Reflecting on the last couple of weeks, I wanted to share how pleased we were with the huge amount of interest that the local community and so many of our internal students showed towards our 6th form open evening last week. We held two 6th form leadership team talks and I was so proud to see so many of our own students sat alongside prospective external students; all wanting to be in our 6th form next year. Ms Curling wanted to remind everyone that all applications must be submitted by the 19th January; the application form can be found by clicking here.

This term has also been a busy one in regards to Pre-Public examinations. Both of the Year 11 and 13 cohorts have now done their first round of mock examinations (PPEs), and we have been incredibly proud of the hard work that has been shown by the majority of students. My team have worked really hard to mark, assess and moderate these PPEs; your child will now begin to receive feedback and ‘closing the gap’ tasks to ensure that they move forward. In January, the progress team will be delivering a series of assemblies with key messages to these year groups to ensure that we close as many gaps as possible to ready them for the next round of PPEs in term 2.

On the subject of examinations, our Year 9 cohort will sit exams in the core & EBACC subjects from Tuesday 12th December to Thursday 14th December. Mr Ryan will be writing to all parents with full details this week. You will have already received a letter from Mr Ryan & Mr Miah detailing the revision support that has been put in place. You can find that letter here.

Lastly, I will be sharing all details regarding student’s return to school in January 2024; but just to remind all parents/carers that all students return to school, as normal, on Monday 8 th January 2024.

Year 7 News Message from Ms Hegerty The festive season is upon us and we have lots of opportunities for students to get involved with in the run down to Christmas!

The Manchester football trip is fast approaching led by Mr Ryan on the 12th December - there are currently only 5 spaces left!

Key dates for your diary: Tuesday 5th December - Winter Concert in the Main Hall 6.30 - 7.30pm Thursday 14th December - GCSE Panto Primary School Matinee - 10.30am | Evening Performance 6-7pm Please note that we have very limited catering facilities at RVHS owing to the RAAC disruption so we do encourage that all children bring their own food to school if they are able to do so to avoid disruption at break and lunchtimes.

Year 7 and 8 students who need to purchase food are now able to do so in Zone 3 over the bridge at break times to speed up queues.

Some standards of footwear have been slipping amongst Year 7 recently - all students should be wearing appropriate black footwear to school. If students are wearing trainers they will be given different shoes to wear each day from RVHS until their shoes are rectified - trainer passes will no longer be issued unless in exceptional circumstances.

Year 8 News Message from Miss Reed As we approach the end of the Autumn term, I hope we are all starting to prepare for the Christmas festivities and are embracing the rather cold temperatures we are experiencing at the moment. With this in mind, I would like to remind everyone that students should be bringing a coat into school which should be worn over the top of the blazer. Students are expected to remove coats when inside the classroom.

Y8's assembly this week was focused around modern foreign languages which was great and students were provided with an insight into lots of students we have in the school who speak a variety of languages.

We also handed out 5 queue jumpers to students selected at random who were in the top 50 for completing their Bedrock tasks.

Lunch - I would like to remind everyone that the expectation is still that students bring their own lunch into school. Although we are providing food, we cannot always guarantee that students will be served. This is due to our canteen still being out of action.

Theatre trip - I am very excited to be attending the English trip next week with Y8 students to see Mrs Doubtfire. This is a great trip put on by the English department. I believe there still may be some places available so please get in touch if you are interested.

There are still a few tickets left for our trip to see Mrs Doubtfire at The Shaftesbury Theatre on Thursday 7 December. If your child would like to attend this performance, use ParentPay to book a place for them.

Year 9 News Message from Mr Ryan We have had a rather busy couple of weeks in Year 9 and I can't believe how quickly the time has flown.

I would like to congratulate Arthur Luton for being our Bedrock Champion this week 152 points! Please encourage your child to spend as much time as possible on Bedrock. The minimum should be 40 minutes a week.

I have had the privilege of taking Year 9 students to see 'Elf' the musical. It was a pleasure to watch this festive favourite with our well-behaved students. This is one of many trips that have been arranged by the English department.

Mr Naidoo and Mr Ifrim have asked for an expression of interest to be expressed in relation to the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. Please contact either of them for further information.

On Tuesday I got to spend two hours teaching the year group how to revise and prepare for their upcoming exams. These exams are in the next few weeks and it is important that they are taken seriously. The results of these tests can be used to allocate options and pathways. You can help your child by accessing our microsite here.

Please encourage them to revise as much as possible.

