축사 대한민국 대표 도자 도시 이천은 세계 각국의 공예인들과 고유의 문화유산을 소개하는 세계문화유산박람회(Salon International Du Patrimoine Culturel)에 참여하여 한국 전통 도자 명장들의 예술혼을 선보이게 되어 대단히 기쁘게 생각합니다. 이천시는 2010년 공예 및 민속예술 분야 유네스코 창의도시로 지정되었고 2018년 공예 분야 30개국 37개 도시의 의장 도시로 선정되어 대한민국은 물론 세계를 대표하는 도자 공예도시라고 할 수 있습니다. 천년의 도자 역사를 자랑하는 이천은 풍부한 자원과 인적 인프라를 기반으로 예로부터 왕실 납품 도자기를 제작하던 공방이 즐비했던 곳으로 오늘날까지 그 전통을 이어오고 있습니다. 오랜 역사와 전통을 바탕으로 수십 년째 한길만을 걸으며 도자 문화 계승과 발전에 힘써온 도자 명장, 그리고 선조의 우수한 기술에 창의적이고 현대적인 감각을 가미한 수공예 도자 기를 제작하는 공방 400여 곳이 어우러져 대한민국 도자 생산의 중심을 이루고 있습니다.

또한 이천시는 아시아, 아메리카, 유럽 등 세계각지에서 열리는 도자 공예 전시와 박람회 에 활발하게 참여하고 있으며 국제문화교류 행사를 주최하는 등 대한민국의 도자문화 세 계화에 앞장서고 있습니다. 제24회 세계문화유산박람회에서는 한국도자기의 아름다움은 물론 일평생 도공의 삶을 살며 전통기술을 고수하는 7명의 명장이 현장에서 직접 도자기 제작 시연을 펼칩니다. 시공을 뛰어넘은 한국전통 도자공예의 역사와 기술을 직접 보고, 느끼고, 소통할 수 있는 매우 소중한 시간이 될 것이라고 확신합니다. 대한민국, 이천도자기 명장들이 선보이는 천년 세월의 한국 전통 도자 공예의 아름다움을 만끽하시기 바랍니다.

Greetings from the Mayor It is my pleasure to announce that Icheon’s masters of traditional Korean ceramics are taking part in the International Heritage Fair.

Icheon was named UNESCO “City of Crafts and Folk Art” in 2010, and the chair city for a crafts association that includes 37 cities from 30 countries in 2018. Such international recognition has cemented the city’s reputation as the leading center of ceramic arts both in Korea and the world.

Icheon’s history spans more than a millennium, a history that underpins today’s robust artistic infrastructure and culture. Icheon’s ceramics once graced the halls of royal palaces, and this rich tradition continues to this day.

The city is currently home to over 400 workshops and master craftspeople that combine ancestral techniques with modern sensibilities to produce ceramics to the same standard and beauty as ever before.

By hosting international events at home and participating in exhibitions and expositions the world over, Icheon leads the effort to globalize Korea’s ceramics culture. The 24th International Heritage Fair will see seven master craftspeople who have dedicated their lives to their arts demonstrate their skills for the world to see.

I am certain that the event will welcome visitors to see and experience the skills of the masters and feel the history of Korean ceramics for themselves.

I hope you will enjoy the beauty of traditional Korean ceramics that has been – and continues to be – kept alive for a thousand years by our masters of Icheon, Korea.

환영사 프랑스 세계문화유산박람회는 전세계 전통 공예와 유 무형 문화재의 가치와 우수성을 ˙ 널리 알리고 다음 세대를 위한 효율적인 보존방식을 홍보하기 위해 매년 루브르 박물 관 내 카루젤 홀(Carrousel du Louvre)에서 열리는 대표적인 공예 장인 문화유산 박 람회입니다. 세계문화유산장인박람회는 프랑스 대통령과 프랑스 문화부 그리고 유네스코가 후원하고 프랑스 공예장인협회(Atelier d’Art de France)가 주최하는 국제적인 문화행사로써 유럽, 프랑스 및 전세계 14개국 약 350개의 문화재관련 단체와 관련자들이 참여하여 각국의 전통공예 장인들을 소개하고 화합을 도모하는 중요한 문화교류의 장입니다. 올해로 제24회를 맞는 이번 박람회는 유네스코 창의도시이자 아시아의 대표적인 도자기 의 고장, 경기도 이천시의 도자 명장들을 맞이하게 돼 매우 기쁩니다.

Greetings from the International Heritage Fair The International Heritage Fair is the world’s leading fair for promoting the value of tangible and intangible heritage, and for preserving and passing them down the generations. The event is held each year at the Carrousel du Louvre of the Louvre.

The International Cultural Heritage Fair is an event under the high patronage President of the French Republic, UNESCO and the French Ministry of Culture, and organized by the Atelier d’Art de France.

The event attracts about 350 organizations from 14 countries around the world, who come to spotlight traditional craftspeople of their countries.

We are pleased to welcome the master craftspeople of Icheon, the UNESCO “City of Crafts and Folk Art,” to the 24th International Heritage Fair.

We thank the city of Icheon, the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the masters of Icheon for making the first European demonstration of Korean traditional pottery making possible.

The demonstration will not only be an unforgettable experience for the visitors, but provide a meaningful opportunity to introduce Korea’s ceramics culture to Europe.

기획자의 말 한국의 도자기가 세계 도자 역사 발전에 지대한 영향을 미쳤다는 사실을 아는 이는 그리 많지 않습니다. 겉으로 드 러내 뽐내기를 즐기지 않고 겸손을 미덕으로 삼는 민족성 때문이기도 하고, 제작 수준이 다르기는 하지만 세계 어느 민족 누구나 만들 수 있는 도자기를 굳이 나서서 알릴 필요가 있을까 하는 정적이고 소극적인 마음이 이유입니다. 한반도에서는 지금부터 약 10,000년 전 처음 토기를 만들어 사용하기 시작하였습니다. 이후 수천 년 동안 고온번 조기술을 발달시켜 삼국시대(1세기~7세기)에는 좀 더 단단한 경질 토기를 완성했고, 9·10세기에는 중국에 이어 세계에서 두 번째로 청자와 백자를 만들어냄으로써 인류 도자 문화 발전에 큰 역할을 하였습니다. 고려(10세기~14세기)의 우수한 금속 공예 기술은 12세기 비색의 상감청자를 탄생시켜 고려청자를 세계 최고의 수준으로 끌어올렸습니다. 고려청자의 성공은 분청사기를 거쳐 조선백자로 이어졌습니다. 14세기, 세계인의 관 심이 순도 높고 단단한 백자로 옮겨졌을 때, 아시아의 백자는 단연 으뜸으로 여겨졌습니다. 조선 왕실은 1467년 경 관요를 설치하여 왕실 및 관청용 고급 백자를 생산해 백자 기술의 발전에 한 획을 그었다고 평가되며, 이후 조 선 전역에서 백자가 널리 유행하였을 뿐 아니라 16세기 후반에 일본에 전파되어 동아시아와 세계 도자사의 판도 를 바꾸는 계기를 만들기도 했습니다. 17세기 한 동안 도자 산업이 잠시 위축되긴 했지만 18세기 영·정조 시대 (1724년~1800년)에 다시 크고 당당한 자태에 섬세한 청화 문양을 넣은 고급백자들이 만들어져 조선백자의 부 흥기를 누렸습니다. 이렇듯 큰 역할에도 한국 도자기가 베일에 싸인 또 다른 이유는 조선이 서양과 문호개방에 적극적이지 않았다는 것 14

