STAGING STAGING SILENCE SILENCE 10.10.2020 – 05.04.2021

Met de tentoonstelling Staging silence verwelkomt het Kröller-Müller Museum twee recente aanwinsten in de collectie: het videowerk Staging silence (3) (2019) van Hans Op de Beeck en het fotowerk Breaking dawn forever (2020) van Geert Mul. De twee aankopen worden gepresenteerd met een selectie multimediawerken uit de museumcollectie waarin stilte, reflectie en bezinning centraal staan.

Staging silence (3) is het derde en laatste deel in een reeks films van Hans Op de Beeck waarin de beschouwer wordt meegenomen op een reis door een verlaten wereld. In een minifilmset construeren én deconstrueren twee paar anonieme handen fictieve landschappen en interieurs. De mens ontbreekt nadrukkelijk in de steeds veranderende ensceneringen. Voor Breaking dawn forever fotografeerde Geert Mul een 500 jaar oude eik, een zogenaamde Kroezeboom, die een grens of kruispunt markeert. Het licht achter de op een glasplaat geprinte foto verandert gedurende vijftig minuten van kleur en intensiteit: van warm tot koud krijtachtig wit.

Hans Op de Beeck en Geert Mul maken het verstrijken van tijd tastbaar in geënsceneerde voorstellingen die oproepen tot verstilling. Ook de werken van Lara

Almarcegui, Marinus Boezem, Hamish Fulton, Pierre Huyghe, herman de vries en Jeff Wall bieden geregisseerde momenten van rust binnen de alsmaar versnellende wereld om ons heen. de vries filmde voor chance & change (no beginning no end / weilersbach) (2007) een kabbelend beekje, Wall zette de voorstelling van Some beans (1990) tot in het kleinste detail in scène, en Fulton neemt in zijn Slide show-Scotland journey (1971) de beschouwer met beeld en muziek mee op reis door uitgestrekte Schotse landschappen. Almarcegui ging voor Ruins around Kröller-Müller Museum (2004) op zoek naar vervallen bouwwerken in de omgeving van het museum, Boezem bezocht voor La lumière Cistercienne (1985) 21 Cisterciënzer kloosterkerken en etste de plattegronden daarvan in ingelijste glasplaten. Tot slot legt Huyghe met de video Streamside day (2003) de ambivalentie bloot van de wens om in de natuur te willen leven door er een geheel nieuwe wijk in aan te leggen.

With the exhibition Staging silence, the Kröller-Müller Museum welcomes two recent acquisitions to the collection: the video work Staging silence (3) (2019) by Hans Op de Beeck and the photographic work Breaking dawn forever (2020) by Geert Mul. The two acquisitions are presented with a selection of multimedia works from the museum’s collection in which silence, reflection and contemplation play a central role.

Staging silence (3) is the third and final part in a series of films by Hans Op de Beeck in which the viewer is taken on a journey through a deserted world. In a miniature film set, two anonymous pairs of hands construct and deconstruct fictional landscapes and interiors. Human figures are emphatically absent from the ever-changing mise-en-scène. For Breaking dawn forever, Geert Mul photographed a 500 year-old oak tree, a so-called ‘Kroezeboom’, which marks a border or a crossroads.

The light behind the photograph, which is printed on a sheet of glass, changes colour and intensity over the course of fifty minutes: from warm to cold chalky white.

Hans Op de Beeck and Geert Mul make the passage of time tangible in their staged representations that evoke tranquillity. The works of Lara Almarcegui, Marinus

Boezem, Hamish Fulton, Pierre Huyghe, herman de vries and Jeff Wall also provide directed moments of stillness within the constantly accelerating world around us.

For chance & change (no beginning no end / weilersbach) (2007), de vries filmed a babbling brook, Wall staged every tiny detail of the work Some beans (1990), and Fulton takes the viewer on a journey through the expansive Scottish landscapes with images and music in his Slide show-Scotland journey (1971). For Ruins around Kröller-Müller Museum (2004), Almarcegui went in search of dilapidated buildings in the vicinity of the museum, for La Lumière Cistercienne (1985) Boezem visited 21 Cistercian churches, the floorplans of which he etched into framed glass plates. Finally, with the video Streamside day, Huyghe exposes the inconsistency of the desire to live in nature by building an entirely new neighbourhood there.

GEERT MUL

Alphen aan den Rijn 1965

Voor Breaking dawn forever fotografeerde Geert Mul een 500 jaar oude eik, een zogenaamde Kroezeboom, die een grens of kruispunt markeert. Het licht achter de op een glasplaat geprinte foto verandert gedurende 42.55 minuten van kleur en intensiteit: van warm tot koud krijtachtig wit.

