ON BEHALF OF THE ARTISTS, STAFF AND BOARD OF DIRECTORS, WE ARE DELIGHTED TO SHARE THIS FIRST SEASON OF EXTRAORDINARY PROGRAMMING IN THE NEW DANCE PLACE. WITH THE HELP OF SO MANY, OUR BELOVED FACILITY HAS BEEN TOTALLY REFURBISHED, UPGRADED AND EXPANDED. OUR RENEWED HOME WILL ALLOW US TO SERVE ARTISTS, AUDIENCES AND STUDENTS BETTER THAN EVER BEFORE. Our newly created Hyman M. Perlo Studio will provide an artistic space for performers to warm up, choreographers to make new work, dancers to rehearse and children to take more classes. We’re pleased to announce this season’s artists, all with compelling ideas and passionate feelings. Our expanded series includes five international companies (from Morocco and two groups each from Brazil and Cuba), as well as touring artists from all across the United States (Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, NYC and more) and of course provides home seasons for some of DC’s finest. This season we will be co-commissioning new works by Cynthia Oliver and Daniel Phoenix Singh. In addition to our renovated building, we continue to present Art on 8th performances, workshops and exhibitions just up the street at Monroe St. Market. In partnership with the Bozzuto Group, Art on 8th features free music on Thursdays and dance on Fridays that gets you up on your feet from May - September. Year-round you can BE CREATIVE with Saturday arts & crafts workshops at our gallery, Studio 21. Become an art collector and join us for gallery openings that feature emerging and accomplished visual artists from DC and New York. Intense, image-rich movement by choreographer-dancer Hind Benali traces the personal interiors and public exteriors of Moroccan life in IDENTITY. “At the forefront of the contemporary dance scene in Morocco” (Morocco: Globalization and its Consequences), Benali, fellow dancer Soufiane Karim and composer-musician Mohcine Imraharn document the crossroads of past and present, Africa and Europe. Combining movement with text, live music and unique audience participation, he delves into questions of “where are we from?” and “where are we now?” in real time. Celebrating the heritage of Sri Lanka, SerendibDance takes the audience into an ancient world of intricate dance movements, drum rhythms and elaborate costumes. A Single Cycle of the Sun showcases through folk dance the life of a village from sunrise to sunset, complete with simple joys and a community bound together through poetry, folk songs, dance and prayer.

Sita, Gentle Warrior, a dynamic interpretation of the epic work known all over Asia as the Ramayana, invites audiences to experience the vitality of a 2000-year-old work brought into the new millennium. Since 2004, Rueda All Stars has developed an extensive repertoire of Cuban ballroom dances under the direction of Jorge Luna Roque, including Rueda de Casino, Mambo, Rumba and more. Hailed as one of the elite drummers of Cuba, Yissy Garcia offers a fresh interpretation of young trends in jazz from the Island by combining her compositions with electronic beats. The musical outcome ranges from compositions of great aesthetic simplicity to complex harmonies and rhythms, all the while expressing a deep Cuban identity. Made possible through The National Performance Network’s Performing Americas Program.

Choreographer Zoe Scofield and video artist Juniper Shuey are the creative team behind zoe | juniper, a company acclaimed for its “visual wizardry” and “brilliant dance” (Seattle Times). In BeginAgain, the duo explores new technological methods for triggering their raw tableaux of movement and stage design as a means of examining startling new ways to see and be seen.
