Bridging the Gap ...

The plans are drawn, and the work has begun on the 10-foot wide handicap accessible footbridge at Jacob’s Nature Park at Sinking Creek. In addition, necessary supports are being put in place to complete the bridge.

On Monday, August 15, a crew from the Tennessee Department of Correction’s Carter County Work Camp arrived to begin construction of the bridge decking and railing across Sinking Creek. The crew will be working along side parks and recreation crew members weekdays until the work is completed.

The bridge, when complete, will provide easier access for park visitors to go from the wetlands half of the park to its wooded slopes and the trails that meander through them … bridging the gap!

Administration Highlights ~ 

The Ground Breaking for the Boundless Playground at Rotary Park took place on August 9.



Two new Park Advisory Board members will be sworn in at the September meeting. The new members are Dr. Robert Clemons and Carrie Fleenor.

James Smith and Matthew Osborne will roll off the board this month.

NOTICE Deadline to sign up for youth basketball October 23.

Adult Basketball Deadline November 15.

Athletics Division Highlights

Fall adult softball started with a record 52 teams signed up in three divisions.



Fall youth soccer has 1,150 youth registered for this season.

Park Services Division Highlights ~  The bridge at Jacob’s Nature Park is under construction with park and recreation crews being assisted by the Tennessee Department of Correction’s Carter County Work Camp.  Infield irrigation on field #5 at Winged Deer Park has been completed.  Lights at Kermit Tipton Stadium have been installed by Armature and Electric Co., Inc. out of Kingsport, Tennessee.

Memorial Park Community Center ~ 

The 4th Annual Dive, Ride, and Stride Kids Triathlon was held on Saturday, August 20. One hundred and eighteen youth ages 6 -12 years showed off their athletic skills in the water, on their bike, and on foot during this year’s event. Chip timing was added to the event this year. The event ran smooth even with the rain.

Recreation Services Division ~  Homeschool art classes at Princeton Art Center began on August 4 with 14 students enrolled. Students learned about journals and then made their own to take home.  A new Yoga class at Princeton will begin on September 6 for ages 10 and older. Student are now enrolling in the class.  Buffalo Mountain Park was the site for a Salamander hike on Saturday, August 20 with 24 hikers in search of the illusive

Our Kudos Corner this month goes to a Transit employee, Bradley Osborne, for his innovative ideas for Poke’man in the parks program. The program sparked interest from California and Indiana Parks and Recreation Departments who were going to try a similar program in their areas.
