Message from the Headteacher I hope that you all had a lovely half term break, despite the weather. Our school trips were an amazing success and all our students had a fantastic time. I would like to thank all of the staff that organised and supported these enrichment activities for the students.

On Monday, we held our Year 11 and 13 Parent Forum, where the topic of the evening was Revision and Study Skills, I would like to thank all of the parents that attended and hope that you were able to learn some useful strategies for supporting your child in the lead up to their exams, Thursday 5th March, this is our first Year 7 Parents Evening. Can I ask all Year 7 parents to remind your child about making appointments with all of their subject teachers.

In regards to the recent coverage on the news regarding the Coronavirus, I do appreciate any parents concern around this and ask you to refer to the communications and guidance sent out from the schools which are available on our website.

We are pleased to announce that we will be developing a partnership with Chelsea Football Club Foundation in offering a football development programme Post 16 combined with academic qualifications. This will be an amazing opportunity for our more sports focused students to enable them to continue their academic studies with us alongside developing their football skills.

With the weather forecast to remain cold, please can I remind parents that we will only close the school under exceptional circumstances. Our preference will be to put in place our severe weather protocol; details of our protocol are available on our school website , we will keep all parents up to date of any changes to the school day by posting on Twitter, emailing all parents or a message will be placed on school website.

Sixth Form Visit to Oxford On Tuesday 25th February, a group of Year 11 students visited Hertford College at Oxford University.

Upon arrival, students spectated the annual pancake race around the 'College Quad', watching as students tossed pancakes whilst running at top speed to win a trophy.

After learning about 'Life at Oxford', having a tour of the beautiful, traditional college as well as lunch in the Great Hall, students took part in an ethics seminar. A number of contentious issues were debated but opinions were most divided on the issue of 'Designer Babies'.

Students enjoyed the day and left the college full to the brim with pancakes and feeling enthused about their future in higher education.

Congratulations to Patsy Stow, Eren Tyler and Mia Ali for winning prizes at the Loughton Young Artist Competition 2020. On Thursday 13th February, they attended the prize giving and were rewarded with certificates from Loughton town Mayor and a gift bag kindly donated by Hobby Craft.

Mia Ali – Highly commended Well done to each of these girls in particular, but also to ALL of our Art GCSE and A Level students, who all contribute massively to make our department so successful. Your hard work is recognised by the staff and will be rewarded by the exam board!

Congratulations to Florence New, who achieved 3rd place in a National Writing Competition. Florence had to write a 2000word essay on eco-friendly travel.

Peter Littlewood, Director of the Young People’s Trust for the Environment wrote in his letter to Florence; “On behalf of YPTE and Eurostar, I would like to offer our congratulations to you on producing such an excellent piece of writing and some very strong arguments about responsible travel”.

On Friday 14th February, some of our KS4 students visited Barcelona with members of our MFL department. They had a fantastic time.

Over the February half term, students from Year 8 and 9 made the annual trip to Disneyland Paris organised by the Mathematics Department.

The trip was for three packed days of fun and activities.

On the first night, students had dinner at Buffalo Bills Wild West Show whilst watching a performance. The second day was spent at the Walt Disney Park, going on the many rides and watching the parades before ending the night with a spectacular fireworks display.

On the final day, students visited the Walt Disney Studio Park before departing back for home.

Thank you to Mr Rahman, Mr Edeko, Ms Smith, Ms Hollis and Ms Larkin for planning and taking the students to Disneyland.

The next trip due to take place over the February half term 2021 is in the planning stages. Letters have been emailed to parents of Year 7 and 8 students. If you would like your child to take part on the next trip, make sure to pay the deposit by Monday 16th March. The trip is always very popular and is expected to be oversubscribed!

We have asked a couple of our students to write about their experience: “Disney was a fantastic trip and a memory that we would never forget. The hotel rooms were so comfortable; we got to go in rooms with our friends!

There was enough time to go on many rides, parades and take in the amazing experience. The food was delicious, and the shows were very exciting, for example Buffalo Bills Wild West show! The audience got so involved with the act that it became even more exciting. We were the yellow team and had to keep cheering by swinging our cowboy hats around!

Our favourite experiences were the rides, which were scary and very exciting at the same time! It was so cool to see the Disney firework display and the castle lit up with a variety of everyone’s favourite movie!

We had a great time!

The rides were scary but fun at the same time especially Indiana Jones as we went on that rides three times! The village was very pretty with the view next to the hot air balloon.

“I am grateful I was able to go on the most magical experience at Disneyland Paris for my first time abroad. It was such an adventure; I had so much fun with my friends and the brilliant teachers who took time from their holiday to make this so special for not only me but everyone on the trip.

I have so many memories that I will never forget from Mr Rahman talking about his badges, Miss Larkin being scared to death on the Tower of Terror ride or when Mr Edeko and Miss Smith tried to do TikTok! The rides were amazing but also scary!

The trip home was fun with singing in the coach and selfies! All I can say is thank you so much for the opportunity. And also, the horses were beautiful!”

During half term 32 students in Year 10 and 11 visited Disneyland Paris and spent a day in Paris as well.

