It has been a busy & productive half term for us here at Roding Valley!

Last week, we introduced our Year 10 cohort to our RVHS Revision & Study techniques to help prepare them for their end of Year 10 PPEs (Pre Public Examinations). This will be a fantastic opportunity for our Year 10s to show their teachers what they have learnt thus far on their GCSE courses. This week, we will be launching our GCSE revision microsite to Year 10. This website, made by our teachers, contains all of the revision materials, templates & links that will be needed to get our students ready for success. Click here to access the website.

The GCSE & A-Level public examinations have now begun, and the Year 11/13 students are fully in the examination mindset. We have every confidence in our students' abilities and look forward to seeing the excellent outcomes in the Summer.

Last week it was mental health awareness week, and some of the ways in which we acknowledged and reflected on this were via our Personal Development Programme where we looked at the theme of loneliness and discussed how we could tackle this. We also took this opportunity to relaunch Wellbeing Wednesday & our Mental Health Support Team. You will also find a page within this bulletin purely dedicated to wellbeing.

We look forward to celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee during the month of June & will be including lots of moments within our curriculum for our students to discuss & reflect on this historic moment in History.

Just a polite reminder that, in lieu of the Platinum Jubilee, the school will close on Thursday 26th, and this will be a normal school day. The only students that will be on-site on Friday 27th will be those students sitting public examinations in Years 11 & 13.

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website.

It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling.

Within a school community there will be students who have allergies some mild whilst others can be more severe and potentially life threatening.

With the above in mind we would like to ask you to remind your child(ren) to always ask our canteen staff if they are unsure what ingredients have been used.

Also, please ensure if your child has any known allergies we are made aware so we can support them in school and if required hold medication in school.

Year 7 I would like to thank the members of staff who have given up their weekend to take the Year 7s on the recent football trips. The last trip to Manchester to watch City vs Newcastle was a great success and the students had a wonderful time.

There have also been two further trips arranged with one trip to London Zoo and another to The British Transport Museum. I hope the students thoroughly enjoy these. Please be aware however, that student’s behaviour does need to be exemplar on these trips as they are representing the school On the whole, the year group is responding well to the new rules surrounding the behaviour on the Astro, I would like to thank you for your continued support in relation to this. The uniform in the year group is on the whole spectacular but there are one or two students who are wearing trainers instead of shoes. If you are unclear about what is allowed and what isn't please either check the school website, or email me.

The Year 7s are incredible year group and I am very proud of them. I thank you all for your support with them.

Year 8 It is hard to believe another fortnight has passed, we are quickly approaching the last half term of Year 8, which is an exciting thought.

In Year 8 we have just completed a competition, against Year 7 and 9 called the 'Motivation to Learn' report, the winners of this will have a pizza making party, if you were part of this competition please keep your ears open for when this will be.

I am looking forward to seeing all the Year 8 winners there!

Next week we have Year 8 students going on the Greenwich Challenge and Enrichment trip, lots of students and teachers are really looking forward to this. Please ensure that we are representing our Roding Valley community well and making the school proud.

As the summer approaches it will be getting warmer, please ensure we are still always wearing our uniform correctly, with our blazer's on and shirts tucked in. Additionally, for the PE kit, the blazer must still be worn with this.

We have Year 8 assessments approaching, please make use of the microsite available, as well as our Roding Valley revision techniques to ensure that we are achieving the best possible results.

Year 9 Another fortnight has passed by, and we now move into the final two weeks of Year 9. I honestly can't believe how quickly their time is passing by.

As you know, students will commence their GCSE options after half term, which means they will receive a completely new timetable on their return, which will include their option choices. This will also see them allocated a new form group, as we go from nine groups down to eight. All children will be reshuffled according to their option blocks. If for any reason you would like your child to keep their current academic mentor, please do drop me an email explaining why. I know some students have built wonderful relationships with their current academic mentor and it would be a shame in some cases to interrupt this. However, it may not be possible in all cases for students to remain with their current academic mentor. Students will be receiving letters this week to confirm which options they have been allocated so please do look out for this letter and discuss it with your child.

Unfortunately, we still have many students who are not meeting our basic uniform expectations. Please can you ensure your child is adhering to this by checking their skirt is of the correct length (knee length), they have the correct footwear on and that they only one pair of earrings in with no other jewellery. Can you also ensure your child doesn't leave home each morning without their tie or blazer. We have high expectations around uniform and if your child continues to not quite get it right, sanctions will be issued, items will be confiscated and in severe cases, students will be isolated until they can get it right.

There is lot's happening in school over the final two weeks of this half term and I am so excited to be able to experience many of these opportunities with our wonderful Year 9 students. On Thursday & Friday, I will be joining our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh students on their assessment expedition. I'm wishing them the best of luck, and fingers crossed for some wonderful sunshine. The following Thursday, I am also excited to take a group of students to the London Dungeon. This is yet another wonderful opportunity for our students to experience learning outside the classroom.