입니다. 그러나 그 덕분에 한국의 도자기는 외부의 영향을 거의 받지 않고 고유한 전통과 문화를 유지해 올 수 있 었기에 오늘날에 가치가 더 크다 할 수 있습니다. 예나 지금이나 한국의 전통도자기, 제작기법 그리고 그들의 삶과 작품을 직접 보고 듣고 느끼고 싶어 하는 많은 세 계인에게 이천 도자기 명장들이 한국의 전통도자기를 알리고자 직접 나섰습니다. 이천에는 선조들이 남겨준 유구한 도자 전통을 기반으로 활발히 활동 중인 23명의 도자기 명장이 있습니다. 각자 도자기 종주국의 명장으로서 사명감으로 전통 도자 기술을 보존, 계승에 힘쓰고 있습니다. 이천시는 이천 도자기 명장 7명을 모시고 프랑스 세계문화유산박람회 현장에서 직접 도자기 제작 시연을 선보이 기로 했습니다. 한 명장의 말처럼 “건강이 허락하는 한” 도자기를 만들어 달라는 곳이 있으면 우리는 세계 어느 곳 이라도 갈 준비가 돼 있습니다. 세계문화유산박람회에서 구두 또는 글로만 전해지고 있는 한국 전통도자기법의 우수성과 이천 도자기 명장들의 삶과 예술을 널리 알리고자 합니다. 이천시 문화관광과 도예팀

Message from the Project Manager It is a little known fact that Korea has had a significant influence on pottery across the world. This is partly because of the importance out ancestors placed on humility. It is also partly due to the timid approach Korea has had over the years in promoting such facts.

Earthenware first appeared on the Korean Peninsula about 10,000 years ago. Over the millennia that followed, techniques of firing pottery at high temperatures were refined, and stronger earthenware was developed during the Three Kingdoms Period (1st century to 7th century). During the 9th and 10th centuries, Koreans pursued the Chinese in developing celadon and white porcelain.

During the Goryo period (10th century to 14th century), advanced metal working technologies were developed, giving rise to Goryo celadon with metal inlays. The advanced Goryo celadon gave rise to the Buncheong technique, which in turn laid the foundations for the white porcelain works of the Joseon period.

During the 14th century, when strong white porcelain became a much sought-after item across the world, Asian products were valued above all else. The royal family of the Joseon Dynasty established a royal workshop in 1467 to supply high-quality white porcelain pieces to the palaces and government offices. Its establishment is considered to have significantly advanced technologies related to white porcelain, and led to white porcelain gaining popularity across the country. In addition, Joseon’s white porcelain technologies were passed onto Japan in the 16th century, a development that became the foundations for changing this history of pottery in Asia and the world. Although the ceramics industry experienced difficulties in the 17th century, it bloomed again between 1724 and 1800.

Despite such influences it has had, Korean ceramics culture has relatively unknown due to Joseon Dynasty’s reluctance to engage the West. However, such policies have helped in preserving traditional methods and culture of Korean pottery.

The masters of Icheon are taking a proactive role in making the culture of traditional Korean pottery – the techniques, as well as the lives and works of the masters – more accessible to the world.

Today, there are 23 master craftspeople who have built upon traditional culture and methods passed down through the generations. Every one of the masters have dedicated their lives to preserving, and passing on traditional methods.

This year, Icheon is taking seven of the masters to the International Heritage Fair, where they will demonstrate their pottery making processes. Icheon is ready to go anywhere in the world where pottery is appreciated.

At the International Heritage Fair, the city plans to show the world the art and lives of the masters.

편집장의 말 우리 문화를 전승(傳承)한다는 자부심으로 지난 수십 년간 도자기를 빚어온 사람들이 있습 니다. 크라프츠가 지난 9월 만나본 이천시 소속 7인의 명장들이 바로 그들입니다. 분청 위에 새겨진 기계로 찍어낸 듯 정교한 꽃무늬부터 여러 흙을 섞어 표현한 연리문(練 理紋) 청자의 대리석 문양, 그 자체만으로 하늘에 떠 있는 달을 보는 듯 한 맑은 달항아리 등 인고의 시간을 거쳐 탄생한 결과물에 명장의 손길이 닿지 않는 곳은 찾아보기 힘듭니 다. 제작 과정에서 명장의 기준에 충족하지 못한 도자기들은 가차 없이 깨지기 일쑤입니다. 우리 고유의 재료와 기법으로 흙에 혼과 열정을 담아오고 있는 명장들은 이천시의 젊은 도 공들뿐만 아니라 이 시대를 살아가는 젊은이들 사이에서 본보기 역할을 해오고 있습니다. 효율성과 대량생산의 시대에서 ‘세기의 명작을 만들어야 한다’는 고집스러운 철학과 타협 하지 않는 기술력, 정교함은 시대를 막론한 귀중한 정신입니다.

명장의 손끝에서 탄생하는 형태, 색, 문양은 그대로 전승되어 각 세대를 이어주기도 합니 다. 젊은 예술인에게는 창작의 영감을, 보는 이에게는 깊은 울림과 감동을 끌어냅니다. 앞으로도 중요한 것은 선대의 철학과 기술을 이해하고 지키려는 지속적인 노력입니다. 문 화적 밑바탕 위에 현대 가치와 감성이 더해져 새로운 전통이 탄생할 수 있습니다. 그 일은 비단 명장들만의 몫이 아닙니다. 이 시대를 살아가는 우리 모두의 몫입니다.

Editor’s Note There are craftspeople who have dedicated decades to the art of ceramics, driven by the purpose of conserving traditional culture. They are the seven masters of Icheon that KRAFTS have met in September.

From the exquisite flower patterns stamped on to Buncheong, and the marbled yeonrimun celadon to the Moon Jar that captures the beauty of the moon in the night sky. Their creations are the results of patience, and the meticulous touch of the masters. And works that do not meet the standards of the masters are cast aside.

The masters capture their soul and passion in clay through traditional methods.

Through their dedication and passion, the master craftsmen are setting examples not only for young ceramicists of Icheon but for all young people.

The stubborn philosophy of striving to create a masterpiece, their uncompromising skill is the expression of an invaluable spirit that transcends the times.