The visit included a river cruise along the Seine and under 22 bridges, up to the lookout of Tour Montparnasse, a trip to Louvre to see the Mona Lisa and a stop by the Eiffel Tower for some photos. We also spent a day and a half in and around the Disney Village and Parks.

A special thank you to Mrs Lasfer and Miss Sellears for giving up their half term to accompany the students with me.

During the February half term, 42 Year 9 students headed to Prato Nevoso in Italy for a week’s trip skiing. The group started their journey on Friday evening and after a lengthy journey of nearly 23 hours, we arrived in resort Saturday evening.

Sunday morning, students were up early for breakfast and then onto the Ski Fit centre to pick up their boots and skis for the week ahead. They then hit the slopes for their first day where students were split into their different ability groups; from those who have never skied up to the advanced group.

The student’s day consisted of having a wakeup call in the morning at 8.00am ready for breakfast at 9.00am.

The first session of skiing took place 11.00am until 13.00pm with a two-hour lunch break and then back on the slopes 15.00pm until 17.00pm giving them a total of 4 hour skiing each day with pupils took full advantage of. The skiing conditions were perfect with plenty of snow and bright sunny days.

During the evening, a variety of activities were put on after dinner including a trip down to the local town where students had the opportunity to stock up on their treats and buy souvenirs. We gave them plenty of time to relax with their friends around the hotel and spent one evening at a local Pizzeria.

Our final evening consisted of a Quiz night lead by the teachers and awards given out to those students who had impressed us throughout the week.

 Sophie Reed  Luke Rogerson  Cydney Spinoza  Harry Marcus  Ruby Curtis Our students were excellent the entire week; a credit to both themselves and Roding Valley and made impressive progress with their skiing ability; some of which started the week with never having placed their feet in Ski Boots to parallel skiing blue and red runs! We are very proud!

UKMAT Intermediate Maths Challenge 2020 On Thursday 6th February, our smartest and brightest mathematicians from Year 9, 10 and 11 students sat the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. 40 students from Year 9, 10 and 11 were awarded various certificates including two Gold, 10 Silver and 28 Bronze certificates. Joseph James was also awarded the Best in School and Year 9 certificate, Daniel Adigamov was Best in Year 10 and Trent Campbell was Best in Year 11. Skye Salek-Haddadi, in Year 9, along with Joseph are going through to the next round, the Grey Kangaroo!

Joseph and Skye were outstanding, both in Year 9 and both ranking 1 and 2 overall in the whole school!

We are looking forward to see how they perform in the Grey Kangaroo round and in future competition in the years to come!

Earlier this week, our Assistant Head Teacher, Ms Larkin, held a revision and study skills evening for parents and Year 11 and 13 students. During the session, students were given the opportunity to make cue cards, a great way to remember key facts and information, find out more about the Buzan Mind Map, an innovative revision technique, and learn how to use the Cornell Notes system, a unique way of note taking that supports revision.

The evening was also informative for parents who learned how to create and use a personalised learning checklist effectively, how best to navigate the exam board website, and how to find key resources, past papers and marking schemes.

We received lots of positive feedback following the evening and are confident that both students and parents left the evening armed with the skills and resources that they need ahead of the upcoming exams – good luck to all!

House Update Houses continue to rack up points from the numerous activities offered across the school.

Points last half term were awarded for the English Creative Writing Competition winners and top entrants. We also awarded points for the year 7 and 8 study skills days as students created Buzan Mind Maps to help them prepare for their exams.

The end of last half term saw the Year 12 Deputy House Captains lead on organising a year 7 Inter House Football tournament during lunch.

The deputies are continuing their efforts with a number of activities planned for this half term including an Inter House Basketball tournament and fundraising event to raise money for the House Charities.

To celebrate Science week in March, we are running a House competition on 'Discovery'.

Students will need to write a short story that includes a discovery. This needs to be no more than one side of A4.

All entries must go to Mrs Patel by Friday th 20 March. Remember to include your name, tutor group and House so you can get points!

Message from Miss Edwards I would like to welcome you all back after our half term break. I had the pleasure of spending period 6 on Friday, our last lesson of the half term with 7S, who enjoyed a special reward of an extended lunch for having the best attendance in that final week. It was such a lovely way to finish the half term. I look forward to continuing this reward over the next half term to celebrate those hardworking students who get themselves here every day, and on time.

This week’s Character & Culture theme was Discovery, which was a perfect way to introduce and promote British Science week. Students enjoyed a brilliant assembly, delivered by the outstanding Science department. Students saw some amazing experiments and heard about some famous scientists who have discovered amazing things that we now take for granted in our everyday lives. Next week's theme is Women's History Makers and I look forward to our students engaging in their period 1 lessons to learn about some of these inspiring women.

ARE (Aspiration, Respect, Endeavor) points are a way we use to reward students for showing outstanding attitudes during lessons. I would like to set a challenge to all students to try and gain at least 10 ARE Points a week. Currently, Warren S 7Q has the highest amount of ARE points, closing followed by Leo A 7U, Penelope C 7U, Bethany C 7S and Sonny B 7S. There will be a reward trip at the end of the school year for the students who are in the top 20 for ARE points. Well done to these students and to the rest of you, keep working hard to get yourself in contention for that exciting reward trip!

