1. Who is Astrid Claasen? What are you passionate about?

Astrid Claasen is a 24-year old girl, born and raised in the City of Cape Town. I recently graduated from the University of Cape Town, with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education, specialising in Western Classical music. I'm currently teaching English online to students from all over the world, whilst managing my small handcrafted earring business. These separate elds express my love for teaching, music, languages, and the deepest desire to always CREATE. I have a wide perspective on life, which is based on my belief in Christ and the people that I have been able to surround myself with.

My lenses are controlled by my upbringing, life experiences, and most importantly, my faith.

2. What do you value most in life and why?

The thing I value the most in life, and especially at this point in my life, is authenticity. I believe the world is lled with so much information and trends that often corrupt our image and life conduct. I am a rm believer in trueness. To me, authenticity is no pretence or trying to be overly con dent to prove that one embraces thyself, but to me, authenticity is when you can demonstrate the trueness of your inner-most being, regardless of its shape or form.

6. Tell us about the materials you use and the message you wish to convey through them?

I use polymer clay to craft my designs, which require some TLC. The material can be tricky to work with, but with much patience and passion, I get through it! I was never acquainted with this type of clay and how it needs to be treated, but the more I informed myself and learned how to manipulate the clay, I started to see how amazing the material is.

Though polymer clay does not come from the ground, it is still very raw before the crafter touches it. I believe this makes the material one with the authenticity my brand wishes to emanate.

7. Where do you see HERMOSA going within the next 6 to 12 months?

I de nitely see HERMOSA in local and potentially national stores and selling online! My ideas and plans never run out, so I know that much will still be happening for us. I am also hoping to expand the business and my designs into the world of Fashion, with more high-end and extravagant earrings, meant for the runway! Let me not spill the beans too much!

9. What is your personal favourite HERMOSA item / piece and why?

We have over 60 designs, so choosing a favourite is quite di cult, however, I think I would probably choose the 4Piece Geometric set from my mini African Collection. I particularly like this set as it resembles a con dent woman.

Its geometric structures resemble strength and stability, but the colours are not too ashy. It's simple, without being basic. I think that's me!

10. Which local or international designers would you like to collaborate with?

I’d love to work with two local brands, Xquisite Creations by Marianna Edwards as well as Frens Oikos by Frenticia Claasen. They are inspirational women with incredible talent

11. What is your definition of a go-getter and what motivates you to get up and pursue your goals each day?

My de nition of a go-getter is someone who materialises their dreams. There is nothing on this planet that frustrates me more, than a desire without feet. Mobility is key. People believe you need to have EVERYTHING in place before you launch or make something happen. This is a big myth and leads to so much procrastination. My philosophy is, TO JUST START! If you make mistakes along the way, so be it! At least your dreams are not going to the grave (ouch!). My motivation to get up every morning comes from life itself and my hunger to see what will entice or challenge me.

Every day is a mystery untold and I’m curious!

12. How would you encourage other young entrepreneurs to pursue their dreams?

“

MY PHILOSOPHY IS, TO JUST START! IF YOU MAKE MISTAKES ALONG THE WAY, SO BE IT! AT LEAST YOUR DREAMS ARE NOT GOING TO THE GRAVE (OUCH!).

In my humble opinion, I would encourage young entrepreneurs to eradicate doubts or fears. Within our society, it's very easy to feel discouraged when you don't have support or enough resources to materialise what you have in your heart, but it's important to make the necessary sacri ces like working extra hours, equipping yourself, saving money, educating yourself and attracting life and opportunities to yourself by being a person of order. Order attracts opportunities and opportunities bring exposure. Nothing falls from the sky, “if you want it, go and get it!”

of the year, and I must admit, I sure do too. After bracing the cold for a good few months, it is so relieving to feel the days getting warmer, and the afternoons longer. Spring season has arrived in full glory with the promise of summer just around

the corner. The time of new birth and emerging from hibernation as food sources become more plenteous. Carpets and veils of the most vibrant owers foreshowing the soon arrival of the most loved season with its delicate fruit, summer. It is just a melodious time buzzing with excitement, transformation and expectation. There is an undeniable vibrancy and buoyancy in the air that is pregnant with potential and does much to raise our hope for better days.

