CIS REFORM: OPERATIONAL GOVERNANCE OR TAX COMPLIANCE?

The latest CIS reform is a clear signal that supply chain assurance can no longer be approached as a purely administrative exercise. Although the changes that came into force on 6 April may cause short-term concern, they should be seen as a necessary and welcome step for the sector.

HMRC’s tougher anti-fraud measures mark a significant shift in how liability is assessed across the supply chain. Where a business knew, or should have known, that a payment was linked to fraud, HMRC now has the power to remove gross payment status immediately, recover the related tax loss and impose penalties. In practice, that places greater emphasis on a contractor’s ability to demonstrate clear oversight of how labour is sourced, engaged, verified and paid.

For too long, construction has operated with fragmented labour models, opaque subcontracting chains and paper-based processes that make risk harder to detect. While most contractors are trying to operate responsibly, good intent is not the same as good control. When bad practice slips through, the consequences extend well beyond tax. They affect trust, safety, productivity, workforce welfare and fair competition across the sector.

This is why the reform should be viewed as an operational governance issue, not simply a tax compliance issue.

In construction, risk rarely sits in a single process. Labour moves quickly. Delivery pressure is constant. Commercial teams, site teams, payroll, procurement and compliance teams often work from different systems, with different data and different priorities. Risk emerges in the gaps. The real test is whether those moving parts give contractors a reliable and defensible view of what is happening across their workforce and supply chain.

HMRC’s guidance leaves little room for doubt. Businesses are expected to strengthen assurance practices, understand risk within their labour supply chains, know who is paying the workforce and how they are paid, reassess risk during a contract’s progress, and maintain visibility not just of direct suppliers, but of the chain below them. Contractors should now be asking whether their current processes are robust enough to meet that level of scrutiny.

The key question is no longer whether a subcontractor passed an initial check. It is whether the contractor can show continuous control over the workforce and the chain supporting it. Do they know who is on site, who engaged them, whether they have been

properly onboarded, whether credentials have been verified, and whether the hours being claimed match the reality of site activity? Can warning signs such as weak documentation, unusual payment requests, suspiciously low rates or excessive subcontracting layers be identified early enough to act?

In the immediate term, some businesses will see the CIS reform as an additional burden. Over time, however, it has the potential to improve standards in a much more meaningful way. It should reward companies that invest in transparency, consistent assurance and better record keeping. It should also make opaque labour models far less attractive, particularly where complexity is being used to reduce transparency and accountability.

There is also a commercial angle that should not be overlooked. Across the sector, customers are demanding greater confidence in workforce compliance, modern slavery controls, social value reporting and broader supply chain governance. In that environment, contractors that can demonstrate strong operational oversight will be better placed not only to respond to HMRC but also to meet client expectations and protect their reputation.

Technology has a role to play in that shift, but only where it strengthens control rather than simply digitising the process. What contractors need is timely, connected visibility across onboarding, verification, site access, attendance, timesheets and reporting, so that decisions are based on evidence, not assumption.

The more constructive view is that this is a necessary reset. It pushes the industry towards greater transparency, creates a stronger incentive to challenge subcontracting structures, and reinforces the fact that in construction, operational excellence and compliance discipline go hand in hand.

The companies that respond well will be the ones asking better questions, building stronger assurance into everyday operations, and making supply chain visibility part of how they run projects.

Robert Brent is CEO at construction workforce management solutions provider MSite.

SUPPORTING ARCHITECTS AND INSPIRING BESPOKE PROJECTS

Consort Architectural Hardware will unveil a unique combination of digital innovation and hands-on craftsmanship at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week.

The relationship between architectural design and hardware specification has traditionally been a fragmented one. Today, a greater number of projects require collaborative design tools, and professionals need innovation in this space. Consort Architectural Hardware aims to meet these modern architectural demands with the launch of its intelligent Revit integration software.

With its new Revit integration system, Consort is introducing a connected workflow between architectural models and door scheduling. The advanced digital platform enables architects to upload and analyse Revit models directly within the application, supporting an efficient dataled approach, where door data is interpreted, structured and prepared for hardware scheduling.

Through secure access and a purpose-built Revit plugin, users can establish direct communication

between their model and Consort’s platform. With a unique project ID, architects can initiate a structured data extraction process that captures valuable information including door parameters, attributes and key project information straight from the model. Once complete, both the architect and Consort’s team receive confirmation, ensuring transparency and design alignment from the outset.

Following analysis, the workflow can transition seamlessly into the technical stage. A mapping interface aligns Revit parameters with the internal scheduling structure, ensuring critical data - such as room locations, door types, performance requirements and dimensional attributes - is translated accurately. The system then generates a comprehensive door schedule, with minimal manual input required, significantly reducing the risk of errors in the process.

A standout feature of Consort’s new platform is its interactive visual interface, which includes linked 2D and 3D models. With a suite of visuals, users can navigate the project intuitively,

selecting doors within the schedule and instantly locating them within the model, or vice versa. This bi-directional functionality further enhances coordination, particularly on complex schemes, and allows for rapid validation of information. With the door schedule in place, estimators can prepare detailed hardware sets tailored to each door, using Consort’s product data to ensure consistency and compliance throughout. Once finalised, door schedules, specifications, updated parameters and BIM objects are exported back into the Revit model. Each door is also embedded with a hardware set reference

and a smart link, providing immediate access to detailed product information, imagery and technical documentation.

