Belgium - My First International Job with Horses in 2010 A Stormy Experience with Benita Benita, my favorite mare at the stable, surges forward beneath me like a champion. What had started out as a long, pleasant, luxurious walk with my fellow coworker and her mount had somehow turned into a mad dash for the barn. Lady luck laughed in our faces when exactly thirty minutes, and halfway, of our walk had approached. What had been clear skies and sunny morning promises had somehow turned into a massive rainstorm neither of us girls could have predicted.

But then again that’s typical Belgium weather, I thought as the brim of my helmet kept the downpour from my eyes. My light windbreaker jacket and thin riding breeches had been completely soaked through in less than a minute of the heavy rain. With no options for turning back and with the wet pavement making the horse shoes too slippery to risk riding any faster, Benita and I trotted carefully down the road.

Oncoming traffic, flashing lights, ditches on either side, strong gusts of wind and bone-chilling rain made for an adventure of a return home. I had known early on to keep my reins soft in my hands, and not just because my fingers were too frozen to grip them properly, with Benita underneath me.

Belgium is a unique and beautiful country in Europe.

Of all the horses in the stables to be trapped in a storm with, I was thankful to be sitting atop this brave mare. Not because she was an easy ride, because she definitely wasn’t. Not because Benita had never bolted full speed with me on her back in an attempt to strike fear in me, which she did and which didn’t. It was simply because Benita and I understood each other. I trusted her and her instincts and was confident that Benita would stop at nothing to return safely to the barn where her three-month-old foal waited for her.

Smiling Through the Storm Despite the absolute cold that overwhelmed every ounce of my body, I couldn’t stop the grin from piercing my lips. I didn’t know why all of the most unlikely of events always seemed to happen to me…but I did know that I enjoyed every single second of it.

My First International Job I flew to Belgium on the day of my 21st birthday back in 2010.

It was to be my VERY FIRST job internationally. I had worked with horses since I was 15 and I had recently graduated from an Equestrian College. I had lots of experience with horses. I also had been living on my own in Oklahoma since I was 18.

I was an independent solo traveler for years and had traveled internationally quite young as a child. But the fact that I was officially about to start a JOB overseas was a shock for me. I was over joyed and eager for the experience to work in the shadow of an Olympic rider. Ever since I was a child I dreamed to ride in the Olympics as a show jumper and this felt like it was taking me one step closer.

I spent 3 months working in Belgium for a 4-time Olympic Equestrian Eventing Rider in exchange for meals, room and lessons from her and her coaches.

My First Month of Hard Work The first month at the stables was hard. I had been assigned to Benita before my boss flew to the USA to ride in the upcoming WEG and she was gone for that month. She had already assessed me in the saddle, but as she was set to leave, she assigned me to ride Benita as a test. Benita wasn’t easy, by any means and when she returned a month later and saw how much progress the two of us made together she increased my workload of horses.

Long Days Because I only had the one horse to ride that first month, I was stuck doing all the heavy barn chores such as grooming, mucking out stalls, haying all 40 horses, bringing horses in and out from the field—covering myself in deep mud—and putting and removing horses from the hot walker and treadmill. It was grunt work and I worked from 6am to 9pm every day with only a 30 minute lunch break.

Proving Myself and Taking More (Fun) Responsibility Upon her return and confirming my riding talents, my Olympic boss scheduled me each day with enough horses to ride that I simply could not assist with the other grunt work chores.

Those chores then fell to the working students that were not as experienced in the saddle. I had to maintain the horses training program in the arena and I would ride roughly 5 horses each day. I was trusted with the responsibility of riding the younger horses on “walks.” These walks were very enjoyable, lasting anywhere from 1-2 hours but while riding on very green horses that were extremely valuable due to their future career in the Olympics, I had a lot of weight on my shoulders.

Riding Rain or Shine I rode the horses on the roads, rain or shine. I had to slow down passing cars by riding in front of them and allowing them to pass while my horse spooked sideways. I had to hold on for my life as the same horses cowered from the large tractors plowing the fields and crops on the long ride. I enjoyed these rides and often grinned proudly when my spooky-future-Olympic babies would canter in the most gorgeous powerful frame I could ever dream.

