On Tuesday, we said a final farewell to our Year 11 ‘bubble’ in their Leavers Assembly. It was a very different event as it was outside and they were all very disappointed that their Prom had had to be cancelled due to ongoing COVID restrictions. However, it was an incredibly positive celebration of their time here at the school. There were student performances and Mr. Ryan, their progress leader gave a sincere and inspiring speech to his year group. It was so great to provide them with the opportunity to say good-bye and recognise one another’s achievements over the last 5 years. We look forward to welcoming many of them back in September to our Sixth Form but for those who are moving on to pastures new, we wish them all the luck and best wishes - we will miss you all, you have been a wonderful year group.

This week, I have been so impressed with how the Year 7s and 8s have approached their first set of exams in the sports hall. They have all taken them very seriously and were praised for their approach by Mr Hall, Exams Officer and the invigilators. Next week, we turn our focus to Year 10 who will be completing their first set of Pre-Public Exams and we wish them all well as they complete their final preparations. This week, all parents should have received a letter regarding our updated PSHE curriculum for September 2021. The programme of study will incorporate the updated Relationship and Sex Education curriculum, Mental Health curriculum, PHSE, Careers and our bespoke ‘building Character’ curriculum.

This is an amazing achievement and one to celebrate as a school community. I am sure you will recognise the huge digital support that was offered to us all during the remote learning period and continues through our 'Digital Strategy 2021'. Charlotte has received a lovely certificate but also a hand-written letter of thanks from the children's author Michael Morpurgo. I am incredibly proud of the whole school response to digital education, all teaching staff have fully embraced all opportunities to integrate digital resources into the classroom.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that students should be attending school in full school uniform or their PE Kit if they have PE on that day. Students will be given the opportunity to remove their blazer in lessons, but they shouldn’t be wearing an alternative jacket or jumper in its place. On PE days, they should come into school wearing their Roding Valley PE kit - no other sports kit is allowed. Furthermore, students should be wearing black leather shoes and not trainers each day except for their PE day. Please do contact their Year Progress Leader if there is a reason they haven’t got their ‘proper’ school shoes on.

This afternoon we have given out new boxes of Lateral Flow Covid Tests. Unfortunately, we have had reports from the public that some students were seen throwing them into bushes or dropping them on the pavement - this isn’t appropriate and doesn’t present the school in a very good light. Please can I ask that you continue to support the COVID testing and ensure that your child takes a lateral flow test every Sunday and Wednesday. There are rising cases now in Essex and it is important that we support the ongoing testing. Please immediately report any positive cases to the school covid@rodingvalley.net and follow up with a PCR test.

Safeguarding of children is always foremost in our mind and children are spending an ever-increasing amount of time online outside of school. Please do note, our child safe online E-Safety eight steps to keep safe included the bulletin. Also, it is not a pleasant read but it is important that all parents are aware of the risks of on-line sexual abuse and the national scale of the potential issue. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website.

It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling.

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

The Year 10 artists in Mr Tisdale's class have recently started their Human Forms project. They've looked at the facial proportion rules, had a photoshoot done and from these images they have created some great selfportraits in pencil.... they really are fantastic, I could have chosen every drawing in the class to share with you, but here are just 2 of them.

Next, they're working from photos of them pulling faces, which will make for even more exciting work which I'll share with you in the future.

Well done to the whole class, you've done excellently.

– Academic Lectures This week, we launched the first of our Academic Lectures, with Mr Ibrahim leading the way with his lecture on petroleum engineering with Year 8.

RHVS SPORTS NEWS Year 7 Essex Championships West Essex Trials On Wednesday 16th June at Ashton Playing fields a group of Year 7 athletes competed with students from West Hatch and Davenant High Schools to earn a place on the West Essex and Harlow District Athletics team for the upcoming Year 7 Essex County Athletics Championships.

All the students did brilliantly in their events and with a lot of top 3 finishes, however with competition high, seven of our Year 7 team achieved a place on the West Essex and Harlow District Athletics Team and will competing on Wednesday 30th June at Chelmsford Athletics Track, Melbourne Park, Chelmsford. Well done to all that took part it was a fantastic afternoon of athletics.

      

Essex Schools County Athletics Championships: On Saturday 12th June saw Year 11 student Tolani Aradeon take part in the pole vault at the Essex Schools County Athletics Championships at Chelmsford Athletics Track. Tolani jumped a height of 2m 50cm which was a new personal best, saw her finish in 2nd place and achieve an invitation to the English Schools Athletics Championships.

A huge well done Tolani from all the PE Department on an incredible performance!

The “Consulting Detective” Sherlock Holmes. A well-known genius within London, and all over the world. But have you ever wondered, what was going on in his head?

At 221B, Baker Street, Sherlock Holmes was struggling with a case.

