fter 7 extraordinary VOCA publications, we are transitioning. Kréhon, SWIFT and VOCA as you formerly knew it, has merged into one amazing premium product. I am delighted to welcome you to our introductory issue of VOCA magazine! As #KréhonTeam we are extremely grateful for the journey up until this point and for every contributor to the initial VOCA product. As we’re heading in a new direction, I’d like to invite you on this journey to engage with us as we share some diverse, heartfelt, artistic and bold content with you as our readers. We aim to create content that appeals to young adults in a transparent, factual, and inviting manner. The title of the magazine is derived from the word ‘vocable’, which is a reference to ‘form rather than meaning’. Furthermore, it relates to any significant sound uttered by people, in the form of a word or term. At the core of our being, our hope is found in creating a platform for expression, inspired by wisdom, Biblical truths, unique stories and common interests. We aim to create content that will edify, challenge and captivate.

réhon is a faith-based brand targeted at the holistic life experience of people of all ages and from all walks of life. Founded by Mark Zion Michaels (Editor/ Director/Designer) in January 2016, “kréhon” is pronounced and inspired by the word “crayon” and is stylised with a lower case first letter (k). This God-inspired vision spent a good amount of time in its incubator before being set out on the horizon. Between mid 2017 and early 2018, Kréhon made a spontaneous appearance in all caps (KRÉHON), by showcasing ever yday individuals on dynamic covers (via Social Media), accompanied by a brief summary of who they are, where they come from and where they see themselves in future.

Finally, between April 2018 and April 2020, Kréhon launched and released 3 different online publications (via issuu.com / free of charge) which, in their unique respects, delivered diverse offerings pertaining to (the) body, soul, spirit, relationship and finance. These being considered the fundamental spheres of life as we know it.

E. “ M o o d ” - s h o w c a s i n g t h e kingdom culture of worship through music and creativity
Our parent publication “Kréhon” (a quar terly/seasonal edition) encompassed the last mentioned. These sections later evolved into: A. “Truth” - placing emphasis on subjects via the biblical standard of understanding B. “Flux” - focused on travel, style, home, business and technology C. “Face” - highlighting the pursuits and expressions of unique groups or individuals D. “ P u l s e ” - f e a t u r i n g t h e excitement and vitality of food, health and fitness
*In total, Kréhon Magazine executed 6 issues between April 2018 and December 2019. Its slogan/tagline “Life Edified” is the umbrella of Kréhon as a brand across the board. The first official cover of Kréhon Magazine featured the Grammy Award Winning producer and musician Rudy Currence from the United States. Every issue captured the growing interest of a wide group of readers (± 12 000 readers), locally and internationally.
12
issuu.com/krehon
The name of our sister publication “SWIFT” (a monthly edition) embodied the format of its focus and initiative: A. S for “Spotlight” - showcasing diverse role models locally and internationally B. W for “Wonder” - real life testimonies and uplifting stories of hope C. I for “Insight” - revelatory teachings and life-altering advice D. F for “Fiction” - fictional stories, poetry, book reviews and TV bar E. T for “Timeline” - a light-hearted look at what was, what is and what will be *SWIFT had a ‘swift’ run and released 3 issues from February 2020 to April 2020. Its slogan/ tagline “How About Now” aimed at making an instant yet lasting impact in the fast-paced world we live in today. SWIFT also hosted the 107.5 CCFm Radio Bar (which continues via a refreshed Kréhon format). This feature also saw Kréhon launching its first live/on-air radio segment “Kréhon Konversations” which will also take on a new term. Unlike Kréhon, which was populated with content from various journalists and non-journalists, SWIFT mainly had only 2 journalists/content creators: Mark Zion & Kay-Dee Mashile (former Executive Editor of SWIFT).
THE MARVEL ISSUE
VOCA Newspaper (weekly) became our third and final publication prior to transitioning to VOCA Magazine (now bimonthly). VOCA Newspaper consisted of consistent columns such as: A. “Top Story” - relevant coverage on current affairs and public knowledge B. “Sunshine Thoughts” - our Editor’s note of reflection and inspiration C. “BOT: Let’s get to the bottom of this” - zooming into matters of importance. D. “Creature Feature” - learning about and appreciating some lesser known mammals E. “Style Story” - featuring foodies, stylists/fashionistas, bookworms etc. F. “VOCA Sport” - headlined by a footballer’s blog starring Eleazar Rodgers G. And features like: “Picture Story, Poet Tree, Song Vine etc. H. “Cryptic Mountain” - drama series created by Mark Zion *As a newspaper, VOCA has been well received and enjoyed unique and continuous feedback and interaction, quickly catapulting into something greater. VOCA Volume 1 (No.1-7) welcomed #TeamKréhon’s first Managing Editor, Jaylee Gertse. Now in magazine format, VOCA kicks off with Volume 2 / Number 1 where Gertse now serves as Editor-in-Chief. The VOCA slogan “Be. Become. Behold” lives on in the pursuit of its vision. For new updates, other news and developments, follow us on social media (@krehonmedia) and continue to share the good stories with your friends and family. Stay tuned and watch this space.

