Project: Make a presentation! Search the Internet and find information about the minimum driving age in Ukraine. Do you think it should change?

Present your opinion to the class. Зробіть

мінімальний

According to official regulations, Ukrainian teenagers can start learning to drive a moped or motorcycle (categories A or A1) from the age of 16. However, to obtain a full car driving license (category B), they must reach 18 years old.

I believe the current rules are fair and appropriate:

- Beginning theory and practice training at 16 helps teenagers learn gradually. Shkola.in.ua

- Holding off on licenses for cars until 18 means individuals are more mature and safer behind the wheel.

- Lowering the age to 17 or earlier could increase road accidents and risk because of emotional immaturity or inexperience.

So, I don’t think Ukraine should change the minimum driving age. It's better to keep teenagers safe and well-prepared before they gain full driving independence.

I’m writing to invite you to a concert next week. The band Urban Hawks is playing live at The Madison Arena, and I really want to go. Would you like to come with me? I had never noticed the wooden box in the attic before . When we started packing everything in the house to move to our new address a month ago , I offered to help clean out the attic with my brother, Joss. That was when we found it. Shkola.in.ua It was under a broken table and there were old schoolbooks on it. We moved the table, put the books on the floor, and there it was. We were both curious to see what was inside. While we were staring at it, Joss picked it up. But as soon as he picked it up, he threw it on the floor again ! ‘There’s something in it!’ he shouted. ‘I heard a strange noise!’

At first , I didn’t believe him. I touched it but nothing happened, so I picked it up slowly. I was turning it upside down when I heard a sound too. My heart jumped! I had never felt so terrified in my life. ‘Let’s go downstairs!’ I said nervously. ‘No, let’s open it and see what’s inside!’ said Joss. He’s four years younger than I am, but he’s braver. We put the box between us and sat on the floor. It had a metal lock with a key in it. We turned the key and the lid opened slowly. We had only managed to take a quick look inside when we heard music coming from it. At that moment , Dad appeared at the door. ‘My old music box!’ he said happily. ‘It was a present from my grandparents on my fifth birthday! I thought I had lost it forever. Thanks, boys!’ he said.

The Parrot in the Park

Last Saturday, I went for a walk in the beautiful city park. The sun was shining brightly, and many people were there. I was walking slowly, enjoying the fresh air, when I saw something unusual under a big green tree. Shkola.in.ua

It was a small birdcage! I looked around nervously, but there was no one near it. Suddenly, I heard a soft voice: "Hello! Hello!" I was very surprised! Inside the cage was a colorful parrot, a beautiful red and blue bird!

The parrot looked a bit scared, so I gently picked up the cage. I decided to find its owner. First, I went to the park office, but nobody knew anything about the bird. Then, I put a small notice on the park's main gate.

Later that evening, I got a call! A very happy woman told me about her missing parrot, Polly. She described the bird perfectly. The next day, I returned Polly to her owner. The woman was so thankful! She gave me a big box of chocolates. It was an amazing day, and Polly was very lucky to find her way home!

The Invention of the Telephone

The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. The first words ever spoken over the telephone were: "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you." Bell said this to his assistant who was in another room. At first, the telephone was very simple and did not have buttons or a screen. It was made of metal and plastic, and it was used only to communicate with people through wires.

From Landlines to Mobile Phones Shkola in ua

A landline phone is connected to a house by a wire, so you cannot take it outside. A mobile phone uses radio waves, so you can carry it anywhere. The first mobile phone was invented in 1973 by Martin Cooper. It was very different from phones today; it was very big and heavy, like a brick, and you could only talk for a short time before the battery died. Over the years, phones have changed a lot. Now they are small, they have touchscreens, and we use them for the internet, games, and photos.

Telephones in Ukraine

I think the telephone is a very useful invention because it helps us stay connected with our family and friends, especially when they are far away. In Ukraine, telephone numbers usually have 10 digits (for example, 050 123 45 67).

If there is an emergency, you can call these numbers:

102 – Police

103 – Ambulance

112 – General emergency number

Are Smartphones Good or Bad for Teenagers?

Smartphones are the most popular gadgets among teenagers today. In my opinion, they are very useful devices, but they also have some disadvantages that we should think about.

There are many advantages to having a smartphone. Firstly, it is a great tool for education because you can easily find information for school projects or use a language learning website anywhere. Another advantage is that smartphones help us stay connected. You can communicate with friends and family through video calls or messages, which is very important if they live far away.