Consort is complementing this new digital innovation by showcasing its bespoke product capabilities and material expertise at Clerkenwell Design Week. In partnership with Material Source, Consort’s team of experts are inviting visitors to stand MSS7 between 19th - 21st May 2026, where they can explore products up close and take away samples of finishes and materials. Between metals, stone, leather and specialist finishes, complete freedom will be offered in material selection, with expanded finishing capabilities ensuring colour and surface quality align with project intent.

GOING BEYOND THE DEFAULT - SPECIAL FEATURE FOR MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK

“Going Beyond the Default” Sarah Bolton, CEO of the Lighthouse Charity on being authentic, fruit baskets and the importance of learning every day.

The Lighthouse Charity provides 24/7 free and confidential holistic emotional, physical and financial wellbeing support to the construction community in the UK and Ireland.

During Mental Health Awareness Week, Sarah Bolton, CEO of the Lighthouse Charity, offers her insight into the challenges of the construction industry, what’s working well and how we can all contribute to a positive mental health culture for the industry.

Setting the Scene

Construction can be tough – tight deadlines, long hours, physically demanding jobs and job uncertainty can all take their toll. Pressure, pace and resilience are often seen as strengths

within the sector, but these same characteristics can make it harder for people to reach out for support.

But last year, our charity saw a 17% increase in the number of families reaching out for help and we delivered an unprecedented £6.3m of charitable support. 59% of the support we delivered addressed an element of poor mental health and we funded over 8,700 counselling sessions. Those figures are being eclipsed again in 2026. In the first quarter of this year, we’ve seen a 25% increase in the number of families reaching out for support and a 44% increase in counselling sessions compared to the same time period last year.

A large proportion of our industry’s workforce are self employed and finishing trades. They’re at the end of the line, where the budget and timelines are squeezed, the pressure is on and they don’t have a network of support. Put all of that together and it’s a perfect storm.

You could say that all of this paints a poor picture, but actually, the increase in demand for our support shows that things are changing, people are beginning to feel more confident in seeking help and that we are extending the message of support to those that need it most.

And whilst we’re unable to control many of the external factors impacting our industry, what we can do is equip our workforce with the resources and soft skills to help them manage the challenges of daily life at work and home.

Encouraging

People to Reach Out for Support

We need to embody the concept that reaching out for help shows strength, not weakness. Our industry still struggles with this perception, but we’re working hard to change it. We need to normalise conversations around mental wellbeing and give people permission to say, ‘I need some help’. Poor mental health can affect anyone, so just because you’re the site manager, or you get paid a bit more, it doesn’t make you immune.

And encouraging open conversations comes from good leadership, through letting people know there’s no judgement. Leadership comes from every level - whether you’re a site labourer, the person on the gate, or a manager, positive mental health is everyone’s responsibility.

Making it Visible

One of the ways that Lighthouse supports this ethos is through the delivery of our #MakeItVisible initiative. Last year, our team visited 677 sites across the UK and Ireland.

The success of this initiative is the strength behind our team sharing their own lived experiences. Without fail, their personal stories encourage others to step forward for support. It’s about being authentic - it makes all the difference when someone who’s been in their shoes says, ‘I’ve been where you are, I completely understand and there is help available.’

A Psychological Safe Space

On a recent webinar where I was a panel member discussing positive mental health, someone commented, ‘It’s not just about fruit baskets in the break room’ and that really struck a chord with me. It’s not about ticking boxes. It’s about creating a psychologically safe environment where people feel able to share. Where they can see that it’s not just them that’s going through a tough time or experiencing problems- that’s where the real change is going to come from. And this needs to be constant –not just a one-off toolbox talk or site induction. You wouldn’t tell someone it’s okay to take off their high-vis jacket after a few weeks, so why would you stop creating a safe environment for people to talk?

Beyond the Default

How many times do we ask someone whether they are okay, but not really listen to the answer? Hi, how are you? Yeah, fine, you?’ It’s just our default response. But if we were all just to ask twice, especially when we think someone might be struggling, whether they’re quieter than usual, or you know they’re going through a difficult time outside of work. It’s such a simple thing to do and no one is expected to have all the answers or to be able to fix the problem. Just listening and signposting someone to support is enough, we’ll do the rest.

Never Too Early

And that leads me on to the importance of reaching out for help at an early stage. We are always able to help people, but so often they have already reached crisis point before reaching out for support. We want to ensure that they feel able and validated in reaching out to prevent issues escalating, no matter how small the problem is. For example, when they receive that first bill they can’t pay, we want them to contact us so that we can get ahead of the problem, to help reduce the stress and anxiety. We can get the interventions in place and understand what other issues there might be playing in the background. It’s about getting them on a sustainable pathway much earlier. We know that all elements of wellbeing are intrinsically linked, so even though someone might call us about a financial or physical health problem, undoubtedly, this will also be impacting on their emotional wellbeing too.

