Kristina Kvavle Pinegar landscape architecture portfolio
Designing from a sense of place, I believe landscape architecture should respect and collaborate with community members understanding the history and culture of that people and land on multiple scales. I advocate for early literacy, connection to the natural world, and an equitable distribution of local resources recognizing these things are essential to resilient neighborhoods. These resources include functional and creative storm water solutions, considerately designed corridors, and engaging civic programming at libraries, community centers and parks. I have witnessed flexible public spaces

that increase safety and support vibrant, connected communities. This is work I strive to be a part of now and in my future endeavors.

Ramwood Trails
Design 2 - Spring 2021
Professor Richard Newton Jefferson Campus, Philadelphia, PA Located across the street from Jefferson’s main campus in East Falls lies the ruins of an estate and cowpaths connecting to the Wissihickon Trail System. This first year design studio focused on foundational skills and experiential qualities, photography and hand drawing to gain a sense place. My trail design provided early opportunities for grading and modeling. This trail was a special experience researching what accommodations might be made for someone who is vision impaired to walk a sensory trail. 3

Baker Reimagined
Design 4 - Spring 2022
Professor Rebekah Armstrong Hestonville, Philadelphia, PA
This project was a wonderful opportunity to engage with the community in the Hestonville neighborhood of Philadelphia. The first half of the semester I worked with Julia Jackson to research and create a network of hubs throughout the area. We recognized early on the benefits of using the Heston School catchment - or “schoolshed” - as our boundary for community circulation and resources.

My work in the second half of the semester focused on revitalizing Baker Playground. Returning to roots of basketball for the namesake of the park, I redesigned the outdoor court to allow seating, added a half indoor court for all-weather play, and recommended a community center. I also added an educational walkway over the rain garden. Openness was at the heart of all interventions at Baker.

Pollinator Path Sustainable Planting Design - Spring 2023
Professor Kimberlee Douglas 84th+Lindberg, Philadelphia, PA Emmie Voss and I collaborated to design a Pollinator Pathway along a busy road in Philadelphia in this multidisciplinary course. I selected plants with the intention of creating colorful interest for visitors throughout all four seasons. Sections were hand drawn and painted. This was also a great opportunity to learn how to create a plant schedule and design plant massings based on proximity to the road and sun or shade.

A+D and the Phantom Tree Urban Hydrology - Fall 2023
Professor Guillermo Rodriguez Thomas Jefferson University Inspired by a menace puddle that forms on Jefferson campus in front of our design building every time it rains, Emmie Voss and I designed a rain garden in memoriam of a large tree that shows up on early base maps of the campus. We calculated run off and surface area to determine garden size and necessary soil depth. Native moisture loving plants were selected to surround a catalpa tree with attention given to the experience of viewing the garden from the pathway and the windows above.

Living Connections
Design 6/8 - Spring 2023 Kristina Kvavle Pinegar
Professor Richard Newton Malawi This multidisciplinary studio combined 5th year architects, masters of sustainable design and landscape architecture students. Staying open and curious, I was motivated to study settlement patterns early on in the semester. My project focused on community design in collaboration with the natural ways people and water gather + flow + work through settlements in Malawi. The highlight of this studio was the opportunity to study abroad in the beautiful country of Malawi in March 2023. 15