Next Thursday 5th March, we have our first Year 7 Parents Evening. Your child should have been making appointments with all of their subject teachers on your behalf. I am looking forward to meeting many of you and discussing the progress of your son/daughter.

Message from Mr Dobson All too often young people receive negative press and are collectively labelled in a negative way b ut what we see on a daily basis here at Roding Valley are polite young people who are proud to attend the High School and look after each other, themselves and their environment. Many of our students are active and keen learners with an appetite for learning.

As we approach Easter, the mornings and evenings are getting lighter, but the Weather hasn't started to feel warmer...yet. I still encourage students to continue to bring a coat with them to school. Although our blazers are good quality and empathise the importance of showing everyone that they are a member of RVHS, a coat to wear to and from school is essential. Since temperatures during this time of the year can often fall below 5c during the journey to and from school and the wind chill can bring that closer to freezing, a coat is essential. A child who arrives at school in the morning warm will be a keen and happy learner.

In the next few weeks reports will be due with the progress grades based on the students' recent examinations and on March 31 there is a Careers Drop Down Day for Year 8 only. Further information will appear in future editions of the parents’ bulletin.

Message from Miss Williams Our Year 9 students have continued to take on the challenge of taking responsibility in their stride and had a really positive last half term, for which they should be very proud. This is an important milestone in their education; for the first time they will make academic subject choices that will begin to impact and shape their future life. Choosing their GCSEs is the beginning of the next stage of their academic career, preparing them for apprenticeships, A levels and University degrees which in time will lead to employment. Choosing their options is a serious decision, and they need to make it sensibly.

There are a number of things that they will need to consider when making these important decisions: 

Does the subject interest me?



Will this subject lead to an A level that I would like to study?



Does this subject link to a course I want to study at University or a career that I wish to pursue?



Do I have an aptitude for this subject?



Do I enjoy the subject?

Please remind your child to base their subject choices on the sort of questions above, not on whether their friends are doing it, or because of a particular teacher. Encourage them to discuss their option choices with their teachers and their Form Tutor because they know their particular skills and talents and can give helpful advice. The demands of GCSE study are significant and very much the start of an educational experience that require commitment, hard work and a good attitude to learning. I encourage you to also discuss with your child, in depth so they are fully aware of the demands and expectations at this time.

Please remember that Option Forms must be completed by Friday March the 6th and returned to Student Reception. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this process in more detail, please make sure you contact the relevant Subject Teachers, Form Tutors, myself, Mr Warry or Mr Mammen.

Introducing Mr Warry I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, I will be working very closely with students within Year 9 and I am excited to be able to share my wealth of experience with students at this critical point in the RVHS journey.

This is an exciting time for me as I am spending time getting to know the students, putting names to faces and helping them make their time at RVHS the best it can possibly be.

So far, I am very happy to see students within Year 9 making some great progress academically and also working hard to raise the number of achievement points gained. It has also been nice to see our students taking their options process seriously and making time to have very mature conversations with their teachers and peers.

Message from Mr Ryan Welcome back after what I hope has been a relaxing and restful half term. Before we broke up for half term, I was able to award Ayse Ibrahim with her award for being the best Creative Writer in Year 10. It is always a pleasure to acknowledge those students who really do exceptionally well.

I am really pleased to be announcing that Daniel Mehir has been invited to the House of Lords to meet Lord Randell to discuss the Climate Change Commission, which is something he has been leading on in the Epping Forest Youth Council.

We now have students putting themselves forward for the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge. Every year Roding Valley do amazingly well and I am fairly certain looking at the students who have put themselves forward that we have a winner in this group of contestants.

As I have mentioned before, being able to put extracurricular activities on your CV is something that our students need to be able to do, as it will help them to stand out when applying for colleges. Another thing that future employers are interested in happens to be attendance and now that we are in to the second half of Year 10 I can't stress enough how important it is that our students are in school every day.

Message from Miss Reed Welcome back to Y11 after the half term break where I am confident students have been working hard and revising for the set of PPE's which students are currently taking. These will go on until the end of next week and are the last set of mock exams before May. Students are currently really focused on their revision which is so great to see as they move into the final part of Year 11.

Student Absence If your child is unable to attend School for any reason, please report their absence by phoning the school number by 9.30am at the latest, you must also ring in each day of your child’s absence.

0208-508-1173 On their return to School, please ensure your child brings with them a letter . or medical evidence if requested explaining the reason for the absence for our records.

Medical Appointments Please make sure you make any medical or dental appointments outside of school time. If this is not possible then please try to ensure that your child attends before and/or after their appointment.

Holidays in Term Time It is not school policy to authorise any holidays during term time except in exceptional circumstances. A ‘Leave of Absence’ form must be completed (these are available at Student Reception) should you require leave for your child, a letter detailing your exceptional circumstances should accompany it.

Please be aware if the absence is not authorised and the holiday is taken, the case may be referred to the Education Welfare Service who may issue a Penalty Notice for £120 (or £60 if paid within 21 days) to each parent for each child taken out of school.
