JCSC Foundation News You may have already received a letter from the Johnson City Senior Foundation regarding their Spring Fund Drive. The Foundation partners with Senior Services to fund additional programs and services for senior adults. Through the generosity of donors such as you, the Foundation funds fellowships to provide opportunities for low-income seniors to participate in activities at the Senior Center at greatly reduced fees; supplies Christmas boxes to homebound elderly in our local community; provides financial support for a partnership with Mountain States Foundation to continue services of the Community Health Activities Coordinator to provide free health information and screenings for seniors; provides matching funds for an ABC grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission; and provides charter buses for day trips.

The Johnson City Senior Center Foundation is a 501Š(3) non-profit corporation formed for the specific purpose of accepting charitable gifts and donations and engaging in fundraising activities exclusively in support of Senior Services of the City of Johnson City. Jeanne Cope – The Joyful Gardener Grow a Pot of Healthy Veggies Good Morning Gardeners: Times they are a’ changing and if we don’t change too, we may miss the boat! Groceries cost much more than they used to, and those for sale have chemicals that are poison to humans. Genetically Modified Organisms are now part of the food we buy to eat, especially processed foods.

What can we do now? Buy a very large, (not clay), pot to sit in the sun near your door and grow something you like to eat. Grow any variety of beans, kale, green onions, radishes or if the weather is cool, lettuce. A combination of veggies fills a large pot.

Fill your pot with enriched garden soil, add organic, non-GMO seeds, and watch the veggies grow. Harvest kale by the leaf, with scissors.

Allow the roots to continue growing more leaves.

When one plant is finished, plant another. Hand pick bugs, and flip them into hot water. No poison needed, ever. Know what you eat. Be healthy!

Brain Games Thursdays at 4:00p Cost: Free Calling All Trivia Buffs! We will be starting our hunt for the sharpest senior minds to compete and represent our center at the Brain Games in August.

This will be our 4th year participating. Starting in June we will have trivia competitions to find our best team. July will be spent in training our team for competition. Our goal will be to make it to state competition. This event is open to anyone who is 50+.

Please register by July 11th Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site & Museum of Ancient Brick Friday, July 21 Leave MPCC at 10am; return approx. 1p • Cost: $5 per person The Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site tells the rich story of the history of Northeast Tennessee and of the several families that lived here. The site includes 45 acres, eleven historic buildings, the Tipton/Gifford/Simerly cemetery, a limestone cave, a natural spring, a buffalo trace, a nature trail, and a Visitor Center. The Visitor Center contains a permanent exhibit, museum store, educational spaces, a library, and archives. Every brick tells a story — the late Basil Saffer knew that better than most. As curator of the General Shale Museum of Ancient Brick, Saffer spent decades going on brick-hunting expeditions in dozens of countries throughout the world and bringing his finds back to Johnson City, Tennessee, to be admired by visitors to the company’s headquarters. Saffer, a former British merchant sailor, self-taught archaeologist and General Shale’s marketing director, once said, “To me, these are not just bricks — they are pieces of history.” Saffer passed away in 2011, but the legacy he established at General Shale’s headquarters in Johnson City lives on. Roughly 9,000 square feet are dedicated to exhibits and 9,000 square

feet to collections storage and research. Today, the 267-seat auditorium continues to be used for UT classes and museum programs. More than 1.4 million visitors have enjoyed programs and exhibits, and thousands of UT undergraduates have attended classes there. Its nationally significant archaeological, paleoethnobotanical, and malacological collections have been the sources of myriad theses, dissertations, journal articles, and monographs. The East Tennessee Historical Society was established in 1834 as the East Tennessee Historical and Antiquarian Society. The guiding spirit behind the founding was Dr. J.G.M. Ramsey, son of a pioneer family, the author of one of the state’s first histories, and also a founder of the Tennessee Historical Society. Since 1924 ETHS has been an adjunct to and headquartered with the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection of the Knox County Public Library. The two operate as a private/public partnership to preserve and share the history of East Tennessee. The bus will stop for lunch downtown to eat on your own!