Van koel en schel maanlicht tot het zachte licht van een opkomende zon. Heel subtiel verandert de stilstaande foto hierdoor in een filmisch beeld. De titel verwijst op een poëtische manier naar het bevroren moment in de tijd waarin het werk zich lijkt te bevinden: kijken we naar de ondergang van een tijdperk, of juist naar het aanbreken van een nieuwe en hoopvolle toekomst?

Mul ontwierp dit kunstwerk oorspronkelijk voor de ingang van een nieuw ziekenhuis. Hij onderzocht hoe een kunstwerk op een positieve manier kan bijdragen aan onze gemoedstoestand en concludeerde dat ‘je iets afvragen’ of ergens bij stil staan een manier kan zijn om zorgwekkende gedachten en emoties los te laten.

For Breaking dawn forever, Geert Mul photographed a 500 year-old oak tree, a so-called ‘Kroezeboom’, which marks a border or a crossroads. The light behind the photograph, which is printed on a sheet of glass, changes colour and intensity over the course of 42.55 minutes: from warm to cold chalky white. From cool and piercing moonlight to the soft light of the rising sun. This subtly changes the still photograph into a cinematic image. The title poetically refers to the frozen moment in time in which the work appears to exist: are we witnessing the end of an era, or indeed the dawn of a new and hopeful future?

Mul originally designed this work for the entrance of a new hospital. He investigated how a work of art can positively contribute to our state of mind and concluded that ‘wondering about something’ or pondering a question can be a way to let go of worrying thoughts and emotions.

HAMISH FULTON

London 1946

Hamish Fulton maakt wandelingen. Variërend van kort tot lang, altijd alleen en altijd in natuurlijk landschap. De wandelingen ‘bewaart’ hij in de vorm van foto’s. In zijn Slide show-Scotland journey neemt Fulton de beschouwer met beeld en muziek mee op een reis door uitgestrekte Schotse landschappen. Het is een gedetailleerd ‘beeldverslag’ in drieënzeventig dia’s, begeleid door het muziekstuk Cave of gold dat wordt gespeeld op doedelzak.

Hamish Fulton goes for walks; whether short or long, always alone and always in a natural landscape. He ‘saves’ the walks in the form of photographs. In his Slide showScotland journey, Fulton takes the observer on a journey through the expansive Scottish landscapes with images and music. It is a detailed ‘visual account’ in seventy-three slides, accompanied by the composition Cave of gold played on the bagpipes.

De natuur en de manier waarop de mens de natuur ervaart is een belangrijk thema in het werk van Fulton. Slide showScotland journey is een opmaat naar Fultons beslissing in 1973 om alleen nog wandelkunst te maken. Hij maakt zijn eindeloze voettochten om los te komen van vastgeroeste denkpatronen en het leven van alledag. The natural environment was not built by man and for this reason it is for me deeply mysterious and religious.’

Nature and the way people experience nature is an important theme in Fulton’s work. Slide show-Scotland journey is a prelude to Fulton’s decision in 1973 to concentrate solely on walking art. He makes his endless walks to break free from entrenched patterns of thought and everyday life. For him, the landscape is a meditative space where time slows down: ‘Being in nature, for me, is direct religion. The natural environment was not built by man and for this reason it is for me deeply mysterious and religious’.

HANS OP DE BEECK

Staging silence (3) uit 2019 is het derde en laatste deel in een reeks films van Hans Op de Beeck waarin de beschouwer wordt meegenomen op een reis door een verlaten wereld.

In een minifilmset construeren én deconstrueren twee paar anonieme handen fictieve landschappen en interieurs.

Staging silence (3) from 2019 is the third and final part in a series of films by Hans Op de Beeck in which the viewer is taken on a journey through a deserted world. In a miniature film set, two anonymous pairs of hands construct and deconstruct fictional landscapes and interiors.

Op de Beeck combineert alledaagse voorwerpen op verrassende manieren om zijn wereld vorm te geven. Een begraafplaats wordt opgebouwd uit bonbons en broccoli, en een onopgemaakt bed verandert in een handomdraai in een bergachtig landschap.

Op de Beeck combines everyday objects in surprising ways to shape his world. A cemetery is constructed from chocolates and broccoli, and an unmade bed instantly transforms into a mountainous landscape.

Op sommige momenten kruipt de tijd uiterst traag voort en lijkt het landschap haast niet te veranderen, om dan opeens weer verrassende en snelle veranderingen te ondergaan.

De wijze waarop de handen de wereld op het scherm opbouwen en weer afbreken, benadrukt de dominante rol die de mens speelt bij veranderingen in de omgeving. Zo tonen de verlaten landschappen en interieurs de manier waarop wij – zowel in de omgang met natuur als architectuur – de open ruimte ‘vermenselijken’.