A Solution to Fit Their Journey

Taking that first step in seeking help can be tough and each person’s journey is unique, so we make it as easy as possible for people to reach

out for support. We’re real people getting to the heart of the problem and in every aspect of that, there’s no judgement, just someone ready to listen. Whilst some prefer to call us on the phone, others prefer to use our live web chat facility. We also have our self-support app and lighthouse beacons that can offer face to face support with likeminded people. Again, it’s about joining the dots, reducing the stigma, making sure that people can reach out in a variety of ways and then providing holistic and sustainable support that fits their journey.

Changing the Narrative

We really need to improve mental health literacy from the earliest opportunity, through school curriculums and on through apprenticeships and into the workplace. It’s imperative that we create a culture where people aren’t afraid to start a conversation about mental wellbeing and know about the support available to them.

I also believe that there’s room for improvement when it comes to managing mental health in our industry. I’d like to see a directive to make mental health first aid training mandatory, just like physical first aid. And it shouldn’t be a tick box exercise- mental health first aiders need to be relatable and approachable individuals who are adept and trained to spot the signs of someone struggling.

Always Learning

It’s always so positive to see a concerted effort by so many people and organisations during Mental Health Awareness Week. For us at Lighthouse, this is what we do every day. Every day makes a difference and we are always seeking new avenues and different methods to spread the message of support. Not everything works as you thought it might but I think it’s really important that we did the things that didn’t work too, because they lead us on to the things that do and that’s how we learn, isn’t it? Some of the things we did in the early days weren’t as polished as they are now, but we’re always looking to improve. That’s the same for improving mental health in our industry. One of our charity’s life coaches recently said to me that real change rarely comes from one big action, it comes from small choices and actions repeated over time. And that’s so right. We all have our part to play by listening beyond the default, asking twice, checking if okay really does mean okay and continuing to contribute to positive change in our amazing industry.

LOVELL EXPANDS WEST MIDLANDS PIPELINE WITH STAFFORDSHIRE LAND DEAL

LEADING partnerships developer Lovell has officially exchanged contracts for the acquisition of a prime residential site at Hoon Avenue, signalling a significant investment in the West Midlands’ housing market.

The exchange was initiated through an open-market process by Staffordshire County Council, underscoring a commitment to selffunded growth by Lovell as well as showcasing its ability to deliver essential housing outside of traditional local authority partnerships.

The Hoon Avenue site, which currently holds outline planning permission for up to 100 high-quality homes, is set to become a vibrant, mixed-tenure development.

The proposed plans by Lovell include a balanced community using a considered mix of open market and affordable housing options and a target of 25% section 106 provision for the local area.

Nicola Colley, head of land for Lovell in the Midlands, said: “Securing the Hoon Avenue site represents a strategic step for Lovell, using private investment to directly support the local authority’s housing targets and wider region’s needs. This project highlights our appetite for competitive land opportunities across the West Midlands as well as our growth plans in the market. “Lovell is proud to be taking a proactive lead in transforming this land into a thriving community to meet the demand for both private and affordable housing, while also supporting local job creation, education and training opportunities.”

While the site has been secured a residential outline planning consent, Lovell will now be moving forward with a detailed design phase including a pre-application meeting for planning, which has already been submitted to the local authority.

Lovell has a longstanding history of delivering high-quality homes across Staffordshire and the West Midlands. This acquisition follows the success of several key regional developments including Gladstone Rise in Stoke-on-Trent – a community of one to four-bedroom homes that has proven popular with local first-time buyers and families.

Lovell also recently secured planning approval for an additional 121 homes at The Orchards in Wombourne, demonstrating its continued investment in Staffordshire’s growth.

TRIMBLE LINKS SKETCHUP WITH ANTHROPIC’S CLAUDE- BRINGING NEW CONVERSATIONAL AI-POWERED CAPABILITIES TO 3D MODELING

Trusted, intuitive AI enhances design workflows, making it easier to move from creative concepts to 3D models

WESTMINSTER, Colo., April 28, 2026 -- Trimble (Nasdaq: TRMB) announced a specialized integration with Claude, the large language model and AI assistant from Anthropic, that makes it easier for Trimble® SketchUp® software users to create 3D models directly from conversational text or speech prompts.

The powerful new capabilities are enabled by a SketchUp Connector model context protocol (MCP) service that allows Claude to interact directly with SketchUp (.skp) files. The connectivity enhances existing design workflows and expands access to 3D modeling for people at any skill level.

Trimble SketchUp is a professional-grade 3D modeling software used widely in architecture, design, construction and other fields. This is the first Connector created by Trimble that connects the SketchUp design environment with other tools via the MCP framework.

Conversational 3D modeling

The SketchUp Connector integration with Claude lets users create 3D geometry, such as building massing models, landscapes or furniture by simply describing what they want. Plain-language inputs alongside reference images, sketches, photos, floor plans and dimensions that users upload can give Claude the context needed to understand the design goal. Claude builds the geometry in a cloud SketchUp session, verifying dimensions iteratively.

“The learning curve and time it takes for professionals to transfer a vision to a digital model has traditionally been the biggest barrier to 3D modeling,” said Chris Cronin, vice president and general manager of architecture and design solutions at Trimble. “Natural language prompts

and the power of AI make it easy for anyone to get started and excel, including inexperienced and non-traditional 3D design users, bringing us closer to our ‘3D for everyone’ goal.”

