READERS

When I 'irst read KrĂŠhon Magazine, I was amazed at the talent, honesty and excellence it wants to portray. Everyone and everything must "start" somewhere, somehow... Most of us tend to forget our "starting points". So, when I was approached to proofread, I felt an excitement; like I'm part of something really "great". I am really honoured to be involved. On a higher note. We always wish for a better Way of life, to be our better selves. May this year be the culmination of everything we wished for and dreamed of. May we live in our "third day, in His Presence" as per Hosea 6. God bless everyone. Enjoy this issue!

Self-love, health and repositioning. The words I live by these days. Hours after I’d drafted them on my radar, one of my dearest and most brilliant brothers in Christ encouraged me with these very words. They are vital for my growth in this season. And my ‘sanity’. By grace. Enough about me, though. Let’s talk about You, the reader. The wanderer, (explorer perhaps)? The romantic. The expert. The serious. The humorous and the purpose-driven. We are all so wonderfully wired and woven together with our Creator’s intentional blueprint in mind. Yet so many of us are constantly

@t h e ma r ko nz io n

rushing to jump on the train of impatience all the way to “Crazyville”. Why is that? Sound advice or motivation cannot really persuade you on how to manage your life and thoughts better, if your mind never stops at “Renewal Station” to take a breather on “Platform R” - for Responsibility. Yes, you and I are responsible in choosing patience, joy, and wisdom which leads to wholesome thinking, healthy relationships and spiritual prosperity, to name but a few of the generous bene'its. At a random occasion I once heard a young guy casually stating; “I’m not so clued up on the Bible.” At that very

moment I couldn’t help but think of how unaware he must be of the sweetness, blessing and relief that is chested in the Word. Hence, this magazine aims at giving readers ample clues i.e clear guidelines and pure truth - centred in Christ and in His everlasting word. I know I would be lost without it. Life without it equals death. So I encourage us all to choose life. It’s so worth it. In the words of another awesome friend of mine, always be lekker! :)

The current South African national cricket team, The Proteas, is one of the most successful national teams in the country and the world. Their record in test cricket is quite outstanding for such a young team. They are currently ranked number one in the world in both ODI and Test cricket. In 2009 they made history when they became the 'irst ever South African team to win an away test cricket series in Australia. The year proved to be a successful one for the Proteas, being undefeated in 10 Test matches. sahistory.org.za

Cartoon Eyed Fish Florida researchers uncovered this dogfish shark last year. Named after "the Shark Lady" Eugenie Clark, a famous shark researcher, Genie's dogfish features cartoonishly large, bright blue eyes. Huge peepers aside, the shark is only about 20 to 28 inches long.

Known as Squalus clarkae, it lives in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean. Like others of its kind, it's threatened by commercial fisheries — which often accidentally catch sharks.

Where did you grow up and how did that in9luence your character today? I grew up in the Northern Cape, in a small town called Strydenburg (50 km before Hopetown). The Northern Cape context of the here-and-now has helped me to gain a better understanding of life as we know it, between its simplicities and complexities.

require lengthy answers for lots of marks. I also enjoyed Maths and Geography. When did you decide to study Theology and why? Initially, I never intended on studying Theology. Education was my 'irst choice. However, at school I often spoke passionately about the word of God. Knowing this, my teacher suggested I choose Theology. Her recommendation lead her to apply on behalf of me.

Tell us about the people in your life. What do they mean to you and what do you value most about them and their part in your life? My family plays a huge role in my achievement at the University of Stellenbosch. Our church Roepersfontein Pentecostal Ministry has also played a signi'icant role in my life. It has been my spiritual backbone, helping me to really stay focused on God. My girlfriend Vernique played a major part during the preparation for my 'inal exams. She constantly motivated me and we also helped one another with our academic work. God has been and remains the centre of it all.

What has been the highlights of your studies? A great highlight was receiving an invitation from Golden Key International, which is an achievement for excellence in academics and by receiving it every year. What has been the most challenging part of your studies? Learning to understand the Bible in the various contexts and to interpret it in a hermeneutic approach which consists of the word in the text (before and after). Being a Pentecostal congregant made it dif'icult for me to interpret it in that way.

What were some of your favourite moments in high school and what were your favourite subjects? My favourite moments in High School includes winning the 5000m and 1500m long distance, and receiving a special award in grade 11 by Miss September. History will always be one of my favourite subjects, especially because I love the questions that

This is one of Dawood’s recent testimonies: I was on the verge of giving up. I wanted to quit my studies. I completed and submitted the cancelation form. About 3 to 4 days later I returned to the Admin building after realising that I didn’t want to follow through with the request. When I entered the of'ice, the lady behind the desk was still speaking on the phone, about to upload my cancellation. It was only by grace that the Lord lead me back to the of'ice just in time for me to cancel the cancellation. Today I have no regrets. Tell us about your Athlete days at school and how important Fitness is to you? My days at school as an athlete was awesome and brilliant. Some of the kids called me Vinnige Fanie. It was always exciting to compete with other brilliant athletes. I remember at the age of 17 I competed with the under-19 boys and defeated them. It was a sweet victory. Fitness for me is the key to life. I breathe 'itness, I sleep 'itness. Fitness is a natural part of who I am and will always be for the rest of my life. Being active unlocks new doors.

Fast Facts: • If not Theology, I would’ve studied Civil Engineering or a Business Degree. • My greatest fear is losing my mom and myself as person. • I would like to see more sport programs being created which would provide sportsmen and women a solid platform to reach their goals. As well as growth in the field of sport that enables players to make a better living for themselves. • My hidden talent is playing a bit of piano now and then.

