In this program you will learn how to: Be Aware, Plan, Prepare, and Connect with Community. Learn how to prepare for an emergency, organize an emergency kit, make a plan and more.

Participants should bring a family member, caregiver, close friend or other person who cares about you. You should bring important information about yourself to complete your emergency plan. This includes personal identification, emergency contacts, medications lists, doctors, insurance information, etc. Door prize give away. Please pre register.

Learn how to have productive discussions addressing retirement, one’s quality of life, wishes, organizing financial and legal papers, planning ahead so everyone is on the same page and more. Beginning Sign Language Instructor: Carol Harmon Mondays, May 9, 16, 23, 6-7:30p Cost: $5 a class Signing is a useful skill that can open up for you a new world of relationships and understanding. Learning sign can enable you to communicate using your hands and facial expressions with people ranging in age from babies to adults. Plus, it is a great brain stimulation! American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge Tuesday, June 7 leave MPCC at 8:00a, return approx. 5:00p • Cost: $10 Have you read the book “Girls of Atomic City” or curious about the history that Oak Ridge played in the Manhattan Project and atomic power? Then join us for a trip to this fascinating and very entertaining museum. The museum opened in 1949 in an old wartime cafeteria. It was originally named the American Museum of Atomic Energy. Its guided tours took visitors through the peaceful uses of atomic energy.

The present facility, opened in 1975, continues to provide the general public with energy information.

FIT to Go Travel Club

The travel club will not meet in May, but we encourage you to sign up for the Grandma Gatewood experience on Tuesday, May 3, starting at 5:00 p.m. You can hear her story Grandma Gatewood: Ohio’s Legendary Hiker, as told by Bette Lou Higgins, followed by dinner and local Appalachian Trail lore with Johnny Molloy. The evening will conclude with the presentation of the documentary Trail Magic: The Grandma Gatewood Story (Produced by Eden Valley Enterprises and FilmAffects). Cost is $10 per person; seating is limited. Trail Magic: The Grandma Gatewood Story was made possible, in part, by a grant from the Ohio Historical Society’s History Fund. The History Fund is supported exclusively by voluntary donations of Ohio income tax refunds and designated gifts to the Ohio Historical Society. www.ohiohistory.org/historyfund. The story tells the fascinating journey of Grandma Gatewood, who, at the of 67, was the first woman to hike the complete distance of the Appalachian Trail. This will be an entertaining evening – you don’t want to miss it!

The next monthly meeting of the FIT to Go travel club will be Thursday, June 2 at 5:30 p.m. We will offer a cookout in the healing garden to celebrate summer. Pre-registration is required to help us plan the food. Menu will include hamburgers, baked beans, chips and dessert. Cost will be $1.00 per person.

Warm-Up Exercises for Seniors

by Susan Brassard, Demand Media A proper warm-up session before exercise reduces the risk of injury.

While warm-up exercises are a vital first step in anyone’s exercise program, they are especially important for older adults who may be less active or sedentary. A proper warm-up increases your heart rate and respiration and increases body temperature, which warms the muscles.

Regardless of your activity level, it is essential to begin slowly and build up the level of your warm-ups over time.

Because stretching cold muscles can cause muscle injury, do not substitute stretching exercises for a genuine warmup, according to the Mayo Clinic. Ask your primary health-care provider for a clean bill of health before beginning any exercise program.

Benefits The purpose of a warm-up session is to prepare your body for a more active phase of exercise. As you progress through your warm-up routine, the increased blood flow throughout your body delivers additional oxygen to your muscles, which helps to improve muscle efficiency and reaction time. Performed correctly, a warm-up session also serves to reduce stress and tension in your body and mind, and mentally prepares you for your upcoming exercise session.

Examples A brisk walk, jumping jacks or riding a stationary bicycle are suitable warm-up exercises for seniors in good health and physical condition.

If you have a chronic health condition, or are recovering from an illness or medical procedure, a slow, leisurely walk might be a good alternative, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Chair exercises such as head, arm and shoulder rolls are suitable warm-ups for seniors with limited mobility. Whether seated or standing, marching in place with your arms swinging freely in opposition to your raised knee, will help your body to remain in balance. Ankle circles and leg extensions can also be performed from a standing or sitting position.

Meet the Staff David Montgomery

Account Clerk for Senior Services David has been responsible for “taking care of business” for 11 years at the Johnson City Senior Center. His job duties include the processing of check requests, payroll, processing invoices, and making daily deposits. He also prepares financial reports for grant funding and the Senior Center Foundation. Outside of his financial responsibilities he registers Silver Sneaker® participants so they can begin to be active. He is a native of Carter County and received his higher education degree from ETSU. He makes his home of 23 years with his wife, Teresa, in Johnson City where he has also been a Pastor for a local church for over 18 years. You may have heard him on the radio as he has done a weekly radio program for over 12 years. David, in his, “spare” time enjoys playing the rhythm guitar and bass guitar. He also enjoys going to car shows, being outdoors, and walking his dog. Anytime you see David and ask him how he is doing, his answer is always the same, “I am blessed”

Shady Oaks Garden Club Flower Show Friday and Saturday, May 20 1-5p and May 21, 9-2p • Cost: Free Shady Oaks Garden Club is presenting a Standard Flower Show at the Memorial Park Community Center which will showcase the activities available at the center. The show is open to the public on Friday, May 20 from 1:00-5:00 and also on Saturday, May 21 from 9:00-2:00. There will be twenty-four floral designs including table designs. Members will also be providing educational displays about different aspects of gardening. A large horticulture display of cut flowers and growing plants ranging from roses to unusual cacti will be included in the show. Girls, Inc will be displaying their designs in a special youth section of the show. Members of the community who attended the Floral Plaque Workshop held in April have been invited to exhibit their work. There will also be an information/hospitality desk at the show which will provide a directory for the show as well membership information. The show is free and handicap accessible.