The shapes, colors and the patterns created by the masters’ hands also act as a bridge between generations. To young artists, their creations are breaths of inspiration, and to the observer they create a resonance of awe.

One of the most important task left to us is to understand and preserve the philosophies and techniques of our ancestors. Combining cultural heritage with modern values and sensibilities can lead to the birth of new traditions. Such a task is not the sole burden of the masters, but for each and every one of us.

이향구 명장의 ‘남양도예’ 공방 입구에는 큼지막한 장작 가마 가 터를 잡고 있다. 전통 방식으로 도자기를 구워내고 있다는 뜻이다. “우리 선조 도공들이 이용한 제작 방법을 보존, 발전 시키자는 생각으로 이 가마를 만들었습니다. 제 요장을 찾는 사람들에게도 전통을 생각하는 제 마음이 전해졌으면 하는 바람으로 지금도 가마에 도자기를 굽고 있습니다.” 이 명장이 처음 도자기를 시작한 건 49년 전 1969년, 중학교 를 졸업하자마자다. ‘도공의 기술을 배워 평생 먹고 살겠다’ 는 일념으로 도자기 물레를 배우기 시작했다. 당시 고향인

While all other artists have chosen the more convenient electric kilns, Master Lee eschews modernity for tradition. “[I] could make more perfect and more beautiful pottery with an electric kiln, but I built the traditional kiln in order to improve and develop on the methods our ancestors used,” Lee said. “I make pottery in the hopes that such tradition can also be felt by the visitors.”

삼천포에서 유일하게 돈을 벌 수 있는 곳이 도자기 공방이 기도 했다. 3년 후, 기술을 인정받아 서울에 있는 도자기 완 구 공장에 스카우트 돼 상경하게 됐다. 당시에는 기술을 배우 고 싶다는 욕심이 더 컸다. “그때만해도 명장이 될 줄은 꿈에도 몰랐습니다. 그냥 도자기 기술을 더 빨리 잘 배우고 싶단 생각 뿐이었어요.” 도자기를 시작한 지 10년 뒤, 경기도 이천에 내려와 도자기 공장에 취 직하고 그때부터 투각 백자를 만들기 시작했다. 당시에 투각 기법은 까다롭고 어려웠는데, 손재주가 좋았던 이 명장은 투 각 도자기를 만들면서 그 능력을 인정받기 시작했다. 밑바닥 부터 시작해 공장장의 자리에 오르기까지, 도자기를 빚으며 한 우물만 파던 그는 2005년 ‘이천 도자기명장’이 되었다. 이 명장의 공방은 ‘백자’ 일색이다. 젊었을 땐 백자, 청자, 분청을 모두 빚었지만 지금은 백자 전문가로 불린다. “백자 의 매력은 그림을 빼놓고 생각할 수 없어요.” 이 명장의 백자 에는 민화부터 전통 문양까지 다양한 그림들이 수놓아져 있 었다. 이 명장은 백자에 특별함을 입히는 우리 전통 그림의 중요성에 대해 한참을 설명했다.

town Samcheonpo 49 years ago, right after he graduated from middle school in 1969. A pottery workshop was also the only place he could find work, and he was quickly recognized for his skill at the spinning wheel.

Three years later, he went to Seoul after being scouted by a ceramic toy factory.

“I never dreamt of being a master. I simply wanted to learn more techniques quickly,” Lee said.

After a decade in the field, he began working at a ceramics factory in Icheon. It was there that he started creating white porcelain pieces with openwork designs.

Master Lee’s mastery of such a difficult technique coincided with increased recognition of his skills, where he first rose to the position of factory manager, then received the title of Master from the Incheon government in 2005.

His early portfolio ranged from white porcelain to celadon and Buncheong pieces. More recently, he has gained renown as an expert of white porcelain, examples of which fill his workshop as a testament to his dedication to the medium.

“The allure of the white porcelain is that [I] cannot separate the medium from painting [decorations],” Lee said.

“도자기는 종합 예술이에요. 흙으로 형태를 만들고 그 위에 그림을 그리고 유약을 바르고 며칠씩 가마 불을 때서 굽는 것 까지. 성형도 그림도 유약도, 불을 때는 방식 모두가 내 손을 안 거치는 게 없어요. 도자기는 제 삶이자 제 일부인 겁니다.” 이 명장의 자녀들도 도자기를 빚는다. “어려서부터 흙과 함께 놀고 자란 큰딸과 막내아들이 제 뒤를 이어 도자기를 한다는 게 뿌듯하고 자랑스럽습니다.” 내년이면 도자 인생 50년을 맞는 이 명장. 앞으로 빚어가고 싶은 삶은 무엇일까. “명장이 되기 전까지는 도자기 기술을 누 구에게 알려주지 않았어요. 그런데 명장이 되고서 명장으로 서 할 일이 무엇인지 고민했어요. 그리고 깨달았습니다. 내가 가진 기술을 배우고자 하는 사람들에게 전해주는 게 내게 주 어진 의무이자 업이라는 생각이 들더군요. 나라가 저를 명장 으로 뽑아 준 이유도 거기 있을 거라고 생각했습니다. 그때부 터 꿈이 생겼습니다. 남은 인생은 제가 평생 쌓은 기술을 보 다 많은 사람들에게 나누어 주는 데 쓰고 싶습니다.” 그리고 그 꿈은 이미 현재 진행형이다.

His pieces are adorned with a diversity of painted decorations – including folk paintings. His daughter, who majored in arts, has made significant contributions to his work. Her extensive work with pottery has its roots in painting.

“Pottery is a comprehensive art. From shaping the clay and painting to applying the glaze and firing the pieces, every step is carried out with my two hands,” Lee said. Commenting on his daughter’s work with pottery, he remarked, “[she] started out with painting, but she was drawn by the allure in the end.”

Coming up on a half century in the field, Master Lee has a goal for his professional life. “I never passed my knowledge to anyone until I was named a master,” he says, “but when I became a master, I wondered about what I should do as a master. It came to me that it is my duty and task to pass on techniques to those who want to learn.” He believes there is meaning in his achievement, stating, “I feel that that is the reason I was named a master, and that became a dream. I want to spend the rest of my life passing on my skills to other people.”

“청자 말고 다른 걸 해볼 생각은 안 했느냐고요? 청자를 하기에 도 시간이 없어요. 아마 평생 청자를 만들어도 다 못 만들 것 같 아요. 아직도 할 게 얼마나 많은데요.” 백자나 분청을 만들 생각 은 안 해봤냐는 질문에 되돌아온 답이었다. 최인규 명장은 도자기 일생 내내 청자를 빚었다. 그가 만든 청자 의 밑바닥에는 ‘푸를 벽(碧)’에 ‘구슬 옥(玉)’, ‘벽옥’이라 적혔다. 벽옥같이 푸르다는 뜻처럼 청자만 바라보며 한 길을 걸어왔다. 스승이었던 고(姑) 해강(海剛) 유근형 선생을 만난 건 47년 전. 공업고등학교 재학 중 도자기를 배우러 현장 실습을 나갔던 곳

“Have I thought about doing anything other than celadon pottery? Making celadon pottery takes up all my time. I think if I spent my entire life, it would still not be enough. There is just so much to do.”

