An 1960’s apartment has been converted into a serene and luminous space.

The north-west axis has been cleared from impediments to allow natural light to penetrate the apartment and unite different functions. The day and night areas follow one another in a continuous, unrestricted flow of space. The living area and bedroom are linked by means of a raised level clad in oak planks.

Three distinct elements organize the space and different functions. A curved surface hides utilities, such as kitchen, wet area and laundry closet. Two white freestanding volumes acts as divisions and pull-out bookcases. The apartment’s concrete beam acts as a solid line which reminds the flats former spatial division.

Artificial lighting acts as a synthetic tool, highlighting areas with the least possible means. The rigorous geometry, combined with the free flow of space and natural materials – the two main materials are limestone and oak wood – convey a feeling of warmness and timelessness.

The new Museum will house the richness of the Athenian findings and is designed as the end of the route that joins the archaeological sites of Athens and ends in Plato’s Academy grove. The direct proximity of significant antiquities led to the decision of opening the entire Museum towards the archaeological horizon at level -4.50. The building is shaped as excavated pits which are covered by a roof that filters the attic light.

The lower level houses the central entrance area, part of the periodical exhibitions, the amphitheater, the refreshment bar-restaurant and the permanent collection exhibitions. Τhe rest of the temporary exhibitions, the offices of the Museum Administration and the Ephorate of Antiquities, the International Community of Academies and part of the permanent collection are placed inside 3 white volumes, resting above the lower excavated level.

The roof completes and unifies the synthesis, by creating pergolas that shade. It consists of a 5x5 m. truss with CLT (cross laminated timber) wooden beams, and composes a luminous surface that gives life to the museum’s exhibits. It is designed in 4 modules measuring 55x36 m. with an independent wooden carrier with metal joints.

1. the base is the Attic earth with its layers visible on the surfaces of the walls that make up the lower level of the visitors’ movement, the middle part is 2. the park itself through the extensive glazing of the building, reflecting both the exhibits and the trees and 3. the roof as a crowning, inspired by the excavation grid. The whole synthesis takes on the character of an archaeological excavation.

Tratsela Maria (mtrats@arch.auth.gr), Vitopoulou Athina (avitopolulou@arch.auth.gr)

Thessaloniki, formerly a city full of active streams, is in urgent need for revitalizing lost natural ecosystems. The main objectives of the proposal for the design of the Polygnotou stream were: enhancing the existing vegetation, restoring spatial continuity as well as positioning new functions while respecting the topography of the area. Both public space and landscape are seen as a dynamic and continuous field; a hive (bee society) that unites, senses, cooperates and has lively activity.

By articulating micro-locations, circulation and vegetation, a restored ecosystem is proposed, which spatially takes the form of trapezoidal and triangular shapes of different materiality. The unified character arises through repeated gestures that provide awareness, while underlining the fact that individual cells / hives are part of one structure and aim to co-exist.

Polygnotou and Parmenidou streets, on either side of the stream, acquire a purely urban character. Urbanity is achieved through continuous hard flooring and widenings towards the stream, which are configured as observation platforms / standing areas. The Eastern side of Polygnotou street gradually degrades and introduces the visitor to a single walking route and various spatial events.

The new media campus will be located on the historic site of the former Berlin Wall, which once divided the city and the world, directly opposite the existing Axel Springer Tower. While shaping a vision for the new Axel Springer Headquarters, we proposed an iconic high-rise building, which combines the urban city blocks of West Berlin with the modernist towers of the East side.

Why not

We designed a 22 storey tower, leaving ground level free for it to be transformed into a vibrant plaza and added a hanging, column-free suspended platform in correspondence with the skyline of the typical West Berlin blocks. A podium shapes the public plaza, with multiple movable platforms, capable of hosting different kind of outdoor events such as open markets, film screenings and ad-hoc urban activities.

The building’s concept of transparency and openness also references the digital media company’s ethos.