The specialized Claude integration for SketchUp is consistent with Trimble-wide initiatives to democratize advanced technology and make them available and accessible to a wider range of users, according to Cronin.

Additional 3D modeling advantages

In addition to allowing natural language prompts, the SketchUp Claude Connector tracks version history within a single chat, enabling users to rapidly navigate, troubleshoot and refine their 3D models. If a design is not quite accurate, users can describe necessary changes or paste screenshots from SketchUp directly into the chat to point out specific angles, proportions or elements that need adjustment.

When a model is completed, the Connector creates a 2D preview thumbnail and provides a direct download link to the .skp file. Users can instantly download, open and edit the file in any SketchUp modeler.

Users can also design and train Claude on core skills and unique workflows to complete repetitive tasks more quickly and efficiently.

Availability

Users can get started today by enabling Trimble SketchUp in Claude’s MCP directory connector settings. Accessing the Connector requires a Claude account and a Trimble ID for authentication. Users receive a free SketchUp entitlement that allows them to save up to 30 SketchUp models; after that, a paid entitlement is required. Resulting files can be opened in SketchUp for Web, Desktop, iPad or iPhone.

MORRO HANDS OVER FIRST HOMES AT NEW SANDWELL DEVELOPMENT

MIDLANDS developer Morro Partnerships

has reached a key milestone at its Swan Lane development in Sandwell, with the first homes now being handed over as the scheme progresses towards completion later this year. Located on a former gas works site in West Bromwich, the regeneration project is transforming a brownfield site into a modern, sustainable neighbourhood of 147 high-quality affordable homes, delivered in partnership with GreenSquareAccord (GSA).

The development is currently at the halfway stage and remains on track for completion before the end of the year, marking a significant step forward in the delivery of much-needed housing for the local area.

Alongside housing delivery, the project is already generating substantial community impact. To date, Swan Lane has achieved more than £305,000 in social value, exceeding initial expectations and demonstrating Morro Partnerships’ commitment to creating long-term benefits for the communities in which it operates. Last year, the development took home the social impact award at the Insider Media Midlands Residential Property Awards, highlighting the project’s positive impact on the local community.

Abdul Mozzamdar, head of social purpose at Morro Partnerships, said: “Reaching the stage where homes are now being handed over is a significant milestone for Swan Lane. It reflects the hard work of everyone involved in bringing this complex brownfield site forward and delivering high-quality homes for the community.

“What’s particularly important is that this progress is being matched by meaningful social value, supporting local people through apprenticeships, skills development, education and community initiatives. Swan Lane shows how regeneration projects can deliver not just homes, but long-term opportunity and impact for local communities.”

Social value activity at the scheme has been delivered across a range of targeted initiatives and responsible business practices. This includes supporting local talent through apprenticeships and training opportunities, with five new apprentice hires from within a 30-mile radius of the site, alongside additional T Level and higher-level apprenticeship provision.

The project has also supported local education and skills development, hosting 60 students for site visits and delivering engagement activity with schools and colleges. A total of 737 hours of

career mentoring and engagement have been provided, helping to inspire the next generation into construction careers.

Community collaboration has been a key focus, with Morro working alongside local organisations including Chapter House, a homelessness charity, through donations of furnishings, equipment and volunteering support to improve community spaces. Additional initiatives have included school donations, site engagement visits and contributions to local improvements. Morro’s commitment to sustainability is also reflected in the project’s environmental performance, with 100% of waste recycled and over 90 tonnes of hard-to-recycle waste diverted from landfill through specialist partnerships, alongside the reuse of materials on site.

The development recently welcomed the Mayor of the West Midlands on a high-profile site visit alongside key stakeholders, highlighting the importance of collaboration in delivering both housing and wider skills development and regional growth.

Carl Taylor, assistant director of new business at GSA, said: “We are delighted to have welcomed our first customers to Swan Lane. This brownfield site has been unlocked through partnership working, transforming disused industrial land into a thriving community of new homes.

“Our Swan Lane scheme meets a variety of local housing needs by providing 41 two- and 24 three-bedroom houses, along with 17 one- and 65 two-bedroom apartments.”

While Swan Lane is a flagship project, Morro continues to apply this approach across its wider portfolio. At Yardley Brook, a four-year, near 300home development in Birmingham, initiatives such as the Construction Gateway are helping local people gain skills and secure long-term employment in the construction industry. These projects underline Morro Partnerships’ ongoing commitment to delivering sustainable regeneration, supporting local communities, and creating lasting social value alongside high-quality homes.

RENDESCO SECURES £100 MILLION INVESTMENT FROM PIONEER POINT

PARTNERS TO ACCELERATE CLEAN HEAT NETWORK ROLLOUT

Rendesco Limited (“Rendesco” or the “Company”), the UK’s leading clean heat network developer and operator, announces a £100 million commitment from Pioneer Point Partners LLP (“Pioneer”), the sustainable infrastructure investment firm.