MEDITATION Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” HEBREWS 13:5 (NKJV) kréhon

At some stage you had to endure two medical operations and was out of the game for two years. Please share more about that and how it strengthened you? In the beginning of my 'irst year at the university, I went to the bathroom after a training session one day and whilst sitting down I just saw a lot of blood starting to 'low. During a counselling session, I learned that I was unable to compete during that time. One of my Professors, Prof Thesnaar, whom I adore, guided me throughout this process. On the 4th of November 2016, it was time for me to undergo my 'irst haemorrhoid operation which was tough, because the operation was big and I had to return to the hospital in October 2017 to undergo the second operation due to it being a massive operation. As you can see, this was during my exam times, so I

had to endure and keep the faith. I remember at the 'irst operation I opened the Bible with the scripture which says “I am with you” and I know at that moment God was speaking to me. How long have you been training for the Comrades Marathon and what does your training consist of? I have been running since 2012 upon receiving my Western Province colours and going on to compete with the best. I have been training for the Comrades for 3 years (which excludes my post-op recovery phase). My training schedule consists out of 45minute long runs in the morning and sometimes doing fartlek to keep the endurance in shape. I do speed two times a week to balance between endurance and speed.

Who has been your greatest role model or inspiration? John Cena has been my greatest role model. Typically, my room walls on campus featured many of his pictures. I know some may say that he is not an athlete originating from athletics, but I like his work ethic which hosts a never-die attitude. His slogan Never Give Up continues to inspire me.

also go hand-in-hand quite brilliantly. It is also best to remain the same person by not changing into a falsi'ied version of oneself. Which Bible verse/scripture are you currently meditating on and what are you drawing from it at the moment? I’ve been meditating on Hebrews 13:5, where the Lord says that “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.” The ‘never’ and ‘never forsake’ held and kept me during my years at university. It inspired me and propelled me forward.

What are your aspirations for the 5 years of your life? I see myself living a life I have dreamed of as described in my article in Die Burger (2015). To provide for my mother and have a joy'illed life. Giving back to the community would make me very happy. I believe and declare that the next 5 years will be years of great abundance and prosperity for me.

Below: Dawood and his girlfriend Vernique Levendal on the day of his graduation.

What does ‘trusting God’ mean to you? For me, trusting God gives me courage during times of suffering and pain. Trusting God means to be thankful for everything, even though things may not go my way. Trusting God means trusting the process I go through. What is your message to aspiring Theology students and upcoming Sport personalities? I would like to encourage upcoming theologians and sport stars to maintain their endurance and to never lose the faith. Being active in sport and/or being a theologian is one of the character building careers. They

VASHTI PRINS hails from the town of Kuilsriver (in the Northern Suburbs), better known as ‘Kuila’ amongst the young folk. Having had the privilege to experience her formative and current years in quiet, safe and secure areas has had a good influence on her development as a young woman. She realises that there are many who cannot say the same, thus she really is grateful to have grown up in a more balanced environment. Admittedly, Vashti deems herself as not very street smart, which stirs within her a curious bug, wanting to explore other locations regardless of the area or circumstance. A beautiful woman with a beautiful name which carries a beautiful meaning. It literally means Beautiful and Best/Excellent woman. “It stems from the Bible, Queen Vashti in the book of Esther. My mom says she decided on this name for me because the meaning thereof is precisely what she envisioned for me; a beautiful woman of excellence, a queen, a conqueror,” she says. Her second name, Aleyna is also very beautiful and means Precious or Awakening.

Tell us about your life as a teenager, student life and your journey to becoming a young adult? Goodness! Life as a teenager was all about hustling at school like I was hustling for the real world. At the time school work was like the most serious thing in the world to me. So my teenage years over'lowed with Eisteddfods for piano, poetry, public speaking, debate, reading, prose, monologues and then student council and choirs. I was that girl who took on everything. A downright nerd. Varsity was more or less the same because I realised these were important institutions to get through and failing was not an option - in fact failing is one of my most debilitating fears. However, while being very dif'icult, varsity was a lot more fun. I had more friends, exposure to different cultural backgrounds and social experiences and a little more freedom. For the 'irst time in my life I didn’t live at home and this was an adjustment in itself. This is where the 'irst seeds of independence started taking root and where ultimately the desire for full independence started growing. I’m glad it’s over though. I have never been more sleep deprived in my whole life than when I was a student, lol! Varsity became so stressful that I got the hang of the ‘just wing it’ bug. I think it taught me that sometimes you just have to wing it and brace yourself for what comes next - it could be pleasantly good or really bad but even that, if

them. I am learning that mental, emotional and spiritual health is the most important thing you can cultivate for yourself 'irst and then for the people you have any relations with. I have learnt that you literally need to listen attentively to your body and the male or female inside of it because sometimes its requests are so soft you can barely hear it and then you wind up in a world where you are feeling disrespected or overstimulated because you took yourself to places you actually didn’t want to be or you allowed things that actually hurt or damaged you.

Right now, my journey to becoming a young adult must have been the most dif'icult and complex personal journey. This is the time where it stopped being about the institutions, the work and everything around me. This is where I became more focused on the person I wake up with every morning - Me. I won’t lie, right now is the most rough, brutal and emotional journey of my whole life, but it is rewarding. It is simultaneously scary and exciting. It reveals your depths and what you’re capable of in the most agonising ways sometimes. Through it all though, I sure hope I can laugh about and appreciative it all later in my life.

I am learning that mental, emotional and spiritual health is the most important thing you can cultivate for yourself first and then for the people you have any relations with.