Due to the changes that happen in nature during springtime, this season

is seen as a time of rebirth and renewal. Other abstract themes that are associated with spring are love, youth, growth and hope. As a direct cause of the change in climate and the lighter air, our dispositions become more pleasant. We become of higher spirits and our mood is lifted. Our need and desire to engage in especially outdoor activities elevates, and as a result, we become more satis ed and lled with meaning. There is an unspoken but reassuring promise that everything can begin again. That all that was once lost, through the natural processes, shall be renewed once more. This knowledge allows us to comfortably let go of the old and embrace the winds of change and the newness they o er to bring.

However, there is harshness that needs to be endured before embracing the freshness of the new day. There are seeds that need to experience cold,

However, in the same breath, for some this period may have provided the necessary pressure to push them beyond their comfort zone, think outside of the box and sprout and bloom in ways unimagined before. With nothing more to lose and stability already compromised, the prospective reward and gain now seemed greater than the projected risk and loss. To me, this pandemic has been a reminder that tough times make us - or force us to become durable and more resilient. The su ering produces character and it is this character that produces hope (Romans 5).

WITH ALL OF THAT SAID, I’D LIKE TO SHARE SOME POINTERS ON HOW TO ATTEMPT FISHING AS A HOBBY IF IT’S SOMETHING YOU ARE INTERESTED IN. 1. South Africa is lled with great freshwater systems, most commonly known is the Vaal system. Fishing spots along the Vaalriver are the best for freshwater carp, barber, muddy and yellow sh. Your rst step is to look up a shing resort along the Vaalriver, or any great dam near you in South Africa.

2. The second step is just as easy, walk into any tackle shop in the country and meet one of our great anglers, ready to give you advice on which rods, baits, and gear to buy as a beginner. Share your budget with them and they will get you the best gear according to your budget.

3. Step three, invite some friends and family, buy all your food and refreshments, and start packing.

4. And nally go and enjoy it.

An extremely important point to keep in mind is that shing is about more than just catching a sh. It's about the fellowship with friends and family, enjoying the beautiful scenery, maybe doing a boat ride or even swimming (if it is safe to do so). Most importantly it's about lighting that Braai next to the calmness of the river. Go for it!

Following significant realisation, I decided that it would be best for me to combine these two factors as one and to make it work for my benefit. Since that day, I’ve embraced my disability wholeheartedly. My name is Quaide Rumble, I am a 23-year-old, born and raised in Elsies River, Cape Town. I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when I was a mere 8-month-old baby, so naturally I do not know what it’s like to have typical mobility in my legs. I feel called to use my gifts to impact others by just being myself, because within myself there are many gifts and I think just being con dent in who I am as a disabled person alone is a gift.

Perseverance and working through my own insecurities has led me to become super comfortable and con dent in my own skin. I feel called to help other people see beyond their shortcomings, to encourage them to believe in themselves, to feel con dent and not pay attention to what other people may think or say about them. As you grow into becoming the best version yourself, you gain greater knowledge which gradually helps you to make better choices. I would not want to use my gifts for sel sh gain or super cial interests, but I’m excited about enjoying my own music and releasing content via my podcast/radio show. My aim is to make people laugh, even to the point where I too would nd joy in what I produce when I listen back to my own music or podcast.

ur friends have challenged us to be vulnerable and love well, to the point we don't give them food or clothes that we wouldn't eat or wear. They’re not beggars, they’re our neighbours. We often hear, “beggars shouldn't be choosers” but we don't believe

in that. We are of the opinion, just because you are homeless doesn't mean you deserve less and don't have the right to choose. We believe the homeless have the right to pick what they want to eat or wear what they want. One of the things we like hearing in the morning is, “mommy, I'm home” said to Katlyn in the morning when they arrive at the service centre.

Some of these homeless friends are older than Katlyn and it's strange when they refer to her as mommy, but there is a child in each of them crying out ‘Abba Father’, longing to be free and belong somewhere, yearning for parental care, because most of them grow up as orphans on the street.

That's what God has called Katlyn and I to be, spiritual parents, not managers or bosses but to mother and father those who are lost and wanting to come back home. The people part of the foundation aren't viewed as clients but as family.

