Horned Toad Prints “Ambos Lados” means “both sides” in Spanish.

This print exchange was organized from both sides of the border—by Horned Toad Prints in El Paso, Texas, and by Adrian Aguirre and Beatriz Rivas of Taller Grafica Libre in Zaachila, Oaxaca.

The “Ambos Lados International Print Exchange” expands the dialog between the two cultures, as there are strong printmaking communities in both the US and Mexico. The 158 prints are fairly evenly split between two countries—with 72 from Mexico, 80 from the United States, and 6 from other countries, Australia, Canada, Cuba and Ireland. Anyone in the world could participate, as this was a non-juried print exchange, and the theme was open.

The goals of the “Ambos Lados International Print Exchange” are as follows: ■

Promote local, national, and international artists from various professional levels and ethnic backgrounds.

■

Exhibit works by established and emerging artists as a group with emphasis on the cultural diversity of the print community.

■

Explore the different print processes and establish communication between participants.

■

Allow all participants to benefit from the interchange of ideas and experiences.

■

Start personal collection of prints from various professional levels and ethnic backgrounds.

■

Partner with museums and galleries around the world in order to reach as many people as possible through the exhibition of prints.

Thank you to all the wonderful artists who participated and made this a reality. In conclusion, I really loved working with Adrian, Beti and Nidia and how it established a life-long friendship with all my new found family of friends from beautiful Oaxaca, Mexico. Horned Toad Prints “Both Sides” significa “ambos lados” en Inglés.

Este intercambio de estampas se organizó desde ambos lados de la frontera, por Horned Toad Prints en El Paso, Texas, y por Adrian Aguirre y Beatriz Rivas de Taller Gráfica Libre en Zaachila, Oaxaca.

El “Ambos Lados International Print Exchange” amplía el diálogo entre las dos culturas, ya que hay comunidades de grabadores fuertes, tanto en los Estados Unidos como en México. Las 158 estampas están divididas de manera bastante uniforme entre los dos países—72 de México, 80 de Estados Unidos y seis de otros países, Australia, Canadá, Cuba e Irlanda. Cualquiera en el mundo podría participar, ya que se trataba de un intercambio de impresiones sin jurado y el tema estaba abierto.

Los objetivos del “Ambos Lados International Print Exchange” son los siguientes: ■

Promover artistas locales, nacionales e internacionales de diversos niveles profesionales y etnias.

■

Exhibir obras de artistas establecidos y emergentes como un grupo con énfasis en la diversidad cultural de la comunidad de grabadores

■

Explorar los diferentes procesos de impresión y establecer la comunicación entre los participantes.

■

Permitir que todos los participantes se beneficien del intercambio de ideas y experiencias.

■

Comience una colección personal de impresiones de diversos niveles profesionales y antecedentes étnicos.

■

Asóciese con museos y galerías de todo el mundo para llegar a la mayor cantidad de personas posible a través de la exposición de grabados.

Gracias a todos los maravillosos artistas que participaron e hicieron de esto una realidad.

Taller Grafica Libre Taller Gráfica Libre agradece la colaboración con el taller Horned Toad Prints y permitirnos coordinar el Intercambio "Ambos Lados" en Oaxaca. Taller Grafica Libre Taller Gráfica Libre is pleased to collaborate with Horned Toad Prints in coordinating the "Ambos Lados Print Exchange" from Oaxaca. Our objective was to support the developed printmaking communities on the periphery of the city and invite their artists to participate, as well as to showcase the different artistic ideas from workshops that do not work within the established dynamic of the center of Oaxaca City.

Being an open call disseminated over the Internet, this project gave all printmakers and workshops an opportunity to participate; as well as generate networks between workshops Beatriz Rivas in Taller Grafica Libre in Zaachila. from other cities and countries, start personal print collections, and ultimately through the knowledge gained with every print, to expand our panorama, as much in technique as in visual style, with ideas from the other workshops.

Panorama Actual de los Talleres de Grafica en Oaxaca

Entrance of Taller Grafica Libre (TGL) in Zaachila, Oaxaca — Manuel Guerra and Adrian Aguirre.