I wanted to remind all our students that the Summer PE extracurricular timetable is now up and running. This is a wonderful opportunity to get out in the sunshine, meet new people and learn some new skills. There are also so many other clubs on offer, and as I always say, put yourself out there and try something new!

Year 10 STUDY SKILLS and REVISION lesson All Year 10 were involved in a study skills and revision session delivered by Miss Larkin in preparation for their upcoming exams - Mon 20th June - Fri 1st July (inclusive) The session concentrated on study methods, revision techniques, planning exam revision timetables and study time management.

I know Miss Larkin put a huge amount of preparation into the session and trust the students found it useful.

As we approach the May half term break it is a perfect opportunity for Year 10 to begin their revision now to ensure they are fully prepared for the end of year exams.

With Year 11 beginning their GCSE exams and study leave approaching it is important that Year 10 take on the role of being Roding Valley's senior students in KS4. Year 10 will be expected to set an example as role models for our lower school pupils, something which I know they will embrace.

Year 11 I hope this message finds everyone well as we enter into exam week.

There are a few messages for parents and students to be aware of. Firstly, students should enter via the Sports Hall Gate which will be open from 8.20am every day. If your child has a morning exam they should be ready at their exam room for 8.45am. (Students will be able to go to the canteen for some breakfast and a revision session prior to a morning examination).

From next week students should sign in and out via reception to any revision sessions that are taking place. If they are just in for an exam, they should attend 15 minutes before the start time so that there can be a prompt start and they will be registered in the exam, so do not need to sign in. All the GCSE (and GCE A-level) exams are shared below in the summer timetable.

This is obviously a crucial time for students and I have shared a link with you all with some really helpful information, tips and advice.

Please note that the Prom tickets are still on sale on ParentPay and the yearbook will be published soon, I will contact you when this is ready.

Year 7 Digital Week Our Year 7 students had a fantastic time during Digital, making use of the Phet animations to investigate the primary and secondary colours of light in their Science Lesson and then producing a variety of tasks about the formation of the Khalsa in Sikhism in their Religious Education Lesson.

The Globe Players - Macbeth Today our Year 10 and 11 Students were fortunate to experience Macbeth performed by The Globe Players

Congratulations to Indie Langstone, whose work has been selected for the Royal Academy Student’s Summer Exhibition 2022.

There were 21,000 entries into this competition and Indie is the first ever Roding Valley student whose work has been selected! This is a really prestigious exhibition and we are delighted for Indie!

On Monday 9th May, our Year students Christina Robinson, Rosa Marshall, Finn Madigan and Bianca Nedelcu attended the Jack Petchey Regional Final at Brentwood County High. All of our students gave incredible performance, we not be prouder.

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

Classroom How to Log on to Google Classroom?

Students can log into their Gmail using their school email address and their password. Their school email will be the year they started at RVHS started plus their first initial and surname @rodingvalley.net (example- 19plarkin@rodingvalley.net).

Once your child has have logged in, they will need to click on the google apps button and then select ‘Google Classroom’ Your child will then be able to see all of the classes they belong to.

They will then need to click on the class they want to use resources for and take a look at everything that their class teacher has posted for them to work on. They will be able to download items and make comments on them. Teachers will be regularly posting new work on their Google Classrooms.

What to Do if your child is a Missing a Subject their Google Classroom?

If your child is missing a Google Classroom for one of their subjects, they will need to click on the addition symbol, followed by ‘Join Class’ and then enter the Class Code for their missing subject.

Class Codes are available from their subject teacher.

Top Tips for Our Students  Students must keep up to date with their lessons by using Google Classroom every day.  Use their workbooks to complete the work shown on their Google Classroom.  Don’t slack on presentation! Keep their notes in order of the lessons on the Google Classroom.  Year 11 and 13 Students: There will be revision materials available on Google Classroom.

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum.

Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature.

Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned.

These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.

What is Seneca?

Seneca is a free home learning & revision platform that is very popular with our students. It is based on cognitive science, has adaptive learning and can be accessed by our students via their phones!

What Content is available to our Students through Seneca?

Seneca has resources available for KS3, KS4 and KS5 students that has been supplied to them from AQA, OCR, EdExcel Pearson and IGCSE. Our students will be able to access content designed for each of their subjects and also for their specific courses.

There is so much to choose from.

Some areas are even linked to the Exam Boards Course Specifications.

How to Access Seneca?

Students will need to go to https://www.senecalearning.com/, click try for free and create a log in with their school email address.

Once Logged in Once they are logged in, students are able to search for different subject areas and learn about their chosen topic. At the end of each subject presentation there will be a quiz on the presentation This Online tool will enable our students to stay on top of their home learning.