I am currently learning profound lessons. I 'inally realise that some Tumblr sayings aren’t simply cliché, they were just things people said that I hadn’t internalised yet because I hadn’t learnt the lesson or had the experience yet. I am learning the importance of boundaries and that it’s important to have them even though people will be more than often offended by them, label you or misunderstand you because of

How did you discover your niche for acting? When did you decide to pursue Drama in pursuit of becoming an actress? You know, people always think it was this ‘come to the light’ moment or great revelation. I had just always been my best, most happy self within the artistic space. I 'ind that it’s a space that scares me the most and gives me the most anxiety ever but makes me feel the most alive, expressive and communicative. In terms of acting - I love all the 'ine work that goes into creating my character and my character’s work. It is emotionally daunting but fun and very exciting nonetheless. There wasn’t a moment I decided to de'initely pursue this, it was just the natural next step for me. Do you prefer being called an Actor or Actress? Call me an Actress. I know, an actor is an actor and previously in my mind it has also always been a unisex term even though there was a female version of it. But now with everything that has been happening pertaining to male and female power struggles and recognition especially in the work place, I need the two versions of the word to be used separately. It matters now yes, because now, especially, I just want males and females to be recognised as two different entities that have different abilities so that in doing so, us females can be recognised fully, speci'ically and specially apart for what we are, what we have to offer and what we are capable of that is solely ours and our magic alone - if that makes sense? We do such ground-breaking, strong and impacting work that needs to be recognised as solely a female’s in'luential work and an Actress’ in'luential work. I cannot stand to succumb to yet another term that gets a male title takeover as soon as it represents strength, in'luence or success. I need us to not be lazy and refer to actresses as actresses out of pure respect. !4 2

What has been some of the greatest challenges playing Danielle Hendricks aka Danni on Suidooster? And what are some of the most rewarding aspects of playing this character? A soapie character is never really too dif'icult to play because there isn’t exactly enough time within the actual production of a scene to submerge yourself dramatically into the character like you would in a theatre production or a movie. Its two/three takes and onto the next scene and then your character’s emotional journey shifts or changes route completely. I think the dif'icult part in general is having to generate different emotions at such a fast rate while maintaining focus at the same time. Another thing I 'ind can become dif'icult is exercising the consistent discipline to take note of your character’s emotional timeline and journey. Take note when those things are in'luenced by direct or indirect events and how that shift and changes your character’s state of being and to what extent and how that will affect your relationships. I think it’s very easy to become lazy playing a character in a soapie. Playing Danni becomes rewarding when I look back to the

audience and my character has been a point of relation or comfort for them. It is rewarding when my audience can recognise themselves within in my character and learn or grow from it or even recognise themselves within a situation my character experienced and then learn or grow from it. I have also had moments of personal revelation following certain things my character has said or done. I learn from her sometimes. She also allows me the channel through which to address very serious issues such as sexual harassment, or dealing with past demons and traumas, and in being a part of other people’s storylines I get to be a side line voice for such things as opinions on abortion or cults or mental illness. How do you maintain your con9idence and what drives you to improve yourself every day?

Facebook: @Suidooster

That’s actually one I struggle with; con'idence isn’t my best quality (ironically so). I refrain from reading the comments on our Suidooster fan-page because people indirectly and without realising it sometimes attack the person behind the character and not the character itself.

⟶ I maintain my con'idence by trying, in small amounts, to practise honouring myself, good mental health, choosing what I allow into my intimate space and knowing myself because if I have that, I think nothing outside of me or that doesn’t belong to me can really shake me into becoming insecure and not con'ident. But even in this, I am baby-stepping the hell out of it, I really do fail dismally most days. Because I won’t lie though, this is a very small and critical industry – everyone talks and has an opinion whether it be about your personal life or work life and maintaining con'idence in such a brutal, unsafe space is extremely very hard.

What is your de9inition of Faith, Hope and Love? My de'inition of Faith, Hope and Love is as the ultimate teacher states it in the Bible, so we might as well go verbatim on that - nothing more and nothing less. I think every other add on to those de'initions is to make us humans comfortable and at peace with our own shortcomings and imperfections in these practises/beliefs.

“I think one is capable of inspiring people no matter where you are or who you are.”

Who are some of your greatest musical and acting inspirations? How did they shape the overall product you display?

If you had to name your hair, what would you call it? Have you ever cut your hair super short? Would you ever consider doing that?

Man, I don’t have a speci'ic person I look up to. When I see someone performing and it moves or shifts me and inspires me toward wanting to reach a similar outcomes, I just like it, doesn’t really matter who you are. I think one is capable of inspiring people no matter where you are or who you are. I 'ind that when things shift or inspire me, it’s mainly because it’s really honest and effortless and I guess that’s what I strive toward achieving in my own work. I hope that’s what re'lects in my work.

kréhon

Oh my word I can’t think of a name! But I do think my hair would be the love child of Pocahontas and Tina Turner because it can be very curly or very straight, it can be controlled or unpredictable, and it can be super low key or just plain wild. I have never cut my hair very short no, and I think sometime in the far future I might but it’s going to take some real letting go, courage and peace about it! Lol I don’t want to cry about it or regret it.

How would you encourage aspiring actors and performers in honing their craft and becoming the best in who they are and can be? WOW. I’d start with telling them something completely off topic like stay true to yourself, KNOW who you are, practise who you are and honour your truth because this industry takes from you as the person, before it deals with the character you’re playing. Actually THIS I guess I’d tell anyone going into the working world. I’d say enter this industry if you are 100% certain you want it because it’s the ambition and great passion that drives you to show up every morning for your craft even when there isn’t work. Put in the simple, sometimes tedious work like do your vocal warm ups and exercises, do your articulation exercises, broaden your vocal range, strengthen your diaphragm. Try to get involved in as many workshops as possible so that you can broaden your skill set because the more 'lexible you are, the better your chances are. Mostly, take care of yourself because you can’t give from an unkempt, fragile or empty vessel in an industry that demands a lot.

My work aspirations for 2019 is to have the courage to involve myself in other productions; do a foreign commercial, hopefully a movie, do vocal work and be an ambassador or promoter of one or many brands. My personal aspirations include continuous progress in mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health. I believe it’s more important than anything else. I want to cultivate and grow safe spaces wherever I go and in whoever I let into my space and then fearlessly live in those safe spaces. I want to have the guts to let go of what must be let go, let live what must live, forgive all that must be forgiven and set boundaries where they need to be set. I want to surround myself with God-kind people who know more and different things than me so that my mind and perspectives can evolve and expanded. I want to read more. I hope others will discover safe spaces this year. I hope they will come across people who have genuine good and honest intentions for them. I hope people will discover the weight and importance of self-care and I honestly hope people will really feel deep running joy and engage in a relationship with something larger and more positively powerful than themselves. ⓚ

What are your aspirations for 2019 and what do you hope others will discover in the new year?