El estado de Oaxaca, ubicado al sur de México, es conocido por su enorme diversidad cultural y lingüística. Con 16 grupos étnicos habitando su territorio orográficamente intrincado y un número homónimo de lenguas originarias distribuidas a lo largo de sus 8 regiones, no es difícil imaginar que se trate de un lugar con una riqueza cultural inigualable.

Tampoco resulta extraño pensar que existe una relación entre este valioso universo de significados compartidos, representado en los ámbitos de la música, los bailes y danzas, las tradiciones y festividades, los textiles, la gastronomía y las artesanías en general, y el desarrollo de las artes plásticas, específicamente de la gráfica.

Desde que, en 1974, por iniciativa del pintor potosino Roberto Donis, se creó el Taller Rufino Tamayo, un espacio dedicado hasta la fecha a la enseñanza de las técnicas tradicionales de grabado y que en aquella época contaba con un programa de residencias para que los artistas originarios de otras regiones de Oaxaca pudieran 82

vivir aquí mientras aprendían, la gráfica se ha convertido en la principal expresión artística del estado.

Fue precisamente en este espacio donde se formaron buena parte de los grabadores que ahora dirigen los numerosos talleres de gráfica en Oaxaca, quienes además recibieron gran influencia de uno de sus maestros y director: el reconocido artista Juan Alcázar, impulsor de la creación de talleres comunitarios dirigidos

a niños y jóvenes en San Francisco Cajonos, Capulalpam de Méndez, San Andrés Zautla, Reyes Etla y Huajuapan de León.

Otro factor que ha hecho posible la vasta producción gráfica en Oaxaca, fue la apertura en la década de los sesenta de la Instructoría en Artes Plásticas, y posteriormente de la licenciatura en Artes Plásticas y Visuales de la Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez de Oaxaca (UABJO), universidad que lleva el nombre del Benemérito de las Américas, uno de los más destacados presidentes de México y originario de este lugar.

Por su parte, los talleres ubicados en el centro de la ciudad fueron generados a partir de la influencia de otro maestro: el artista japonés Shinzaburo Takeda, fundador desde el 2008 de la “Bienal Nacional de Artes Gráficas Shinzaburo Takeda”. Su labor es similar a la realizada por el artista Francisco Toledo al frente de instituciones culturales como el Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca (IAGO) y el Centro de las Artes de San Agustín (CASA).

Si bien la Universidad estatal y las instituciones públicas han tenido un papel relevante en la formación académica de los artistas y en la promoción del arte como elemento crucial del desarrollo humano, en el contexto de un territorio con una enorme diversidad cultural y debido a las propias carencias de las instituciones, desde el 2015 existe una creciente apertura de talleres de gráfica independientes. Sólo en la ciudad de

El 2006 generó un incremento de la producción gráfica en Oaxaca. El conflicto social derivado del movimiento magisterial en contra del entonces gobernador Ulises Ruiz Ortiz atrajo a estudiantes y artistas que acompañaron estas manifestaciones con una gráfica que abordaba temas políticos y de abierto repudio hacia el gobierno estatal. Es así como se conformó la

Oaxaca de Juárez, capital de este estado, existen alrededor de 25 talleres dedicados a la gráfica, que trabajan sobre todo xilografía, linograbado, punta seca, agua tinta y agua fuerte, además de serigrafía. Algunas de las razones para el surgimiento de estas iniciativas independientes están en la historia misma de su territorio.

Asamblea de Artistas Revolucionarios de Oaxaca (ASARO) y se abrieron paulatinamente algunos espacios dedicados a ese ámbito.

A partir de ese momento, surgieron en Oaxaca cada vez más talleres de gráfica, espacios culturales independientes y galerías, conformando una escena cultural todavía en crecimiento, aunque por supuesto no han sido los primeros. Beatriz y Adrián recibieron de otros talleres e imprimieron un total de 54 ediciones. Su primera intención fue invitar a talleres que no estuvieran en el Centro de Oaxaca sino en la periferia, y a artistas que no tienen su propio taller. Para ellos, lo más importante de esta carpeta es el intercambio entre dos países a pesar de las fronteras y la burocracia, así como la búsqueda de la libertad a través del arte y de la resistencia que produce entenderlo como una forma de vida donde constantemente se intercambian experiencias.