The investment marks a significant step in Rendesco’s development, enabling the Company to directly finance and own the heat networks it installs. This new business model allows housebuilders to access a fully funded, end-to-end clean heat solution with no upfront capital cost, while homeowners will benefit from low-carbon, efficient and affordable heating, protected from gas price volatility.

Rendesco works with leading UK residential developers, including Cala Homes and Telford Homes, and operates networks supplying clean heat and hot water to more than 10,000 homes. Rendesco owns the full delivery chain for its heat networks, from design and in-house geothermal drilling, through to in-home installation and ongoing operation. This end-to-end ownership dramatically reduces the cost of delivering clean heat; which, together with utility-style funding, enables housebuilders to install ground source heat networks at a lower cost than other lowcarbon solutions, and significantly reduce energy bills for the households served.

The announcement comes as the UK heating market reaches a critical inflection point. Heating currently accounts for approximately one third of UK carbon emissions, with domestic energy bills remaining high and volatile after years of dependence on imported gas. The Future Homes Standard, which requires all new-build homes to be fitted with low-carbon heating, is now reshaping the new build market, while the Warm Homes Plan is driving growing demand for retrofit. Together, these create the regulatory conditions for fast and sustained growth in the clean heat market. Rendesco is well-placed to capitalise on both.

Pioneer’s investment also reflects growing institutional conviction in the UK heat transition and builds on the firm’s established track record investing in sustainable infrastructure across Europe.

Exiting investors Clean Growth Fund, Aviva Ventures and Eurazeo have supported Rendesco through its growth phase and helped establish

KEY POINTS

• Pioneer Point Partners has acquired a majority stake in Rendesco, committing £100 million to scale the business

• Funding will facilitate up to £500 million of capex investment enabling Rendesco to finance and own its heat networks across new build and retrofit

• Capital will accelerate rollout as the Future Homes Standard comes into force and demand for clean heat accelerates

the Company as the UK’s leading independent clean heat operator. Copley Point, a significant equity investor in Rendesco since 2020, has partially exited in the transaction. It will continue to work closely with Rendesco and alongside Pioneer going forward. With Pioneer entering as its new majority shareholder, Rendesco is now positioned for its next stage of growth.

Alastair Murray, CEO and Founder of Rendesco, said:“The UK is experiencing the biggest change to how we heat our homes in a generation, and this is vital to protect homeowners from energy price volatility and end our reliance on foreign energy sources. Rendesco’s smart heat pump-led networks are the best solution for new build homes, and our retrofit solution can now deliver the same quality of service into the millions of existing homes that need to move off gas. Pioneer Point Partners brings a deep understanding of sustainable infrastructure and the conviction to back it at scale. It’s a vote of confidence in our team and our solution, and it gives us the firepower to serve many more homes as the Future Homes Standard reshapes the market.”

Rendesco was advised on the transaction by Lux Nova Partners.

SUNDERLAND CHARITY GIVEN NEW LEASE OF LIFE THANKS TO REGIONAL CONTRACTOR

Sunderland charity, Soundwaves Talking Newspaper, which supports people who are blind or visually impaired, has been given a new lease of life following a pro bono office refresh delivered with support from regional contractor, True North Construction.

Based at Toronto Road, Thorney Close, Sunderland, the work helped revitalise the charity’s workspace and improve facilities for volunteers and service users at no cost to the organisation.

Founded in 2019, True North Construction has earned a strong reputation for delivering bespoke residential builds, high-end refurbishments and certified Passivhaus homes. Its reputation for quality, sustainability and attention to detail has helped drive expansion into new commercial sectors, including hospitality, healthcare, education and workplace fit-outs.

The support was delivered as part of True North Construction’s commitment to giving back to the communities in which it works, including as principal contractor on the regeneration of 177 High Street West in Sunderland, part of Sunderland’s Heritage Action Zone.

Formerly known as The Tyre Shop, the historic building is being transformed into The Friends Meeting Place. The scheme includes the creation of a new ground-floor retail unit, alongside Quaker meeting rooms and office space across the upper floors.

The project is being delivered in phases, with the first phase now complete and the second scheduled for completion by the end of the summer.

As part of this approach, Natalie Henderson, director of compliance and social value at True North Construction, contacted Sunderland City Council for details of local organisations requiring support. Soundwaves Talking Newspaper stood out, having been on the council’s list for some time, and also held personal significance for Natalie and her husband Steven, construction director at True North, who have family members with partial sight.

Natalie Henderson, said: “We wanted to support something local while we were working in Sunderland and Soundwaves really stood out. It’s a fantastic service that makes a real difference to people’s lives and it’s also something that resonates with us personally. Being able to use our skills and resources to give the space a fresh start was incredibly rewarding for the whole team.”

Talking newspapers provide an essential service for people who are blind or visually impaired, enabling them to access news and information in audio format. Across the UK, hundreds of thousands of people benefit from the service, with around 1.5 million people living with sight loss or visual impairment who may otherwise find it difficult to read printed materials. For many users, it is a vital link to local news and community life.

The Soundwaves facility required significant practical improvement, with accumulated waste and underused rooms limiting its usability. True North Construction supported the charity by providing access to skips for waste removal. The team cleared all rooms and also redecorated the meeting room, repainting and refreshing the space to create a cleaner, more welcoming environment.