“You’re tuned into 107.5 CCFm - your voice, your community, your station.” And that’s how you answer the phone, people! As if JASON PRETORIUS doesn’t have enough spice in his punch already, he has great timing, a great voice and a great sense of humour. I’ve had the privilege of “almost” sitting next to Jason at the CCFm Presenter’s Conference earlier this year (which he may not remember). I then had the pleasure to pick his brain and heart for 60 minutes on the phone during our much anticipated interview for Kréhon VOCA.

eing a qualified photographer as well as a registered counselor with a 4year degree in psychology (B.Sc.), it’s clear to see that Tatum Smith has a great passion for people and their unique journeys. Throughout the course of her studies and working experience, she has been able to balance the two with the goal of helping people in various ways. It all started with a really cheap Kodak camera which young Tatum

carried along to all her family gatherings. She had a blast recording special moments and these have always meant a lot to her. For Tatum, photography is all about documenting life, love and family. “The photos weren’t that great, yet they brought me so much joy and pleasant memories,” she says. “It’s like recording one’s life story and that’s where my pocket money went as a child,” she adds with glee.

matric (grade 12), photography was the top preference.

However, her family was skeptical seeing that it was a creative field. Along with their doubts and caution, Tatum herself realised that she would have to become really good at her craft in order to succeed and generate a stable income. During this time, she went into fear mode and ended up choosing something else. “Looking back, I now know that the road to professional photography was very expensive. I don’t think we would have been able to afford it anyway,” she says. “I may have been disappointed at the time, but when I eventually stepped into it, the timing was perfect,” she adds. Tatum’s decision to opt for Psychology had a lot to do with her core belief in the importance of leading a meaningful life. Meanwhile, photography was merely a creative outlet for fun. “In the past photography was just something I enjoyed doing. I didn’t grasp how it could add value to somebody’s life. Psychology, on the other hand, seemed more meaningful. It was very clear how it adds value to person’s life as it entails walking a journey with them, helping them and supporting them,” Tatum adds. When capturing families, Tatum’s goal is to bring forth the positive. “In life, it’s so easy to get caught up in the negatives,” she says. “Family means love. In my family, we have lots of love for each other. It is a continuous journey of learning how to express that to each other through the different ways in which we give and receive. This is shared in the gatherings, laughter and fun. These photographs play an important role. When you forget why you love someone or why you’ve committed to a specific person, you can go back to those moments and refresh your perspective. We know it also gets real, there are challenges, but you do life together and stay together

I'd been wanting to shoot this pathway into the ocean at Gordon's Bay beach for quite some time, but with landscapes, weather patterns play a major role. On this night, there was the most amazing sunset, but also lots of people running in front of my camera and walking onto the pathway. Of course, they did not realise I was making a 30 second exposure, which means I had to try many times and I actually walked away from this shoot thinking it did not work. After many months, I revisited it, and being in a different frame of mind and creative space, I was able to see something different in the images I took months before. This image was shot at 96mm, at f/22 for 30 seconds.

Quip Tip To capture landscapes, one would need a wide angle lens, preferably a camera that can accommodate manual settings, so that one has full creative control, a tripod/ sandbag to stabilise the camera during longer exposures, which is what I used in my landscape images, a wireless shutter release or a camera with a self-timer to p r e ve n t b l u r r y images and a love for nature, oh and lots of patience!

It felt as though every limb and organ that God has put together so lovingly was being torn apart by hands I could not see. I sat next to my bed, imitating a motion of someone trying to pick up pieces that was scattered, but there was nothing. My heart was burning up inside my chest, it was the first time I felt that kind of agony.

As the voice spoke, figures started adding up in my spirit. I was thirteen when it happened, I was smothered and had to fight a spiritual battle for thirteen years. It was so clear, the pain slowly resided. I spoke out loud what resounded in my spirit, once a day for six days, seven times on the seventh day. Add six to seven and it equals thirteen! I leaped in tears, on my twenty sixth birthday I received ‘my truth’, I received ‘my message’. I felt my Jericho tumbling down in my spirit, I saw the clear skies through my window. For thirteen years I looked to a wall, with one small window. The wall was great but ‘The Son’ was greater.

I have had very strange dreams about the earth that we live in. The
earth is talking out loud so we can hear. It shut us down because it is not looked after by many people and so that it and has time to breathe. What I mean
by breathe is to become healthy so that the earth can flourish, and nurture us. The earth gives food, if we are lucky three meals a day. All people need to make a difference and we have a little amount of time before the beaches, oceans, forests and all beings that live on earth can thrive. Marine animals are struggling to reproduce because in some parts of the world there is a large amount of rubbish in the oceans. The plastic cannot disintegrate in water. On land people have rubbish dumps and they bury the rubbish. It is not healthy for the earth and we must all help in someway or another. In places like the Arctic the polar regions are melting very fast and the climate is changing. Vehicles omits C02 which humans breathe in and that gas makes the ice melt very fast. When there were dinosaurs on the earth, the earth was happy and clean there was no plastic and machines. It was very nice. When the ancient people were on the earth they made things that would not harm the earth. They used straw and material that did not hurt the earth. When we have all tried to help clean the earth, the earth will thrive.