Riley thinks she is an ordinary girl in an ordinary school, but little does she know that little voices inside her head tell her what to do. They are called:

“Damn it!” Anger shouted, slamming his fists on the control pad, making Holmes slam his fists down on the table. “I just don’t get it! We always solve cases! ALWAYS!” “Relax. It’s not worth losing your temper over. We’ll never solve Mr Marks’ murder…” mumbled Sadness. “Who would want to kill him, anyway? He had no friends, no family…” She sighed. “It’s no use…”

Anger shot a dirty look at Sadness, and lit a pipe with the flames erupting from his head.

“Ugh, DON’T!” cried Disgust. “The fumes from those things get everywhere!”

Before Anger could respond, Joy interrupted.

“Chaps, CHAPS! Calm down, everyone!”

They all turned to look at her, even Fear, who was hiding under the control pad.

“Look, I know we’re struggling with this case, but hear me out! Let’s just go through our notes again, and see what we can do,” Joy announced with a smile. She fiddled around with the control pad, and Holmes picked up a small notebook.

“Let’s see…” said Joy, putting on her reading glasses.

“James Marks, age 46, worked as a janitor at a church.

Y’know, picking up the rice and stuff. Found dead three days ago, from arsenic poisoning. He had no known family-” She was cut off by a knock on the door…

Ellie Wakinshaw, Year 7

Joy, Disgust, Fear, Sadness and Anger.

It was Monday morning, but Joy was asleep. Anger decided to take control.

Anger: I HATE MONDAYYYYYSSS With a flick of a switch, Riley woke up. Anger stomped around Riley’s mind meaning she woke up mad. This abrupt awaking forced Joy to spring to action as Riley flung herself out of bed. Her mini moods were bouncing around her head – all desperate to take control.

Joy: Anger...Anger! Give me the controls.

Anger: NEVER A war broke between them and Anger burst in to flames.

Fear: FIRE! FIRE! FIRE! Ahhhhhhhh!

Disgust: EW! Look at the colours, green is so not the new red.

Anger: HEY, WATCH IT! Riley was a mixture of emotions: scared, angry, happy the confusing cycle continued. All of a sudden, it was quiet and all her moods were formed into one! She was confused and puzzled about what just happened. What would you do?

Isabelle Davenport, Year 7

“Oh my gosh, what a situation Ellie’s got herself in to!”

“No reason to panic!” Holly said loudly to make sure she could be heard above the other voices. “Okay, so, this is what we are going to do – “ “Who put you in charge?!” Yelled Ruben.

“Me! Now, shut up!”

“Holly, what are we going to do?” Cried Carly.

“Stop talking, that’s what! You’re confusing Ellie with all this chatter!”

Everyone hesitated and stared out at the scene.

Both Tyler and Ellie were staring blankly at each other. Ellie almost looked possessed.

“Hurry up, guys!” Holly shouted, “she’s going to have a breakdown if we don’t react fast! “ “Then you do something!” Ruben raged.

“Ummm, okay, okay…” Holly breezed, “then how about ummm, we tell him that she is really happy to be here! “ Holly reached her hand for a button, but Ruben had to bargain!

“Ruben! What in the world are you doing?”

Then Amanda came, “how about we make her run away!” She said raising her hand in the air. They all stared awkwardly at Amanda. Holly shook her head and returned to what she was doing, but once again someone had to interrupt! This time it was Fred, the annoying one who always laughs at his own jokes. Without any notice from the others, he slipped his arm in between Amanda and Carly. He pressed a button that made Ellie laugh and go hysterical. This made Tyler ask – almost instantly – “are you alright Ellie?”

Then, Ruben barged in and pressed the button, “No! How dare you ask me that! What’s your problem? “ “Ellie!” Yelled the teacher. Ellie turned from Tyler to look at the teacher and then she began to cry. “I need to go!

Right now!” Clearly Amanda had found her way to the button and was starting to control Ellie. Everything was now awkward because of her. Holly knew she needed to intervene, but how could she save the situation?

We have a huge number of images taken from the coursework of all of our creative arts students for you to explore. Please do take a look at the range and depth of work that our amazing students have created over the last 18 months. Some of which has obviously had to be produced independently at home during lockdown.

It’s Good to Talk!!

There is a word that captures how talking helps—catharsis. Talking leads to a catharsis, which means a feeling of relief. The charged feelings within us become less charged. Nothing has changed that caused the suffering in our lives, but talking has drained off some of the pain and this brings relief. Talking about your feelings can help you stay in good mental health and deal with times when you feel troubled. ... It's part of taking charge of your wellbeing and doing what you can to stay healthy.

Talking can be a way to cope with a problem you've been carrying around in your head for a while.

