Welcome to the last Parent Bulletin of 2019!

It has been an amazing year for our school; we have celebrated our ‘best ever GCSE results’, had record numbers join our Sixth Form and apply to become part of our school community, participated in and won numerous local and national competitions in debating, sport and drama, had record numbers of students engaged in extended leadership, enrichment opportunities, and a full programme of House events. Roding Valley High School is in a strong and exciting position and I look forward to 2020 with great enthusiasm and optimism. As a school community, we are lucky to have such excellent and committed staff, I trust that when you read the rest of the bulletin you will gain a sense of our amazing students and the excellent opportunities that we have at Roding Valley High School.

You will find attached to this bulletin, a copy of our festive edition of our student magazine ‘RVHS Exposed’ As the weather has turned very cold, I must mention our alternative arrangements in the case of severe weather. If heavy snow or other severe weather results in dangerous conditions, I may decide not to open the school. We will announce this through two platforms:  Roding Valley High School website  Twitter I will always aim to make a decision by 6.45am but clearly every situation is unique and it may not be possible to make the decision by this time. I would really urge you to follow the school on twitter. The school twitter account, which apart from updating you during inclement weather, is great for keeping up to date with all the news and exciting events that happen at the school on a daily basis.

The last day of term is Thursday 19 December 2019. School finishes at the end of Period 4 (12.20pm) for all students. There will not be lunch served but normal food arrangements will be available at break time. Students that are eligible for free school meals will be able to use their allowance at break time. Students should return to school at 8.35am on Tuesday 7th January 2020.

On Tuesday 3rd December, we presented a Winter Concert in the main hall. A couple of months before, the auditions were available to all Years, starting with the Year 7s’ first.

There would be small practices every day of the week. I was put in a group with three other girls, who soon later became my friends. At first, I thought about if I had made the right decision by joining the concert. Later on, I decided that it was the best idea I’d ever had. On the big day, everyone felt like they were fine, but at first, I felt like I was going to mess up.

Once we were led to the main hall, we had to wait for our turn, and then go up. I was really nervous, but that is normal when you are about to perform. When it was finally my groups’ turn, I just wanted to say, “You know what?

Never mind, I’m out! Not doing this today, thank you very much. I’ll just come back when I feel like it, which will be, oh, I don’t know, 20 years? Ok, thanks! Bye!” But this was maybe my only chance to do this. I stepped up on stage, and sang. Once I was off stage, all I wanted to do was get back on again! Also, I got to see many other people perform and made loads of friends. All I can say is that it was the best experience I’ve had involving music so far. I couldn’t ask for anything better, because this would be the best one.

It was a fantastic event with a record number of guests in attendance.

Yesterday, RVHS held a whole school election alongside the national general election. We anonymised the party manifestos and gave students the choice of voting for the Leopard Party, Rhino Party, Buffalo Party, Elephant Party and Lion party. This ensured students really thought about what values and manifesto promises they were voting for. We were really pleased that got this encouraged debate across the school and hopefully got students thinking about how they might vote in the future.

Results:

5th place = Leopard (Labour) - 156 4th place = Rhino (Green) - 181 3rd place = Buffalo (Brexit) - 194 2nd place = Lion (Conservative) - 263 1st place = Elephant (Lib Dems) – 307

A special thank you to some sixth formers who demonstrated skills in organisation, and communication, coupled with maturity in helping us coordinate this event: Florence New, Livvy Turnbull, Haaris Bashir, Sam Heal, Anna Felizardo, Salena Malik, Jack Swift, Baxter Garrod, Will Cockayne, Twinkle Plowman.

These students created resources for lower students, to help them understand the process and what they were voting for. They also organised the whole school at our “polling station” so they cast their vote efficiently and fairly. Well done!

The annual Young Chef Competition was held in the Food and Nutrition department on12th December 2019. There were 15 participants from Years 7-9. They made amazing dishes to include vegetable stir fry, Vegan Tart, Lasagne, Bolognese, Sweet and Sour Chicken and Burgers. The judges had a very difficult time selecting the winners. We would like to congratulate Louisa Nicholson for taking first place for impressing The judges with her delicious vegan tart served with salad.

The second place winner was Tylan Sami for his burger meal served with homemade chips. I would like to thank all of our participants, parents and judges for their continued support.

On Monday 9th of December we embarked on a riveting journey to one of the most iconic cities in Europe, known for its rich culture, vibrant shopping industry (both upmarket and downmarket) and its signature Christmas Market, allowing one to be engrossed in the festivities, Lille.

We began our quest at early morn where we ventured to the border in the coach, here we crossed the English Channel upon which we arrived in Calais.

