The history of Icheon’s ceramics goes back a thousand years, and the city was home to numerous workshops supplying to the royal palaces throughout history.

Icheon continues in this tradition, using its rich resources and

infrastructure to become one of Asia’s most recognizable city for ceramics.

The workshops in Icheon today are fueled by the creativity of

modern ceramicists and master craftsmen who have dedicated their lives to protecting and improving Korea’s traditional ceramics culture.

Icheon has long endeavored to improve and expand the hori-

zons of Korean ceramics, and will continue to support artists, and Korea’s ceramics industry to expand across the globe.

서문

이천에는 청자와 백자, 분청 등 한국 고유의 도자 기법을 이용하여 전통과 현대를 아우르는 도자기 제작 공방 400여곳이 있습니다. 각각의 공방이 가진 풍부하고 다양한 도자예술 컨텐츠를 기반으로 지속적인 해외홍보와 판로개척 사업을 추진하여 세계 곳곳에 우리 고유의 도자예술을 알리는데 앞장서고 있습니다. 최근 전 세계에 불고 있는 공예 붐과 도자기에 대한 관심이 이천의 헤리티지 정신과 핸드메 이드 도자기의 장점 그리고 우수한 품질과 맞물려 전세계 바이어들의 주목을 받고 있습니다. 이천시는 이러한 문화흐름과 관심에 부흥하고자 국내외 라이프스타일에 대한 연구를 바탕으로 식문화 트렌드에 맞는 도자 식기 개발 프로젝트를 진행하고 있습니다. 이천에서 활발히 활동중인 10명의 도예인들과 대한민국 1세대 푸드스타일리스트이자 테이블웨어 컨설턴트인 노영희씨가 만나 요리와 그릇의 조화에 대해 고민하고, 일상생활 에 좀 더 가까이 다가가는 쓰임 좋은 핸드메이드 도자식기를 만들고 있습니다. 누구나 쓰지만 모두가 알지는 못했던 이천도자기의 우수성을 널리 알리는 것, 이것이 이천도자기의 철학이자 목표입니다.

Preface

There are over 400 workshops in Icheon that produce modern and traditional ceramics using diverse methods such as Buncheong, celadon and white porcelain techniques.

Using the diverse cultural contents provided by the workshops, Icheon City government has continuously worked to open new channels for overseas sales, to support the industry and to promote the country’s unique ceramic traditions.

As crafts gain attention across the world, Icheon’s ceramic heritage and the outstanding quality of Icheon’s products have captivated buyers across the world.

In line with such trends, Icheon city government conducted a research and development project that seeks to develop tableware suited to today’s lifestyles, both in Korea and abroad.

The project brought together food stylist Roh Young-hee with 10 leading ceramicists working in Icheon to discuss the relationship between foods and tableware, resulting in handmade ceramics that are easier to use.

Making the qualities of Icheon ceramics known, and enabling everyone to use Icheon ceramics, that is the goal we are striving for.

편집장의 말

한국 도자기의 본고장 이천. 올해에도 세계 최대 홈리빙 박람회인 메종오브제 파리 (MAISON&OBJET PARIS)에서 반가운 이천 도자기를 볼 수 있게 됐습니다. 크게 놀라 운 일은 아닙니다. 보다 흥미로운 점은 이천시가 이번 박람회 참가를 위해 선발된 이천시 소속 10명의 도예가에 게 푸드스타일리스트 노영희 스튜디오 푸디 대표의 컨설팅을 제공했다는 점입니다. 한국과 다른 프랑스 식문화에 대한 도예가들의 이해를 높이고 이를 작품 디자인에 적용해 해 외 시장을 공략하겠다는 것입니다. 한국 도자기의 세계화를 위한 이천시의 의지가 돋보입니다. 크라프츠가 직접 만나본 박람회 참가 작가들 사이에서도 세계화에 대한 결연한 의지를 느낄 수 있었습니다. 작가들은 8월 초 진행된 인터뷰 기간 동안 동서양 식문화와 테이블 디스플레이에 대한 코칭을 바탕으로 새로운 디자인 개발 연구에 한창이었습니다. 익숙한 디자인에서 탈피해 새로운 미감을 반영하기 위해 모두 주말도 잊은 채 구슬땀을 흘리고 있었습니다. 우리나라 전통 도자 성형 기법과 제작 형식을 기반으로 현재의 감성을 더하는 도전은 어쩌 면 이 시대를 살아가는 모든 아티스트들에게 주어진 사명일지도 모릅니다. 전승 도자에 머물지 않는 작가들의 이 같은 도전이야 말로 또 다른 새로운 전통을 만들어 낼 수 있는 힘이 될 것입니다.