You see, some people don't want to be homeless, but the system is designed to make people homeless so that people can pro t out of them and it’s also easy to control, exploit and manipulate people who are less educated, voiceless, and poor, thus this mindset of, ‘why would I help you heal if I can make money out of your sickness?’ Therefore, it's hard to help some people on the street because they feel used, not helped. Their physical needs are met but not their spiritual, emotional, and psychological needs. That’s why we say we need more rehab centres, not just shelters that focus on statistics. Our friends have taught us to never do something for a homeless person without a homeless person, they are not stupid or useless and most of the time have the best solution out of their problem. If we don't humble ourselves and create a non-judgmental place to help them, we will end up giving them the wrong medication and blaming them for not changing or healing. So, we have learned to pull back, be cheerleaders and not saviours. We know we can't change them, but we can create a loving environment for them to ourish. We also had to accept the fact that we can’t get all of them o the street and we need to focus on one person at a time and be persistent and consistent.

O

ne of the biggest mistakes people make with homeless people is that we judge them based on the fruit (behaviour) and don't look at the root (main problem). You see, no child dreams of being a gangster, drug addict, dealer, or even homeless, but if they’re born in a poor and violent environment without a father and/or mother, they’re likely to become a product of that environment. Unfortunately, we live in a society that punishes people for not growing in a toxic environment. The truth is this country is still healing from apartheid. We have generational curses and trauma that we need to heal from and until we heal, we will continue to hurt one another. We can't continue to blame people for being addicts when we know that they were paid with alcohol for their land, so rather than judging people for being homeless because of trauma and drugs, we need to take responsibility and help heal this land.

We invest too much money in security companies to protect us from people who are hurting instead of using that money to rehabilitate them. All we do is put a bandage on a wound that needs surgery, and we wonder why homelessness isn't going down. We need to attack homelessness, not homeless people. We need

to be frustrated with poverty, not poor people. We need to ght injustice and not protect those who pro t from the cries of the poor. The rst question is not why the addiction, the question is why the pain and realising that addiction, gangsterism, and homelessness are attempts to solve the root problem and that problem is emotional pain. For this reason, we need to educate people on mental illness and stop demonising homeless people who have mental health challenges and addiction and sending them to prison rather than rehab. We have realised that homelessness is a community issue, not just an individual problem and if we don't work together as a community, we will fail.

Therefore, we have invested our time, resources, and knowledge in working with other like minded nonpro t organisations, churches, businesses, and social development to end homelessness in Cape Town. This is necessary because homelessness is becoming a pandemic all over the world because of Covid-19, unemployment, poverty, and crime. We can no longer ignore homelessness and we need to co-labour, instead of pointing ngers but work together to address the inequality, injustice and the trauma of this country that has led many to addiction, mental illness, and homelessness.

WE ALL HAVE PEOPLE IN OUR LIVES that we call friends, but what is friendship? Friendship is where the formalities fall away and are forgotten and individuals simply enjoy one another’s presence. A friend is someone that loves you genuinely and delights in honouring and sharpening you daily. To love someone genuinely means that it is not fake, it’s authentic and sincere. A friend will nd great pleasure in treating you with respect all while sharpening you with truth and wisdom. Friendship reminds me of community because it has to do with two individuals that willingly take part in each other’s lives as they both share their thoughts and experiences with one another. Furthermore, developing a sense of belonging and connection amongst each other. Although I do not think that is all friendship is characterised by. Friendship is also made up of support, honesty, communication and vulnerability.

SHAPES AND SIZES

Friendship can take many di erent shapes - it can be found within marriage or romantic relationships, or even amongst coworkers and colleagues. I think it is safe to say that most of us have heard spouses or dating/engaged partners refer to one another as best friends. A study showed that individuals that are married or in romantic relationships appreciate their friendship with one another because they found that it is their friendship with one another that gets them through the di cult seasons together. I had a phone call with my mother, who has been married to my father for more than 17 years, to nd out what her personal opinion on friendship within marriage is and her response was simple, “Friendship should be one of the core foundations of marriage, because the person you are going to spend the rest of your life with should be someone you trust. A partner that you are able to con de in and rely on, and in the same way you need to be all that for your partner as well.

