Message from the Head of School I am absolutely delighted to announce that Mr. Murray, long serving teacher at Roding Valley High School has been appointed to be the Loughton Town Mayor for the civic year 2018/19. As a school community we could not be more proud of our very own Mr. Murray, he has worked in the town’s schools for over 37 years, there is not a better qualified person to represent the people.

Keeping the celebrations within school, his cake was made by our food teacher, Mrs. Abbott I am sure that you will join me in wishing him every success and look forward to him attending school functions in his capacity as the Mayor.

I have this week sent home a letter reminding parents about the uniform expectations. The uniform is generally exemplary but I do not want this to slip. Please do check the length of the girls skirts, they should be worn below the knee. There has also been a slight rise in the number of students wearing trainers, leather style shoes are the only footwear permitted. Please can you support the school and ensure that all students are in perfect uniform on Monday 4th June.

Roding Valley students have access to two amazing brand new 3G pitches for sporting activities. To maintain the condition and longevity of the 3G pitches, students must wear astros or moulded trainers, any other footwear can damage the surface. These guidelines cannot be waved and where students do not have the correct footwear then they are not able to participate. Please can I ask parents to ensure that the students have the correct astros or moulded trainers. Inexpensive pairs can be purchased from Sports Direct or Amazon, but if you are experiencing financial hardship then please do contact me directly at the school. I would not want any student to be disadvantaged or not able to enjoy the opportunities offered. Students do make use of the pitches in PE lessons, at lunch times and clubs.

The external exams have been going really well this week. The students appear confident, well prepared and organised. Each day the canteen has been crammed with students for breakfast revision sessions. The students should make the most of the time over half term to continue their revision. Please do note that the school is open and running a full programme of GCSE/ A level revision for targeted and invited students. The schedule can be found later in the bulletin. I am always proud of our committed teachers, who really go the extra mile for our students.

We said good-bye to our Year 13 students this week, we will see them after the half term when their exams start but they officially start their study leave today. Today they enjoyed a lovely BBQ in the Science garden, thank you to our resident cook, Mr Naidoo.

Please enjoy the rest of the bulletin as it provides a real flavour of the activities and celebrations in school on a weekly basis. Please note our DEAR time reviews written by Year 7 students and this week we invited Year 5 students in from Whitebridge Primary to enjoy an afternoon of Harry Potter wizardry. We have planned a full programme with our local primaries and these events will happen in the summer term.

With Whitebridge Primary On Tuesday 22nd May; Whitebridge Primary students were treated to an afternoon of Harry Potter with our School Librarian Julia Martin. It was a brilliant afternoon and fun was had by all.

Social Media and Gaming Talk Our Year 7 and 8 students were fortunate to welcome Dr. Thomas Dannhauser; a Psychiatrist and CEO of Smart Start Minds. Smart Start Minds aims to give every child the key thinking skills that will enable them to find and fulfil their full potential in life.

Dr. Dannhauser discussed how social media and gaming can be potentially harmful and what the negative signs and long term effects are such as poor concentration and memory. Dr Dannhauser explained how we can prevent these consequences and equipped our students with strategies to improve their concentration, cognitive abilities and well-being.

In Years 7 - 9 pupils Drop Everything and Read for 20 minutes in every school day.

Strong literacy is key to success in all subject areas and reading each day promotes this. Reading regularly improves spelling, punctuation and grammar, all of which are assessed in a number of subject areas on the new 9-1 specifications.

We also want to encourage a love of reading for pleasure and have asked our Year 7s to write book reviews to share with you what they are reading during DEAR Time. This week we feature 3 reviews from 7S. Enjoy!

During DEAR time, I have been reading ‘Beyond the Bright Sea’ by Lauren Wolk. This book is about Crow, a 10 year old girl who was discovered by Osh on a beach. She carried 3 things: a piece of wet paper, a birthmark in the shape of a feather and a small basket which she lay in. Living on the Elizabeth Islands with Osh and Miss Maggie, a close friend, she sees a fire on the neighbouring island and vows to find whoever sent to live on this Island. But is it more trouble than its worth?