Editor’s Note

Icheon is the home of Korea’s ceramic arts, and Icheon’s best offerings will again be displayed at MAISON&OBJET PARIS, the world’s largest interior design trade fair. This in itself is no surprise.

What makes this year special for Icheon stand out is that the 10 ceramicists selected for the show received consultations from food stylist Roh Young-hee.

Roh’s involvement is an attempt to help the artists better understand French culinary culture, and testament to Icheon government’s drive to expand Korean ceramics’ presence on the world stage.

The artists KRAFTS met also showed a strong will to take their arts to the global level.

When KRAFTS met them in early August, the artists were busy reinventing their designs based on the coaching they received on the culinary cultures of the East and the West, and differences in table displays. The artists were working day and night to break away from their norms.

Perhaps the task of combining Korea’s traditional methods with modern sensibilities is the destiny of all artists.

The artists’ efforts to create something new will be the start of new traditions.

금속 상감기(器), 김경수 작가 금속을 머금은 흙이 가마 속에 들어가 한 몸이 되어 나왔을 때, 도자기의 절제된 선과 반짝이는 금속 장식이 오묘한 조화를 뽐낸 다. 기법은 한국 고려청자에 사용된 전통기법인 ‘상감’. 작가의 유 쾌한 상상력이 더해져 흙을 파낸 곳에 금속이 자리를 채운다. 전 세계 하나뿐인 ‘금속상감라인’을 빚는 작가, 공방 ‘차림’의 김경 수 작가를 만났다. 김 작가가 처음 금속을 쓴 건 재료를 섞어 쓰는 ‘믹스 미디어(Mix Media)’가 유행했던 10년 전, 도자기에 접목시킬 재료를 고민하 다 우연히 액세서리를 만드는 작업을 보게 됐다. 가마 속에서도 불 에 녹지 않는 금속이 있다는 걸 그때 알았다. 그렇게 ‘우연’은 ‘운 명’이 됐다. “한국 도자기의 전통 기법인 상감 기법은 흙을 파내고 그 위에 다른 색의 흙을 채워 넣는 방식인데 흙물 대신 금속을 상 감해 봤어요. 가마에 들어가면 흙이 수축하면서 그 금속을 물어요.

Metal sanggam wares, Kim Kyung-su Shiny metal decorations, and the lines of the pottery achieve a mysterious harmony when the two are bound together in the kiln. The technique used is ‘sanggam,’ used to produce Goryeo celadon wares, and metal decorations fill where the clay has been dug out by the artist. These unique metal sanggam pieces are the creations of artist Kim Kyung-su of the workshop Charim.

The idea of using metal decorations came to Kim about 10 years ago when “mix media,” the technique of using two different materials, was in fashion. He was contemplating new materials to use in his works, when he happened to see the process of accessories being made.

It was then that he became aware of metals that can withstand the heat of the kiln. This chance encounter has become his destiny. “The sanggam technique is

