CULTURAL REDEMPTION AND SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION

South Roots International is a non-profit company with NPO and PBO status, established in 1997 in Roodewal, Worcester in the Western Cape. They are connected to Island Breeze International (A ministry that also uses cultural expression to glorify God). Through the use of musical theatre and different forms of art, such as drama, music, indigenous dancing (like the ‘riel-‘and Zulu dances) and poetry, these performing artists bridge the cultural divides that formed over the years in South Africa. These cultural expressions make it possible for the South Roots team to use art as a powerful tool to touch the hearts of people and share the message of the gospel in relatable ways.

The South Roots team utilises their ministry through art to reconcile. One of the manners in which they activate this ministry is through social transformation. Nicole Sacco notes the team uses performing arts to teach life skills, and provide mentorship and discipleship to the people in the communities where they minister (predominantly in the communities of Roodewal and Pelican Park, Cape Town).

Some of these models includes musical theatre, educational storytelling, mother and daughter camps, matric motivations, art workshops, Youth environment camps (focussed on boys), performing arts and heritage camps as well as an early childhood development priority, etc. These models are implemented in schools, at seminars, through community projects, productions and workshops.

When South Roots was established in the Roodewal community (1997) they focussed on the above mentioned models and community outreaches to activate the aim of cultural redemption and social transformation. Many of the current South Roots members were part of these specific outreach programs as children and teens. The mere fact that they are active team members as adults is a testament of the deep impact the program had in the Roodewal community.

Now based in Pelican Park, a group of young boys and girls (separately) receive impactful sessions from the team, a few times a week. These sessions are characterised by a focus on music, Biblical foundation through art courses and other life skills (as previously mentioned). It’s evident that though musical art is foundational, mentorship, discipleship, and sharing the gospel plays a significant role in the ministry of South Roots with a further focus on identity, purpose and destiny.

have seen and cried enough. Homeless people don’t just need a house. They need a loving community that sees them as people, not statistics to overlook and give up on. They are people, not a project.

A lot of us think poverty is not having food, money or a house, but the greatest poverty is feeling unwanted or unloved. That’s what homeless people feel every day when we pass them on the street; rejection. It hurts to feel invisible. They need a hand up, not just a hand-out. They long for relationships, your things/objects/products are the least of their worries, really.

Let’s not sit on the side of the road and say it’s not our problem. All of it happens to be our problem. Let’s help. Let’s acknowledge them as human beings, not bums. Let’s smile at them, not frown and give them an attitude. Don’t let the fear in you create an image of who you think they are; they are not criminals. Yes, they have a past, as do you. As the saying goes: “Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future.” So give them a chance like someone gave you one.

Ooey-Gooey Cinnamon Buns Yield: 12 buns Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 35 min Rise Time: 2 hrs

[VEGAN, SOY-FREE, NUT-FREE]

Total Time: 3 hrs INGREDIENTS 1 cup (250 mL) unsweetened plant-based milk 1 Tbsp (7 g) quick yeast 3 cups (375 g) plain all-purpose flour ¼ cup (50 g) raw sugar 2 tsp (8 g) baking powder 1 tsp (4 g) salt ¼ cup (60 ml) coconut oil, melted ¼ cup (60 mL) unsweetened plant-based milk 1 Tbsp (15 mL) maple syrup FILLING 1 cup (220 g) brown sugar, packed ½ cup (65 g) chopped pecans (optional) 2 tsp (8 g) ground cinnamon ¼ cup (60 mL) coconut oil, melted

OPTIONAL ICING TOPPING 1 cup (120 g) powdered confectioners icing sugar 3 Tbsp (45 mL) vegan margarine 1 Tbsp (15 mL) unsweetened plant-based milk 1 tsp (5 mL) clear vanilla extract (can substitute with regular pure vanilla extract) DIRECTIONS 1. Heat 1 cup (250 mL) plant milk in sauce pan until just steaming. Do not boil - you're aiming for a “warm bath” temperature. Too hot and you will kill your yeast. If it’s too hot, simply let it cool.

Remove the milk from the heat and sprinkle the yeast over the milk, swirl to combine and let sit for 5 minutes.

2. While yeast mixture is resting, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

3. When yeast mixture is foamy, add to the flour mixture along with the melted coconut oil and

combine until a smooth dough is formed. Cover and let rest for 1 hour.

4. While dough is resting, combine the brown sugar, pecans, and cinnamon in a small bowl. Set aside.

5. Place dough onto a floured surface and dust with a bit more flour. Use a rolling pin to roll into a 1/2 cm thick rectangle.

6. Use a small bit of the melted coconut oil to oil the inside of your baking dish, then spread the rest across the rolled out dough (it looks like a lot, but that's okay!). Top with the brown sugar and pecan mixture.

7. Gently roll up and cut into 12 buns, about 1&1/2 inches (3 cm) thick. Place each bun into the baking dish, then cover with a cloth and let rest for another hour.

8. While buns are resting, mix together the remaining 1/4 cup (60 mL) plant milk and maple syrup. Set aside.

9. Bake buns at 350°F (180°C) for 10 minutes, then pour or spoon the milk and syrup mixture over the buns and bake until tops of the buns are golden, about 20 - 25 minutes.

10. While buns are baking, whisk together the icing ingredients.

NOTES 1. Storage: Keep in an air-tight container for up to 3 days.

2. Variations: substitute the pecans for cranberries, pumpkin seeds, other nuts or chocolate chips. Add in other spices like cardamon or ginger. Try infusing the milk with cinnamon sticks, ginger, cardamon pods or chai-spiced tea bags.