This was Master Choi In-kyu’s answer to the question of whether he has considered trying his hand at white porcelain or the Bunchung method. Throughout his career, Choi has only made celadon pottery.

All his works are marked with the Chinese characters “碧 (byeok)” and “玉 (ock),” respectively meaning blue and jade, coming together to mean blue jasper.

이 해강의 작업실이었다. 철없던 시절 도자기와의 첫 조우는 그 리 큰 감흥을 주지 못했다. 하지만, 군대 제대 후 도자기를 하겠 다고 마음먹고 발길을 돌린 곳은 다시 이천의 해강도요였다. “ 도자기 분야에서 일인자가 되겠다는 마음을 먹었어요.” 우연은 그렇게 최 명장을 운명처럼 끌어당겼다. “그야말로 시계처럼 작업했어요. 그만두고 싶다거나 다른 곳에 눈을 돌릴 겨를이 없었어요.” 능력 있고 성실한 도공 청년에게 수많은 유혹과 역경이 있었지만 최 명장은 그런 제의를 모두 거 절하고 우직하게 한 스승 곁을 지켰다. 성실하고 곧은 성품에 스 승도 곧 그를 인정했다. 20년을 한결같이 배운 끝에 1991년, 지 금의 ‘장휘요’ 간판을 걸고 독립했다. 그리고 2005년 ‘이천 도자 기명장’ 에 이어 2017년 9월 ‘대한민국 명장’ 칭호를 얻게 됐다. 명장이 된 뒤에도 배움에는 끝이 없었다. 지금도 매일같이 스승 의 유작이 전시된 박물관을 찾아 눈에 담고 돌아와 빚기를 반복 한다. “유작을 꺼내 보고 있으면 ‘스승님을 따라가려면 아직도 멀었다’는 생각이 들어요. ‘언제쯤이면 이렇게 만들 수 있을까’ 하면서 또다시 작업에 몰두하는 거죠. 지금도 배우는 중이에요.” 하지만, 역설적이게도 최 명장에게 앞으로 남은 숙제는 ‘탈(脫)

gan 47 years ago, when he met his teacher Master ‘Haegang’ Yoo Keun-hyung. Choi was studying at a technical high school, and he was sent to Yoo’s workshop for his work experience. This brief exposure was enough to spark something inside him, and he returned to Yoo’s workshop in Icheon after his military service.

“I was determined to become the best in the field of pottery,” Choi said, recalling the fateful day. “I worked like clockwork. There was no time for my attention to stray nor for me to think about something else.”

One by one, Yoo’s other students left in search of better pay, but Choi remained steadfast at his teacher’s side. After 20 years of training under his teacher, he opened his own workshop ‘Janghwi-yo’ in 1991.

In 2005, he earned the title of pottery master from Icheon, and in September last year he was given the title of Korean Master Hand. For a master like Choi, however, this was not a time to rest on his laurels. He has never stopped learning, continuing with regular visits to the museum where his teacher’s last creations are on display every day.

“When I look at his works, I think ‘I still have so far

해강’이다. “해강 선생님에게 배웠기 때문에 저를 이만큼 인정해 주는구나 하는 생각도 있지만 또 한편으로는 선생님의 작품을 벗 어나야 한다는 생각이 들어요. 작품을 보면 ‘아 최인규 명장 작 품이구나’라고 알아볼 수 있는 저 다운 작품을 만들고 싶어요.” 최 명장의 작업실 한쪽에는 초벌구이 상태의 작품부터 아직 가 마에 구워지지 않은 작품들이 줄지어져 있다. 불에 구워지지 않 아 무채색의 빛을 띤 채로, 푸른빛을 가슴 깊숙하게 감추고 있 는 것처럼. “저는 작품을 빚고 바로 가마에 넣지 않아요. 굽고 싶 은 생각이 들 때까지 절대 굽지 않는 거죠. 구우면 어떤 모습이 될지를 오랜 시간을 두고 상상해봐요. ‘이젠 구워도 되겠다’ 싶 을 때, 그때 가마에 넣어요. 굽기까지 5년이 걸린 작품도 있었 을 정도니까요. 그래야 제 맘에 드는 빛깔이 나오는 것 같아요.” 굽고 난 뒤에야 비로소 완성되는 도자기의 특성상 쉽게 가마에 넣지 못했으리라. 특히, 1200도가 넘는 불을 견디고 나서야 제 빛깔이 나오는 청자는 더욱 그러했을 터. 하지만, 최 명장의 청 자를 더욱 빛나게 하는 건 흙에서부터 굽기까지 걸리는 인고의 시간이 아니라 도자기를 대하는 그의 우직하고 올곧은 성품과 정성을 다하는 마음인 듯했다.

to go.’ I think to myself ‘when will I be able to reach that level,’ as I focus on my work. I am still learning,” he said. Paradoxically, however, Choi’s biggest challenge is breaking away from his teacher.

“I think that I receive the recognition I do because I learned from my teacher, but on the other hand I feel I have to break away from him. I want to create my own style that anyone can recognize as ‘Choi In-kyu’s work.’”

Part of this is the thought and feeling Choi puts into every piece, giving rise to a workshop full of unfinished works, from bisques to unfired pieces.

“I don’t go straight to the kiln, I wait until I feel the time is right. I imagine what they will look like after being fired for a long time,” he said. “I take them to the kiln once I feel the time is right. There is a piece that I waited five years.

I feel that only when I feel the time is right, the colors come out the way I want them to.”

What finally emerges from the kiln is truly the issue of the experienced Korean Master Hand. Though Choi’s caution may also be due to the temperatures in excess of 1,000 degrees Celsius celadon requires, it is inarguable that his mastery combines with his unwavering dedication to his craft that lends a true shine to his celadon works.