Health Information for July Muscle /leg cramps cause sleep disturbances for many people. Do you have muscle or legs cramps and wonder why you have them and how to get rid of them? The following article will answer these questions and more: What are muscle cramps?

A muscle cramp is a strong painful contraction or tightening of a muscle that comes on suddenly and lasts from a few seconds to several minutes. It often occurs in the legs. A muscle cramp is called a charley horse.

Nighttime cramps are usually sudden spasms, or tightening of calf muscles. The muscle cramps can sometime happen in the thigh or the foot. They often occur just as you are falling asleep or waking up.

What causes muscle cramps?

The cause of muscle cramps is unknown. Muscle cramps maybe brought on by many conditions or activities, such as: exercising, injury or overuse of muscles, pregnancy, exposure to cold temperatures, especially cold water. Other medical conditions such as blood flow problems (Peripheral arterial disease), kidney disease, thyroid disease, and multiple sclerosis. More possible causes are standing on hard surfaces for a long time, or sitting a long time or putting your legs in awkward positions while you sleep. Not having enough potassium, calcium and other minerals in your blood is another cause of leg cramps. Being dehydrated, which means your body has lost too much fluid can cause cramps or taking certain medicines, such as antipsychotics, birth control pills, diuretics, statins and steroids.

How can you stop a muscle cramp when it happens?

You may need to try several different ways to stop a muscle cramp before you find one that works for you. Here are some things to try: stretch and

massage the muscle, take a warm shower or bath to relax the muscles. A heating pad placed on the muscle may help. Try using an ice or cold pack and always keep a cloth between your skin and the pack. Take over the counter pain medicine, such as Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or Naproxen (Aleve). Be safe with medicines. Read and follow all instructions on the label. If your doctor prescribes a medicine for muscle cramps, take them exactly as prescribed.

Drink plenty of fluids. Sports drinks such as Gatorade will often help leg cramps. .

Here are some things you can try for a leg cramp: Walk or jiggle your leg. Stretch your calf muscle.

You can do this stretch while you sit or stand.

While sitting straighten your leg and flex your foot up toward your knee and it may help to roll place a rolled towel under the ball of your foot and, while holding the towel on both ends, gently pull the towel toward you while keeping your knee straight. While standing about 2 feet from wall, lean forward against the wall. Keep the knee of the affected leg straight and the heel on the ground.

Do this while you bend the other leg.

If you think a medicine is causing leg cramps: before you take another dose, call the doctor who prescribed the medicine, the medicine may need to be changed or stopped, or the dose adjusted.

How can you prevent a muscle cramp?

Drink plenty of water and other fluids, enough so that your urine is light yellow or clear like water.

Limit or avoid alcohol. Make sure you are eating foods that are rich in calcium, potassium and magnesium. Ride a stationary bicycle to condition and stretch your muscles. Stretch your muscles every day, especially before and after exercise and at bedtime. Gradually increase the amount of exercise you do each week. Take a multivitamin supplement.

What if cramps keep coming back?

If muscle cramps keep coming back, talk with your doctor who can prescribe medication to ease your discomfort. If this does not work, this maybe a sign of another problem, such as restless leg syndrome.

Further work up maybe needed.

Grandparents Corner Kids Triathlon August 19 Join us for the 5th Annual Dive Ride and Stride Kid’s Triathlon! This is a great way to introduce your children to the triathlon world at a young age! Children will participate in an age appropriate swim, bike, and run during this event.

Payments for the Ark Encounter/Creation Museum trip are due by July 7. Some fascinating facts about the Ark: The Ark is approximately 510 feet long – big enough that three space shuttles, nose to tail, could sit on the Ark’s roof. The roof of the Ark is more than 50 feet from the ground – higher than a modern fourstory house. The Ark has the same storage capacity as about 450 standard semitrailers. Ark Encounter is an all-wood life-size Noah’s Ark in northern Kentucky built to the dimensions provided in the Bible. Educational exhibits and the Ararat Ridge Zoo with exotic live animals from around the world plus incredibly lifelike sculpted animals, make this an amazing place to visit. Your trip includes admissions to both attractions, lunch at the Ark and a dinner at Golden Corral, hotel accommodations, and a comfortable motor coach.