We then began our proceedings to the aforementioned location upon which we endured and gazed upon some of the most detailed and intricate architecture one has ever seen.

Here we arrived at a highly renowned and somewhat familiar location, Westfields. This combined the upstream plethora of shops found in the UK with a quaint French twist enrolling small market stalls and bakeries alike. A truly remarkable fusion to say the least. This enabled us to solidify our understanding of the language in a comfortable environment making basic conversation where possible.

We then ventured to a small shopping district enveloping miniature artisan shops truly capturing the essence of the culture. We then made our way to the Christmas market, engulfed in a hearty smog encapsulating the rich aromatic scents of roasted nuts, pretzels, Spiced wine, fresh bread, cakes, chocolates, I could go on. Here, the language skills we had been perfecting all this time were finally put into practice in a tense, unknown environment.

This provided us insight on the true nature of foreign communication.

The end grew ever nigh.

We then began our voyage back home.

On the 11th to 12th of December, we performed A Christmas Carol. Auditions were in September, so we had plenty of time to rehearse and sort out lines, tech and costumes. Everyone who auditioned did get a part, but some were in the ensemble (they had a non-speaking part) because there weren’t enough speaking parts.

When rehearsals started, everyone was using scripts and we were mostly just working on stage positioning and line learning. It was more fun like this because everything was calm and there was no real rush. As it got closer to the actual show, we were having to sort out props (which Mrs Walker made), lighting and going on stage without a script. Our first performance was a dress rehearsal in front of St John’s year fives, a few mistakes were made but overall it was very good; I was quite nervous to do it, but I was more nervous about our first proper performance in front of parents and other adults.

This show was a lot better because everyone learnt from their mistakes and it was overall much better. On Wednesday we had the whole day rehearsing, so we had no lessons, I really enjoyed that day. Altogether, it was a very enjoyable experience and I made a few friends in the process.

Being in shows at school, can build confidence and it can help in the future.

Today we supported the Children in Need appeal and asked staff and Sixth Formers to wear Christmas jumpers for a donation of £2. We also ran this as a house competition in order to see how much support we can get from each house. There were some brilliant designs on show.

House Food Bank Appeal Earlier this week saw the close of House Food Bank Appeal. I would like to thank the entire Roding Valley High School community in their support of the appeal. Our Sixth Form House Captains and Deputies supported Mr Price and Ms Dyer in delivering the food items on Wednesday.

If you recall the last House update, you’ll remember that I asked you to vote for your favourite design of the food appeal boxes. I can confirm that the Roding Valley High School community have voted Pankhurst House’s box design as their favourite. I have therefore awarded 50 house points to Pankhurst house. Murray house came 2nd so have been awarded 40 house points. Churchill came 3rd and have been awarded 30 points, whilst Hawking receive 20 and Rendell receive 10.

Once again, a big thank you for all your support.

House Photography Competition This term’s House Photography Competition has come to a close. Ms Costello had a tough decision to make but has awarded winners and prizes as follows:  1st prize: Dolly Curtis (Churchill)  2nd prize: Luke Smith (Rendell)  3rd prize: Scott Kenealy (Murray) I have awarded House points to these students with 1st place winning 50 house points, 2nd place winning 40 and 3rd place winning 30.

Next term’s House Photography Competition focuses on Nature.

On the last day of this term, Thursday 19th December, the houses have arranged a Non-Uniform Day in support of their chosen charities. House captains and Deputies will be collecting money at the gate into house coloured buckets. Once the totals are in, I will again be awarding house points for the most generous houses. A letter explaining this in more detail has gone out separately.

The wonderful staff at our school have arranged a wide range of House activities for the next half-term.

Activities planned include an MFL Spelling Bee, Science Week Poster Design through to Poetry competitions and much much more.

Here Are A Few Highlights This Term: House Competitions This term has been filled with house events and competitions from across the faculties. We’ve had History running events to design witch potions, photography competitions, PE football, netball & basketball events, Computer Science policy poster and Vodafone Digital Creators competitions. Art ran the ever-popular Loughton Town Council backed ‘Design a Christmas Card’ event and whole school wise we’ve all done our bit by trying to be part of the House that recycles the most.

Rewards We believe that our students should be honored for possessing the character traits of respect, integrity, responsibility and kindness. To show our recognition we have introduced a character and culture weekly award. We currently have had 55 students achieve this award which is truly amazing!

Students had the opportunity to give back to the wider community in helping out at the open day for house points as well as the annual house food bank appeal donations.

Tolani Aradeon and Vienna Igwe were also delighted to be the first ever Character Cup award winners, congratulations to you both!

