For example, if only 7 percussionists are available, 6 should cover Timpani and Perc. 1-5, but the 7th could play any part 6-10.
Notes about the Brazilian percussion: For all percussion parts, the Brazilian instruments are preferred if they can be procured, but instruments that are more commonly found (in the USA at least) that may be used as substitutes are listed in parentheses. -Apito: a samba whistle where two or three different pitches can be produced by closing one or two holes. A referee whistle could be used in it's place if two pitches can be produced, or two referee whistles of different pitches. -Repinique: a tenor drum with a strap for portability. Played with a wooden stick in the right hand, which may be the butt end of a snare or tenor stick, and the left hand used for slaps. -Caxixi: a shaker played like other shakers, although accents can be created by hitting the beans on the hard bottom as opposed to on the sides of the basket. Two of them can also be played together as a pair. -Reco-reco: scraped like a guiro, but often made of metal with springs. -Surdo: a bass drum with a strap for portability. They come in various sizes and in samba are usually used as a set of three. They are played with their own surdo beaters that can also be made cheaply: http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-your-own-drumsurdo-beaters/ -Agog么 Bells: I believe these are common enough to find in the US, but these connected bells could be replaced by two cowbells of different pitches mounted on a single portable rack or pole. -Caixa: essentially a snare drum, with a strap for portability. -Timbau: played with the hands like a Djembe, with a strap for portability. -Chocalho: a shaker constructed of rows of jingles. Played like a shaker, and could be replaced with jingle sticks or a shaken tambourine. -Tamborim: a small frame drum that in samba is usually played by a flexible plasic beater of threads bound together. For instruction on how to play these instruments, see Michael de Miranda's instructional videos on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/mdm2230

Program notes: Uma Passacalha Brasileira for Wind Ensemble was commissioned by the Arrowhead Union High School Wind Ensemble, conducted by Jacob T. Polancich, in Hartland, WI. I began the piece in the late fall of 2014 and did the vast majority of the composing in early 2015, completing the work in mid-February. This work is inspired by my recent experiences living in Brazil and, to a lesser extent, in England. In 2013, I spent the year in Brazil working with music education projects inspired by Venezuela's “El Sistema” and exploring lots of Brazilian music. My favorite thing about most Brazilian classical music, and Latin American classical music in general, is the influence of the popular dance rhythms that inject huge amounts of energy into the music. I watched many performances of youth orchestras in Brazil and they have so much fun playing these works, dancing and twirling their instruments, and just having an enjoyable time. I was fortunate to get to play piano in a performance of Arturo Marquez's famous “Danzon No. 2” with one of the youth orchestras, and the energy was just incredible. This is a memory I will never forget, and I wanted to capture some of that same energy and fun in my own piece. I spent the summer of 2014 living in a tiny town in Somerset, England. While I was there, I discovered the incredible five-volume set of “Folk Songs from Somerset” collected in the early 20th century by Cecil Sharp. Worried that these songs may soon be lost forever, Sharp traveled around Somerset county and transcribed as many folk songs as he could from the people, some of which are now very well known, such as “O Waly, Waly (The Water is Wide),” “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” and “Bingo.” I have always been fascinated by folk songs, and I thought it incredible that I was living right in the same place where Sharp captured this rich collection, including some from singers right in the little town I was living in! I also was deeply exploring Percy Grainger's music at the time and fell in love with his beautiful settings of many English folk songs, some of which he found in Sharp's collection. I was so entranced with one such setting, Grainger's passacaglia for orchestra on the song “Green Bushes,” that I decided to make my own passacaglia loosely based on this work but with musical material inspired by Brazil. The passacaglia theme is a blend of three Brazilian folk-like melodies typical of the Northeast region of the country, and the piece is also infused with rhythms and instruments of samba, baião, and other Brazilian musical styles. Keane Southard 2015
Performance instructions: 1. For the optional singing of the passacaglia theme at rehearsal marker “M”, either all nonpercussionists must sing or nobody sings. It is not an option to be decided by each individual player but by the group as a whole. 2. The dancing at rehearsal marker “M” is not optional, but each ensemble can do whatever they want to in this regard. This could be anything from each person improvising whatever they feel comfortable doing to a fully choreographed production with movements, spins, moving around the stage, twirling instruments around, etc., or anything in between. The most important thing is to be creative and have fun. There are many videos on Youtube of Latin American youth orchestras doing this sort of thing that could provide some inspiration as well. The dancing can last past the percussion break until the end of the piece.