Stay winning, Queen Vashti. We love you and certainly pray that God would give you the desires of your heart. You are blessed!

We can also be part of the crowd that dare try with their own strength and by common grace achieve what they call success but left wanting more - feeling inadequate despite the success. We can get caught up in this relegated state of purgatory in-completion and joyless instant grati'ication or we can believe and have full con'idence in a God that is self-suf'icient. A God who can inform our minds with good things and free us from the chaos of going clockwise and 'iguring it all out on our own. After all, He is the hand that moulded us in the womb. Imagine trying to drive a nice, beautiful car on an empty tank without the necessary thing it requires in order to function; it's madness. It remains nothing but beautiful, good to look at, but ultimately useless and 'going nowhere slowly'. Soon its beauty will fade away and it will be forgotten. That is what happens to us when we pull the 'Adam and Eve' stunt and choose to entertain the false evil whispers from the enemy. We can lock ourselves up into a state of inaction for decades. We can sit idle or lost in a maze of life, fearful, 'illed with ingratitude and inadequacy, distracted with just the potential to do extraordinary things. But His presence will give us the courage we need to come face to face with those dif'icult hindrances and come out on the other side victorious. We will not grind to a halt but will 'inish well. He will harness our energy with a lot of grace to prepare us for good works. He gives us the faith to start and continue working even when our abilities are challenged or judged. that God, out of the abundance of His mercy, may deal with you kindly and transform your heart. That He may use your abilities and gifts for the advancement of His Kingdom and to enrich and inspire the lives of others in extraordinary ways. He is that solid foundation who grounds and propels us to do amazing things. Friend, are you willing? Are you ready? Let’s go! ⓚ

He has set laws and standards not for restriction, but to protect our minds and to secure our souls so we can remain free from bondage. So how do we discover potential? We can start by acknowledging that God did not create any useless beings. Sin’s mission is to make us useless, so we need our Creator, not only to renew us but to give us the courage and wisdom to use our lives as He has intended when he knitted us to life. We pray and have sincere surrender of our self-will and submit ourselves under His care. DISCOVER ME, IN THE LIGHT THAT I TRULY AM poem by MACAILYNN BENN

This piece is written from the perspective of the substance itself. It’s as though the drug craves to be discovered like this. In this critical twist, the substance hopes that its abuser would run from it and stay away. Forever. Free. Forever. Witnesses are known to cry out on behalf of substance abusers, yet in this poem the substance alarmingly acknowledges how it never chooses its user and cries out to be rescued from this handicapped reality. But the cry is still a helpless echo…

 Just there
 Without sound
 Without anguish
Just there in the midst of it all
To Kill And when the 'ire turned to dust
I knew that it was over
I knew that I was too powerful, once again
 Too boundless
 And they were too late
I regret it over and over and over again It's their end before they even start
Before they can learn to love and be loved
Before they can learn to 'ly
 Before they can be.
It's their end How I long for them to run away
How I long for them to 'lee from me

From this tedious position
How I long for them to do so many things
How I long for them to see, for them to adjust their gaze
For them to not slumber, to not cripple, to not fall
But the shackles con'ine them. They're being bind to a life that they never asked for
A life that knows no name, sees no face
How they're being formed into something they're not
How their perception is being modi'ied. I cause terror and anxiety
I am the one that torments and engraves
 I root disbelief
 The dark one that imprints

In Him I Move I started dancing from the tender age of 4. At the time, it was my Grandmother's 70th birthday and all the grandchildren did a little dance to escort her as well as an item in dance. That was certainly a small beginning for me that became wondrously clear to this present day as a 19 year old. As the years progressed I have come to know and understand the signiRicance behind dance. The "why you do what you do" sort of thing.

A Heartfelt Experience After a month of doing a short item in dance with my cousin at a Women's conference at Orion church in Mitchell's Plain, I watched the video for the 'irst time. I cannot quite describe or even begin to explain what I was feeling inside or what was happening to me while watching the footage. I can only try. My heart suddenly raced and I was shaking non-stop, causing me to sweat.

On the real, I have never been a person who sought all the attention. I have always believed (and still do) that there is a higher power and that all the attention belonged to the Father above. This immediately reminds me of the scripture found in John 12:32 that says, "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me." Thinking back on that amazing experience 'ills my heart with so much gratitude and joy.

This was probably the most odd experience. However, after watching it countless times trying to actually understand what my body was going through, I just asked the Lord to kindly reveal to me this sudden reaction. And in almost no time, I had a sudden unction to cover myself under the blood of Jesus. It was de'initely the Lord.

The moral of the story is simply that we should never ever forget to pray earnestly and diligently to the Lord and cover ourselves with His blood. Our gifts should never become too big that we forget to Pray to the Almighty. Also, we should not take our talents/gifts lightly. I mean, you can also bless your heart and minister to yourself through your own gift. That's incredible and touching. It was not only birthed to you in order to minister to others, but yourself too. ⓚ

It was somewhat overwhelming as many thoughts went through my mind. I was just reminded as to how blessed I really am. I have so many things to be grateful for. I say this with a humble spirit. It is so overwhelming. To experience the Holy Spirit is to experience God's thoughts and wisdom. I feel that the enemy is always trying to rob us and 'ill our minds with so much insecurities, causing one to miss the mark.

