort erfahrbar gemacht. Neben dem Brücke-Museum, wo die Hauptausstellung zu sehen ist, zählen hierzu die Akademie der Künste und die Hansabücherei, ebenso wie die Verkehrskanzel am Ku’damm oder St. Agnes in Kreuzberg.

Brücke-Box In der Brücke-Box befinden sich Materialien und Werkzeuge, die eine spielerische Kunstbetrachtung unterstützen: Es geht um Farben, Formen und Geschichten. Die Brücke-Box kann kostenlos an der Kasse ausgeliehen werden.

The Berlin architect and urban planner Werner Düttmann would have turned a hundred years old on 6 March 2021. This anniversary will be celebrated with the largescale exhibition. As an architect, head of the Senate Building Department (1960–66), professor at the Technische Universität of Berlin (1966–70), and president of the Akademie der Künste (1971–83), Düttmann was one of the central figures in the life and culture of West Berlin during his lifetime. In his various functions, he left his mark on the public face and structure of this city – from Reinickendorf to Dahlem, from Neukölln to Spandau. The spectrum of his works includes residential and cultural buildings, public squares, community and traffic structures. Very much in the spirit of Düttmann’s communicative personality, this project is conceived like a network.

Around thirty of his buildings and squares in Berlin will be integrated into the exhibition. In addition to Brücke-Museum, where the main exhibtion is located, these include, among others, the Akademie der Künste, the Hansa Library as well as the traffic tower on Kurfürstendamm and the St. Agnes Church.

Wie genau funktioniert das eigentlich mit dem Fliegen? Die Schüler*innen begeben sich in dieser interaktiven Museumstour auf eine Reise durch die Geschichte der Luftfahrt: von den ersten Gleitflügen Otto Lilienthals über die Anfänge des Motorflugs bis zum modernen Cockpit. Immer dabei ist das Mitmach-Heft »Traum vom Fliegen«, das nach der Führung mit nach Hause genommen werden kann.

How exactly is it possible to fly at all? In this interactive museum tour, the students embark on a journey through the history of aviation – from Otto Lilienthal’s first glider flights to the beginnings of engine-powered flight and finally to the modern cockpit. The booklet »The Dream of Flying« that is given to each participant as an interactive aid can be taken home after the tour.

Die Industrielle Revolution ist ein bekanntes Schlagwort, aber was bedeutet sie genau? Schüler*innen erkunden, wie sich die Lebensumstände von Arbeiterinnen und Arbeitern gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts durch technische Innovationen veränderten. Sie entdecken zentrale Entwicklungen der europäischen Sozialgeschichte und ihre Auswirkungen, die unsere Gesellschaft bis heute prägen. Sie diskutieren aus verschiedenen Perspektiven über soziale Fragen und moderne Industriekultur und präsentieren ihre Ergebnisse.

»Industrial revolution« is a wellknown phrase, but what exactly does it mean? Students will explore how technical innovations changed the living conditions of workers towards the end of the 18th century. They will identify central developments in European social history and trace the resulting changes to the social fabric that served to shape the society of today. The students will then discuss social issues and modern industrial culture from various perspectives and present their findings.

postscriptum. »ostarbeiter« im deutschen in the german reich Die Ausstellung »pOSTscriptum – ›Ostarbeiter‹ im Deutschen Reich« der Gesellschaft Memorial erinnert an die rund 3 Millionen sowjetischen Frauen, Männer und Kinder, die während des Zweiten Weltkrieges Zwangsarbeit für das NS-Regime leisten mussten. Sie ist als Freiluftausstellung am Außenzaun des Dokumentationszentrums NSZwangsarbeit zu sehen.

The exhibition »pOSTscriptum – ›Ostarbeiter‹ in the German Reich« by the Memorial Society commemorates the around 3 million Soviet women, men and children who had to do forced labor for the Nazi regime during the Second World War. It can be seen as an open-air exhibition on the outer fence of the Nazi Forced Labor Documentation Center.

A RETROSPECTIVE

Ein wesentliches Anliegen der Retrospektive ist es, die Entwicklung von Kusamas Schaffen von frühen Gemälden und akkumulativen Skulpturen hin zu immersiven Erlebnisräumen nachzuzeichnen und insbesondere ihre bislang wenig beachtete künstlerische Aktivität in Deutschland und Europa aufzuarbeiten. Seit den 1960er Jahren hatte sich die Künstlerin selbst aktiv dafür eingesetzt, Ausstellungsprojekte jenseits ihres damaligen Lebensmittelpunktes New York zu realisieren und ihre Arbeiten im europäischen Kontext zu präsentieren. Dabei rückt auch die Rolle Kusamas als Pionierin des Personal Branding ins Blickfeld, die ihre künstlerische Persona und ihr multidisziplinäres Schaffen schon früh bewusst inszenierte und vermarktete. Der wegweisende Charakter ihrer Präsentationsformen und künstlerischen Sujets wird im Rahmen der Retrospektive durch Rekonstruktionen erlebbar, die Kusamas frühe Ausstellungsprojekte in Deutschland und Europa in den 1960er Jahren sowie zentrale Einzelausstellungen in den USA und Asien aus den 1950er bis 1980er Jahren zugänglich machen.

