moments+places Exploring our personal histories and reaching into memory, as a studio we examined why we react to places and how particular settings in A Wonderful Place- fluence our experience and Multnomah Falls, Oregon preferences.

drawing examples Using instructions from Betty Edwards in her book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, practice with perspective, finding negative space, and utilizing a viewfinder helped to improve drawing skills.

experiencing, perceiving recording place Using personal photographs taken on site near campus, various themes were explored. Some include: transparency, gathering, atmosphere, convergence, light, texture, perspective, symmetry and scale.

gestural drawings+ 3D models Exploring gestural charcoal markings, various moods and themes were achieved. The drawings were then cut, shaped, glued and photographed creating a variety of landscape-like images.

inventory+analysis Group Project: Logan Lewis Jacob Panora Darius Abrams As a studio, we analyzed and compiled an inventory of a specific site near Thomas Jefferson University, East Falls Campus. We explored the history, climate, geology, soil, hydrology, flora, fauna, circulation and demographics of the area.

plan+transect Pacing out a 40 foot square section on site, as a studio we learned how to triangulate distance and respresent that distance through drawings.

siting experience woodland overlook Based on an imaginary location on site, a moment was explored through sketching, modeling and photography. The challenge was to represent what it might feel like to be in that place.

walking advocacy After being taught about the many benefits of walking by the head of the Occupational Therapy department at Jefferson, our studio created individual walking advocacy posters.

trail transect, materiality+place Exploring the process of calculating elevation and distance to understand grading of a specific area of the site, we then created accurate transects of moments along the trail.

manifesto: “If facts are seeds that later produce knowledge and wisdom, . . .then the emotions and impressions of the senses are the fertile soil in which the seed must grow.” - Rachel Carson, The Sense of Wonder

ramwood trails trail route, notation +topography The final weeks of the semester combined knowledge and experience gained along the way. Analyzing the site and understanding place was important when considering how to position a trail. Smooth footings handrails and braille on signage created an engaging and safe experience for the visually impaired and others on these intergenerational trails. Moments for connection to senses and each other were thoughtfully placed for those walking the path in the least invasive way possible. The geology of the Wissahickon Valley presents a topography rich in opportunities and challenges. The overall trail design, while only .29 miles, responds to the land in a way that allows visitors to feel connected to their senses and this uniquely beautiful setting.
