JCSC Foundation News It’s no April Fool’s prank, the Johnson City Senior Center Foundation hosted their 2nd Deerslayer event and added a Deerslayer Jr event for kids at Wing Deer Park on April 1st. At the time of writing this article, there were 182 adults and 54 kids registered. The Deerslayer committee has worked diligently over the past 12 months putting this event together. Hip Hikers Hiking 101 Tuesday: April 11 Leave MPCC at 9a. Return approx. 12:30p.

Cost: Free We will be taking a nice easy hike approximately 2.4 miles along Sinking Waters Trail at Warriors Path State Park.

This is an enjoyable hike through various natural environments. We’ll also see some history of the previous settlements. We will be carpooling!

Walkers and Talkers

Challenge Runs Saturday, April 1 through Wednesday, May 31, 2017 Registration Open – March 6 – April 8 Program is part of the Turtle Challenge Series

$8/person (for 2-month program) Turtle Trek Challenge participants will walk or run a total of 26.2 miles (a full marathon) within the two-month period. Participants may choose to walk anywhere, but will be given maps of walking trails through some of Johnson City parks. Updates will follow on specific times that staff will be at specific park locations handing out prizes and playing games along mapped walking trails.

Participants will check in with weekly progress. A celebration cookout will be held for participants on May 31 at Winged Deer Park’s Meredith Pavilion.

Winged Deer Park has the largest collection of naturalized Bluebell flowers in Northeast Tennessee and they only bloom for a very short window of time. AARP Paper Shredding Event Saturday, April 29 10a-2p Cost: Free Consumer fraud and identity theft are becoming an epidemic in our communities. To raise awareness and to promote prevention, AARP is sponsoring a community wide paper shredding event, to help you properly dispose of your sensitive documents and paperwork. The event will take place at Memorial Park Community Center upper parking lot (at

Dixie Diners’ First Dinner For 2017 Thursday, April 13 4:30p As you know we always go to lunch during the winter. Now Spring is here so we can start going out to dinner. Our first dinner of the year will be held Thursday, April 13th at Jack’s City Restaurant at 1805 North Roan. We will meet there at 4:30. Jack’s is located in the same plaza as Carmike Theater. They have an American menu with many Mexican dishes. Please sign up by April 11th.

Aeronautical Adventure Tuesday, April 18 leave MPCC at 9a, return approx. 2p Cost: $25 for adults and $10 for Tennessee high school students on down plus $1 fee for transportation to Airport. Airplane flights by a veteran fighter pilot, a chance to experience the thrill of flight and a great view of the earth and sky that many people never experience.

• The flight will last approx. 20 minutes • All flying is done in a Cessna 172 • Your pilot will be LT COLONEL BILL POWLEY (USAF RETIRED Colonel Powley is a graduate of the Air Force Academy and a Vietnam veteran who was fighter pilot that flew 347 combat missions. He is one of the most experienced pilots in the country. Please Preregister by April 11, 2017. Fee for the flight to be paid to pilot, Bill Powley at the airport. Cash or check accepted.

Tusculum College Old Oak Festival Saturday, April 22 Leave MPCC at 10a, return approx. 2p • Cost: $1 The festival will feature a wide variety of vendors, artists, including painters, craftsmen and sculptors, whose work will be available for purchase. A little bit country, a little bit rock and roll, plus jazz, bluegrass, folk and more will be featured and a variety of food will be available at Old Oak Festival at Tusculum College. Lunch on your own at the festival. Register by April 18.