거칠어 다루기 힘들고 소성하는 동안 불순물이 녹아 표면에 검 은 점무늬가 번진다. ‘투박하고 서민적인 그릇.’ 그래서 정이 갔다. 고려 시대 청자와 조선 시대 백자 사이에 불같이 일어나 서민들의 생활에 자리 잡았던 분청. 유용철 명장은 지난 35년 간 서민들의 삶을 닮은 분청 위에 꽃을 피워냈다. 그가 만든 분청 위의 꽃은 어느 무늬 하나 그의 손길을 거치지 않은 것이 없다. 기계로 찍어낸 듯 정교한 꽃무늬는 유 명장의 고집스러운 철학에서 비롯된 결과물이다. “인화문(印花紋)(꽃 모양으로 도장을 찍는 기법)을 하는 데 보통 5개 종류 도장을

3~4000번 정도 새겨요. 그중에 하나라도 힘 조절을 잘못해서 깊이 들어가거나 찌그러지면 가차 없이 깨버려요. 수정을 할 수 도 있지만 제가 생각하는 좋은 도자기는 도예가 스스로 만족하 는 작품입니다. 저한테 완벽하지 않은 도자기는 남에게도 사랑 받지 못한다고 생각해서 아깝지만 그렇게 깨버립니다.” 유 명장은 태어날 때부터 흙을 만졌다. 유 명장의 아버지는 외 할아버지에게 도자기를 배웠고 유 명장은 또 아버지에게 도자 기를 배웠다. 처음부터 도예로 진로를 정한 것은 아니었다. 아 버지는 아들이 몸이 고된 도자기 일보단 공부를 하길 원하셨다. 그 뜻에 따라 대학에 진학했고 항공사에서 정비 일을 하게 됐 다. 하지만 머릿속에 늘 아른거리는 것은 다름 아닌 도자기였다. 군대에 다녀오자마자 아버지에게 도자기를 배우고 싶다고 했 다. 아버지에겐 선전포고나 다름없었다. 당시 나이 24살. 극구 만류하던 아버지도 결국 유 명장에게 두 손을 들 수밖에 없었 다. “그렇게 처음 인화문을 배우기 시작했어요. 분청 표면에 꽃 모양 도장을 찍는 작업만 10년을 했죠.” 지금은 눈 감고도 찍 는다고 하지만, 일정한 깊이로 찍는다는 것은 고되고 오랜 수 행이 필요했다. 그로부터 약 15년 후, 마흔 살이 되던 해에 유

ophy and search for perfection. “I used inhwamun (印花紋, a technique using flower-shaped stamps) technique, and usually five different stamps are used 3,000 to 4,000 times. If any one of them goes in too deep or the shape is skewed, I destroy [the piece] without hesitation,” he said. “I could fix them, but that would mean I am selling something that has been fixed rather than something that is perfect. I think I want my creations, which are like my children, to be valued wherever they go.”

Yu’s began his relationship with clay at a very young age, learning from his father who had learned pottery from Yu’s maternal grandfather. Despite the family background, Yu’s father wanted him to study, rather than take on the hard work involved in pottery.

Upholding his father’s wishes, Yu went to university, starting his professional life as an engineer for an airline. Yet try as he might, Yu could not keep his hands out of the clay.

At the age of 24, right after he was discharged from the military, Yu asked his father to teach him the trade. Yu’s father tried to dissuade him, but to no avail. “So I started learning the inhwamun technique

3대째 가업을 이어 도자기를 빚어온 유 명장. 수만 개, 어쩌면 수천만 개에 이르는 꽃을 찍을 동안 포기는 생각해 본 적이 없 었다. “’천직’이라는 생각이 들어요. 도자기를 하고 있을 때 마 음이 제일 편하고 작품을 하고 있을 때가 제일 행복해요. 앞으 로도 분청에 꽃을 피워낼 수 있는 동력이지 않을까요?”

“I wanted to learn diverse techniques, but I had nobody to ask about them. So, I decided to go to school, where I could ask all the questions I wanted,” he said, recalling going back to school at the age of 45. In 2016, Icheon bestowed the title of master on him. Sadly, Yu’s father, his harshest critic, had already passed away. “[My father] would say ‘how did you receive an award with a piece like this?’ when I won an award.

He was a harsh critic of his son, but that’s the way he expressed himself although he felt proud on the inside. I am sure he would have been happy to see me named a master,” Yu said.

Over the past 35 years, Yu has stamped millions of flower patterns. Giving up and moving on to something else has never crossed his mind. “I feel it’s my destiny. I feel most at ease when making pottery and most comfortable when I am working on a piece.

Perhaps this is my drive to continue making flowers bloom on Buncheong.”

“전통도자기에 대한 환상이랄까, 거기서 시작된 거죠.” 환상 으로 시작된 도자기는 이제 현실이자 일상이 돼 물레를 돌리 는 동력이 됐다. 전통도자기를 배우겠다고 이천으로 내려온 지 35년, 김용섭 명장이 청년 시절 가졌던 환상은 깨지기는커 녕 더 좋은 작품을 만들기 위한 고민으로 채워졌다. “싫증 나 지 않냐고요? 전혀요. 온종일 앉아 있어도 싫증 나지 않아요. 내 천직이구나 그런 생각이 들기까지 해요. 재밌어요. 지금도, 여전히(웃음).” 그가 도자기에 처음 발을 들인 건 도공을 양성하는 6개월짜 리 도자기 교육 프로그램이었다. 대부분 도자기 공장 등에 취

“Perhaps you could say it all began from a fantasy about traditional ceramics,” Master Kim Yong-sup says. “Do I not get bored? I can spend the whole day sitting [at work] and I don’t get bored. Sometimes I feel this is my destiny. It’s fun. Even now,” he laughs. It is that fantasy and destiny that powers his pottery wheel and has inspired him as a ceramicist in Icheon.

Kim’s first encounter with pottery was a six-month training program 35 years ago. While most of the trainees wound up pursuing a commercial path,

직해 도기 제품을 만드는 길로 빠졌지만 김 명장은 전통 도자 기를 제대로 만들어보고 싶다는 생각이 들었다. 그렇게 무작 정 경기도 이천으로 내려와 전통도자기 공방을 찾아다녔다. 그때 만난 스승이 혁산(赫山) 방철주 선생이었다. 그 밑에서 22년을 배웠다. 김 명장이 2004년 독립을 하자마자 처음으로 한 일은 공방에 있는 성형 기계를 전부 버리는 거였다. “온전히 물레 성형으 로만 하자고 마음먹었어요. 사람 마음이 간사해서 옆에 기계 가 있으면 자꾸 그걸 사용하고 싶은 유혹에 빠지기 쉽거든요. 근데 아예 없으면 생각조차 안 하잖아요. 그래서 고물 장수에 게 팔아버렸죠. 당시엔 사람들이 저한테 다 바보라고 했어요. 그래도 저는 무조건 손으로만 만들겠다고 다짐했어요. 지금도 100% 물레 성형으로 모든 걸 다 만들고 있어요. 그래서 지금 이렇게 명장이 된 것 같기도 해요.” 지금까지 모든 작품을 물레를 차서 만들었다는 김 명장. “지 금도 물레가 제 주전공이에요. 수백, 수천 개를 기계처럼 똑 같이 만들 수 있어요. 제가 바로 살아있는 기계가 된 셈입니다 (웃음).” 그렇게 독립한 지 단 10여 년만인 2015년, ‘이천 도 자기명장’에 선정됐다. “명장이 된 뒤로 책임감을 무겁게 느끼 고 있어요. 사소한 행동이라도 남한테 모범이 돼야 한다는 생

Kim’s urge was to master the art of traditional pottery. This is what drove him to Icheon, where he met his teacher Hyuksan Bang Chul-ju, under whose tutelage he remained for 22 years.