hile scrolling through Facebook one day, I read the following on a friend’s feed; “The problem is that we start our days on our phones not on our knees.” Those words set off a train of thought as I realised that most people reach for their phones 'irst thing in the morning after waking up. I imagined the surge of panic that goes through a person’s inside when they have no data and gets cut off from the outside world or should I say, cyber-world? The connections to technological devices like your smart phone, video games, computers, etc. seems to be much deeper than we believe it is. Neuroscientist, Doctor Carolyn Leaf proposes the question, “is technology making us depressed?” Her research on this topic brings her to this simple answer - Technology can become bad for you

if it is not managed well. Computer Scientist, Brad Huddleston wrote a book called ‘Digital Cocaine’ - the title refers to digital addiction and is in comparison to cocaine addiction. Huddleston embarked on a research journey which resulted in him traveling around the world sharing his research with people. A few months ago, I had the great privilege to attend one of his sessions. It really opened my eyes to the effects of technology and how it in'luences various parts of our lives. Doctor Leaf de'ines addiction as something a person is consumed by, she believes that there is something like positive addiction and that the human race is created to be consumed by positive ‘feel good’ things. Many people refuse to believe that technology can be harmful at all. However, it really doesn’t take two experts to express the dangers of technology - we see the effects around us daily.

There is this constant competition going on, driven by social media to copy the behaviours and lifestyles seen on Instagram, Facebook, etc. The problem with that is what we see online is almost always a 'iltered, enhanced/perfected image, but the reality often is totally different. It’s so easy to fall prey to a fake perfection and falling short of deeper meaningful encounters in reality. Both Dr. Leaf and Brad Huddleston speak of the effects that technology has on human beings emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Spending excessive amount of time on your phone can result in fatigue, irritable emotions; insomnia, depression and anxiety - to name a few. In a fast developing tech-savvy world, it is dif'icult to maintain a healthy approach to technology, since we are reliant on it, to a great degree. Both Dr. Leaf and Huddleston gives great advice on maintaining a healthy relationship with technology, like going old school, for instance, by having a bedside alarm instead of your phone waking you up in the morning. uring a youth service, a preacher once said; “singleness should never be confused with loneliness.” Beyoncé also famously stated that one should “'irst live your own life before you become someone else’s…” I’ll leave it to you to 'ill in the blank. These are strong statements that ring so true in this day and age. Why are so many of us in such a hurry to engage ourselves to another person? Are you in a position to present your own identity and/or bring along wisdom gained through life experiences? Would you really consider bringing nothing to the table and call the next person your life partner, your everything?

kréhon

There is a joyous feeling in knowing that we’ve been created as glorious creative creatures, who have the ability to create our own story and unsel'ishly share it at an appointed time with a signi'icant other. At every stage in the development of our life (spirit, soul, body) there are certain levels to be reached before certain engagements may take place. As you grow older, certain responsibilities as an adult start to have more signi'icance. These responsibilities are assigned to you, if and when you can handle them. Furthermore the company you keep can change based on whether you share common interests.

[RE] Process Therefore you need to consider that during your growth as a single person, it is necessary for you to prepare yourself to become a suitable and mature partner for that signi'icant someone in the future. Anything premature would be distasteful and you would not be ready to serve your purpose and/or trustworthy to take your rightful place. The question remains, why are we so eager to meet the signi'icant other (prematurely), if you have not yet ensured that you are ready to move onto the next level of life? It should not only be the next person’s responsibility to provide ful'ilment in your life but also a sign of the responsibility you are ready to carry. Think about it - if you’re looking to enter into a relationship, it should not only be for the romance but to build towards purpose and a destiny. When you enter into a relationship, you have another person’s life/future in your hands. Therefore, the question remains... Are you ready? Cultivate patience, so that you don’t rush the process, knowing that life (success) or death (failure) is knocking at your door. Remember also, that singularly you are a powerhouse but plurally (together) you are a force to be reckoned with.

THE ART OF FIGHTING

I

am a list maker. A to-do list, a donot-forget this list, grocery list, list of scripture to remember to read at some point, important dates, short term lists, long term lists, a list for every occasion under the sun. My husband and I recently had a 'ight, an ugly one. After we got through it, it occurred to me. We should be taught how to 'ight. No one tells you how to. Let's face it, relationships are complicated. Disagreements are par for the course when dealing with other humans. A wise man once said that the argument should never become more important than the person. In keeping with the list theme, I have jotted down 'ive do's and don’ts in order to help us navigate.

1. Do remember that you love this person: Unless you are breaking up and you never want to see one another again. Even then though, burning your bridges is a big no-no. You must keep in mind that you care for the person in the midst of an argument, you are a lot less likely to "hit below the belt" if you do.

2. Do not hit below the belt: The person you know well is usually the one on which you have the dirt. During an argument, it is easy to be tempted to use this ammunition. Let's opt not to. Repairing damaged feelings is a lot harder than 'iguring out who is right or wrong. It's better to not hurt people who are a part of your world. Be it a friend, colleague or family member, keep it clean.

A wise man once said that the argument should never become more important than the person 3. Do not bring up old grievances: Resorting to bringing up old issues to prove a point is never a good idea. Stick to the question at hand. We usually have disagreements because we differ. Finding common ground in the midst of a 'ight helps to move toward reaching a resolution. Bringing up old trespasses simply prolongs the 'ight.

4. Do pause the 9ight: If things become too heated or like me, you feel your inner monster popping up, press pause. Take a step back. Take a few deep breaths or even go for a walk. Often taking a step back gives you new perspective. Return to the argument when you are rational enough to be heard without raising your voice or your eyebrows. Calm heads make for sweet relationships.

5. Avoid the words "never" and "always": I know it's hard not to exaggerate when you are feeling hot under the collar. A word to the wise... do not say "you always do that". Also, avoid saying "you never do this." It sounds simple, but it is exaggerations and generalisations that get us into a whirlpool of trouble. I hope this gives you hope to cope with people who rub you the wrong way. On several occasions, having a list has saved my life. ⓚ

iSolation the enemy of growth

I read a quote recently which says, "Be alone. Get inside your mind. Figure things out. GROW". On the outset it captured me as thought provoking and profound but when I really thought about it I realised that being alone trying to 'igure things out our way is not always the way it ought to be, such can lead to a position of individualism, where you 'ind yourself in a state of belief that you are navigator of your own destiny, becoming your own standard of measure.

