Roh Young-hee Consumers consider the size and weight

of a plate, and often people ask whether ceramic plates break easily. For consumers, the price tag, which is not small, is always a factor. So I think it’s important to use ceramics from a young age. If you become used to the feel, the stable weight and their beauty, you realize that ceramics are not far removed from everyday life. I hope a lot of handmade crockery are produced for children.

Krafts What did you stress in the food styling lecture for

the artists?

Roh Young-hee Isn’t the best design one that offers good

utility? Being true to the basics, the right size and the ability to be matched with other plates. For Korean crockery, we need the rice bowl, soup bowl, spoon and chopstick base, cup and plates for side dishes, but (artists) start with large plates or bowls. I think simple and useful pieces should come first and then plates that act as the focal point should be added. What I mean is that plates that are too elaborate or neither this or that, they don’t bring the customer back.

Also, looking at other people’s creations is just as important as what one produces oneself.

Krafts Is there a food styling tip non-professionals need to

remember?

Roh Young-hee At home, using crockery that is slightly

larger than needed makes the food stand out. Using a plate size of your hand for food that could be placed in a small dish makes the food seem much more splendid than they really are.

기 제작은 우리나라에서 토기에서부터 이어져 내려오는 공예 기술 중 하나다. 백자, 분청, 청자 등 다른 도자에 비해서 깊

은 역사를 가지고 있는 우리나라만의 고유한 도자 분야 중 하나다. 너무 흔해서 도자기 범주 내에 옹기가 들어간다고 생각을 못한다. 오히려 예로부터 우리나라 전역에서 일반 서민들이 더 없이 친근하 게 이용해오던 도자기다. 오늘날, 옹기가 현대 생활 속에서 다른 그 릇과 어우러질 수 있도록 노력하고 있다. 옹기는 다른 도자기와 달리 부엽토(소나무 잎이 떨어져서 썩은 황 토 흙)와 재를 이용한 천연 유약을 사용해서 초벌을 하지 않고 소성 을 한다. 저장용기로서 다른 도자기에 비해 발효가 잘 되는 장점이 있다. 옹기 항아리의 경우 기공이 많이 발생할 수 있도록 사질(우리 나라 찻사발을 만드는 흙으로 모래성질이 포함돼 있음)이 많은 흙을 사용해 통기성을 갖추도록 한다. 물입자는 나가지 않고 공기가 더 잘 통해서 발효가 더 잘된다. 옹기는 오랜 역사를 거쳐온 만큼 소위 말하는 백자의 풍만함, 청자 의 정교함, 토기의 기교 모두를 복합적으로 갖추고 있다. 전통을 계 승하면서도 옹기만의 새로운 가치를 개발해 대중들에게 옹기의 새 로운 모습을 알려주고 싶다.

ome designs are focused on the use of a product, while sometimes spontaneous designs also fulfill

ergonomic aspects of a product. The creations of Gallery Hwi, operated by the artist couple Lee Jun-beom and Hwang Yoon-mi, are closer to the latter.

that designs are all quite similar. I wanted to break away from that. To imagine something new.

그러나 우리가 늘 잊고 있는 부분이 있다. 고유의 삶과 정신 그리고
