“Only if we fully understand cancer can we come up with effective treatments” In the clinic, the lecture hall and the research lab, Professor Baki Topal strives for better survival rates for cancer patients. Using the latest technologies – co-financed by the donors of Opening the future – he and his team try to develop tailor-made therapies for each and every cancer patient.
“It is twice as hard to fight for peace and prosperity as it is to fight a war. But it is worth so much more to do so.” The America Europe Fund wants to strengthen the ties between America and Europe. A conference on the relationship between Europe and the US held in 2021 attracted nearly 2,000 people. European Commissioner Margrethe Vestager gave a speech that underlined the importance of transatlantic cooperation.
Thanks to the solidarity of our generous donors, our researchers were able to deepen their scientific knowledge in 2021 and thereby continue to make an important contribution to society.

INSPIRING PROJECTS In the past year, we once again counted on your engagement. You gave fresh impetus to important initiatives whose value may not be obvious at first glance. From fundamental to applied research. From technological innovation to ancient heritage. From Leuven students to research fellows from the Global South. You, too, can set things in motion and start your own project. We are happy to support such efforts. Here are some notable initiatives for inspiration.
Roger Dillemans Fund Education Since its establishment in 2005, this scholarship fund has made more than 100 dreams come true. In the past academic year, eight fellows were given the opportunity to further their education at KU Leuven and broaden their horizons.
Kevin Bonnez pursued an education master's degree in languages with a grant from the Roger Dillemans Fund.
“After my studies, I would like to help make up for the acute shortage of teachers of English and Dutch. Hopefully I can make a difference for the next generation of students.”
Move for Cape Town International engagement The University of Cape Town lost numerous rare books and manuscripts in a violent fire. More than 80 sports enthusiasts walked, cycled and swam together to raise an impressive 14,000 euros to rebuild the burned-out Jagger Library.
Hydroko Chair Fundamental research With the establishment of this new chair, Hydroko supports the research for technological innovations to encourage economical water management. Together with Hydroko, we strive to see a world in which water is carefully and efficiently managed.
Pauscollege renovation Heritage In 2021, almost 20,000 euros were raised to preserve the history of the centuries-old Pauscollege and make it accessible to future generations. Thanks in part to these donations, preservationists will be able to start archive historical documentation on the student residence and organise a permanent exhibition.
Lara’s fund Healthcare In August 2021, Lara Switten lost her battle against cervical cancer. In her memory, her family and friends established Lara's Fund, which gives boosts Leuven cancer research. Since then, more than 30,000 euros have been raised.