La gestión de este proyecto duró un año, la convocatoria fue abierta y se publicó en las páginas de The Horned Toad Prints y del Taller Gráfica Libre, recibiendo un total de 158 grabados, principalmente de México y Estados Unidos, pero también algunos de Cuba, Canadá, Australia e Irlanda.

En resumidas cuentas, podemos decir que existen tres esferas de la producción gráfica en Oaxaca: la institucional, los talleres del centro histórico y los de la periferia, estos dos últimos de carácter independiente. En este Intercambio internacional, los talleres de la periferia de la ciudad o fuera de esta adquieren mayor relevancia, debido no sólo a su grado de especialización en las técnicas de impresión, sino al compromiso con el trabajo que los sostiene y da valor.

The state of Oaxaca, located in the south of Mexico, is known for its enormous cultural and linguistic diversity. With 16 ethnic groups inhabiting its intricate terrain and an equal number of indigenous languages distributed throughout its 8 regions, it is not difficult to imagine it as a place of unequaled cultural wealth.

as a space dedicated to the teaching of traditional printmaking techniques, and which at that time offered a residency program for artists from other regions of Oaxaca to live there while they learned.

Since then, printmaking has become the main form of artistic expression in the state of Oaxaca.

Nor is it strange to think that there exists a relationship between this valuable universe of shared meanings, as represented in the areas of music, dance, traditions and festivities, textiles, gastronomy and artisanal goods in general, and the development of visual arts, specifically in printmaking.

It was precisely in this workshop where many of the printmakers, who now direct the numerous printmaking workshops in Oaxaca, were educated.

They were also greatly influenced by one of their teachers and director: the well-known artist Juan Alcázar, the driving force behind the creation of many community workshops dedicated to children and youths in San Francisco Cajonos, Capulalpam de Méndez, San Andrés Zautla, Reyes Etla and Huajuapan de León.

Another factor that has made possible the vast printmaking production in Oaxaca was the opening in the 1960s of the Instructoría de Artes Plásticas, and later the bachelor’s degree in visual arts at the Autonomous University of Benito Juárez of Oaxaca (UABJO), a university which bears the name of one of Mexico’s most renowned presidents, a native of the state.

In addition, workshops located in the center of the city were formed through the influence of another teacher: the Japanese artist Shinzaburo Takeda, founder since 2008 of the “Bienal Nacional de Artes Gráficas Shinzaburo Takeda.” His labors are similar to those

It is true that the state university and public institutions have had a relevant role in the academic formation of artists and the promotion of art as a fundamental element of human development. However in response to the enormous cultural diversity of Oaxaca, and due to the shortcomings of these same institutions, there emerged since 2015 a growing number of independent printmaking workshops. In Oaxaca City alone, the capital of this state, there are around 25 workshops dedicated to printmaking that produce woodcuts, linocuts, dry points, aquatints and etchings, as well as serigraphs.

Some of the reasons for the emergence of these independent initiatives come from the history of this very territory.

2006 saw an increase in printmaking production in Oaxaca. The social conflict stemming from the teacher’s movement against then governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz attracted students and artists, who accompanied the protests with prints that addressed political topics and openly repudiated the state government. That was

how the Assembly of Revolutionary Artists of Oaxaca (ASARO) started, and gradually other art spaces too, dedicated to the same issues.

From this moment on, an increasing number of printmaking workshops, independent cultural spaces and galleries emerged in Oaxaca, forming the growing cultural scene, though of course they were not the first of their kind. Before these printmaking collectives opened their own spaces, there existed specialized workshops that were closed to the general public, such as Francisco Limon’s La Maquina, Abraham Torres’ Taller Bambu, The Fernando Sandoval Workshop and The Printmaking Workshop of Enrique Flores. In contrast, the emerging workshops in

Within this historical framework of printmaking in Oaxaca, in which at present the contributions of independent printmaking workshops are greater than those of the universities and public institutions, appears the “Ambos Lados International Print Exchange,” the exchange between Mexico and the United States, organized by Horned Toad Prints under Manuel Guerra, and Taller Gráfica Libre, directed by Beatriz Rivas and Adrián Aguirre .

participants not from the center of Oaxaca city, but from those workshops on the periphery, and artists without their own workshops. For them, the most important thing about this portfolio is the exchange between two countries, despite borders and bureaucracy, as well as the search for a freedom through art and resistance, that perpetuates a way of life in which experiences are constantly exchanged.

