USEFUL TIPS How to select and use adhesives

Gluing is often the only way to connect materials. The advantage of an adhesive bond is its very small weight, uniform distribution of tension, impact and vibration resistance and total sealing properties. An adhesive bond will not stretch or wear down, and unlike a screw connection its surface is smooth and undamaged.

Preparation of surfaces to be glued The surface of ordinary industrial materials may not always be suitable for achieving good bonding. Proper pre-treatment of surfaces to be glued (such as cleaning of dirt, oil and loose particles with solvent or other active substance and roughening or priming) facilitates better absorption of the glue into pores and results in a more durable bonding layer. In such a way it is possible to avoid adhesive breaking of an adhesive bond.

Choosing an adhesive Pre-requisites for a good adhesive bond are properly prepared substrates, a suitable adhesive and a gluing method. It is important to choose an adhesive that is similar to that of the material to be glued.

When choosing an adhesive, the following should be assessed: • Properties of the material to be glued: porosity, stiffness, size and shape of the material and the weight of the piece.

• Properties of the adhesive: suitability for various materials, elasticity, processing time of the adhesive, curing speed and viscosity.

• Application of the adhesive bond and requirements of the durability of the adhesive bond, for example: whether it is exposed to indoor or outdoor conditions, moisture resistance, temperature resistance, resistance to UV radiation or movement of the structure.

What to remember when gluing: • • • •

An adhesive must be sufficiently liquid to facilitate wetting and bonding.

Solvents and water must be able to exit the adhesive joint.

To promote reaction, access of air humidity must be ensured.

To ensure bonding and to keep the surfaces to be glued together until the hardened glue is able to accomplish this task itself, the surfaces to be glued must be supported.

• It is important to test the bonding capacity of the adhesive with a surface and to determine the suitability of the product for the intended use.

• In outdoor conditions, the adhesive shall be applied vertically or at points to allow the water to flow out of the adhesive joint.

Gluing various materials Porous surfaces For porous surfaces most general construction adhesives may be used, as the porosity ensures the evaporation of water/solvent and, in the case of hybrid adhesives, access of moisture.

Non-porous surfaces To glue non-porous surfaces, hybrid or epoxy adhesives are the best, but when following the instructions a wider choice of adhesives may be used. In the case of two non-porous materials it is important to ensure suitable spacing between the surfaces (e.g. using a match) so that air humidity can access the joint or the solvent can escape from the joint.

The glue pattern should be thin so as when the surfaces are pressed together, the width of the adhesive does not exceed 3-4 mm.

In the case of a hybrid adhesive, a point-zigzag method can be used to reduce adhesive consumption and avoid adhesive being pressed out from the joint.

In the case of corners, adhesive stripes bond the fillet properly to the substrate.

In the case of high viscosity acrylic and hybrid adhesives, we recommend using a V-shaped adhesive tip. Cut the tip approx. 8-10 mm wide and 10-12 mm deep to form a triangle. This ensures better distribution of the adhesive and better initial bonding.

This type of adhesive is suitable for mounting larger and heavier pieces and for floors with a recess or ceiling fillets.

Acrylic and hybrid adhesives can also be applied to the surface as points and a zigzag pattern.

Ensuring safety To avoid health risks, pay attention to the following: 1. Wear gloves to avoid the adhesive coming into contact with the skin.

2. Wear goggles to protect your eyes.

3. Ventilate the room properly.

4. If necessary, wear a face mask to avoid inhaling the adhesive vapour.

5. Read the product safety cards.

The main advantage of acrylic adhesives is their environmentally friendly composition and favourable price. This type of construction adhesive is meant to be used mostly indoors. One of the bonding surfaces must be porous to facilitate the evaporation of water. After drying, the connection is very strong, rigid and reliable. Acrylic adhesives are odourless and can be finished with paint and used as fillers.

Use water or PENOSIL Premium Cleaning Wipes to remove fresh adhesive from surfaces and tools.

Hybrid sealants are characterised by the best immediate bonding and strong and elastic adhesive bonding. Such adhesives are user- and environmentally friendly and equally suited for use indoors and outdoors. Hybrid adhesives and adhesive sealants are suitable for many substrates and can also be used on wet substrates. The adhesive creates a solid and permanently elastic layer between the surfaces. To facilitate the curing of a hybrid adhesive, access of air humidity must be provided. Hybrid adhesives and adhesive sealants have very good vibration- and noise-dampening properties and UV and weather resistance.

Use organic solvents (such as acetone or PENOSIL Premium Cleaning Wipes) to remove uncured adhesive or adhesive sealant.

Solvent-based adhesives on the basis of synthetic rubber provide instant bonding and cure quickly a er the solvent has vaporised. Solvent-based adhesives can also be used in minus temperatures. One of the bonding surfaces must be porous to facilitate the evaporation of the solvent. The resulting bond is rigid and strong.

Use PENOSIL Premium Cleaning Wipes or organic solvents (such as white spirit or acetone) to remove fresh adhesive from surfaces and tools.

Floor and wall adhesives When installing floor and wall coverings using adhesive, the covering material and its thickness in particular must be taken into account. For installing thin materials a good choice is water-based adhesives with low viscosity, which are easy to apply and allow the covering material to be adjusted for some time after gluing. It is easy to apply waterbased adhesives with a notched trowel, roll or brush. The installed floor or wall covering must be treated with a pressure roller to ensure uniform contact.

When gluing different types of parquet it is important for the adhesive to have excellent viscosity and preserve some elasticity to cope with wood movement and reduce step noise. Water-based adhesives are not suitable for gluing parquet, as during curing moisture is emitted, which may damage wood. For applying parquet adhesives a notched trowel should always be used.

Foam adhesives are characterised by excellent adhesion properties and bonding to many different materials. When cured, foam adhesive is an excellent temperature and sound insulator. Another advantage of foam adhesive is its fast drying and significant tensile resistance. Adhesive bonding is strong and durable. Foam adhesives should be stored in a cool and dry place, avoiding contact with heat sources and direct sunlight.

Use PENOSIL Premium Foam Cleaner to remove uncured foam adhesive from surfaces and tools. Hands, clothes and the foam gun can be cleaned with PENOSIL Premium Cleaning Wipes.

Epoxy putties and adhesives Manually mixed and modelled fast-curing epoxy putty is meant to be used for quick, simple repairs and renovation work. The modelling clay-like consistency is convenient to handle. A er ďŹ nal curing the putty can be drilled, sawn, sanded, cut, painted and stained. Can be used indoors and outdoors.