Positive self-talk can help you improve your outlook on life. It can also have lasting positive health benefits, including improved well-being and a better quality of life. Talking and listening to children does lots of important things. It improves your bond with them, and encourages them to listen to you. It helps them to form relationships and to build self-esteem.

   

Venting to a trusted friend.

Discussing a conflict with a partner.

With a qualified therapist.

Being open about your struggles.

Openly discussing mental health in society helps break down stigma surrounding mental illness while also reminds us that help is available and we're not struggling alone. Talking about mental health can encourage those having thoughts of suicide or dealing with severe mental illness to reach out to others for help. There are a number of benefits to talking:

 Helps see problems in a new light.  Makes decision making and problem solving easier.

     

Gets rid of the power of the feeling.

Reduces anxiety.

Eases depression.

Increases resilience.

Reduces stress.

Reduces anxiety.

Year 7 This week Year 7 students sat their end of Year Assessments and I would like to congratulate them on how well they conducted themselves throughout the process. This was their first set of assessments in school, therefore a new procedure for them to adapt to. Teachers are currently busy marking these assessments and students will receive their marks in due course. A school report will go out to parents/carers before the end of the term.

Last week, a selection of Year 7 students took part in the West Essex Athletics trials competing against other schools in the District. The Year 7 team performed amazingly which lots of students coming away with top three positions.

A particular well done to Jake Bramley, Nova-Leigh Canning, Dexter Njomgoue, Sapphire Fyffe, Ava Margetts, Jayden Fyffe and Madalina Turcan who have all qualified to represent the District at the Athletics Championships held at Chelmsford Athletics Track, Melbourne Park. Good luck to those students next week!

As we approach the end of term, I would like to reiterate our high expectations in school, specifically uniform and carrying the correct equipment each day. It is great to see on a weekly basis the large amount of ARE points students achieve which I encourage them to continue to do leading up to the summer break.

This will provide you the opportunity to replenish any medication held and ensure it is in date. All medication must be returned when your child returns in September.

Year 8 Mid-way through our final half term of Year 8 and what a busy one it is. This week has seen year 8 sit assessments in different subjects. This was one of their first experiences of sitting GCSE style exams in the Sports Hall, and what an effort they gave! I am so proud of all in year 8 for the way they have conducted themselves over the last couple of days. I have had several members of staff tell me how brilliant they were when entering the exam hall and completing their exams. Well done to all of you, and hopefully that brilliant work is reflected in the assessment results. Please do take the time to go through your assessments and look at the areas you struggled with, to ensure you can close that knowledge gap and be ready for year 9. .

As we head into the final few weeks of the academic year, please can I remind you that the same expectations remain around uniform. Students are to ensure they are wearing the correct uniform on the correct day, and that school shoes, blazers and ties are worn at ALL times with their uniform. There are no relaxations of the rules just because there are only a few weeks left.

I would like to mention several students and classes who have been recognised by their teachers for some incredible work over the past couple of weeks. Brandon J & Aaliyah A 8MAG have been recognised for their exceptional work in Drama by Mr Wilson. He was very impressed with their leadership skills in their recent group tasks. 8MAG have also been nominated by Miss Langlet for their exceptional work in French. Finally, 8AR have been nominated by Miss Langlet & Mrs Walker as form of the week for always being a pleasure, having all the right equipment and having such high uniform standards. Well done to all those students and classes on their continued hard work.

I am going to be launching a 'stretch and challenge' competition next week with some of our hardest working students. This will be a competition involving a select group of Year 7 and Year 8 students, to see who can achieve the highest amount of points over the final 3 weeks of term .

Points will be awarded for attempting extension tasks, receiving ARE points and offering peer support in lessons. There will be a reward in the final week of term for those students who win this competition by scoring the highest points.

Please do look out for this challenge next week to see if you have been selected for it.

With only three and a half weeks left of Year 8, I encourage all of you to be the best version of yourself and finish the year off on a high. Try your hardest, look the part and be kind and respectful. If you or your child are struggling with anything at all, please don't hesitate to get in touch with myself or your child's academic mentor.

Year 9 Another great few weeks for the Year 9’s, they have started their Year 10 / 11 GCSE courses. This has been a significant shift in their progress through the school as they enter a period of two years before their final examinations. I have been extremely impressed by their attitude and maturity during this transition, many of them feeding back to me that it helps them stay focussed when they are learning subjects they have chosen.

Year 9 have this week been completing assessments in all of their subjects. These assessments will help determine the current ability level of your child and ensure they are placed in the correct classes for their subjects. Please ensure your child has gone through each of their assessments when they are returned to them, and identify where their gaps in their knowledge are. These are the areas that your child should be focusing on in preparation for returning to school in year 10. If you require any subject specific guidance, please do direct your enquiry to the subject teacher in the first instance. They will be in the best position to offer relevant advice course content, study tips, ready list and exam preparation.