Careers

PiXL Edge

Students have been working on their Step Up programme this starts in Year 7 and continues through to Year 11. This programme enables students to understand more about their self, know where to look for useful information and plan for their future. In Year 9 students focus on planning for the future which includes their option choices. During Careers Week Apprenticeships were the theme and students were able to find out fully how apprenticeships work and the companies that offer them.

We have got off to a very positive start to the year leading PiXL assemblies and workshops, continuing to develop and accredit students with those personal attributes essential for employability and life. We currently have 74% of our students having completed their leadership award. PiXL edge has been a fantastic tool for tracking and rewarding students who meet these skills, this will look great on their CV’s!

Challenge and Enrichment Our new and exciting enrichment timetable has been a big success with many students engaging in after school activities such as science club, drama, pottery, computer aided design and a variety of sporting activities. Our enrichment opportunities are available for all Year groups and centres around offering your child an opportunity to take up a new activity they have never tried before or to develop their skills in a particular area. Students from Year 9 have made an excellent contribution to our School Magazine. Students have gained many skills preparing the magazine. They are a lovely team that is a credit to RVHS. Joseph James you are an excellent editor!

The Debate Club The Debate Club has been a lively space this year with members from Year 7-13. As we come to the end of the term, the debate club and competitions that we have entered not only has given us much experience, but some good topics explored. Developing opinions and arguments about the world around us has been exhilarating to experience.

A very well done to you all for your hard work. Have a restful and well deserved break!

Ms Garip Challenge and Enrichment

Guest Speakers and Assemblies We have focussed on a variety of themes this term including mental health and well-being, personal safety, careers and human rights.

Students have left period one and assemblies with a greater understanding of how to strive to be the best they can be whilst understanding more about the world around them.

One guest speaker has stood out for our students, Christine Whetstone from Amnesty international was able to provide our students with the opportunity to engage and immerse themselves in a human rights workshop. It was a thought provoking and inspiring session which has led to lots of passionate responses regarding how everyone should be treated fairly and not discriminated against because of the country they work or live in. It has also given our students an excellent opportunity to be thankful for what they have and to develop an understanding of equality.

A great notion to take with them into the Christmas period!

Message from Miss Edwards I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Year 7 Progress Leader and share my excitement about working with this wonderful bunch of young people. I have spent my first 2 weeks in the job getting to know many of our delightful year 7's, learning names, matching faces with siblings who I've been lucky enough to teach over the last few years and generally having a great time.

I have been delighted to hear about and witness some impressive individual efforts across the school which fills me with excitement and enthusiasm regarding the potential of this cohort to do great things!

I had the pleasure of attending the Winter Concert last week, fantastically coordinated by our Music department. The talent that was on display was outstanding. I would like to give a special mention to the lovely Year 7's who fought their nerves to give brilliant performances. Archie Savage and Jennifer Cuison, with a beautiful rendition of All of Me, and Lucie Marks, Ava Rawlinson and Tiffany Hansen who performed Flashlight.

I was also lucky enough to watch a performance of The Christmas Carol this week and witnessed some great acting by our Year 7s. Another special shout out to Tessa Vignere, John Harper, Tiffany Hansen, Finn Nicholson, Jennifer Cuison, Elsie Thomas, Anthony Dean, Louisa Nicolson, Liam Smith and Daisy Warden who all performed exceptionally. Well done to all of those students who performed in both shows; I can't wait to see more of you over the coming years.

It has been wonderful to hear about all of the sporting success over the last couple of weeks for our year 7s.

The girls Under 12 Football team had a fantastic 7-1 victory over Harris Academy Beckenham in their first round of the National Cup. The boys Under 12 Football team have had some mixed results in their recent Essex Cup matches. They beat The Forest School 6-1, but unfortunately went down to Great Baddow 2-5.

Nojus S, William E, Sonny C and Bailey A competed in a dodgeball and orienteering tournament at Debden Park last week and had a great time.

Well done to all those involved. I would also like to remind students about all of the fantastic extracurricular activities that the school offers and I encourage you all to get involved in as much as you can.

Message from, Mr Dobson Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended our Year 8 Parents Evening - it was a great success and highlighted the progress made by the vast majority of the students in Year 8 since September.

I would like to remind all Year 8 students that the next group of examinations start week beginning February 3rd 2020.

Well done to all students in Year 8 who do the right things and meet the high expectations that we all have on a daily basis. If the attitude is right then progress and achievement will follow.

As the longest term of the year draws to a close I want to wish everyone a restful and enjoyable Christmas. As I often say to the students in assemblies I'm always blown away by how many different opportunities are on offer for the students at Roding Valley High School and you'll see from this bumper Christmas edition that students appreciate the time and effort put in by their staff. We will be celebrating the end of term with our honours assemblies next week where we will reward and recognise the students for their hard work and progress in lessons as well as their excellent attendance over the term. I would also like to say a special thank you to the Year 8 Tutor team who are an outstanding group of teachers to work with.