There are moments when time passes extremely slowly and the landscape hardly seems to alter, and then suddenly undergoes surprising and rapid changes. The way in which the hands build and tear down the world on the screen emphasizes the dominant role that humans play in the changes in the environment. In this way, the deserted landscapes and interiors reveal how we ‘humanize’ open space – both in how we deal with nature and architecture.

HERMAN DE VRIES

Voor chance & change (no beginning no end / weilersbach) filmde herman de vries een kabbelend beekje. De twee beeldschermen tonen verschillende video’s die het beekje vanuit twee standpunten laten zien, waardoor het water van het ene naar het andere scherm lijkt te stromen.

Aanvankelijk opgeleid als bioloog en natuuronderzoeker, besluit de vries pas later om kunstenaar te worden.

Processen en fenomenen in de natuur spelen een grote rol in zijn werk. ‘chance & change’ – toeval en verandering – is een cruciaal begrippenpaar in zijn oeuvre. Voor de vries vormen deze twee begrippen de basis voor ontstaan en ontwikkeling. Processen in de natuur vinden nooit onder dezelfde omstandigheden plaats en zijn afhankelijk van het toeval. Door met series te werken vestigt hij de aandacht op de enorme variëteit van alles om ons heen.

Initially trained as a biologist and naturalist, de vries only later decided to become an artist. Natural processes and phenomena play an important role in his work. ‘chance & change’ is a crucial pair of concepts in his oeuvre. For de vries, these two concepts form the basis for creation and development. Processes in nature never occur under the same conditions and depend on chance. By working with series, he draws attention to the enormous variety of everything around us.

The continuous image and sound of running water shows the magnificent simplicity of a flowing brook. A poetic documentation of chance and change.

JEFF WALL

Vancouver 1946

De compositie van deze foto is met zorg door Jeff Wall samengesteld, ook al lijkt het te gaan om een ruimte die toevallig zo is aangetroffen. Ook de lichtinval en de schaduwen zijn precies door Wall geregisseerd. In dit stilleven verkent hij de grens tussen abstractie en representatie.

Twee tafels staan keurig naast elkaar opgesteld in een donkere ruimte die doet denken aan een oude kelder. Op de rechter tafel ligt een hoopje bonen waaraan het werk de titel Some beans ontleent.

The composition of this photograph has been meticulously arranged by Jeff Wall, even though it appears to be a space that he just happened to come across. Even the incidence of light and the shadows are precisely directed by Wall. In this still life he explores the boundary between abstraction and representation. Two tables are neatly arranged side by side in a dark room reminiscent of an old cellar. A pile of beans lies on the table on the right, from which the title Some beans is derived.

Wall combineert fotografie met elementen van andere disciplines – schilderkunst, film en literatuur – tot een kunstvorm die hijzelf ‘cinematography’ noemt. De lichtbak refereert aan de alomtegenwoordige lichtgevende reclameborden waarvan de kleuren je tegemoet stralen. Het gebruik van deze techniek levert hier echter, door het grote contrast tussen licht en donker, een intiem beeld op. De schaal van het werk weerspiegelt Wall’s interesse in de negentiendeeeuwse kunstgeschiedenis: veel belangrijke schilderijen uit deze periode hebben een monumentaal formaat.

Wall combines photography with elements from other disciplines – painting, film and literature – into an art form that he calls ‘cinematography’. The light box refers to the ubiquitous illuminated billboards, the colours of which radiate towards you. Here, however, the use of this technique creates an intimate image due to the strong contrast between light and dark. The scale of the work reflects Wall’s interest in nineteenth-century art history: many important paintings from this period have a monumental size.

LARA ALMARCEGUI

Zaragoza 1972

Voor Ruins around Kröller-Müller Museum ging Almarcegui op zoek naar vervallen bouwwerken in de omgeving van het museum. In een reeks van veertig dia’s zijn zeventien gebouwen vastgelegd waarvan de locatie, voormalige functie en huidige staat staan beschreven op het bijbehorende tekstbord.

Almarcegui categoriseert een gebouw als een ruïne wanneer er gaten vallen in de muren of het dak. Het gebouw is zijn bescherming tegen de buitenwereld kwijt: de natuur kan binnendringen en er komt een proces op gang waarbij gebouw en natuur in elkaar overgaan. Door de gebouwen te fotograferen vereeuwigt Almarcegui de tijdelijke staat waarin ze zich op dat moment bevinden. Zo vestigt ze de aandacht op de onontkoombaarheid van het verglijden van de tijd.