In Character and Culture, the students have looked at rail safety and this week's assembly was on Pride. Well done to Ms Preston and Mr. Ryan for a welldelivered assembly.

As we come towards the end of term our attention is turning to our summer break. Some will have plans to go on holiday, others have plans for family time, and let’s face it, some will be looking forward to 12 hours a day on their games console shooting imaginary aliens.

We all deserve a good rest. I am looking forward to ending what has been a difficult year with fun and positivity. My mind also turns to next year with the hope of normality and continuing the hard work that all of our students are putting in.

Year 11 I can't believe that on Tuesday we officially said goodbye to year 11. It wasn't what any of us expected, however, it was still really good. Due to the current COVID situation we had to have the Leavers' assembly outside on the Astro. Thank God it didn't rain. It was lovely to see so many students enjoying themselves, signing shirts and listening to the entertainment from Arda C, Camron B, Tolani A and Vienna I. I can't believe the amount of feathers that were left on the ground.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the rescheduled Prom.

Just to confirm it has been moved to the 19th July. However, this is also still subject to COVID regulations.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite Year 11 students in to school to empty their lockers (if they haven't done so already) As this is something that would need to be supervised, we have asked that students come in after 3.30pm and ask for myself or Ms. Allen.

Uniform, should you like to donate your old uniform to the school we are very happy to accept donations.

How Can I Access Edulink?

EduLink can be accessed on any device – PC, laptop, tablet or mobile device – via the web browser or via the EduLink app. The link to access the EduLink login page on a web browser is www.edulinkone.com Alternatively, you can download the EduLink App which is available to download for free on Apple or on Android.

Both the App and the web browser will display this log-in screen.

Requires iOS 8.0 or later.

The School ID is ‘Roding’.

Requires Android 4.4 and up.

Parents/Carers will need to enter the Username and Password they have been provided with and click ‘Log in’.

Navigating Edulink You are able to navigate each of the following areas in EduLink: 

Achievement: You van view all positive achievements that have been awarded to your child



Behaviour: You will be able to see all behaviour points given to you child and any sanctions given to your child including detentions.

Medical Information: In this section you can see all of the medical information that we have on file for your child



Account Information: In this section you can view the current address we have for your child on file, your child’s Year group and the name of their Form tutor



Timetable: In this section you can view your child’s daily timetable



Absence Reporting: This feature will allow you to send a direct message to our Attendance Officer, to notify us of any absence for your child



Linked Resources: This section contains links to all the schools learning resources available to your child both at school and at home



Update Information: This section shows all of the contact information we hold for yourself and your child. You can review and update this information with any changes that may occur



Exams: You can see all of your child upcoming exams; your child can also access this information so they can manage their own exam schedule

Classroom How to Log on to Google Classroom?

Students can log into their Gmail using their school email address and their password. Their school email will be the year they started at RVHS started plus their first initial and surname @rodingvalley.net (example- 19plarkin@rodingvalley.net).

Once your child has have logged in, they will need to click on the google apps button and then select ‘Google Classroom’ Your child will then be able to see all of the classes they belong to.

They will then need to click on the class they want to use resources for and take a look at everything that their class teacher has posted for them to work on. They will be able to download items and make comments on them. Teachers will be regularly posting new work on their Google Classrooms.

What to Do if your child is a Missing a Subject their Google Classroom?

If your child is missing a Google Classroom for one of their subjects, they will need to click on the addition symbol, followed by ‘Join Class’ and then enter the Class Code for their missing subject.

Class Codes are available from their subject teacher.

Top Tips for Our Students  Students must keep up to date with their lessons by using Google Classroom every day.  Use their workbooks to complete the work shown on their Google Classroom.  Don’t slack on presentation! Keep their notes in order of the lessons on the Google Classroom.  Year 11 and 13 Students: There will be revision materials available on Google Classroom.

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum.

Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature.

Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned.

These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.

What is Seneca?

Seneca is a free home learning & revision platform that is very popular with our students. It is based on cognitive science, has adaptive learning and can be accessed by our students via their phones!

What Content is available to our Students through Seneca?

Seneca has resources available for KS3, KS4 and KS5 students that has been supplied to them from AQA, OCR, EdExcel Pearson and IGCSE. Our students will be able to access content designed for each of their subjects and also for their specific courses.

There is so much to choose from.

Some areas are even linked to the Exam Boards Course Specifications.

How to Access Seneca?

Students will need to go to https://www.senecalearning.com/, click try for free and create a log in with their school email address.

Once Logged in Once they are logged in, students are able to search for different subject areas and learn about their chosen topic. At the end of each subject presentation there will be a quiz on the presentation This Online tool will enable our students to stay on top of their home learning.