The execution of this project lasted a year; the call was open and published on The Horned Toad Prints and Taller Gráfica Libre web pages. It received a total of 158 prints, mainly from Mexico and the United States, but also from Cuba, Canada, Australia and Ireland.

In summation, we can say that three spheres of printmaking production exist in Oaxaca: the institution, the workshops of the historical center, and those of the periphery, the last two of which are of independent character. In this international exchange, the workshops of the periphery, and those beyond the city (of Oaxaca), acquire more relevance, due not only to their specialization in printmaking techniques, but also to their commitment to the work that sustains them and gives value to what they do.

Looking Towards Mexico and the Future from the Southwest We are pleased and humbled by the efforts of all 158 printmakers. Moreover we are especially excited to be working with Mexican printmakers, as they have a strong tradition of printmaking that has influenced those north of the border. Right now Oaxaca is a Mecca of printmaking, where talented young grabadores are emerging every year. We are very grateful to be working with Adrian Aguirre and Beatriz Rivas, the directors of Taller Grafica Libre in Zaachila, Oaxaca, and with Nidia Rosales Moreno, curator from Oaxaca.

Likewise there is a lot of artistic talent in El Paso and the rest of the Southwest, which is often overlooked, as we are so far from the big metropolitan art centers on the east and west coasts. However Manuel Guerra of Horned Toad Prints (and UTEP instructor) is

making some noise from the Mountain Time Zone, with his fellow printmakers and crew, Francisco Delgado and Raul Monarrez. This is the third print exchange that the Horned Toad Prints studio has directed, in order to reach out to the rest of the world.

The "Ambos Lados International Print Exchange" has been organized from both sides of the border—by Manuel Guerra of Horned Toad Prints in El Paso, and by Adrian Aguirre and Beatriz Rivas of Taller Grafica Libre in Zaachila (just outside the city of Oaxaca). However talleres (collective studios) also submitted from Puebla, Monterrey, Uruapan, Guanajuato and Mexico City. Most of the US submissions were from individuals in the Southwes t —Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California . Many excellent

prints came from San Antonio, as there is a strong printmaking program from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Argos Gallery of Santa Fe, and discovered: dry point, engraving, etching, aquatint, soft ground, mezzotint, lithograph, serigraph, collagraph, photopolymer gravure, solar plate, and one dry point on Tetra Pak (essentially dry point on milk carton packaging).

We also received submissions from the extreme four points of the United States — eight from California, including one by Pavel Acevedo, our original Oaxaca connection; four from Washington State, including one by Brian Lane, co-organizer of the "Print Zero Print Exchange"; one from Massachusetts, and three from Florida.

Ambos Lados is hardly the first international print exchange. For instance, since 2009

many of our Ambos Lados artists have been participating in the huge IPE (International Print Exchange) of the United Kingdom (which received 236 prints in their latest 2018 exchange). Seven of the Southwest artists participated in the "Dialogos E Interpretaciones" print exchanges from 2012 — 2015, organized by Jules Floss, then of North Carolina, and Jorge Eliecer Rodríguez Osorio of Colombia. That inspired the first "Horned Toad Print Exchange" in 2014 , which then lead to the "YayBig Print Exchange" (organized by Joe Marshall in Tucson). A catalog was selfpublished with the works from both of the Horned Toad and YayBig print exchanges, and 176

these exchanges exhibited together at many venues from 2014–2016.

This print exchange momentum lead to other projects, such as the "Desert Triangle Print Carpeta" of 2016, featuring large prints from 30 artists from El Paso, Tucson and Albuquerque; and "From Behind the Wall— Prints by Contemporary Mexican Maestros" of 2017, exhibited in both El Paso and Albuquerque.