The first thing he did when he went independent in 2004 was to throw away mechanical tools for shaping clay.

“I was determined to only use the wheel, and your will can waver if there are machines at hand, so I sold them to a scrapper,” Kim said. “Everyone said I was stupid, but I was determined to do everything by hand. I still do everything by hand on the wheel. I think that is how I became a master.”

Kim, who continues to use only his hands and the wheel to this day, says that the pottery wheel is his field of expertise.

“The ability to make hundreds, thousands of exact same shapes has become my asset,” said Kim, who was named a master in 2015, just 10 years after he set up his own workshop. “I feel a heavy responsibility since I was named a master. I feel that I need to set an example even with the slightest action. That is also part of the reason behind why I continue to

각을 많이 해요. 작품을 할 때도 계속 수작업을 고집하는 이 유기도 해요.” 김 명장의 대표적인 작품은 색이 다른 흙을 섞어 대리석 같은 문양을 내는 ‘연리문(練理紋)’ 청자다. 반죽을 너무 많이 하면 흙끼리 서로 완전히 섞여 무늬가 나오지 않고, 반죽을 덜 하면 공기가 빠지지 않아 구웠을 때 균열이 생긴다. 매우 까다로운 작업 중 하나지만, 김 명장이 가장 애착을 가지고 공을 들이고 있는 기법이다. “불량이 나올 가능성이 높다는 건 그만큼 좋은 작품이 나오게 될 가능성도 높다는 말이잖아요. 실패율이 높고 시행착오가 많을수록 좋은 작품이 나오는 법이니까요. 그래서 대형 작품을 해보고 싶어요. 오랜 시간이 걸리고 불량이 나올 확률도 매우 높지만 평생 가지고 가고 싶은 그런 작품이 나올 수도 있는 거니까요.” 김 명장은 35년 동안 물레를 돌렸지만, 아직도 갈 길이 멀다 고 말한다. 그래서 그의 물레질은 오늘도, 내일도 계속될 수 밖에 없다. “전통방식으로 도자기를 만든다는 것은 결과를 예 측할 수 없는 작업이에요. 생각지도 않은 실수와 생각지도 않 은 값진 작품이 나오기도 하는. 평생을 배워야 하는 게 도자 인 것 같아요.”

One of Kim’s most recognizable lines is the marbled or yeonrimun celadon, whose singular pattern comes from the mixing different clays. It is a difficult technique; if the clay is mixed too much the patterns do not come through, and mixing too little results in cracks.

Further elaborating on the complexity of his technique, Kim remarks, “I think that there being high probability of things going wrong also means that there is much more chance of a good piece being created, because the more you fail, the more you have to try. That is why I want to make large pieces.

It will take a lot of time and there is very high chance of failure, but the end product will be something you would want to keep forever.”

“It is a process the result of which you cannot predict,” he says of his craft. “Sometimes unexpected mistakes are made, and sometimes great pieces that you never dreamt of are created.”

Kim says that despite having dedicated 35 years to the art, he still has a long way to go, and so he continues. “I think that pottery is an art that requires a lifetime to learn.”

’원정(垣亭)’. 낮은 정자. “담이 낮아 누구나 쉽게 넘나들고 향 유할 수 있지만 저만의 정자, 저만의 색깔과 고집이 있다는 의 미에요. 제가 만드는 작품들도 이러한 맥과 크게 다르지 않은 것 같아요.” 박래헌 명장의 분청은 그의 호(號)이자 공방 이름처럼 누구에 게나 친근하게 다가가면서도 고유의 색깔을 갖고 있다. 서양화 를 전공했던 이력도 한몫한다. 분청 한 점 마다 한 폭의 벽화를 연상시키는 그림이 특징이다. “내가 느끼는 대로 표현하고 하 고 싶은 대로 모두 다 구현해 낼 수 있는 게 분청의 멋이에요.

“It embodies the meaning that I have my own colors, and a stubborn streak although the low walls gives access to everyone. I think my works share the same philosophy,” Park said. Just as the name suggests, Park’s Buncheong works are familiar yet have their own distinct color.

“Buncheong allows me to express anything I desire,

저는 도자기에 회화의 세상을 펼치고 싶어서 분청을 택했어요. 도자기 위에 있는 그림들을 펼쳐놓고 보면 한 폭의 그림이 돼 요. 저의 이런 회화적 장점을 극대화해준 것도 분청이기에 가 능했던 것 같아요.” 박 명장은 화가였던 아버지의 영향을 받아 일찌감치 예술에 눈 을 떴다. 대학에서 서양화를 전공했고 아버지의 권유로 도자기 를 배웠다. “물감으로 그리는 것보다 흙을 가지고 입체로 만드 는 게 더 좋았어요. 힘든 줄 모를 만큼 재미있었어요. 도자기를 할 팔자라는 생각을 그때 했습니다.” 대학 졸업 후 바로 경기도 이천으로 내려와 물레를 배웠다. 그리고 1996년, 전승공예대 전에서 21년 만에 처음 도자기 부문으로 대통령상을 받는 쾌거 를 거뒀다. “그 당시에는 제 작품이 파격적이었어요. 도자기에 창의적이고 회화적인 부분을 접목한 경우가 거의 없었거든요. 큰 상을 받고 도자기를 더 배우고 싶다는 욕심이 생겼습니다. 그래서 이듬해 대학원에 진학해 또다시 학생으로 돌아갔어요. 지금도 배움에는 끝이 없다고 생각해요(웃음)” 박 명장의 분청에는 유독 산이 많이 등장한다. 어린 시절 집 근 처 산에서 뛰어놀던 기억이 고스란히 반영됐다고 한다. “산을 제 관점으로 재구현한 거죠. 제가 분청에 그린 그림들은 대부분 제

and show my emotions. I chose to work with Buncheong to open a painted world on ceramics,” Park said. “If the designs on the pieces are spread out, each one becomes a mural. I think Buncheong is a medium that allows me to maximize my skills in painting.”

Park was introduced to painting from an early age under the guidance of his father, who was a painter. Park eventually went on to study fine arts at university, giving him a background in Western art that adds to the uniqueness of his work. It was finally at his father’s suggestion that Park shifted his focus to pottery, and pursuing that passion, he moved to Icheon immediately after graduating university. “I preferred making things to painting. I never tired of it.

I feel now that I was meant to be a potter,” Park said.

In 1996, Park won the presidential award in the traditional crafts competition. It was the first time in 21 years that the grand prize was awarded to a ceramicist. Winning the prestigious award sparked a yearning to learn more, and in the following year he enrolled at a graduate school.