Philip Oliver, chairman of the Soundwaves Committee, said: “Natalie and her team were very professional and friendly. They worked around our recording schedule to minimise disruption to our programming. This support has made a huge difference to us. True North Construction has completely transformed our meeting room, creating a much more comfortable and practical environment for our volunteers. It will have a lasting impact on the way we operate and the service we provide.”

True North Construction’s work with Soundwaves highlights the role construction companies can play beyond project delivery, using their expertise to support local communities and deliver meaningful social value.

UPPER BROOK STREET STUDENT SCHEME REACHES STRUCTURAL MILESTONES

McLaren Construction Midlands and North has made significant progress at the £160m Upper Brook Street student accommodation development in Manchester.

Since McLaren’s appointment late last year, work has advanced with both tower cranes now fully operational and concrete cores for both buildings reaching full height.

The 23-storey UBS tower has progressed to level five floor slabs, and the nine-storey K block has reached level four. The project team has also completed the installation of the attenuation tank and established exemplary site accommodation nearby.

Current works are focused on progressing the concrete frame with floor slab construction ongoing across both buildings, and this phase will continue over the coming months with façade installation expected to commence in the summer.

Modern methods of construction remain central to the scheme, and the project incorporates a full concrete frame and fully unitised prefabricated façade panels.

The development is targeting high sustainability standards, including BREEAM Excellent and EPC A ratings, alongside a broader commitment to reducing environmental impact through efficient construction practices.

The project has set social value deliverables including creating local jobs, dedicating time supporting unemployed people back into work,

improving local skills including by hosting site visits, creating apprenticeships and supporting young people into work, 20% of construction value to be spent locally, and supporting local community projects to help increase green space and biodiversity. The team has started to develop this by working closely with local organisations, including initiatives in partnership with the Salvation Army, to provide work experience opportunities.

Engagement with community groups is also ongoing, with discussions underway to support a local Scout group and a proposed greenhouse project linked to a nearby residents’ initiative at Brunswick allotments.

Upper Brook Street will deliver 737 student beds across two buildings of 9 and 23 storeys, alongside a range of shared amenities including study areas, fitness facilities and social spaces. Once complete, the development will provide new public and community-focused facilities, contributing to the wider Oxford Road Corridor.

Luke Arnold, Regional Director at McLaren Construction Midlands and North, said: “Progress on Upper Brook Street has been excellent, with the team achieving key structural milestones in a short period of time. Reaching full height on both concrete cores is an achievement and is testament to the collaboration and expertise across the team. As we move forward, we remain focused on maintaining this momentum while continuing to deliver meaningful social value within the local community.”

Adding a new but complementary service to Wallace Whittle’s national client base, Petrie Buchanan will maintain its own brand identity, operating under the Wallace Whittle group following the acquisition.

Managing director at Wallace Whittle, Allan McGill, said “This is a strategic move to ensure our current and future clients have an increased level of efficiency and quality when it comes to accessing the services they need throughout a project. Petrie Buchanan’s experience and relationships with utilities companies and energy network providers will mean our clients can get the expertise they need quicker, reducing delays and improving cohesion across services – it will essentially be a one-stop-shop for our clients.”

Wallace Whittle has a long-term existing relationship with Petrie Buchanan making it a natural partnership.

All current employees and directors will be retained post-acquisition and cross-team collaboration will allow each company to obtain expertise from the other to support their projects. Integration plans include appointing champions at each Wallace Whittle office that will support cohesive working practices and upskilling.

Allan added: “We’ve been actively pursuing our growth plans, particularly in England, and through the acquisition both businesses will be growing together and progressing towards our goals. Petrie Buchanan has a fantastic existing reputation and we’re eager to start working closely with the team. Energy is the thorn in everyone’s side currently and with each project needing to consider it we’re looking to join up to ease those pressures.”

John Petrie, director at Petrie Buchanan, said: “After 25 years delivering expertise for our clients in the utilities sector, becoming part of the Wallace Whittle group is a significant milestone to support our growth and succession planning as well as theirs. I feel we’ve found the perfect culture fit for our team in joining forces with Wallace Whittle. I’m looking forward to working with the management team, as I retain my role as company lead, to create a stronger and more comprehensive offering for the marketplace. With demand high for our service offering, it’s a new and exciting challenge to maximise this with the backing of an established group.”

The acquisition follows Wallace Whittle’s recent milestone, celebrating five years since the management buyout from German giant TÜV SÜD. After 10 years under the brand, the buyout allowed Wallace Whittle to reclaim its roots while also becoming the catalyst for rapid acceleration of the partner-led consultancy. Future acquisitions will form part of Wallace Whittle’s growth plans.

WINVIC LAUNCHES LANDMARK NET ZERO WHITEPAPER AT UKREIIF

URGING INDUSTRY-WIDE REGULATORY ALIGNMENT

Winvic Construction Ltd has officially launched a major new ESG whitepaper at UKREiiF 2026, calling for stronger regulatory alignment to support the delivery of net zero carbon aligned buildings across the UK built environment.