Lang niet allemaal beantwoorden de gefotografeerde gebouwen aan het romantische ideaalbeeld van een ruïne. Bij sommige is het proces van verval nog maar net begonnen, andere zijn het stadium van ruïne ver voorbij en lijken eerder op een berg puin.

For Ruins around Kröller-Müller Museum, Almarcegui went in search of dilapidated buildings in the vicinity of the museum.

In a series of forty slides, she documented seventeen buildings, the location, previous function and current state of which are described on the accompanying text board.

Almarcegui categorizes a building as a ruin when holes appear in the walls or roof. The building has then lost its protection against the outside world: the nature can intrude and a process begins in which building and nature merge together. By photographing the buildings, Almarcegui immortalizes the temporary state of the building at that moment. Thus she draws attention to the inevitability of the passing of time.

Many of the buildings photographed are far from the romantic ideal of a ruin. In some, the process of decay has just begun, while others are well beyond the stage of being a ruin and look more like a pile of rubble.

MARINUS BOEZEM

Leerdam 1934

Tussen 1984 en 1986 bezoekt Marinus Boezem eenentwintig Cisterciënzer kloosters in Frankrijk, België en Nederland. La lumière Cistercienne bestaat uit de plattegronden van de kerken van deze kloosters, geëtst in glasplaten. Boezem vat een plattegrond op als een platte sculptuur. Door de relatief grote afstand tussen de glasplaten en het onderliggende papier werpen de geëtste lijnen een schaduw op het ondervlak, waarmee een bijna ruimtelijk beeld ontstaat.

Het licht bepaalt het ritme van de dag van de monniken in een Cisterciënzer klooster, die leven volgens de regels van Bernardus van Clairvaux. Het licht is in zijn overtuiging de verbinding tussen de mens en God. Het moet daarom zo overvloedig mogelijk de kerk binnenstromen.

In La lumière Cistercienne bepaalt het licht de ervaring van het beeld. In tegenstelling tot het natuurlijke licht is het museale kunstlicht echter statisch. In plaats van een natuurlijk ritme is er sprake van een geënsceneerde situatie waarin veranderlijkheid vervangen is door een constante onveranderlijkheid.

Between 1984 and 1986, Marinus Boezem visited twentyone Cistercian monasteries in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. La lumière Cistercienne (The Cistercian light) consists of the floor plans of the churches of these monasteries, etched into glass plates. Boezem regards a floor plan as a flat sculpture. Due to the relatively large distance between the glass plates and the backing paper, the etched lines cast a shadow onto the background, creating an almost spatial image.

Light determines the daily rhythm of the monks in a Cistercian monastery, who live according to the teachings of Bernard of Clairvaux. In his belief, light represents the connection between humans and God. Therefore it must pour into the church as abundantly as possible.

In La lumière Cistercienne (The Cistercian light), light determines the experience of the image. However, unlike natural light, the artificial light in the museum is static.

Instead of a natural rhythm, there is a staged situation in which changeability is replaced by a constant perpetuity.

PIERRE HUYGHE

Paris 1962

Sinds 2003 wordt in Streamside Knolls op 11 oktober Streamside day gevierd: een feestdag die Pierre Huyghe speciaal bedacht voor deze ‘new town’ in het bos aan de Hudson ten noorden van New York. Kort daarop maakt Huyghe deze film.

Since 2003, Streamside day has been celebrated on 11 October in Streamside Knolls: a festival that Pierre Huyghe conceived specifically for this new town in the forest on the Hudson River north of New York. Huyghe made this film shortly afterwards.

In het eerste deel loopt een hertje een pand in aanbouw binnen en verhuist een familie naar een nieuw huis in het bos. Twee bewegingen, in tegenovergestelde richting: de ene vanuit de natuur, de andere juist naar de natuur toe.

In the first part, a deer walks into a building under construction and a family moves to their new home in the forest. Two relocations, but in opposite directions: one out of nature, the other into nature.

In het tweede deel van de film zien we de eerste viering van Streamside day: een boom wordt geplant als markering van een nieuw begin, er worden toespraken gehouden en er is een optocht. Huyghe legt de ambivalentie bloot van de wens om in de natuur te willen leven door er een geheel nieuwe wijk in aan te leggen.

In the second part of the film, we see the first ever celebration of Streamside day: a tree is planted to mark a new beginning, speeches are given and there is a parade.

Huyghe exposes the inconsistency of the desire to live in nature by building an entirely new neighbourhood there.

De tekening verbeeldt een concept voor Streamside community center, dat Huyghe ontwierp voor Streamside Knolls, maar dat nooit werd gerealiseerd.