Speaking about the themes in his work, Park reflects on mountains, saying, “I have reinterpreted

mountains from my perspective. Most of the designs I create are based on the nature from my childhood. Mountains, ponds and birds, I draw inspiration from nature.” His depiction of nature is also a depiction of love, where he says, “Everything in my works are in pairs to symbolize love. I envision a world in harmony in my work.”

The majority of his works are decorated with elaborate designs, but there is one type of pottery that he does not decorate. It is the moon jar.

“My motto is not to imitate art from the past, but the moon jar was different. Recreating the form in itself creates something that is like the moon in the sky, or the human body. The moon jar is an embodiment of beauty,” Park said.

“To me the title of master is like a new piece of clothing. I continue to follow the philosophy from the very beginning,” Park says of the title Icheon bestowed on him in 2016. “It is not to simply continue traditions but to create works that reflect the modern times. I want to keep trying new things, building [on traditions] to create pieces that are unique to our time.”

“사람한테는 일생에 3번의 기회가 온대요. 제게 도자기가 그 중 하나입니다.” 대학에 진학하려던 평범한 청년이 일본으로 건너가 조선 도자 기의 혼을 안고 한국으로 돌아오기까지, 만 40년의 이규탁 명 장의 도자기 인생은 참 흥미롭다. 지난 1978년, 우연히 본 신 문기사가 그의 인생을 송두리째 바꿔놓았다. 임진왜란 때 일본 으로 끌려간 조선 팔산(八山)의 11대 후손인 다카토리 세이잔 이 고국인 대한민국의 젊은 도공에게 회령도자 기술을 전수하 고 싶다는 것이었다. 반신반의하며 지원한 국비 도자 장학생

“They say everyone gets three chances in life. For me, pottery was one of them,” says Master Lee Kyu-tak.

Lee had initially intended to study industrial design in college, but a chance encounter with a 1978 newspaper article changed the course of his life, which would take him to Japan and spark a career that is now 40 years long and counting.

The article was about Takatori Seizan, the 11th generation descendant of a potter of Joseon who was taken to Japan during the 1592 Japanese Invasion.

She was looking for young Korean potters to train.

공모에 덜컥 붙게 됐고, 그렇게 일본으로 건너가 조선의 도자 기를 배우게 됐다. “일본에서 제 스승이 그러시더군요. ‘내가 도자기를 그만하면 우리 조선 도공 가문의 맥이 여기서 끊기겠 구나. 선조들은 결국 고국으로 돌아가지 못했지만 그 혼이나마 돌려보내 줘야겠다’ 그런 맘으로 결심하신 일이라고.” 낯선 이국땅에서 어려운 점도 많았고, 한국에 돌아와서도 일본 에서 배웠다는 이유로 배척을 당하기도 했다. 이를 극복하고자 이천에서 바닥부터 다시 도자기를 배우며 힘든 시간을 보냈다. 그럼에도 이 명장이 끝내 포기할 수 없었던 이유는 그러한 스 승의 뜻 때문이었다. “일본으로 끌려갔던 선조들의 혼을 돌려 보내고자 했던 스승의 마음을 저버릴 수가 없었어요. 그곳에서 배웠던 것들을 한국에 알리고 후손들에게 남겨야 한다는 사명 감 같은 게 있었어요. 그런 의무감 때문에 지금도 소홀히 할 수 가 없는 것 같아요.” 그래서일까, 이 명장의 주 분야는 분청이지만 회령에 대한 애 정이 깊다. “회령은 조선시대 때 일본으로 넘어간 건데, 오히 려 우리나라 사람들은 이걸 일본의 것이라고 생각해요. 회령이 란 뜻이 함경북도 회령에서 주로 만들었다고 해서 붙여진 이름

Lee recounted her thoughts, saying, “In my teacher’s words, she began the program when she felt ‘If I don’t do pottery, my family will end with me. My ancestors never returned home, but I should at least return their spirits.” Lee promptly applied and was accepted for a state-funded study program, and he set out to Japan to learn the art of pottery.

Learning in a foreign land had its difficulties, and even when he returned to Korea he was often rejected for having been trained in Japan. Coming to Icheon, he was forced to start from the beginning. It was his teacher’s words that kept him going through the years.

“I could not abandon my teacher’s wishes to return her ancestors spirits to their homeland. I felt a duty to pass on what I learned,” he said, adding that that sense of duty continues to drive him.

It may be his sense of duty that drives his continued practice of the Hoeryeong technique alongside his own personal focus on Buncheon.

“The Hoeryeong technique was passed onto Japan during the Joseon period,” Park notes, “But people often think it is a Japanese technique. The term Hoeryeong comes from the fact that the technique was mostly used in Hoeryeong, North Hamgyeong Province. I felt

이에요. 저라도 이걸 알려야겠다는 생각이 들어서 그런 사명감 때문에 분청을 하면서도 쉽게 놓지 못하고 있어요.” 회령이 전통을 지키고자 하는 의지의 발로라면, 분청은 그가 작품을 통해 표현하고 싶은 것들을 펼치는 장이다. “제가 생 각하는 분청의 소박함은 투박하고 거친 소박함이 아니라 들꽃 처럼 예쁘고 어린아이처럼 해맑고 정제된 소박함이에요. 그런 걸 표현하고 싶은 제 맘을 분청으로 표현하는 거죠. 나를 표현 하는 가장 좋은 작품이 청자나 백자보다는 분청이라고 생각했 던 점도 이 부분이에요. 그런 소박함을 작품에 담고 싶었어요.” 그렇게 도자기의 세계로 들어온 지 올해로 41년이 됐다. 그리 고 2017년, ‘이천 도자기명장’이 됐다. “이천 도자기명장은 곧 한국문화 홍보 대사라는 생각을 합니다. 우리나라 도자기가 세 계시장으로 나가는 데 있어서 모범이 되고 앞장서 알려야 된다 는 책임을 느껴요. 도자기의 고향이 대한민국이라는 것, 그리 고 그 아름다움이 세계로 통한다는 걸 보여주고 싶어요. 그러 기 위해서는 선조들의 것을 배우고 전통을 지키는 것도 중요하 지만 오늘에 맞게 변화시키는 작업도 소홀히 해서는 안 된다 고 생각해요. 명장은 감투가 아니라 그런 역할을 하라는 책임 을 부여한 것이라고 생각해요.”

I should make this more widely known, so I couldn’t let the technique go even though I focused on Buncheong.” While his duty to tradition drives his work in Hoeryeong, it is his personal passion that makes Buncheong his canvas for self-expression.

“To me, Buncheong’s simplicity is one that comes from roughness and bluntness, but the refined simplicity of an innocent child and that of a beautiful wild flower,” Lee explains. “I use Buncheong to express such ideas.

That is why I feel that Buncheong is the best medium for expressing myself, even more than celadon or white porcelain. I want to instill such simplicity in my work.”