We have Christmas jumper day on the 8th December, full details of this can be found further on in this bulletin in the House Updates section. Finally, just before we break up we get to have our celebration assembly. Where I look forward to celebrating all of the students' successes.

Year 11 News Message from Miss Pinches We are nearing the end of our Autumn term, and what a term it has been! Students have been receiving their mock results this week and completing valuable Close the Gap lessons in order to improve their progress. Now is the time for students to be reflecting on their results and putting active strategies in place moving towards our PPE round 2 in February 2024. Please ensure students are reaching out to their subject teachers to inquire about any lunch and after school interventions running and any resources they may need prior to the term holidays.

Students have started their career meetings with our advisor, Ms Mason. Again, these are valuable meetings to have a plan (and a back-up!) for Post 16 options. Please do reach out to Ms Mason, dmason@rodingvalley.net, if you have any urgent queries.

It was wonderful to have some many parents and students on site on Wednesday for our Sixth Form Open Evening. We are so incredibly proud of our Sixth Form provision and have had great conversations with students about their desire to stay with us at RVHS for the full 7 year journey. If you were unable to attend, please refer to our website and the subject prospectus (linked here) regarding entry criteria and be encouraging your child to speak to the relevant subject teachers if they have any questions.

Finally, I want to take the opportunity to remind parents and students of our punctuality policy. We expect all students to be in school on time every day. The gates open at 8:15am, the bell rings at 8:25am with the expectation that all students are in their Period 1 lesson by 8:30am. For each lesson of the day: staff take the register in the first 5 minutes and if a student arrives after that point they are marked as late.

As a cohort, we are still struggling to be in our Period 1 lessons on time. Period 1 is a vital part of our day consisting of careers, assemblies, personal development and core subject interventions. We will be monitoring punctuality closely and placing students on punctuality report if there is a concern about consistent punctuality issues.

With only a few weeks to go this term, now is the time to push on and make the most of our learning time.

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. 6 Form News Message from Mrs Curling Newly Appointed Deputy House Captains We would like to introduce our newlyappointed deputy house captains in Year 12.

Sixth Form Open Evening for Year 11 Students We hosted our sixth form open evening on Wednesday 29th November. So many of our year 12 and 13 students helped at this event. We could not have made it such a success without their contributions. In particular we’d like to thank Kae Kieu who played piano as the guests entered the hall and our student speakers: Tuna and Skye.

UCAS Success We would like to congratulate the 30 students who have now submitted their UCAS applications. Of these, 7 have been invited for an interview at Oxbridge. We wish them every success with this.

Please encourage your child to book their UCAS appointments as soon as possible. Our deadline for submission is 15th December. University admissions teams will be inundated in January, so there is a real first-mover advantage - last week we had a student receive all 5 offers within a week of sending off his application Working hard is important, but so is a sense of balance. If you are concerned about your child feeling overwhelmed, or not coping well with the pressure of exams, please do get in touch with one of us.

6 Form News Food Bank donations We are collecting food bank items for two local charities: 3food4u and Epping Forest Food Bank. This is part of our house competition and the winning house will receive a prize. For ideas on what to donate, please see the suggested list.

They are also interested in receiving books and toys for children who may be facing Christmas without a present to open.

Christmas Jumper Day is next week and this year it is for everyone! Save The Children, who are a huge charity, are doing their annual Christmas jumper day and we are inviting all students to participate by wearing a Christmas jumper on Friday 8th December!

Please note this is NOT a non-uniform day – all other school uniforms MUST be worn – You need to donate a minimum of £1 in order to wear a Christmas jumper. You cannot wear a jumper if you do not donate so please do bring a pound coin with you to drop into your house bucket when you walk through the gate.

Rendell is still leading the podium and creating an even bigger gap between the top and bottom! Well done to all those in Rendell who are contributing significantly to the scoreboard and keeping their house on that top spot.

It is the last opportunity now to bring in any of the listed items to help us help the people in need. This year more than ever people are in need and if we could do anything to make their Christmas a little better then lets do it!

Toys & Books are also welcome as there are children in need of a present this Christmas so if you have any that you no longer need please do bring them in and drop them into your dedicated house box. Remember it is also a house point per item!

Christmas is the season of family, belonging and joy – to spread cheer and happiness throughout all homes and families. Can you help us provide basic food and Christmas joy this Christmas with our appeal? We are working with Epping Forest Food Bank and ‘3food4U’ to help make someone's Christmas a little easier this year! We need your help to bring in some of the essentials and every item donated equates to a house point for your house. There is a letter coming out that will have further detail on what you can do to get involved and help us help them!