I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Christmas and I look forward to hitting the ground running again in January 2020.

Message from Miss Williams It’s hard to believe that we are now at the end of our first term back at school. As the year draws to a close, we can reflect on what has been a very busy start to Year 9 from trips to Malta and France to Revision Skills Drop Down Days, Crime Prevention Drop Down Days and Drama and Music performances.

I want to firstly congratulate our Year 9 students who have shown exceptional commitment to their learning this term, studying extremely hard for their exams. Their conduct during this time was commented on by many teachers as exceptional. I understand this can be a stressful time for students however it was evident that students had prepared themselves and kept positive and resilient throughout.

When they have their exams marked and returned it is imperative that students analyse their exam papers to see which topic areas are their strengths and weaknesses. It would be great, as parents, if you could ask your son/daughter what areas these are as a way of supporting your child’s education. Please also contact their teachers directly for clarity and advice on how best to do this after you have received their report.

Please look out for our next bulletin after Christmas where you will find a celebration of our year 9 students of the term including winning a subject award, tutor award, attendance, attitude to learning, progress and many more!

Our students are looking forward to a restful but exciting festive period knowing that when they return, they will be one step closer to that allimportant time of choosing their options. Please note down the 23rd January which is Year 9 Parents Evening and the 13th February which is Options Evening. This will be a good opportunity to discuss with your child’s teachers their options and further information on how to best support them.

So, all that remains is for me to wish all our year 9 students a very happy and peaceful Christmas and I look forward to seeing them all return refreshed and eager to learn in the New Year.

Congratulations to Joseph James (Year 9), who has had his article, ‘Are Film Remakes a Good Thing?’ published on a double spread in the national Film Stories Junior magazine. It accompanies the independent Film Stories magazine, which is released monthly.

Joseph had to submit his article proposal to the editor Simon Brew and luckily the idea was accepted! Now a published, young critic, we hope to see more from Joseph as the surge of new films are released, and hopefully he will inspire future student critics!

Message from Mr Ryan It is the end of 2019 and the end of the first term as Year 10 students. It has been long and difficult but with 2020 just around the corner I hope we can build on the successes of this term and push ourselves further next term.

It was lovely to see Cai Gunning and Leah Thomas perform in the school's production of A Christmas Carol. On that note, the production from an external company was well received by Year 10. This has really helped them understand what they have been reading in English.

It was a privilege to watch three of our students 'pass-out' at Waltham Abbey Fire Station as part of the Firebreak Course.

Demi Hoffman, Monty Ellis McNamara and Rhys Brown all did exceptionally. All three feel that the first aid course that they have all passed was the best learning experience that they could have.

Message from Miss Reed It has been an extremely busy term for our Year 11 students as we approach the end of the Autumn Term. The first set of PPE's are completed where students conducted themselves fantastically through this period. Year 11 School Reports are being sent out on Friday 13th December. This is now a prime opportunity for students to assess where their strengths lie and the subject areas they need to continue working on to reach their target grades. The next set of PPE's will be after February Half Term; the week commencing 24th February 2020.

Year 11 students should now also be thinking about the next steps of their journey whether it is applying to the Sixth Form here at Roding Valley, gaining an apprenticeship or applying to College. It is important that pupils are starting to think about the application process and make applications to their chosen choices. Our on-site careers officer Mrs Mason is here to help students who are unsure of their next steps.

I would like to congratulate Year 11 students on their progress and attitude so far this year and encourage them to continue with this positivity moving into the Spring Term. This will ensure they reach the grades that they deserve at the end of the year.

Student Absence If your child is unable to attend School for any reason, please report their absence by phoning the school number by 9.30am at the latest, you must also ring in each day of your child’s absence.

0208-508-1173 On their return to School, please ensure your child brings with them a letter . or medical evidence if requested explaining the reason for the absence for our records.

Medical Appointments Please make sure you make any medical or dental appointments outside of school time. If this is not possible then please try to ensure that your child attends before and/or after their appointment.

Holidays in Term Time It is not school policy to authorise any holidays during term time except in exceptional circumstances. A ‘Leave of Absence’ form must be completed (these are available at Student Reception) should you require leave for your child, a letter detailing your exceptional circumstances should accompany it.

Please be aware if the absence is not authorised and the holiday is taken, the case may be referred to the Education Welfare Service who may issue a Penalty Notice for £120 (or £60 if paid within 21 days) to each parent for each child taken out of school.