Realizing What I Really Want I learned a lot and greatly appreciated the opportunity but I had my sights set for the horizon and knew that I wanted more to life than just slaving away for 16-20-hour shifts, 6 days a week. I wanted to travel. I wanted a personal life. But I also really, really wanted to keep riding Olympic horses and continue to follow my passion for a career as a professional show jumper. Which is how I ended up combining the two and following my heart to a job in Egypt, of all places. There I would be training and riding under the tutelage of an FEI II Coach (like I am now!) and also get the opportunity to travel, live and work in an exotic destination to a faraway land.

From Belgium & Beyond But Egypt was yet to come. I was going through plenty of culture shock in Belgium! After all, it was my first country across the pond! And at 21 years old, I wasn't quite prepared for how little I knew of the world. EVERYTHING fascinated me!

From Bread-Vending Machines in the town center to the fact that the locals couldn't speak English (I was in Flemish Speaking Belgium). I felt as if my eyes had been opened for the first time and I felt hungry to take in as much of the culture and surroundings as I could. (And with one day off a week it proved difficult but I vowed to spend those days exploring the nearby town solo-style!)

I loved my time in Belgium, however and I was thankful for the chance it gave me to open my eyes to a world bigger than I had ever imagined back in the States.

I’ll never forget that feeling I got when I saw my flag hanging amongst the others. I was the ONLY rider from the United States at this FEI Competition in Romania where I competed at 1m-1.30m on green horses.

As a young girl, I always was known as the “dreamer.” I was the girl sitting in the classroom closest to the window, gazing into the distance and imagining far away lands and undiscovered worlds.

More importantly, I saw myself galloping and soaring through the air on horses in these new and foreign lands. My childhood daydreaming didn’t stop with adulthood and I eventually found myself flying solo on a sixteen hour flight towards my first opportunity to work with horses abroad. It was my 21st birthday the day I flew to Belgium for the first time, six years ago. So how did I do it?

Back in my hometown of Rio Vista, California, the world seemed quite far away indeed. The small town, with a population of roughly 7,000 people, didn’t offer much knowledge or education in regards to faraway lands and nations. In fact, I had never met anyone who had travelled extensively apart from my own father who had travelled in his youth with the military. Although I saw photos of the Great Pyramids of Giza in the history books, and read about the Ancient Greeks and German military, I had never met anyone who had actually seen the pyramids in real life with their own eyes. Or talked to a person from the other side of the wall, so to speak. Or seen any of these historical places that seemed so very far away from Rio Vista.

Although I didn’t know how I was going to travel and see the world, I knew that I was going to do it. A voice within me didn’t need to know the how and instead I simply focused on my dream and my goal of traveling to exotic lands atop a horse.

My entire family was military. Joining the military seemed like a logical way to travel. I even found myself speaking to an Airforce recruiter when I turned 18 in a serious attempt to realize my dream of travel. But the military could not guarantee travel with the freedom that I so craved, and the biggest deal-breaker for me being that there were no horses or horse positions offered through the military. I couldn’t risk giving up several years of my life working in a field I had no interest, so I continued my education with horses in the hopes that the how would soon reveal itself to me.

I attended an International Equestrian College. Surely, an “International” school would be able to help me get work abroad… or so I thought. Once I reached my graduating quarter and got access to the “job book” I realized how not-soInternational they were. Deciding that I couldn’t sit around and wait a second longer for my dream to come true, I took out my laptop and began researching stables across the Atlantic. I sent out dozens of emails and a copy of my resume before landing that first International job in Belgium. The job was going to be hard work and cost me all my savings for the flight ticket, but I figured the risk was worth gamble if it allowed me the opportunity to follow my dream.

Now here I am 10 years later, still traveling the world on horseback. I’ve worked in over 20 different countries with

horses and have traveled to more than 60 on 6 different continents. I’ve traveled to places like Timor-Leste, Yemen, Iraq and countless others. I love “slow travel” the most. I often spend several months or even several years in a country before moving on to the next.

I didn’t need to know the “how” all those years ago. I just needed to believe in myself. I am thankful that I chose to invest in my dream. It has led me to amazing places. The first time I saw the pyramids with my own eyes in real life, tears of happiness streamed from my cheeks. The first time I gazed at the Taj Mahal, climbed to the top of the peak to see the Tiger’s Nest Temple, or rode a horse in my first International Competition…I felt all my dreams come true. I am thankful for my experiences and opportunities. The highs and the lows.