Lee was finally named a master in 2017. Speaking of his title, Lee again speaks of a sense of calling, saying, “I feel that a master should serve as an ambassador of Icheon’s ceramics, and I feel a duty to set the example, and lead the way for Korean ceramics to spread across the world. I want to show the world that Korea is the home of pottery, and that the beauty [of Korean pottery] rings true anywhere.”

“To do this, it is important to learn from our ancestors and keep traditional alive, but it is just as important to adapt to the modern time. I think the title of a master bestows the duty to serve such roles.”

“흙에서 흙으로. 흙에서 작품이 만들어진다는 게 참 신기했어 요. 어떻게 보면 무에서 유를 만드는 거랄까요. 알수록 궁금하 고 신기했어요. 계속 배워보고 싶고. 그렇게 이곳에 발을 들 인 거죠.” 이연휴 명장은 그렇게 48년을 줄곧 도자기를 빚었 다. 공방 이름인 ‘여천(如泉)’, 흐르는 물처럼 한결같았던 세 월이었다. 도자기를 처음 배운 건 고향 집 옆에 우연히 들어선 도자기 작 업장에서였다. 더 본격적으로 배우고 싶다는 생각에 그의 나이 스무 살, 이천으로 올라와 해강(海剛) 유근형 선생 슬하에 들어

“From clay to clay. I was drawn by the fact that clay could give birth to art,” says Master Lee Yeon-hyoo, reflecting on how he started working with clay nearly five decades ago. “It could be considered as creating something from nothing. The more I learned, the more mysterious it seemed. I wanted to learn more.

That’s how I set foot on this path.”

He learned the craft at a workshop that was set up near his home, and he came to Icheon to further his training at age 20. Here, he went under the tutelage of Haegang Yoo Geun-hyung. For Lee, learning has

갔다. “배워도 배워도 끝이 없더라고요. 어느 정도 성취를 했다 고 생각했는데 또 앞으로 더 나아가야 할 것들이 보이니까. 세 월 가는 줄도 몰랐던 것 같아요. 오늘도 유약 실험을 하고 있었 어요. 맨 처음 시작할 때도 유약을 만드는 작업을 했었는데, 50 년이 다 된 지금도 여전히 실험의 연속이에요.” 아직도 마음에 드는 작품이 없다고 말하는 이 명장. “박물관에 가서 옛 선조들의 작품을 보고 있으면 천재가 아닐까 하는 생각 이 들어요. 나는 언제 저렇게 만들까, 내가 재주가 없는 건 아닐 까 하는 생각도 해요. 뭘 만들어도 만족이 없는 것 같아요.” 겸 손이란 말로도 형용할 수 없었다. 도자기에 대한 애정과 올곧 은 심성이 한껏 배어날 뿐이었다. 한결같이 흐르던 강은, 그사 이 더 깊이 흐르고 있었다. 오랜 세월의 연속은 속절없이 흘러갔지만 ‘혼’만은 깊게 서렸 다. “작품을 만드는 과정에서 사람의 혼이 안 들어갈 수가 없어 요. 항상 모든 작업을 할 때 제 혼을 담는다는 생각으로 작업을 합니다. 재주만 부릴 게 아니라 혼을 담아야 한다는 게 제 철학 이에요. 하나의 도자기를 빚더라도 혼을 담는 것, 그게 가장 중 요하다고 생각해요.” 끝없는 실험과 만족을 모르는 노력의 결 과였을까, 이 명장은 2004년에 명장으로 선정됐다. 명장이 된

always been central to his art.

“There was no end to things to learn. When I thought I made progress, then more things I could learn appeared. I think I just lost track of time,” Lee says, speaking of the continued space for improvement in his craft. “Just now I was testing glazes. I began with making glazes, and nearly 50 years on, testing still goes on.”

Lee is humble, never satisfied with his work despite decades of devotion to it. He looks up to those who came before him, saying, “When I look at our ancestors’ works in museums I wonder if they were geniuses. I wonder when I will be able to match their skills and question whether I have any talent.”

Lee’s 48 years as a ceramicist have flowed as a river, bringing to mind the name of his workshop “Yeocheon” – Chinese characters meaning ‘to be like’ and ‘stream’. As they flowed on, he poured his soul into his work. He explains it’s unavoidable, even mandatory. “You cannot but put your soul into your creations.

I put my soul into every project. My philosophy is that you have to put your soul into it. I think this is the most important element, to put your soul into every piece.”

뒤로는 하나의 시대적 사명을 부여받았다는 생각이 들었다. “책임감이 들었어요. 우리가 과거 시대의 청자, 백자, 분청을 조상들에게 물려받았듯이 우리가 후손들에게 남겨 줄 수 있는 이 시대의 도자기는 무엇일까 생각했어요. 우리처럼 과거의 것 을 언제까지 답습할 수 없잖아요. 이 시대의 도자기를 또 후손 들에게 남겨줄 수 있다면 좋겠다는 생각이 들었어요.” 그렇게 해서 만들어 낸 게 ‘황(黃)자’ 였다. 여러 번의 유약 실 험 끝에 황색을 띠는 도자기를 만들어 냈고, 기존의 청자나 백 자와는 다른 빛깔을 입혔다. “청자는 조금 차가운데, 황자는 따 뜻한 느낌이 들어요. 아직 낯설어 하는 사람들도 있지만 좋아 해 주는 분들도 있어요. 계속 연구를 해서 후손들에게 백자나 청자처럼 이 시대에 맞는 도자기를 물려주고 싶어요. 그게 제 게 앞으로 남겨진 역할인 것 같아요.” “그냥 주어진 대로, 힘닿는 대로 작업을 하는 수밖에 없어요. 실패해도 원인을 알 수 없고 잘돼도 마찬가지예요. 여긴 완벽 한 끝이 있는 게 아니라 더 나은 작품을 만들기 위한 과정만 있 을 뿐이에요.” 반세기를 이어온 백발 도자기 노장의 결심은 세 계 도자기 종주국으로써 한국, 이천의 나아갈 길을 다시금 되 짚어보게 한다.

2004, he felt he had also been given a duty and responsibility to create something to be inherited by the future. “White porcelain and celadon are legacies of the past, and I wondered what we could pass on from today’s pottery,” he notes, remarking that the future of his art and culture would also need to be sustained.

“We can’t just keep revisiting the past,” he continues, saying, “I wanted to create something that could be handed down through the generations.”

In Lee’s mind, it is “yellow porcelain” that will ensure this legacy. This is his own creation, and the result of continued learning and experimentation. “Celadon has a cold feel,” Lee says, “But yellow porcelain emanates a sense of warmth. I hope to keep researching to create something of our times, like celadon and white porcelain of the past. I think that is the task left to me.”

Learning and experimentation do not always end in success, but going through those actions remain central to his work. As Lee says, “The only thing I can do is try. Reasons for failure, just like reasons for success, are not clear. Here (in the field of pottery), there is no perfect end, but only the process of trying to improve.”