Looking forward I can imagine other pop-up print shows across the Southwest and the country. Perhaps a shop could organize a smaller local portfolio, of prints by ten, or even

just five artists. Another print studio, in a different city, could likewise put together a small portfolio of five or ten prints. Then those in El Paso could exchange prints in the mail with those in San Antonio, or even with those in Oaxaca, and have a pop-up print show of 10 or 20 prints in both cities, offering a little Oaxaca mezcal at the opening. That could stimulate the local artists , by exposing them to masterpieces from outside their bubble, and spark another round of fine printmaking.

Esto es el tercer intercambio que Horned Toad Prints dirige con el fin de hacer contacto con el resto del mundo.

"Ambos Lados International Print Exchange" fue organizado desde los dos lados de la frontera: por Manuel Guerra de Horned Toads Prints y por Adrián Aguirre y Beatríz Rivas de Taller Gráfica Libre en Zaachila (pueblo ubicado en las cercanías de la ciudad de Oaxaca). Sin embargo, algunos talleres participantes se localizan en Puebla,

de Octavio Irving, quien fuera director del famoso Taller Experimental de Gráfica en Habana. Adicionalmente, nos complació recibir dos ediciones de Australia, uno de Canadá, y uno de Irlanda.

Monterrey, Uruapan, Guanajuato y la Ciudad de México. La mayoría de las propuestas del EUA fueron de habitantes del Suroeste de los Estados Unidos —Texas, Nuevo México, Arizona y California. Excelentes grabados provienen de San Antonio, ya que hay un programa de grabado impresionante en la Universidad de Texas de San Antonio.

Nuestros grabadores usaron todo tipo de de técnicas para hacer sus obras maestras.

Eric Thomson y yo, dedicamos cinco horas a revisar todos los grabados en Argos Gallery, localizado en Santa Fe y descubrimos: punta seca, aguafuerte, aguatinta, grabado al barniz blando, mezzotinta, litografía, serigrafía, colografía, fotograbado, placa solar, y una punta seca en Tetra Pak (esencialmente punta seca sobre cartón de leche).

También recibimos grabados de los cuatro extremos de los Estados Unidos: ocho de California, incluyendo uno de Pavel Acevedo, quien fue nuestra conexión original con Oaxaca; cuatro del estado de Washington, incluyendo uno de Brian Lane, co-organizador del "Print Zero Print Exchange"; uno de Massachusetts; y tres de Florida.

Eso inspiró al primer "Horned Toad Print Exchange" en 2014, el cual dio paso al "YayBig Print Exchange" (organizado en Tucson por Joe Marshall). Se autopublicó un catálogo con los trabajos de Horned Toad y YayBig. Estos dos intercambios se exhibieron juntos en varios sitios desde el 2014 hasta 2016.

Este ímpetu, dio paso a otros proyectos como el "Desert Triangle Print Carpeta" en 2016, que contó con grabados de gran formato con 30 artistas de El Paso, Tucson y Albuquerque, así como “From Behind the Wall—Prints by Contemporary Mexican Maestros” (“Desde Atrás del Muro—Grabados de Maestros Mexicanos Contemporáneos”) en 2017, expuesto en El Paso y Albuquerque.

De cara al futuro, puedo imaginar otros eventos pop-up de grabado a lo largo del Suroeste de los Estados Unidos y el país. Quizá un taller podría organizar una carpeta local más pequeña, de cinco a diez grabados. Otro taller, en una ciudad diferente, también puede organizar una carpeta pequeña de cinco o diez grabados. Entonces, los de El Paso podrían intercambiar sus grabados por correo con los de San Antonio, o aún con los

en Oaxaca, y tener una exhibición pop-up de las dos ciudades con diez o veinte estampas, ofreciendo un poco de mezcal oaxaqueño en su apertura. Eso podría estimular a artistas locales, acercándolos a obras maestras fuera de su burbuja, provocando así otra ronda de grabado de gran calidad.

A diferencia de escultura y pintura, estampas viajan con facilidad. DHL y FedEx enviarán estampas a todo el mundo, lo que significa que podemos tener exposiciones internacionales en cualquier parte del planeta. Además, con Instagram podemos mantenernos al día con grabadores por todo el mundo. Con un poco más de esfuerza, podemos auto-publicar catálogos de cualquier colección de estampas. Realmente tenemos más recursos en el siglo XXI, y el "Ambos Lados International Print Exchange" está aprovechando de todo.