Many things in this world change with time, and so do certain things in marriage, but if your friendship with your spouse is something you always work on your foundation will be stronger”. When life is ever changing one aspect that can be a sweet comfort is the consistency of friendship not just in marriage. All these components are part of marriage but tie into friendship because friendship is where all the formalities of marriage fall away, but enjoying one another’s presence remains.

FRIENDSHIP AT WORK

Friendship is also common between coworkers and colleagues. It is so easy to go to work and feel alone and lost as if you do not belong. But studies show that it is through building friendships at work that people develop a sense of belonging. This ties into what was mentioned previously when I stated that friendship makes me think of community because it develops a support system. Having a support system at work is helpful because the workspace can be di cult at times, but knowing that you’re not alone always provides an unspoken comfort making the di cult times easier to manage, which is apparent in Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NIV) when King Solomon states that “Two are better than one, because they have a return for their labor: if either of them falls down, one can help the other up. All of these might have a direct link to the circumstances of the two years, on top of any other life event that is unrelated to COVID-19. Children often lack the vocabulary to express

their thoughts and concerns, as adults we need to assist them to make sense of what is happening around them or to express what they feel. We gained some insight from Play Therapist, San-Mari McIntyre to assist parents with some tools to be able to better comprehend the emotional and cognitive worlds of their children.

From a psychological, physical, emotional, and spiritual perspective, children and adults are likely to experience trauma in the same way, for example both children and adults can experience feelings of anxiousness or of being scared during or even after a traumatic event. Although children may experience the same e ects of trauma, they are likely to process and understand the traumatic event di erently from the way that adults process and understand the same traumatic event. Children don’t have the life experience to e ectively compare the trauma to anything else in their lives, whereas adults will know that this speci c event is traumatic when compared to their everyday “non-eventful” (nontraumatic) days. Younger children also lack the vocabulary to describe or even understand the traumatic event.

5. It is a natural parental instinct to take full responsibility for all the things that happen to your child. How much responsibility and blame should a parent rightfully take for the traumas their child experiences?

Referring to my answer in the previous question, parents can take precautionary measures to prevent certain traumas from happening to their children. For example, parents can be involved in their children’s choice of computer games and what they watch on television to prevent possible indirect trauma. Parents can screen babysitters and schools to make sure that the responsible adults in their children’s lives have a clean record and to your best knowledge won’t harm your child emotionally, verbally, physically, or sexually. When your spouse or partner (or any person really) abuses your child and you are made aware of the situation, you should take immediate action in protecting your child and removing the child from the situation. If you fail to protect your child from this kind of trauma, you should take responsibility and blame for your child’s traumatic experiences. There are also possible traumatic events that we can’t stop no matter how hard we try. Extremely important to note a parent should not take blame for traumatic events that they as parents don’t have control over.

6. Please provide some suggestions on how adults can create a safe space for children to be open and forthcoming about traumas they encounter outside of the home.

So het ons vriendskap begin tot ons later fotos vir mekaar begin stuur het. Na ‘n paar maande het hy begin bel. So het ons mekaar beter leer ken. Soos die tyd aangaan, het die vriendskap begin ernstig raak. Na 8 maande gaan kuier ons as gesin in die Kaap. Daarna in Jamestown. Waar ek en Je toe mekaar die eerste keer ontmoet.

Met die skryf van die briewe was daar alreeds ‘n vlammetjie, maar na ons mekaar in lewende lywe ontmoet het, was dit liefde met die eerste oog op slag. Daar en dan het hy die vrymoedigheid geneem om my pa te vra of ons kan uitgaan. Met die goeie voet wat hy voorgesit het, kon my pa nie eintlik nee sê nie.

Ons is toe Mosselbaai toe en dit was maar ‘n hartseer saak dat ons nie mekaar gou weer sou sien nie. Aan die begin was dit vir Je ‘n geweldige aanpassing dat ek baie bevoorreg grootgeword het. Terwyl hy die teeoorgestelde ervaring gehad het. Hy het in haglike omstandighede sonder ‘n pa groot geword.

ns gesin was woonagtig in die pragtige kusdorp Mosselbaai. In 1974 gaan kuier my broer Andre Muller in Jamestown, Stellenbosch. Terwyl hy kuier nooi ‘n vriend Victor Christians hom saam werk toe. By die werk ontmoet hy ‘n vriendelike jong man JEFF POOLE.