Epping Forest Youth Conference Ten students from year 10 were taken to the Epping Forest Civic Council for a day of debating and informative talks given by guest speakers. The itinerary was provided by the council as the students engaged in talks from guest speakers about debt, money management, taxes and the current cost of living crisis. We also heard about what local schools and charity organisations are doing to help those struggling to buy food and purchase school uniforms. Following this, the students engaged in a debate where they were able to pick whether they were for or against public transport being free for students and young people under the age of 25.

Student write up - Epping Forest Youth Conference My favourite part of the day was when we got to speak and share opinions on the statement that was shown on the screens. I would recommend this because it could help people who don't speak as much, and would also help people to get an understanding of what a normal conference could be like. I agreed to go because I believed it could be a chance for me to speak out about certain topics. I was also encouraged by my brother who attended the same thing a couple of years back. My main takeaways were the amount of ideas different people can contribute to certain matters and how weighing up arguments would be crucial in the real world.

Epping Forest Parliamentary Debate 2023 Two of our year 10 students attended Chigwell School to take part in the parliamentary debate. We were given the task of opposing the motion that the “internet does more harm than good”. Both of our students performed excellently as they put forth well researched and considered ideas, articulated themselves in a clear manner and with grace and took interventions from the opposition (notably year 12 students from other schools) respectfully and professionally.

Although we did not win on this occasion, both students should be immensely proud of their contributions as they were amazing!

Student Write-up Epping Forest Parliamentary Debate 2023 The Epping Forest Parliamentary Debate was one of the most epic things I have ever done. For someone who has never done anything like this it was an experience I will forever remember. I adore public speaking and debating so this was right up my alley and I highly enjoyed it. The night started with each team’s first speaker giving their debate. One minute in we were allowed to intervene and in the final minute, all intervening stopped. It was a very different experience and highly serious but I still enjoyed myself and had fun. After everyone had gone we took a brief intermission where the judges made their decision. I was able to meet all the other debaters and had fun doing so. After the intermission was over we got the results. Sadly, we didn’t win, but we were definitely close. I will definitely be doing this again next year and can’t wait.

Student Absence If your child is unable to attend School for any reason, please report their absence by phoning the school number by 9.30am at the latest, you must also ring in each day of your child’s absence.

Holidays in Term Time The school does not authorise any holidays during term time except if the Headteacher deems it an exceptional circumstances. A ‘Leave of Absence’ form must be completed (these are available at Student Reception) detailing your exceptional circumstances.

Please be aware if the absence is not authorised and the holiday is taken, the case will be referred to the Local Authority who may issue a Penalty Notice for £120 (or £60 if paid within 21 days) to each parent for each child taken out of school.

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

Classroom How to Log on to Google Classroom?

Students can log into their Gmail using their school email address and their password. Their school email will be the year they started at RVHS started plus their first initial and surname @rodingvalley.net (example- 19plarkin@rodingvalley.net).

Once your child has have logged in, they will need to click on the google apps button and then select ‘Google Classroom’ Your child will then be able to see all of the classes they belong to. They will then need to click on the class they want to use resources for and take a look at everything that their class teacher has posted for them to work on. They will be able to download items and make comments on them. Teachers will be regularly posting new work on their Google Classrooms.

What to Do if your child is a Missing a Subject their Google Classroom?

If your child is missing a Google Classroom for one of their subjects, they will need to click on the addition symbol, followed by ‘Join Class’ and then enter the Class Code for their missing subject.

Class Codes are available from their subject teacher.

Top Tips for Our Students  Students must keep up to date with their lessons by using Google Classroom every day.  Use their workbooks to complete the work shown on their Google Classroom.  Don’t slack on presentation! Keep their notes in order of the lessons on the Google Classroom.  Year 11 and 13 Students: There will be revision materials available on Google Classroom. Please use them.

What is Seneca?

Seneca is a free home learning & revision platform that is very popular with our students. It is based on cognitive science, has adaptive learning and can be accessed by our students via their phones!

What Content is available to our Students through Seneca?

Seneca has resources available for KS3, KS4 and KS5 students that has been supplied to them from AQA, OCR, EdExcel Pearson and IGCSE. Our students will be able to access content designed for each of their subjects and also for their specific courses.

There is so much to choose from.

Some areas are even linked to the Exam Boards Course Specifications.