Isolation traps us into a world where we constantly have to wear a mask and pretend that this life we live, we can do it on your own. THE ‘F’ WORD I AM ON A QUEST. Like a knight or Christopher Columbus. I am an adventurer. Taking the path less travelled. I am chasing a dream, and let me tell you, some days are downright scary.

So, on my quest there are certain clues, cues and milestones. There are certain do’s and don’ts. There are if’s and but’s, what if’s and maybe’s. There is a rule book, don’t get me wrong. God has left us the road map, the Bible and a GPS, the Holy Spirit. But do we open the pages and seek to 'ind Him with everything we’ve got? To 'ind the path of life. Or do we become bogged down by work, family, 'inances and even church, and miss the plot completely? Do you say, “I will give my life to God someday,” or “God understands me”?. “He knows I’m not ready.” Do you cop out?

As daunting as the unknown is, the vision is real. It exists, albeit only in my mind’s eye. It’s as real as the pages of a book or my kids’ faces. So what do I do? Do I stuff it down and try to swallow it with a big gulp and get back to reality? A reality which dictates that A and B is followed by C. That 1 + 1 = 2. What if after B comes F? What if I simply cannot accept that this is it. There has to be more.

See, in order to begin a journey, you start at the beginning, right? Now, in the beginning was the word and the word was God and God became 'lesh and dwelt amongst us. Wowzer! Born of a virgin, walked on water, died and came back to life. All the makings of an incredible fairy tale. When the fairy tale becomes your reality, when you believe every word and when you get a taste of the joy, peace, love, hope, restoration, healing, how do you walk away? How do you return to the grind and revert to the rat race? I am afraid to report that I cannot. Hence, I am on this quest. I have decided to follow Jesus and

The bible says that “Faith is the substance of things hoped for. The evidence of things not seen.” What do you do when this “F” word keeps messing with your current reality? If this faith is eating you whole and swallowing you alive, like Jonah in the belly of the whale. It will not be denied. You cannot escape. You face it, right? Head on. You say; “okay faith, I have my big girl boots on. What is up with you? I am going at it. I am going all the way. I am determined to know the mind of my Maker. I am desperate to know the heart of my Father.” No wonder they call it “the good 'ight of faith”. The hustle is real. Between who I was and who I am. Between what I do and what I want to do. 1) You cannot be at peace with God, if you’re not at peace with your brother.

Ephesians 2:5-6 “Even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus”

This was a strong word that came forth to everyone and reminded me to analyse my own life and make sure that I am at peace in all my relationships.

3) Treat the least amongst you the same way that you would treat Jesus.

Your heart may be absolutely sincere toward God the Father, but He is more concerned about reconciliation between our brothers. Only then will God fully accept what we have to offer Him.

This is a principle by which we will all be judged one day. View people not by their immediate appearances or their faults, but view them the same way God views them.

Matthew 5:23-24 “Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”

Matthew 25:40 “ And the King will answer and say to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” 4) If you don’t love others, you don’t know God.

2) We have all been 'raised together with Christ'; therefore we have all been brought onto the same level.

The Bible has much to say about isolation, and this verse makes it clear that you cannot fully know God without loving your brothers.

This made me realise that we cannot treat our brothers differently. We should all treat each other the same no matter what our status is on any level, since we have all been 'raised TOGETHER with Christ’.

5) The strength to overcome your weakness is found in your brother.

Philippians 2:3 “Let nothing be done through sel'ish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself”

I’ve come to the realisation that we cannot accomplish our personal destinies on our own; we literally need one another in order to ful'il the plan that God has preordained for us.

7) Submit to those over you, but also submit to your brothers. This is the type of submission that God desires us to have. We may 'ind it really easy to submit to our leaders, but how easy is it for us to submit to one another? This creates within us a serving heart and ensures an atmosphere of humility.

Alone we may have weaknesses, but together our weaknesses are covered by our brothers’ strength, like the gap of a puzzle piece being 'illed by another piece. 6) My brother is better than myself.

1 Peter 5:5 “ Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.” ⓚ

This ensures a constant state of humility amongst us whenever we come together. It also creates a rich environment for grace to be imparted, as grace is only given to the humble.

Ephesians 5: 19-20 MSG up says "sing hymns instead of drinking songs. Sing songs from your heart to Christ. Sing praises over everything ( paraphrased). This scripture clearly reveals that whatever is in your heart is what you'll sing. One might start thinking that 'hymns' are religious because traditional churches sing hymns. The Greek meaning of hymn is 'a song of praise' and hymns are the types of songs speci'ically written for the purpose of adoration or prayer and addressed to a deity (supernatural human). Why are they addressed to a supernatural human? Because they are songs that can be clearly understood by those who understand the 'inished work of the Cross and have believed in it with their whole hearts. Another part of this scripture explains how drinking songs bring death and this is because we are created to be deities who fully drink on the Spirit and not drinking songs because they don't glorify God.

Proverbs 25:20 (MSG) says "Singing light songs to the brokenhearted is like pouring salt in their wounds." This is one of the in'luences hymns have in our bodies, it heals us inside out and if lyrics fail to prove this scripture right then they have denied the 'inished work of the cross. Bear in mind it says 'light songs' which means anything that brings condemnation, shame and guilt is a song of the dark. You can never expect someone to be healed whilst listening to a hymn that judges them. Christ came to save not to judge anyone. Psalms 105:2 supports this by saying “translate His WONDERS into music.” Are your hymns a translation of what Christ has done for human kind ? That's the biggest wonder that any god of any religion has failed to do and that is what separates us from them.