Na hy voorgestel was en lekker gesels het, vra Je of hy nie dalk susters het nie. My broer Andre noem toe dat hy een suster het. Ek het so bietjie nagedink en sê toe ek sal skryf, maar hy moet eerste skryf. Hy het toe wel opgevolg met my broer en nie lank nie, toe ontvang ek my eerste brief. Met sy eerste brief skryf hy dat hy wel ‘n penmaat vantevore gehad het in die destydse Suidwes-Afrika (Namibië). Maar dit het op ‘n doodloopstraat geëindig. Maar hy hoop dat hierdie vriendskap sal hou – TOT IN LENGTE VAN DAE.

Die twee vertrek woning was onder ‘n boom geleë. Je en sy jonger broer was die twee oudste kinders in

hul gesin. Omdat daar nie genoeg slaap plek was nie, moes Je en Sy broer in die aande by ander mense gaan slaap. Hulle sou dan weer in die oggende terug by hul ma se huis wees.

Een jaar het die wind so erg gewaai, dat die boom waaronder hul huisie gestaan het bo op die huis geval het en dit vernietig het. Je en sy gesin moes toe totaal en al by ander mense herberg vind.

Sy ma het welsyn geld gekry. Je moes vroeg die skool verlaat om werk te kry sodat hy sy ma kon help. Hy was die oudste van vyf kinders op daardie stadium.

Je se ma wou so graag haar eie huis hê. Je kon later vir sy ma ‘n klein ‘prefab’ huisie bou. ‘n Goeie vriend met wie hy gedurende daardie typerk gewerk het, het vir hom ‘n stuk grond gegee om op te woon en te bou. Dit was ‘n drie slaapkamer huis.

Hulle het later nog vertrekke laat aanbou. Sy oorlewende broer woon tot vandag toe nog daar. Sy twee ander broers is oorlede.

Die Here het waarlik ‘n mooi werk in Je se lewe kom doen nadat hy tot bekering gekom het. Soveel so dat sy ma in ‘n oog wink baie verander het na haar kinders tot bekering gekom. So het hulle hele omstandighede ten goede verander.

Ons kyk vandag terug na 42 wonderlike geseënde getroude jare. Die Here het ons geseën met twee wonderlike kinders, Keenan en Nadine. Nadine is getroud met haar man Merlin Christians en het ‘n pragtige kleinseun Nahum, ons dierbare kleinkind.

Ons kan maar net die Here al die lof en eer gee, dat Hy ons tot hier toe gedra en uitgespaar het en ons nog lank vorentoe saam sal uitspaar. Niks kan in die pad staan van twee siele wat die Here lief het en met passie aan hul huwelik werk en bou nie. Dit is vir ons ‘n vooreg om staande te bly en ons storie te kan deel in die volheid van vrede, vreugde en oorwinning.

“Even when I got back from Spain, I still didn’t consider myself being in a relationship with Jessie,” says Lauren. “I hadn’t dated many guys in my lifetime and knew that whoever I would link up with would have to be my husband-to-be. There was no more time to play around, anyway.”

When J&L eventually started dating o cially, they were on the same page in pursuit of marriage. However, when they rst acknowledged their feelings for one another, they felt a bit bothered by the fact that Lauren’s ex-boyfriend (who she broke up with 4 years prior) used to be Jessie’s best friend. Nonetheless, Lauren admits that her ex is part of the story. “If I didn’t date him, I might never have met Jessie, my now husband.”

The video of his senseless murder had gone viral and this provided glaring evidence that the deeply flawed and prejudicial systems still exist. When the verdicts came the world was watching and many people found themselves with mixed feelings; whilst there was a degree of satisfaction regarding the verdicts, it also juxtaposed the reality that the fullness of justice was still lacking.

1. How would you describe yourself individually and as a couple?

JADE: I’m passionate about seeing people live out their God-given purpose, zealous, funny, adventurous, unwavering in beliefs, totally committed to Jesus. I’m a loving and caring father – always looking out for the best of the family. I love being a husband that treats his wife in the little things.