Coming in May! Tennessee Riverboat Co. Luncheon Cruise Wednesday, May 17 Leave MPCC at 9a, return approx. 4p • Cost: $35 Enjoy a beautiful day outside with your friends and enjoy a great lunch while cruising the river in Knoxville! The lunch cruise includes a wonderful buffet, 1.5 hour cruise and either a narration from the Captain or Entertainment from one of our local entertainers. Exercise and Parkinson’s disease Instructors: Judy Hensley and Glenn Olsen from Olson s Martial Arts Academy Cost: Free Thursday, April 6, 11a-12p Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disease of the nervous system marked by tremor, muscular rigidity, and slow, imprecise movement, chiefly affecting middle-aged and elderly people. Research shows great benefits of exercise for the person living with Parkinson’s disease. Requirements are to not eat any food or drink after midnight. It is okay to take a sip of water with your medications. If you feel like you are having a low sugar problem, we can do a random check, too. We have juice and crackers available to increase your sugar level if needed.

Medication Side Effects on Seniors Instructors: ETSU Medical Residents Cost: Free • Tuesday, April 4 11a-12p This class will cover common medications and the side effects they may have on seniors. As we age, medication can have a different effect on your body. Bring your questions and come learn about medications. Call 423-434-6237 to reserve your seat.

Other Information This month we are opening our doors to welcome nursing students from Milligan and ETSU. Coming to meet the seniors, share information, participate in classes, do poster presentations and hold blood pressure clinics is part of their training for nursing school. Watch for them in Senior Lobby.

Volunteers working through AARP-VITA will prepare your Federal and Tennessee taxes for free at the Memorial Park Community Center beginning Wednesday February 8, 2017. Tax preparation will be by appointment only between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. each Wednesday and Friday until April 14. All volunteers are trained using IRS and AARP-VITA standards and must pass an IRS test. They can prepare all individual and joint tax returns, with a few exceptions for certain complicated returns. There are no age or income limitations for this free service. For appointments, please call the Center staff at 4346237 starting January 16, 2017.

You must bring proof of your Social Security number and the Social Security numbers of all dependents on the return, photo identification for all individuals, and all tax documents such as W-2s, 1099-Rs, SSA1099s, 1099-Bs, brokers statements, 1099-INTs and 1099-DIVs, as well as your filed 2015 tax return. If you purchased health insurance through the Marketplace, you must also bring your form 1095-A, which you will receive from the federal government. Until you have received all needed forms, the volunteers will be unable to complete your returns. All returns are e-filed, meaning refunds are generally issued with 10 days.

This is an ideal program for the individual who is facing total joint replacement both before surgery and after finishing post-surgical physical therapy. Fitness Tidbit!

Most people take part in aerobic activity to improve their cardiovascular endurance and burn fat. People weight-train to maintain lean muscle tissue and build strength. Those are the two most important elements of a fitness program, right? Actually, there are three important elements. Regrettably, flexibility training is often neglected.

Flexibility training: • Allows greater freedom of movement and improved posture • Increases physical and mental relaxation • Releases muscle tension and soreness • Reduces the risk of injury • Some people are naturally more flexible. Flexibility is primarily due to one’s genetics, gender, age, body shape and level of physical activity. As people grow older, they tend to lose flexibility, usually as a result of inactivity, but partially because of the aging process itself. The less active you are, the less flexible you are likely to be. As with cardiovascular endurance and muscle strength, flexibility will improve with regular training.

Stretch for Success Before stretching, take a few minutes to warm up, as stretching cold muscles may increase your chances for injury. Begin with a simple, low-intensity warmup, such as easy walking while swinging the arms in a wide circle. Spend at least five to 10 minutes warming up prior to stretching. The general recommendation for people starting an exercise program is to perform gentle dynamic-type stretches before a workout and static stretches after exercise.

When performing a static stretch: • Take a deep breath and slowly exhale as you gently stretch the muscle to a point of tension • Hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds, relax and then repeat the stretch two to four more times • Dynamic stretches are more advanced and should be instructed by a qualified professional Avoid these stretching mistakes: • Don’t bounce a stretch. Holding a stretch is more effective and there is less risk of injury.

• Don’t stretch a muscle that is not warmed up.

• Don’t strain or push a muscle too far. If a stretch hurts, ease up.

• Don’t hold your breath during the stretch. Continue to breathe normally.