The retrospective will focus primarily on tracing the development of Kusama’s creative output from her early paintings and accumulative sculptures to her immersive environments, as well exploring her lesserknown artistic activity in Germany and Europe. Since the 1960s, the artist has been actively engaged in realising exhibition projects outside the former centre of her life in New York and showing her work in a European context. This has also brought to the fore Kusama’s role as a pioneer of personal branding, who early on in her practice intentionally staged and marketed her own artistic persona and multidisciplinary work. Within the exhibition framework, reconstructions will allow viewers to experience the pioneering nature of her presentational forms and artistic subjects, making accessible Kusama’s early exhibition projects in Germany and Europe in the 1960s and central solo exhibitions in the USA and Asia from the 1950s to 1980s.

EXPERIENCING ARTWORKS WITH MULTIPLE SENSES

In der Sonderausstellung »Mit Händen sprechen« findet sich eine Auswahl von Kunstwerken, in denen Hände eine besondere Rolle spielen. Oft sind sie übermäßig groß dargestellt.

Geballt, hochgestreckt oder schützend umgreifend – die Hände auf den Bildern von Käthe Kollwitz erzählen über Liebe und Geborgenheit, oder aber kündigen Gefahr oder Leid an. Wenn Hände sprechen können, können sie auch sehen? Dieser Frage gehen die Schüler*innen in dem Workshop »Wir tasten uns ran« nach. Nach einem sinneserweckenden Einstieg werden ausgewählte Exponate der Ausstellung ertastet und zeichnerisch untersucht. Im Anschluss fertigen die Teilnehmenden anhand ihrer eigenen Zeichnungen Tastreliefs an. In dem Workshop sind sehende und nicht-sehende Personen willkommen.

In the exhibition »Talking with Hands«, one finds a selection of artworks, where hands play a special role. They are often shown excessively large. Clenched, stretched out or gripped protectively – the hands in Käthe Kollwitz’s pictures tell about love and security, or they announce danger or suffering. If hands can speak, can they also see? The participants will investigate this question in the workshop »grope your way«.

After an introduction awakening the senses, selected artworks of the exhibition will be examined with multiple senses and in different ways. Afterwards, the participants use their own drawings to create tactile reliefs. Sighted and not-sighted people are welcome to this workshop.

leonilson: drawn 1975–1993 José Leonilson (1957–1993) zählt zu den wichtigsten Vertreter*innen einer Generation brasilianischer Künstler*innen, die nach dem Ende der Militärdiktatur Mitte der 1980er Jahre durch ihre expressive, sozialkritische Malerei bekannt wurde. Bereits während seines Studiums in São Paulo reiste Leonilson regelmäßig nach Europa und lernte Künstler*innen wie Eva Hesse, Blinky Palermo und die italienische Transavanguardia-Bewegung kennen, die seine frühen Arbeiten beeinflussen sollten. Mit seiner HIVDiagnose 1991 änderte sich Leonilsons Bildsprache spürbar: Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Tod und sein schlechter werdender körperlicher Zustand prägen die tagebuchartigen Arbeiten. Gegen Ende seines Lebens war es ihm nur noch möglich, an Stickereien zu arbeiten, in denen Sprache, Abstraktion sowie religiöse Bild- und Formensprache zentral waren. Die Retrospektive in den KW zeigt erstmals in Europa eine Auswahl von über 250 Arbeiten und bietet einen Überblick über sein künstlerisches Schaffen.

José Leonilson (1957–93) is one of the most important exponents of a generation of Brazilian artists who became known for their expressive, socially critical paintings after the end of the Brazil’s military dictatorship in the mid1980s. Already during his studies in São Paulo, Leonilson traveled regularly to Europe and met artists such as Eva Hesse, Blinky Palermo and the Italian transavanguardia movement, which influenced his early works. With his HIV diagnosis in 1991, Leonilson’s visual language changed significantly: his work, which resembled a diary, betrayed his deteriorating health and a preoccupation with death. Towards the end of his life, he was only able to realize embroidery. In this period, language and abstraction, as well as religious visual and formal language were central to his work. For the first time, the retrospective at KW presents a selection of over 250 works in Europe and provides an overview of his entire oeuvre.

A CREATIVE SEARCH FOR TRACES ALONG KW

Wer oder was sind die KW? Nur ein altes Gebäude? Eine (Traum-)Fabrik?

Ein gemütlicher Garten zum Chillen?

