Parks and Community...

Parks support community engagement by providing residents with a venue for participation in and attachment to their communities. They also provide a sense of place and offer essential life-enhancing qualities that aid community and individual well-being.

Carver Recreation Center is a prime example of how parks and communities enhance the quality of life for our citizens. Just this month community churches, volunteers, and staff members in the Carver community came together to provide the annual free Thanksgiving meal. There was laughter, community pride, social interaction, and a sense of family very evident during the event. The photo’s below just scratch the surface of what Carver Recreation Center has meant to the generations of people who live in the Carver community.

Administration Highlights ~ 

Ribbons were cut on two new additions to the park system. The Mountain Bike Trail at Winged Deer Park opened on October 27; the one-mile trail is just the start of additional mileage expected by spring. The trail is a partnership between the Johnson City Parks and Recreation and SORBA.



The new bridge at Jacob’s Nature Park at Sinking Creek was unveiled on November 4.



The 2016 Wall of Fame Inductees were introduced to the media on November 7 at Winged Deer Park during the media luncheon. This year’s inductees are Randy Collins, Frank Leroy Knisley, and Carl Williams.

Athletics Division Highlights

~



Youth and adult basketball concluded registrations this month. There are 70 youth teams and 20 adult teams registered. Games will begin the week of December 5.



The Athletic Division was presented with an award from the Tri-Cities Senior Softball League for their continued support of the league.

Park Services Division Highlights ~ 

Tobacco Free Tennessee benches have been installed at Kiwanis Park, Lions Park, and Willow Springs Park.



Set-up for Turkey Trot at Cardinal Park took place the week prior to Thanksgiving Day.



New sod was installed on the Winged Deer Park soccer field.

Memorial Park Community Center ~ 

The Mother and Son Dinner and a Movie event had 50 in attendance. Ole’ Guacamoles and Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steak burgers sponsored the event.



Start Smart Basketball started this month with 30 enrolled in the program.

Recreation Services Division ~ 

Students from ETSU’s Service Learning Plunge pitched in to help plant some native species in Jacob’s Nature Park at Sinking Creek. The plants will offer fruit, nectar, seeds, and shelter to the park’s animal and insect inhabitants.



Princeton Arts Center’s Décor Basket program was a hit with the participants on November 18.



The youth art program titled Art On! created a stained glass look art project using toilet paper rolls and paint.