Have you made a resolution to start your days with prayer and God’s Word this year? Have purposed to become more humble and loving this year? Business sense dictates some degree of order and control in how things are done, which means that certain jobs may not allow for everyone to have creative freedom. Secondly – the realities of our current economic state and other in'luencing factors mean that millions of people 'ind themselves in jobs that they don’t enjoy. A sad, but true reality. Not everyone is privileged to have their passions and talents translate into their jobs. I echo Oprah Winfrey – sometimes you need to do what you need to do, until you can do what you want to do. Some choose to use their talents outside of work as a creative outlet. Some cannot afford to do that. Whatever the situation may be, we’re still spending most of our time at work. So if we 'ind ourselves in a place where our passion has faded and struggling to contribute creatively, what do we do? How do we do great work, without quitting our jobs in pursuit of what we love to do?

Things like organisational politics, culture dynamics, pressure to perform, lack of lifebalance and so on. I also believe that there’s an aspect of being “boxed in”; limited in the way we do things that drains life and creativity from us. Doing the same things the same way every day without the freedom to truly apply our minds to its full potential; much like an axe becomes blunt if not regularly sharpened, so we too may become “blunt”. How so? God created us in His image and likeness. He placed His creativity within us. Therefore, if we have all this creative capacity and we’re not using it, it can drain life from us.

…IF WE REMAIN FOCUSSED ON WHO WE LOVE…, OUR LOVE FOR HIM WILL GUIDE US TO LOVING WHAT WE DO.

Here’s a truth that helps me along my journey… it’s not always about loving what you do. It’s about who you love. Let me explain.

that say we need to do what we love, I put it you, that if we remain focussed on who we love and pleasing Him in the work we do, our love for Him will guide us to loving what we do.

Colossians 3:23 (AMP) says: “Whatever you do [whatever your task may be], work from the soul [that is, put in your very best effort], as [something done] for the Lord and not for men.” This verse makes it very clear that in everything we do, we should be giving it our best. It doesn’t say that when circumstances are great or if we work for an awesome boss or when we earn a huge pay check. It says “whatever you do” and I’m pretty sure work is included in whatever. It also continues to say that we need to remember that we’re ultimately serving God and He is the one that will reward us. So unlike many quotes

JAN-FEB 2019

So where does one start? I’d like to think it starts with changing your mind. Reframe your thinking and prayers about your work. When we’re stuck on how little enjoyment we get from what we’re doing, we miss so many opportunities to be creative and add value in different ways. Does this mean that if you’re unhappy in your job, you should just stay? But of course not! It’s all about choice. If I’m unhappy, I need to make a choice. Stay, change my perspective and seek opportunities to let that creativity manifest.

hearts and show us new things, new opportunities or even just give us new eyes to see old situations differently. This will enable us to embrace the work we do on a daily basis with passion, energy and curiosity, always challenging our thinking and resting in the grace that His creative power within us manifests through us.

I often found myself in that place where I feel trapped by the limitations of red tape and old ways of doing things, which eventually starts affecting the quality of my work.

It seems so complex yet grace simpli'ies it so beautifully. Focus on the “Who”, then the “what” will follow. Remember, we are already fully equipped to do great work, as long as it's for His glory. We have to walk it out though. Choose life. Choose great work by working for the Great One! ⓚ

Alternatively, 'ind something else while still giving my best. Here’s the thing though – If I stay but continue to complain, that in itself is also a choice, whether made consciously or not. I too have wasted so much time in this trap and in the process missed so many opportunities to let His glory manifest through me because I was too focussed on being unhappy with my job. So now I choose to not live in regret of those lost moments, but constantly ask God to let me see things from His perspective. I really believe that as we delight ourselves in the Lord, like the Psalmist says, He will reframe the desires of our

Debt can create a real unpleasant and unwanted experience in one’s life. The burden of being in debt or being over indebted creates strain and in most cases, stagnates future plans and goals.

M

y greatest regret concerning past debt was not realising that I was surrendering my 'inancial freedom to a Debt Master who is seeking to control my income and the right to decide to be a good steward. God provides us with the strength, ability and wisdom for us to make sound 'inancial decisions that will enable us to sow back into His Kingdom. Unfortunately, so many

Christians use their gifts without consulting the Holy Spirit thereby becoming slaves to the very thing that should bring us freedom. The bible states in the book of Timothy “For the love of money is the root of all evil” from this Scripture we can clearly identify that it’s not money that is evil but the way we view money, the excessive attachment to money, rather than God and the plan He has for us through our 'inances.

WHAT IS THE MAIN PURPOSE OF WHY WE WORK TO EARN MONEY? WHAT DO WE SPEND OUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON? VALID QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF…

It is vital to always take in consideration the following before making debt of any kind: 1. Evaluate - Ensure that what you purchase satis'ies a need 2. Budget - draw up a simple list of monthly expenses versus your income 3. Do your research – search online to 'ind speci'ic items cheaper and check the quality of the item versus the cost 4. Keep track of daily expenses and make sure you keep a balanced lifestyle 5. If you are going to make on a loan of any kind, ensure that it creates long term value, e.g. buying a home means the value of the property will increase over time 6. Buying an expensive new car would not be the soundest investment as the value of the vehicle drops the minute you put pen to paper as the owner. Should this be the route you want to go, ensure that you are able to commit to the monthly repayments of the vehicle and that you have good vehicle insurance. 7. Wise Spending is the best way to move forward in life. Money and possessions are the second most referenced topic in the Bible – money is mentioned more than 800 times – and the message is clear: Nowhere in Scripture is debt viewed in a positive light.

Here are a few steps I had to take to free myself from the 'inancial burden of debt: • Repent from the decision of surrendering to unnecessary debt; • Take responsibility for past decisions by being discipline in in your re-payments which could be committing to a repayment plan (Debt Review or Debt Counselling might be an option to consider if you have too much debt) • Avoid impulse purchases. Don’t be fooled by clever marketing media platforms, this creates temptation and a false sense of need to buy. • Pay in full and in cash as far as possible. • Ask God, the Holy Spirit to direct your path in this matter. Be deliberate in abstaining from making credit card debt and personal loans. Ensure that you cater for your needs more than your desire to own. Most times we create debt to buy something we don’t need in order to impress someone we don’t know.