CHANTÉ: Caring, sel ess, hard-working, passionate about the Word of God, forgiving, tolerant, digni ed, teachable, sensitive to the Holy Spirit, unwavering in beliefs, vision orientated, and purpose-driven. Regarding family, I adore my children and absolutely love being an honourable wife to Jade.

AS A COUPLE: We take God at His Word and take the call of God seriously. We share a passion for our generation to encounter the love of the Father. We love each other deeply and ght ercely – for what we believe. We share a disdain for mediocrity – anything contrary to God’s Word is sub-standard. We love having fun together, making jokes, playing the fool, and laughing at one another. Every occasion is an opportunity for great memories. We enjoy one another’s company and love that we get to raise a family together – actively pursuing God’s best regardless of past experiences. 8. When did you come to know Christ and how were you led to becoming part of the ministry you currently serve in?

JADE: Considering myself saved since childhood, I encountered Jesus for myself at a church conference in 2006.

CHANTÉ: In 2008, after knowing about Jesus and serving in church, I experienced God’s radical love drawing me to Himself.

God called us into ministry while serving at this particular ministry’s gap year program. We accepted the call to full-time Bible School as a married couple and enjoyed the most rewarding faith journey. Six years down the line, we now serve as the Youth ministers.

Wealth is not one of those things that you will have by simply waking up in the morning. If you think it works that way, stay in bed and dream on. Being rich or attaining wealth is more about your mindset than it is about having money or generating nances. We can even go as far as to say that Wealthy people are focused on work, whilst Rich people are more focused on a Job. Wealthy people generally want to give, while the rich are generally concerned about receiving.

Unlike being rich, wealth is not measured by things, wealth is measured by time. The essence of Wealth is measured by the length of time you are able to live and uphold your current lifestyle without earning a monthly or regular income. This is the understanding of not having regular income, but having a continual cash ow and/or in ow of nancial resources. The last mentioned is commonly generated through assets, skills, or systems of work.

It certainly is nice to be able to a ord a lot of the things you like and perhaps need. However, by far margins, having Freedom, Liberation and peace of mind outweighs the ‘rich look.’

The wealthy make long-time building their priority, whilst the rich jump at the opportunity for instant grati cation. Inherently, a wealthy person's mindset is directed at building a system to leverage multiple streams of income.

It starts with your passion, and what you like doing – once you have mastered your craft and know your market.

This is followed by the motivation to help and improve the lives of communities and nations, with the goal of making things a bit easier and more e cient for them.

You can measure your capacity to wealth by testing the capacity of your mind. ⁃

16 Days of Activism 2021 25 November 10 December The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign (16 Days Campaign) is a United Nations campaign which takes place annually from 25 November (International Day of No V i o l e n c e a g a i n s t Wo m e n ) t o 1 0 D e c e m b e r (International Human Rights Day). Other key commemorative days during this period include World Aids Day on the 1st December and the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, on 3 December of every year.

Given the scourge of Gender-Based violence in the country, which is declared a national address, government is implementing the Emergency Response Action Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, which was announced by President Cyril in September 2019.

The 16 Days Campaign forms the centre point of government’s comprehensive 365 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

During the 16 Days period, Government together with civil society and the private sector will host a series of community and sector dialogues and activities to foster a collaborative effort in dealing with GBVF.

Be an activist against GBV in your homes, communities, work and positions: Challenge cultures and practices that perpetuate gender inequalities and consequent abuse of women and children at personal and societal level. b. Play your part: Reject and report abusers- Act and don’t look away!

Do not protect abusers, report them!

Sign the Pledge Against GenderBased Violence. Do not engage in abusive activities and become an abuser- Stop abuse.

Challenge and denounce cultural practices that perpetuate gender inequalities. Be sensitive and supportive to GBV victims - share helpful information and support causes near you.

Seek personal help to change harmful behaviours such as alcohol and substance abuse.

Teach children values of gender equality. Protect children from exposure to violence and harmful content on internet and social media, including pornography and sexual solicitation.

Develop policies that prevent and deal with gender based violence in your sector, workplace and communities.

Organise targeted community outreach and dialogues on solutions towards a gender equal society.

Together, let us take action to support the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.