Do a negativity detox
Interest CREATE A TRUTH FILTER FOR ALL THAT YOU TAKE IN When looking at the news or social media posts, how do you differentiate between what is true and what is false? Perhaps you don’t have the time or energy to fact check every single piece of information you receive, but you should be more careful about what you let into your mind as truth. You owe yourself the courtesy to at least try and create a tool that helps you discern between what is true, and what isn’t. UNFOLLOW PEOPLE WHO POST NEGATIVE CONTENT An easy filter is simply unfriending or unfollowing the people whose posts leave you feeling negative and discouraged. Protect your mental health by limiting the amount of content you come across on your social media feed. As we continue to cut down physical contact, perhaps one should also look into cutting down negative emotional contact by social distancing on virtual spaces. LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF NEWS YOU WATCH An easy way to keep negativity out is to avoid

watching the news, especially since it is most likely to be repeated each and every day. Block your news app from sending you notifications and rather choose when and what news you want to watch and/or read. Chances are, whatever you watch at 6 p.m. is probably the same news reported throughout the day, perhaps just with different statistics. LOOK FOR THE POSITIVES As we all know, avoidance is as good as nothing when you aren’t actively pursuing anything. So, favour the sites and social media accounts that motivate and encourage you throughout this time. Be intentional about consuming positive content.

truth is that things may possibly never be the way they were, church may not go back to
normal services at least until next year, concerts, movies and sporting events may also quickly become things of the past. Many stores and businesses may well have (sadly) closed their doors for good just before lock down. We may well be walking around masked up and wearing gloves for the greater part of this year. A short history of Electric Vehicles
I
t’s hard to pinpoint the invention of the electric car to one inventor or country. Instead it was a series of breakthroughs -- from the battery to
the electric motor -- in the 1800s that led to the first electric vehicle on the road. In the early part of the century, innovators in Hungary, the Netherlands and the United States -- including a blacksmith from Vermont -- began toying with the concept of a battery-powered vehicle and created some of the first smallscale electric cars. And while Robert Anderson, a British inventor, developed the first crude electric carriage around this same time, it wasn’t until the second half of the 19th century that French and English inventors built some of the first practical electric cars. In the U.S., the first successful electric car made its debut around 1890 thanks to William Morrison, a chemist who lived in

My beloved, my king, my brave warrior
I respect how you reset your ways
We’ve shared close to 4000 sunrises in holy matrimony
During the times you may step out of line
And after every sunset, I said Yes to you, again and again
You quickly reflect
I said Yes to your strength, your courage
on the stains of your “husband-jacket”
I said Yes to your constant presence and protection
And I quickly come along
I said Yes to your simplicity and your proficiency
to polish your badge of honour
I said Yes to your vision and your destiny
As you consciously align yourself
I said Yes to being the nurturer of your children
in the wisdom of your Tailor
I said Yes to doing my best as your better half I said Yes to complementing your wholeness
The proof is certainly in the pudding And in the breakfast you prepare for me,
I spoke to God about you, I still do
every single morning
I witness your effortless growth
Except on Father’s Day, of course, when it’s my turn
In and out of season, you’ve been planted
To serve you cheerfully, gratefully and favourably
And fruitful in the statutes of our Father
And most importantly, admirably
A prayer had become the foundation of our partnership
When I think of how you love your children
A wish had become a memory
unconditionally
in the library of our oneness
More than you love your afternoon naps and my curly hair
I love how you love what is right
You wouldn’t trade a single minute
A faithful man who nullifies lies with truth
of your time with them
You never cease to burn
And just like my curly hair,
with the love and light of God’s word
they are your pride and joy, abundantly
Oh how refreshing it is when you wash me with His word
I married a man who is a man of his word
You make my heart dance
Whether those words are serious or hilarious
at the sound of your love for Elohim
Your sharp sense of humour has me in stitches!
When we’re all asleep
Takes me to places I am yet to experience
and the stars shine at their brightest,
All that laughter has strengthened us
You awaken the dreams, breakthroughs
Even when many have doubted us
and victories of others
Yet here we are; sober, stronger and bolder
As you devote extra hours,
Higher than cloud nine
interceding for those laid upon your heart
and brighter than a thousand moons And out of all the Andrew’s in the world,
Your ministry is a tapestry of sacrificial love
I only say Yes to you
The fruit of the Spirit resides there And so does my smile and my servanthood I am inspired by your drive for detail and solution
Congratulations, Andrew & Ferana! God bless you and increase his shine upon your glorious union. Thank you for being an inspiration to many!
You carry the key of punctuality, unlocking productivity Your firm hand upon any situation spurs me on Makes me latch onto you with greater joy and purpose One of the privileges of being equally yoked
