Problem Space

From coffee cups to utensils to straws to takeaway boxes. The amount of plastic used on a daily basis at Georgia Tech is abundant and excessive. Not to mention damaging for our poor Mother Earth. We are targeting our project towards Waste on Georgia Tech Campus. Lets #BreakUpWithPlastic

Employees: paid, rules, regulations, lack of say + power, quick service + routine. (hired by larger corporations) Faculty: more power + storage space more authority, role model + image. Guests: even more ignorance/unaware Students: convenience, practicality, cleanliness, memory, ignorance (absentminded, unaware), lack of alternatives options? Research 1

Social Media

Keepcup is an Australian company that creates reusable cups. What inspired us was their large social media presence and brand identity. They are an engaging company with a captivating website. Amongst other things a feature we liked was their Impact Calculator.

Research 2

#Hashtag

Another project that was inspiring to us, was a feminist initiative to start conversation around how women are perceived. It consists of a hashtag and a clever illustration: #ItWasNeverADress. Another aspect of the project that was inspiring was their engagement with the community. On their website, women are able to share their own story around their “challenges, indignities and triumphs about being a woman.

Project

Drawing inspiration from our research we came up with our final concept. Through a focused social media and poster campaign, my team and I hoped to build awareness to switch to sustainable materials. We created an impactful hashtag that got people’s attention. #BreakUpWithPlastic. We hoped to develop posters that were artistic and worthy of keeping. To do this we chose soft colors and simple fonts. With a minimalist tone, we wanted to create a tongue in cheek type campaign with clever copy.

Initial Designs

Some of our inital designs. Keeping to our aestheic but lacking in the personality and charater we wanted. We also made the decision to not only focus on plastic cups but expand it to all waste on campus.

9

Posters

For our posters, we kept a specific design language: using the same colour palette, font and visual aesthetic.

10

Posters

Another important aspect of our posters is the copy. Our theme for our project was to play with the idea of love and relationships. Where people have a toxic relationship with plastic. Each poster plays off this concept with a amplifying graphic. 11

Set of Posters

We had to make sure that each of the posters had a coherent visual language, so if you saw one of them, you would be able to recognise that they were in a series of posters.

12

Social Media A big goal of ours was to establish a strong social media presence too. Instagram is our main platform, as it is focused on creating a visual identity. We have different type of content. However all utlising our design language keeping to a unified aestethic. 13

User Engagement We also want to create engagement and thus a community. As a part of our social media campaign we encouraged people to share our posts, and in doing so, we contacted them and asked if they would share a story on how they #BrokeUpWithPlastic. We would then use their story and photo in one of our posts on the instagram.

Future Work

For future work, there are a few aspects of the project that we wanted to develop further if we had more time and resources.

Continue to post on Instagram to gain a larger social media presence. In addition, we would make sure to create a proper End to the campaign. This could be through a well thought out picture series on instagram or something that involved more users and showed an actual impact of the awareness campaign.

Could create a website to collect people’s stories of how they #BreakUpWithPlastic. Something similar to the #ItWasNeverADress campaign.

Create a how-to #BreakUpWithPlastic kit. 15

Future Work

Lastly, we wanted to use the poster designs and the visual design aesthetic of the campaign and apply them on merchandise. I.e. mugs, badges and stickers, reusable bottles, thermo-cups, tupperware or reusable bags.