However, there are also some disadvantages. Firstly, smartphones can be a waste of time if teenagers spend all day on social media or playing games. Secondly, using a phone for too many hours can be bad for your eyes and back. For example, many teens stay up late and become "sleepyheads" the next morning because they were scrolling through their newsfeed instead of sleeping.

In conclusion, I believe that smartphones are useful and make our lives much easier. However, teenagers need to be careful and not use them too much. It is important to find a balance between the digital world and real life.

The United States Postal Service: A Journey

Through History

If you think the Royal Mail has a long history, wait until you hear about the United States Postal Service (USPS)! It is one of the oldest and most important organizations in American history.

The American postal service began even before the United States became a country. In 1775, the Second Continental Congress established the Post Office and named Benjamin Franklin as the first Postmaster General. Franklin was a very clever man who improved the service by creating faster routes and better systems for tracking letters.

One of the most exciting parts of American postal history is the Pony Express. In 1860, before there were trains or planes across the whole country, young men rode horses to deliver mail from Missouri to California. They had to ride very fast across mountains and deserts. Even though it only lasted for 18 months, it became a legendary part of the "Wild West." Shkola in ua

Today, the USPS is a massive operation that connects people across a huge continent. They deliver to over 160 million addresses across the USA every day. In the Grand Canyon, some mail is still delivered by mules because the paths are too narrow for trucks! Like the UK, the US has many special stamps, but unlike the Royal Mail, US stamps always show the name of the country ("USA") and the year they were printed.

Talk in pairs about the teenage brain. Use the ideas below. Поговоріть у парах

1. What are some differences between a teenage brain and an adult brain?

– A teenage brain is still developing. Teenagers often feel stronger emotions and can make quick decisions without thinking a lot. Adults usually think more calmly and carefully.

2. Do you think it’s important to do research on the teenage brain? Why? / Why not?

– Yes, I think it’s important. If we understand how teenage brains work, teachers and parents can help teenagers learn better and deal with stress.

3. What would you change at your school, so it better suits the teenage brain?

– I would start school later in the morning because teens need more sleep. I would also add more creative subjects like art and music to help with emotions. Shkola.in.ua

4. Do you know of any good study habits for teenagers? What are they?

• If you could go to one of the three camps in activity 1 which one would you choose? Why?

– I would choose the Filmmaking Camp because I really like movies and I’ve always wanted to know how they are made. It would be exciting to write, produce and direct my own short film. I think it would also be amazing to watch it at the screening at the end of the week.

• Do you think summer camps are a good learning experience for children? Shkola.in.ua

– Yes, I think summer camps are a very good learning experience. They give children a chance to try new activities, meet new people and learn skills that they can’t always practise at school. For example, in Space Camp you can build a robot, and in Martial Arts Camp you can learn to protect yourself. Camps also help children become more independent.

• Is there any other camp that you’d like to go to? Which one?

– Yes, I’d like to go to a sports camp, especially a football camp. Football is my favourite sport, and I think it would be great to train every day, learn from good coaches and play matches with other students. It would also be fun to make new friends who enjoy the same sport as me.

Smartphone: I can't live without my smartphone because it is my main tool for communication. I use it every day to check my newsfeed, send messages to friends, and contact people from all over the world. It is very important to me because I can find news stories and express my opinions instantly.

Laptop/Tablet: My laptop is essential for my education and school projects. I log in to the school platform every afternoon to upload homework and attach files. It is a great device because I can participate in learner communities and even visit science labs or museums online.

Game Console: I love my game console because it helps me relax and have fun after a long school day. I use it to play with my friends and share videos of our games. It is important to me because it is a fun way to socialise and connect with people who share my interests.

Smartwatch: I use my smartwatch to lead a healthy lifestyle and stay active. It tracks my regular exercise and reminds me to move when I've been sitting for too long. I also wear it when I go to bed to check my sleep, so I don't feel like a sleepyhead in the morning.

Headphones/Earbuds: My headphones are very important when I want to focus on my studies or relax with music. I use them to listen to interesting talks by scientists or simply to enjoy some "peace and quiet" in a loud place. They are my favorite gadget for traveling because they make any trip more pleasant.

TV: Even though I have many gadgets, I still like watching TV with my family. We usually turn it on in the evening to watch films or important news stories together. It is a traditional way for our family to socialise and spend time together at the end of the day.