Payments for Washington DC are due by August 8. Final payments for the Miami/ Key West trip are due by September 4.

Classical Creations Instructor: Ed Puhr Cost: $15 for the series Thursday July 6, 13 & 20 10a – 1p Oil painters, has it crossed your creative minds how the Renaissance painters did their ‘thing ‘ in painting.

If you have an explorative spirit, come and learn the basics of how classical painters did it. The course is meant for the intermediate and upper levels of oil painters who are familiar with the basics, such as color, mixing, mediums and the general dynamics of sketching. Bring your supplies - oil paints, brushes, mediums, and an easel. Come prepared with a willing spirit to explore the wonderful techniques of painters such as Rembrandt, Caravaggio, or whoever your favorite Renaissance painter is. Interact with other lovers of oil painting and be the painter you are meant to be. The class is 3 hours long, please be prompt! Also bring a 16” x 20” canvas for your painting and some gesso to initially apply, and a piece of fine sandpaper. Please pre-register and pay by Monday July 3rd.

Double Trouble Fridays, 8:30-9:30a Cost: $2 Instructor: Lauren Fowler This circuit workout uses a variety of formats to keep you motivated while improving your overall fitness. By training with free-weights, resistance-bands, and bodyweight this workout will give you an exciting range of strengthening, stretching, balance, and core exercises.

This class will also incorporate the use of MPCC’s new Eye Play system. Appropriate for all fitness levels.

Brain-a-Cise Thursdays, 4:00pm • Cost: Free Your brain needs exercise just as much as your body.

Come join this group for different brain stimulating activities.

Keep It Moving A supervised exercise program for individuals who have finished Cardiac Rehab, Physical Therapy or been told by your physician that you need to exercise but don’t know how. This program serves as the next step in your progression in establishing a safe, independent exercise program. This program requires a referral from a medical professional. This is an ideal program for the individual who is facing total joint replacement both before surgery and after finishing post-surgical physical therapy. Go for a hike. Gather your friends and plan a day of fun and fitness at a local, state, or national park. Pack a lunch, plenty of water, and your camera.

Team sports. Recreational leagues are available for men and women of all ages and abilities. You’ll get together for practices and games and may even travel to tournaments. Check with your local parks and recreation department or search for softball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, or tennis leagues online.

Join or start a walking group. Whether it’s ladies-only, gents-only, or a mixed group, let the conversation flow as you rack up the steps and move toward better health. Walk around the neighborhood, at the mall, or at a park. Take turns leading the walk, and encourage each member to map out a different course for variety. If time allows, enjoy a hot or cool beverage together after your walk.

Put on your dancing shoes. Even if you’ve never danced a step in your life, it’s never too late to learn how. Learning how to swing, tango, rhumba, or do the Hustle is fun, energizing, and a great way to sneak in some exercise. Some communities offer dance clubs where members meet regularly to learn new steps and practice together.

Join a group fitness class. Invite your friends to sign up for an exercise class together. There’s an endless variety of formats to choose from: water aerobics, yoga, Pilates, martial arts, Zumba®, step, cardio kickboxing, cycling, boot camp, and more. You’re sure to find something that makes you sweat and laugh.

Consider small-group personal training. Working with a certified personal trainer can help you break through fitness plateaus and reach new levels of health and fitness. Small-group training sessions are more fun and often less costly than one-on-one sessions. Look for a certified personal trainer who offers group sessions, and invite a friend or two to join you.

Enjoy seasonal activities. Make fitness a year-round habit by sharing fall, winter, spring, and summer activities. Resolve to try new sports together and find some new favorites. From fishing and camping to snowshoeing and sailing, if you maintain an open mind and an adventurous spirit, you’ll never run out of ideas for fun and fitness.

Get out of town. Take an active vacation together and enjoy walking tours, bike tours, kayaking, or golf. Go on a picture safari, explore the bell towers of medieval cathedrals, tour museums and historical sites, and have a ball.