They have made me who I am. They have tested and challenged me and although it was never easy, this life of wanting but not knowing, I have never regretted getting on the plane.

Believe in yourself. Chase after your dreams. Even if you don’t know “how,” go for it anyway. The “how” will be shown to you…

Getting my FEI LEVEL II Show Jumping Certification in Greece

I was surprised to say the least when I found out I was the first and ONLY FEI Level II Show Jumping and Dressage Coach from the United States! Here is the WHAT, the HOW and the WHY! FEI is something most equestrians have heard of. It’s the Federation Equestria International and it is based in Europe.

Although there are many FEI competitions in the USA, along with some judges and stewards that are American, I am the first one to become a Level II Coach.

What is an FEI Coach?

Well, it means that I went to Europe and got tested by the Federation for my skills as a Coach and Instructor. I have years of experience coaching various National Teams in my travels and so I put my skills to the ultimate test and went for my FEI Level One back in 2014.

With the Level One I was shown the FEI Curriculum and tested by an FEI appointed Tutor whom became a close mentor of mine. I later visited him in Greece and it was by his recommendation in 2016 that I was accepted and referred to attend my Level Two. Level Two cannot be done by just anyone and those who attended Level One needed to wait a minimum of Two years to apply for the level Two AND they could only apply for the Level Two if they were referred by their FEI Tutor from Level One. (Which Thankfully I was!)

To break it down: FEI II Showjumping Coach's successfully coach students to: Compete in Show Jumping up to 1.30 meters Compete in Dressage up to Elementary Level Must be able to follow the FEI Curriculum and Ensure Horse and Rider Welfare

How I got my Level II My Level Two course took me to Athens, Greece where I was again tested for the period of a week. After giving countless lessons to Elementary Dressage Students and Horses and Show Jumping Lessons up to 1.30 Meters in Height, I STILL WASN’T FINISHED. I had three months to put together 20 lesson plans following the FEI curriculum at the Level Two height and level. Meaning, I needed QUALITY and High level Students to complete my log book! Luckily for me, I was based in Germany during these three months and quality students wasn’t too difficult to come by!

After a much awaited, nail biting anticipation, I PASSED! I got my Certificate early 2017. Next I will apply for my level III (the final and highest level.)

Why Getting Certified Before Going Abroad May Come in Handy…

You may be wondering, yeah, yeah, but what’s this got to do with me?

When I first began my career working with horses abroad, although I knew I was skilled and always the best rider around, I knew that when applying online for jobs a lot can get lost in translation. I wanted a piece of paper that was internationally recognized to PROVE to potential job applicants that I was more than qualified. I had been tested by an official, certified coach.

Now, I’m not saying you need to be FEI certified. In fact, there are LOADS of different certifications out there! You can become certified as a riding instructor with the BHS if your from the UK. You can get certified as a trail guide, get your international driving license to drive large horse transport vehicles, and much much more. You can become a certified veterinarian or farrier or even a certified saddle fitter or saddle maker!

These pieces of paper may not mean anything to some, but to the large majority, the more pieces of paper you have (as society has trained us to do) then the easier it will be to find jobs by sending random blind emails to stables.

Hacienda del Chalán

An amazing experience on our small family Ranch in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We offer horseback riding tours along the Peruvian Andes.

As a volunteer couple you will help out (25 hrs per week) with feeding the animals, cleaning and handy work around the stables, saddling the horses, equine therapy and house holding tasks.

We offer an all-in stay at our Ranch, possibility to join the riding tours and free time to discover the culture/nature.

SHARE OUR MISSION Our core mission to rehabilitate and rehome rescue horses is the focal point of our business and we want to share our experiences with you. This 8 day working vacation program offers riders age 15 and older the ability to develop their trail riding skills, learn to work with rescue horses, and immerse themselves in the Southwest culture. Each day will be spent working on the ranch, in the saddle, and engaging with clients.

Manjeev is a certified Monty Roberts instructor. He has spent extensive time training horses, including wild mustangs in the US. Charlotte is passionate about helping people bond with horses. They have brought their passions together: polo and the well being of horses. Our volunteer programs offer the opportunity to get trained in natural horsemanship, learn about the day to day runnings of a horse business and guest relations, ride, go for hacks in the beautiful surroundings and of course learn how to play polo in our arena.
