L.O.T.S. Recap: Shane Garza 24 and his team rehab Valley Village house – and pay forward on education

The annual celebration of NCAA basketball rolls out this month with every bit of the pageantry and fanfare it deserves and then some. From nail-biting conference tournaments to the drama of Selection Erik Hitzelberger Sunday to the endless discussions of “who busted whose bracket,” the sports world spends most of March focused on the pinnacle of collegiate basketball.

By the time you read this, the field in both the men’s and women’s bracket will be narrowed from 68. The remaining respective Sweet Sixteen teams will be poised to head into the final two weekends with every player, coach and fan focused on being the last team standing, cutting down the nets and hoisting the trophy. It is instructive to remember what we are watching is the culmination, not simply of the season, but of years and years of work. What we aren’t seeing is the countless hours shooting in the gym, the physical and mental conditioning, and the tireless effort of overcoming setbacks and pushing through obstacles. We should also note that the men and women who suit up this week are all winners regardless of the final score, and not in the participation medal sort of way. Millions of kids pick up a ball on the playground or in a gym every year. Only a fraction of 1% can say they made it to The Dance. These are the ones who chose to keep coming back to the court when everyone else decided it was easier to watch from the stands.