I realise that money is a resource that can create a blessing or a curse FOLLOWING CHRISTMAS AND THE FESTIVE SEASON, THE NEW YEAR IS HERE. Have we learned from our past -inancial mistakes and poor choices. Are we re-lecting on the consequences of those choices and have we decided to do things differently this time around. Well, I can con-idently say, I surely have. How about you?

Proverbs 22V7 – The rich rules over the poor and the borrower is the slave of the lender The Bible instructs us to help the poor and we can only do that when we have enough. Proverbs 19V17 - Whoever gives generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed Proverbs 22V9 – Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor

Consider the following Scriptures: Psalm 37V21 – The wicked borrows but does not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives

1 John 3V17 – But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?

Proverbs 3:27-28 – Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. Do not say to your neighbour “Go and come again tomorrow I will give it” – when you have it now…

I enjoy teaching my children and other young people about money and the negative impact of poor money decisions can create if used without consideration and planning. I realise that money is a resource that can create a blessing or a curse.

Some guidelines to follow in order to avoid unnecessary debt and bad 9inancial pitfalls:

Save, save and save some more – Start by saving a percentage of what you earn on a monthly basis which creates a mentality of saving.

I enjoy giving my children a certain amount of pocket money which they earned by doing certain chores in and around the house, and watch on what they spend it. This will give you a clear indication as to whether they are learning and applying good financial habits.

Avoid impulse purchases. Don’t be fooled by clever marketing media platforms, this creates temptation and a false sense of need to buy.

RISE AGAIN

FROM A FEELING OF FAILURE TO FAILING FORWARD

words RISHON NAPHTALI

Do you believe in zerodefects? I used to, until I realised how unrealistic it is. Unrealistic meaning, not to recognise the truth about a situation and the dif'iculties involved in achieving something. Striving towards excellence, on the other hand, is a good thing. It refers to something above the norm, of a high quality and standard. Striving for excellence motivates and inspires you. Perfection on the other hand can demoralize you.

f there’s one thing I keep seeing around me, are people who feel like failures. But, are they really failures or do they only feel like failures? It saddens me to see beautiful and talented people struggle with their self-value, yet years back I was one of those who expected perfection from myself. I didn’t make allowance for mistakes in my own life. The word “failure” and “surrender” were words I regarded as a sign of weakness. I wrongly believed that I needed to be productive all the time and felt guilty when I just sat and relaxed. How ridiculous I was! I set incredible high standards for myself and expected the same from others around me, until God showed me that I was actually trying so hard to 'ind acceptance of myself. I thought I needed to be perfect to be accepted by others, but the truth was, it was actually to accept myself. Years ago I was backstabbed by a business partner. Anyone know what I am talking about? Yea, there are many of us out there. She turned against me, because of her own sel'ish motives. I saw a trail of “dead bodies” lying behind her, of which I was one. It took me two years to get over the shock. I !1 06

felt I had made a mistake by entering into an agreement with her. I lost a huge amount of money, the business closed down, people who she had lied to turned against me. I was in shock and felt like a complete failure. “Where did I go wrong?” I wondered, blaming myself. I wanted to take the reins into my own hands. I wanted to go to court, however God clearly said to me, “SURRENDER”. He convinced me that He would work behind the scenes, “not by might but by His Spirit” (Zech 4:6). When a situation seems out of our own control, God’s Spirit of truth searches and tests hearts (1 Cor 2:10, Gal 6:4). I had to trust God’s Spirit of truth to minister into her heart. Years later I did in fact receive an apology. God’s Spirit is alive! Feel like a failure? Get John Maxwell’s book called, Failing Forward. It changed my way of looking at failures. I used to associate mistakes with being a loser, disappointment and failure. Today I realise that mistakes are mere HURDLES for us to climb over, so that we can move towards the next and higher step of the ladder of life. Come on, let’s be realistic – is there really anyone out there that has never made a mistake? Surely not! Look at Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Edison for instance. ISSUE 4

I wanted to take the reins into my own hands. I wanted to go to court, however God clearly said to me, “SURRENDER”.

Was Abraham Lincoln a failure? This is his story: • Failed in business at age 21 • Was defeated in a legislative race at age 22 • Failed again in business at age 24 • He overcame the death of his sweetheart at age 26 • He had a nervous breakdown at age 27 • Lost a congressional race at age 34 • Lost a congressional race at age 36 • Lost a senatorial race at age 45 • Failed in an effort to become vicepresident at age 47 • Lost a senatorial race at age 49 • Was elected president of the United States at age 52

I leave you with this profound proverb, “For a righteous man falls seven times and rises again…” (Proverbs 24:16). The mistakes we’ve made in life do not determine our value. If someone’s made you to believe that, it is a lie. It’s about getting up and learning from those mistakes that distinguishes us from the rest. Failures are part of real life. Getting over ourselves make of us victors. When we change a negative into a positive. As God’s Word says, “Those who are born of God are victorious over the world.” (1 John 5:4) Go on then – be an overcomer, be a victor! Conquer the ways of the world. Don’t look back. Always look forward. ⓚ

Could he have become President if he had seen these events of his life as failures? Not likely. Was Thomas Edison a failure? When Thomas Edison tried 9,999 times to perfect the light bulb and hadn’t succeeded, someone asked him, “Are you going to have ten thousand failures? He answered, “I didn’t fail. I just discovered another way not to invent the electric light bulb.” He had discovered how another set of actions had produced a different result.

THE CAPE RAND a plausible possibility #NewCurrencyAlert A recent study identi'ied the Western Cape as the most plausible province in South Africa to develop its own currency. A test case reveals that the Western Cape is eligible for its own currency as it has the most economically developed region in SA. Along with various other reasons, the province is also not reliant on mineral resources that follow

However, if the Cape were to create its own currency it would surely heighten its economic advantages but this could also negatively affect the rest of South Africa.
