A shorter Bulletin this week as we have a four day week.

I would like to start by relating the events of Friday evening where Roding Valley hosted the annual Epping Forest District Parliamentary Debate. The event was presided over by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt Hon Eleanor Laing, and a team of well qualified judges, luminaries from the local community. There was an excellent turn out from the local schools but it was lovely to see that Roding had the most support as the home side.

The motion to be debated was "Does the House believe that Britain will have a greater role in world affairs after leaving the EU?". The standard of the speakers was very high but I am delighted to say that Zoe Donnelly and Lorelei Booth performed exceptionally well. They spoke with calm authority and humour, showing huge maturity and a tremendous knowledge of the subject area. Their preparation was superb and this allowed them to intervene with pertinent points when the students from the other schools spoke.

When the judges eventually returned from the ruminations the strong pair from Epping St John were declared the winners although I certainly felt that Zoe and Lorelei at least matched their performance throughout the evening.

West Hatch were given second place which was a bit of a surprise but I was thrilled that Zoe was named "Highly Commended" for her speech and received a well deserved prize. The judges particularly enjoyed her comparing Britain in the EU to starting a net flix account to enjoy the first 30 days free before forgetting to cancel it.

All in all a very good evening. I would like to thank Mr Pununge and Mrs Musker for supporting the students preparation and Mr Murray for his work in planning the event. Finally a big thank you to everyone, from all those in attendance to Pat Henrye for her superb catering.

Finally I would like to congratulate Mr Harris who has been seconded onto the Senior Leadership Team as Acting Assistant Headteacher. I wish him every success in the role.

Working individually you are asked to prepare a healthy one course main meal suitable for two people The cost of the ingredients should not exceed ÂŁ6.00 You will be expected to work from a time plan. Marks will be given for this, flavour and texture of the final meal.

You may use convenience foods but credit will be given for cooking skills (eg. Making you own pastry, bread, sauces, etc.)

You will have a 1 ½ hour time limit

3.10pm-4.10pm Loughton Town Council Xmas Card Competition Winners There were over 280 entries to the annual Xmas card competition and, again, Roding Valley have scooped the Secondary Schools section winner and runner up!

Winner - Finnley Packwood 7R Runner Up - Scarlett Downie 7X There is now an exhibition of a selection of entries, including the winners and runners up at Loughton library from 28 Nov to 11 Dec and then at Debden library from 15 Dec to 3 Jan Thank you to the many students who entered the competition and congratulations to our winners!

YEAR 9 PARENTS/GUARDIANS Please be aware that formal assessments will be taking place for all Year 9 students week beginning 28th November 2016. Your son/daughter will be issued with their individual timetable showing assessment/dates/times/rooms/seat number personal to them, during registration next week. Timetables have been printed on BRIGHT YELLOW paper. A copy will also be emailed to each student and parent/guardians. Please also see below a generic overview of the assessments taking place.

The Science Department Dishwasher has “given up the ghost� and a new one is desperately needed. If you have, or know of anyone who has, a dishwasher they are getting rid of with some life left in it, please can you contact the Science Technicians? Thank you.

The Barcelona trip, due to run in the May 2017 half term, open to year 10 Business students has had to be cancelled due to low numbers expressing interest.

Access to Water in School Parents, please be aware that the canteen has jugs of water available both during lunchtime and break time for all students to access.

Bottled water is sold at all outlets Large bottle 50p Small bottle 25p If a student is overdrawn or has no money on their lunch account, they will always be sold water.

They have been exploring some difficult issues and have discussed, explored and performed with sensitivity. They are demonstrating excellent maturity and use of dramatic techniques.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS…..

Student Absence If your child is unable to attend School for any reason then please report their absence by phoning the school number by 9.30am, you must also ring in each day of your child’s absence.

020 8508 1173 On their return to School please ensure your child brings with them a letter or medical evidence if requested explaining the reason for the absence for our records.

Medical Appointments When possible please make sure you make any medical or dental appointments outside of school time. If this is not possible then please try to ensure that your child attends before and/or after their appointment Holidays in Term Time It is not school policy to authorise any holidays during term time except in exceptional circumstances. If you put in a holiday request a ‘Leave of Absence’ form must be completed (these are available at Student Reception). Please be aware if the absence is not authorised and the holiday is taken, the case may be referred to the Education Welfare Service who may issue a Penalty Notice for £120 (or £60 if paid within 21 days) to each parent for each child taken out of school.