Welche Spuren der Zeit finden sich und warum sind sie hier? Wo versteckt sich die Geschichte hinter der Architektur? In diesem Workshop erkunden Schüler*innen gemeinsam durch spielerisch-kreative und interaktive Übungen, wie sich über die letzten Jahrhunderte Menschen, Krisen, Umbrüche und Ideen in das Gebäude der KW (kurz für Kunst-Werke) und die Nachbarschaft des Scheunenviertels eingeschrieben haben. Anhand einer gemeinsamen Spurensuche können die Teilnehmenden sich selbst, ihre eigenen Geschichten und das, was sie umgibt, mit der Geschichte des Ortes in einen widerständigen Austausch bringen. Ziel des Workshops ist, Kindern und Jugendlichen unterschiedlichen Alters die Institution und die Geschichte des Hauses vorzustellen und durch spielerische Übungen sowie Gruppenarbeit einen individuellen Zugang zu ermöglichen.

What traces of time does one find and why are they here? Where is the history behind the architecture?

In this workshop, the students will explore together with playful, creative and interactive exercises how people, crises, changes, and ideas that have inscribed themselves into the KW building and the neighbourhood of the Scheunenviertel over the past centuries. On the basis of a common search for traces, the participants can bring themselves, their own stories and what surrounds them into a resistant exchange with the history of the place. The aim of the workshop is to introduce the institution and the history of the area to children and young adults of different ages and to enable an individual approach through artistic approaches and group work.

Die Sonderausstellung »Hautnah!« reflektiert das kreative Werk Barbara Baums entlang ihrer großen Filme wie »Die Ehe der Maria Braun« (BRD 1978, Regie: Rainer Werner Fassbinder), »Homo Faber« (D/F/GR 1991, Regie: Volker Schlöndorff) oder »Buddenbrooks« (D 2008, Regie: Heinrich Breloer). »Hautnah!« ist auch eine Ausstellung »zum Anfassen«, die mit einem taktilen Ausstellungskonzept blinden und sehbehinderten Menschen Baums Arbeit vermittelt.

Die Ausstellung »Berlin 1933–1945.

Zwischen Propaganda und Terror« thematisiert die nationalsozialistische Politik in Berlin und ihre Folgen für die Stadt und ihre Bevölkerung. Sie zeigt, wie es den Nationalsozialisten gelang, im »roten« Berlin Fuß zu fassen und die Stadt zum politischen Zentrum ihrer Herrschaft auszubauen. Entlang der freigelegten Kellermauerreste im Ausstellungsgraben des Außengeländes informieren die farblich unterschiedlich gestalteten Hauptkapitel der Ausstellung über: Das Berlin der Weimarer Republik (I), Etablierung der Führerdiktatur in Berlin (II), Berlin und die »Volksgemeinschaft« (III), Berlin im Krieg 1939–1945 (IV) und Berlin und die Folgen der NS-Herrschaft (V). Die Ausstellung im Außenbereich des Geländes ist durch eine neue Beleuchtungsstrategie nun auch während der Wintermonate für Besucher*innen zugänglich.

The exhibition »Berlin 1933–1945: Between Propaganda and Terror« addresses National Socialist policy in Berlin and its consequences for the city and its population. It shows how the National Socialists were able to gain a foothold in »red« Berlin and gradually establish the city as the political center of its leadership. The main chapters of the exhibition are arranged in different colours in a trench along the exposed segments of a cellar wall oft he outdoor area and provide information about: Berlin in the Weimar Republic (I), Establishing the Führer’s Dictatorship (II), Berlin and the »People’s Community« (III), Wartime in Berlin 1939–1945 (IV); and Berlin and the Consequences of the Nazi Regime (V). Thanks to a new lighting strategy, the exhibition in the outdoor area is now accessible to visitors even during the winter months.

SPANDAU UND DIE GRÜNDUNG SPANDAU AND THE FOUNDING OF VON GROß-BERLIN 1920 GREATER BERLIN IN 1920 Die Eingemeindung Spandaus 1920 zu Groß-Berlin war für die Spandauer*innen ein Ereignis, das bis heute – mehr oder weniger scherzhaft – als »Zwang«, manchmal sogar als »Enteignung« bezeichnet wird. Doch warum hat sich Spandau so dagegen gewehrt? Welche anderen Themen waren in den 1920ern in Spandau wichtig – und wirken manchmal erstaunlich aktuell: Im Spannungsfeld zwischen Berliner Verwaltung, Spandauer Magistrat und dem Alltag der Bewohner*innen Spandaus werden die Themen Verkehr, Arbeit, Freizeit, Wohnen, Militär und politische Zusammenstöße vorgestellt. Diese waren prägend für Spandau um 1920 und sind grundlegend für die heutige (Selbst-)Wahrnehmung des Bezirks.

The incorporation of Spandau into Greater Berlin in 1920 was an event for the people of Spandau, which is still today – more or less jokingly – called »compulsion«, sometimes even »expropriation«. But why did Spandau resist it so much? Which other topics were important in Spandau in the 1920s – and sometimes seem surprisingly topical: In the area of conflict between the Berlin administration, the Spandau magistrate and the everyday life of Spandau’s residents, the topics of traffic, work, leisure, housing, the military and political clashes are presented. These were formative for Spandau around 1920 and are fundamental for the district’s (self-)perception today. Learn more about the change from the stubborn city to the self-ironic part of Berlin in a dialogical tour and have the option to focus your tour on one of the exhibition’s topics.