I enjoyed this book because it beautifully creates a feeling of wonder, wanting to find out where Crow comes from. The islands they in look brilliant and create a sense of family, with everyone working together to create a place anyone would call home.

My favourite character is Osh because of how nice and kind he is to Crow, and how he takes care of her firmly, but fairly. I also like how he often comforts Crow when things start to go downhill.

I would give it a 3.5/5

During DEAR Time, I have been reading a book called ‘The Recruit’ by Robert Muchamore.

This book is about a boy called James whose mum dies and is separated from his sister Lauren Choke.

He is sent to a place called Cherub where he is sent to complete a few missions and he would do anything to see his sister and get his stepdad into prison. Near the end he almost dies but luckily, he doesn’t, and he finally gets Lauren back.

I enjoyed this book because it is really interesting and includes a lot of twists and techniques.

I would give it a 5/5!

During DEAR time, I have been reading Deepwater by Lu Hersey.

This book is about a young adult, Dannielle, whose parents are split up, one day her mum disappears.

Danni explains the situation to her dad. The police are told and go for a search. One afternoon, the police find a woman’s body.

Could it really be Danni’s mum?

I enjoy this book because it’s adventurous and imaginative and has lots of twists & turns.

I would give it a 5/5!

With the launch of our 3rd generation pitch, we need to ensure that these pitches are maintained following the Governing body guidelines and insist that pupil’s wear Astro’s or moulded stud boots when using the facility.

Year 9 students need to pay for the GCSE bundle (exam texts and theatre performances) so that we can the GCSE exam texts as soon as we return from the May half term. Thanks to all who have already done so. All students who have paid by Friday will get their first exam text in the first lesson. If students are providing their own text or using a sibling's text, they need to remember it for their first English lesson after half term.

The Year 10 Hospitality and Catering students visited the Westminster Kingsway college in London on 22nd May. They took part in a pasta making lesson, making Tortellini with ricotta and sage filling.

The students then had a tour of the college; which included a chocolate room, bakery, butchery and restaurant. The students also had a two-course meal consisting of seared chicken breast, savoy cabbage and creamy mash. The dessert was strawberry and white chocolate mousse.

One student commented that the meal was divine, another said that the restaurant was ‘posh’ and the staff were friendly and welcoming.

Year 11 Message from Mr. Dobson The exam season has now kicked in for Years 11 and I've been really impressed with the professional and mature manner in which the students have sat their exams.

Can I remind all students and families to double and triple check examination timetables so everyone knows what dates and times they need to be ready for.

RVHS Sixth Form Year 13 Year 13, we just wanted to say thank you for the past two years, and that we continue to be proud of each and every one of you. We hope you spend the last few weeks wisely preparing for your final examinations. We look forward to seeing you at the Leavers Assembly at 10:00am on Tuesday 3rd July, and of course the Summer Ball in the evening. We hope you enjoyed Friday’s Sixth Form BBQ, it was our way to say thank you.

At RVHS, we use Show My Homework; an account has been created for you to keep up to date with your child’s homework progress from home.

What is ‘Show My Homework’?

Show my Homework is a simple online solution for students and parents to view homework details and upcoming deadlines. Mobile apps and notifications ensure you always know what homework your child has and when it’s due.

How to Log In?  Go to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/pin What are PINs? PINs are unique codes that ‘Show My Homework’ has assigned to each parent that allow us to confirm their identity on initial login. After logging in for the first time users will be asked to provide more memorable login details for future use.

PINs are then only be used as a backup in case you forget these logins.

 Or you can download the app.  Enter your PIN details that you have been given in the letter provided by your school.  Click ‘Log in’  Create a memorable password and enter your email address then click ‘Update you details’.

Students do not need a pin to be able to access their homework. They can gain access to their Show My Homework account though their Gmail account.

You are now able to access your account and view all the homework that has been set for your child.

Whatis DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum.

Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature.

Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned.

These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively.

We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.

MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school.

We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place.

You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us.

The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left.