Published in conjunction with the Westminster body, The Policy Liaison Group (PLG) on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), the whitepaper – From Commitment to Compliance: Why the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard Needs Regulatory Backing – argues that the industry is now ready to move beyond ambition towards measurable, verified operational performance, but requires policy and regulatory support to enable consistent adoption at scale.

The paper explores the opportunities and challenges surrounding the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (UKNZCBS), which launched earlier this year following extensive industry collaboration.

Drawing on insights from a Westminster roundtable and interviews with representatives across development, investment, construction, planning, sustainability and policy makers the report sets out practical recommendations for government, industry and investors to accelerate delivery.

Contributors and participants include the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC), Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Building Research Establishment (BRE), Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), BWB Consulting, Firethorn Trust, Panattoni, Ridge and Partners, Royal London Asset Management, UMC Architects, Wordsworth Excavations, Lord Gary Porter CBE and Lancaster City Council.

The whitepaper identifies regulatory alignment as the single greatest enabler of market-wide adoption, highlighting that the barriers to net zero delivery are no longer primarily technical.

Key recommendations include embedding the UKNZCBS into national planning and regulatory frameworks, mandating operational performance verification, aligning financial mechanisms with verified carbon outcomes, and improving consistency across ESG and carbon reporting standards.

The publication was formally launched during UKREiiF at the ‘Winvic and Partners Pavilion’, where industry leaders gathered to discuss

the future of net zero policy, delivery and accountability across the built environment.

The launch forms part of Winvic’s wider presence at UKREiiF during its milestone 25th year in business. Alongside the whitepaper launch, the contractor is hosting a programme of panel discussions and collaborative sessions focused on sustainability, planning reform, social value, industrial and logistics development, data centres and build-to-rent.

Arun Thaneja, Technical Services and Sustainability Director at Winvic, said: “The publication of this whitepaper marks a defining moment for the built environment sector. With the launch of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, the industry now has a credible and consistent framework to measure real operational performance, but turning ambition into measurable impact at scale will require far greater alignment across policy, regulation and delivery.

“Developed through collaboration with organisations from across the built environment, the whitepaper sets out both the significant opportunities ahead and the critical barriers that we must still overcome. The sector has shown it is ready to move beyond aspiration and into accountability and our hope is that these recommendations will help accelerate the next phase of practical, measurable and scalable net zero delivery across the UK.”

NELSONS NAVIGATES COMPLEX MULTI-PARTY DEAL TO UNLOCK KEY LEICESTER REGENERATION SITE

LEADING East Midlands law firm Nelsons has successfully advised Leicester City Council (LCC) on the completion of a sophisticated, multi-stage commercial property transactionsecuring a pivotal site for the city’s regeneration under intense time pressure.

This completion marks a major milestone in the regeneration of the Midland Street area, to achieving the ultimate vision of delivering a 20,000sq.m office-led commercial complex.

With a hard deadline of the government’s March financial year-end, Nelsons executed a series of interconnected legal movements in just six weeks.

This involved managing a strategic land swap with an external company to consolidate the site, followed by an onward sale to Homes England to trigger essential public funding.

The deal is a strategic win for the city, securing one of only two allocated office sites and unlocking government funding for critical public realm improvements. Work can now begin to create a seamless pedestrian link between Leicester Railway Station and the Cultural Quarter, helping to revitalise underutilised land and boost city-wide accessibility.

James Coningsby, partner and commercial property solicitor who has led the transaction,

said: “This was a particularly intricate deal involving multiple stakeholders and a layered structure of exchanges and leasebacks. Navigating these complexities within a strict timeline required a proactive and pragmatic approach. Working with Homes England and private entities also required a significant collaboration to ensure the council’s long-term regeneration goals were protected.

“The council’s vision for the Midland Street area is now one step closer to reality, and we are proud to have provided the legal framework to bring this complex piece of the puzzle together.”

Nelsons was initially appointed by LCC in late 2024 for a separate Levelling Up scheme. Following that achievement and a successful tender exercise, Brendan McGarry, programme manager at LCC, appointed the firm in to lead on this more complex land swap in early 2025.

Speaking about the Midland Street deal, Brendan McGarry said: “Securing this site was essential. We needed to hold the land to bid for the investment, and this deal enables our planning consent to push forward. Nelsons’ ability to handle the land swap, sale, and lease simultaneously was impressive. The team was approachable and proactive throughout a very difficult six-week period, providing the great response times we needed to get this over the line. I am very impressed by James’ work on this project and grateful for his expertise to closing this deal.”

KNOTWEED & INVASIVE PLANTS REMOVAL SERVICES

Construction

and Development: The perils of misidentifying or ignoring knotweed

For construction, groundworks and civil engineering projects, the most expensive knotweed outcomes often arise not from the plant itself, but from mistakes at the identification and early due-diligence stage.

Misidentifying, missing it during seasonal dieback or ignoring even a single suspected knotweed stand can create programme and commercial risk.

If discovered mid-project, contractors will need to stop and redesign groundworks, segregate materials, and bring in specialist support, all of which can cause delays and cost escalation.

Our national specialist services are geared to help avoid these pitfalls.

» Rapid response free plant identification.

» Site survey, with comprehensive report and Knotweed Management Plan.

» Treatment programme tailored to the site.

» Range of excavation and removal or more sustainable leave on site options.

» Site supervision watching brief.

» ALL-IN-ONE Multi-Contaminant Removal of invasive plants and asbestos in soils at the same time.

» Over 1,000 5* reviews.

» Trusted by over 8,000 long-term UK clients

TRANSFORM SITE COORDINATION WITH ONE SIMPLE APP

Every contractor knows the feeling: another day on site, another round of missed messages, late deliveries, unclear priorities, and “I thought they were doing that” conversations. Programme meetings drag on, whiteboards are out of date the moment you walk away, and by 10am your site looks very different to what was agreed at 8am.

Now imagine the opposite: Imagine opening one simple app each morning and seeing, at a glance:

• What every subcontractor plans to do today

• Who is responsible for each key activity

• Which cranes, deliveries and access routes they need

• What might impede progress before it actually does

That’s exactly what the Project Management & Safety Coordination App delivers: practical, field level coordination focused on what will happen today, not what went wrong yesterday.

Built For Contractors, Not IT Departments

This isn’t another bloated project platform you need a week’s training to understand. It’s a lean, easy to use tool designed around the way sites actually work.

Setup is simple. The main contractor receives login details, signs in as “Contractor” and adds their subcontractors in seconds. From there, each subcontractor is assigned to the relevant project via a straightforward dropdown menu. No complex permissions, no long configuration – just select the project, pick the subcontractor, click “Assign Project” and you’re live.

Each subcontractor supervisor then receives an automatic email with their login details. They download the app, sign in as “Subcontractor” using the dropdown menu, and from that point on they’re part of your coordinated daily planning process.

Daily Planning, Done Properly

The heart of the app is the daily report – fast to complete, powerful in what it delivers.

Each morning (for example, by 8am – you decide the deadline), every subcontractor opens the app and in a couple of minutes they confirm:

• What work they will be doing today

• Where they will be on site

• Any constraints, interfaces or safety considerations

• Crane needs, deliveries, and key resources

They can add photos straight from the camera or from their gallery – ideal for highlighting access issues, site conditions, or particular coordination points.

Once they hit “Review and Submit,” the information flows instantly to the contractor’s dashboard. No chasing, no paper forms, no wondering who’s doing what. You’ve got a live, up to date picture of your site, driven directly by the people doing the work.

True Site Wide Visibility

The app doesn’t just collect information – it shares it where it matters.

Subcontractors can see what other trades are doing that day simply by tapping the tabs along the top of the home screen:

• The Subcontractor tab shows what other contractors are working on and where.

• The Crane tab shows crane usage: times, locations, what is being lifted.

• The Delivery tab shows inbound deliveries by time, gate and description.

This alone transforms coordination. Instead of discovering a clash when a truck is blocking the gate or a crane is already lifting for someone else, teams can plan around each other in real time. Everyone is working from the same, current information.

• ISO 9001 (Quality Management Systems)

• ISO 14001 (Environmental Management)

• ISO 27001 (Information and Data Security)

A Smarter Contractor Dashboard

On the contractor side, the dashboard becomes your live whiteboard.

As each subcontractor submits their daily report, the dashboard automatically populates. You can add your own notes – ideal for client instructions, safety points, or site wide constraints. Everything feeds into a clean, time stamped project record. Want to know what happened last week / month / 6 months ago? Just select the date and press “Apply.” In seconds you can see the full picture for that date – who was on site, what they were doing, what was lifted, what was delivered.

Powerful Reporting At The Click Of A Button

The app turns your live data into professional reports without you lifting a pen.

With one tap on Export PDF, you generate a polished daily report (shown below) ready for your whiteboard meeting or coordination call. Connect your laptop to a screen and you’ve got an instant visual of the day’s plan and activities. Prefer spreadsheets? Hit Export CSV and you’ve got the data ready for analysis, claims support, or programme reviews.

Need to drill into the detail? Choose the contractor’s report you wish to view, and then tap “View Report” to see the full submission from each subcontractor. If you need to follow up, a built in messaging function lets you contact them directly from the report screen. (Messages are currently one way from contractor to subcontractor, with two way messaging in development.)

Controlled Access For Your Entire Team

Construction is a team game, and so is this app. The dashboards can be viewed on site or from your company offices no matter where in the world they are.

You can easily give controlled access to directors, contracts managers, project managers, QSs and other key stakeholders by adding them as Stakeholders. When they sign in through the Stakeholder tab, they see the same clear, structured project view – without interfering with the contractor/subcontractor workflow.

The Result: Fewer Surprises, Smoother Sites

The Project Management & Safety Coordination App doesn’t try to replace your entire project management system. It focuses on the critical daily coordination that makes or breaks site performance:

• Clear, early visibility of who is doing what, where and when

• Better use of shared resources like cranes and gates

• Fewer clashes, delays and last minute scrambles

• A complete daily record for meetings, claims and compliance

• Real time collaboration between contractor, subcontractors and stakeholders

If you’re tired of firefighting your way through every day on site, this is a simple, effective way to take back control. Turn your whiteboard into a live, shared digital view of your project – and keep your teams one step ahead, every single day.