불에 그을려 나온 금속 부분을 연마하면 특유의 빛깔이 나오는 게 매력적으로 다가왔어요. 그 뒤로 전통목가구의 장석을 주재료로 금속과 흙을 접목시키기 시작했어요” 금속상감라인의 포인트는 다양한 금속 장식도 있지만 높은 굽을 가 진 제기 형태의 그릇이 특징이다. “조형적으로 기념비적인 느낌도 있고 그릇 하나만 놓여있어도 당당한 느낌이 들어서 좋아요. 제가 단신이다 보니 높은 굽에 끌리는 게 아닌가 싶기도 해요(웃음). 또, 제가 주로 사용하는 금속으로 장식하기 좋은 여백, 여지가 있 어서 여러모로 좋은 것 같아요.” 높은 굽은 그에게 또 다른 도화지 가 된 셈이다. 쉽게 얻어진 결과물은 아니었다. 굽 라인을 위해 건축적인 요소를 습득하기 시작했다. “겉으로 보이는 장식보다 구조적인 내실을 키워야겠다는 생각이 들었어요. 제 작품을 보 면 콘크리트 철물구조물처럼 구조를 탄탄히 해주는 금속이 심어 져 있어요. 특히, 기둥으로 만들어진 조형물에서 무게중심이나 구조적인 측면에서 영감을 많이 얻었어요.” 화려한 금속 라인에 마음을 빼앗긴 것도 잠시, 같은 작가의 것이 맞는지 싶은 단아한 백자 라인이 눈길을 사로 잡았다. 금속 라인은 본인의 트레이드 마크지만, 최근엔 백자에도 욕심을 내고 있다고 했다. “대학 시절 배웠던 교수님이 백자를 정말 아름답게 만들었던 분이었어요. 그 영향을 받아서 백자에 빠졌어요. 백자는 단단해서 식기로서 가장 적합한 흙이면서도 선에서 오는 넉넉함과 사람을 편안하게 해주는 힘이 있어요. 금속라인이 제 주요 분야지만 백자 로도 인정받고 싶어요.” 어떻게 보면 반대 급부에 있는 금속 라인 과 백자 라인 작업은 김 작가에게 ‘시너지’로 작용한다. “금속을 통 해 화려하고 극대화된 디자인을 표현한다면, 백자는 휴식 같은 느 낌이에요. 꾸미고 싶은 욕구가 솟아날 땐 장식을 쓰고, 또 편안함 을 느끼고 기본으로 돌아가고 싶을 땐 백자를 빚어요. 둘 다 저 자 신의 표현이자, 서로 긍정적인 해방구가 되는 거 같아요.” 이번 메 종오브제에도 백자라인과 금속상감라인 모두를 들고 갈 예정이다. 김 작가는 이번 이천시의 메종오브제 참가자 중 가장 젊은 작가이 기도 하다. 하지만 고등학교 시절부터 물레 앞에 앉은 걸 감안하면 20년 가까이 도자기를 빚었다. 적지 않은 시간이다. 전반전을 반 이상 달려왔지만 ‘나를 표현할 수 있는 것이 무엇일까’에 대한 고민은 아직도 현재 진행형이다. “나를 표현할 수 있는, 나만이 가질 수 있는 게 뭘까를 찾는 게 지금의, 또 앞으로의 과제예요. 일단은 저를 위한 작품을 만들고 있어요. 내 맘에 들고 내 눈에 예뻐야 사람들에게도 비로소 보여 줄 수 있는 거잖아요.”

taking off clay, and using different colored clay to fill the area, but I replaced clay with metal,” he said. “When fired in the kiln, the clay contracts and takes hold of the metal. Polishing the metal afterwards creates characteristic colors, and that captivated me. I have since been using clay with metals, using feldspar used in traditional furniture, as my main ingredient.”

In addition to metal decorations, the metal sanggam line products have a characteristically raised form.

“It’s almost monumental in form, and even a single piece by itself stands proud. Perhaps I am drawn to the high platform because I am short. Also (the platforms act) as the margin, room, for me to decorate with metals,” Kim said. However, incorporating the raised platform to his creations was not an easy process. “I felt I should improve the structural strength. My works have imbedded metal pieces, like metal reinforcements in concrete structures. I drew a lot of inspiration from artworks containing columns,” he said.

Kim’s trademark is the metal sanggam line, but he has also begun expanding into white porcelain. “A professor of mine in college was known for making beautiful white porcelain pieces. Due to the influence, I was captivated by the white porcelain,” he said. “The white porcelain is strong, so it’s perfect for tableware, but also it has the ability to calm the mind. Metal line is my main field, but I also want to be known for my white porcelain pieces.”

Although the metal sanggam pieces and white porcelain pieces are on the opposite ends of the spectrum, they create a synergy effect for Kim. “If metals are used for elaborate and amplified designs, the white porcelain is like a rest. When I have an urge to be decorative I use metal, when I want to return to basics, I make white porcelain pieces,” he said. “They are both expressing of myself, and positive release for each other.” Kim plans to take both his metal- and white porcelain-line pieces to MAISON&OBJET. Kim is the youngest of Korean artists taking part in the event, but he still has nearly 20 years of experience built up since high school. Despite such a long experience, Kim says that the search for ways to express himself is still ongoing.

“How to express myself, acquiring something uniquely my own that is my task now, and in the future. My work is for myself. It has to appear beautiful to my eyes, before I can show it to others.”

‘늦깎이’ 그릇장이, 김남희 작가 “작품 마다 새겨진 ‘와이(y)’는 흐를 유(流)에 물결 랑(浪), 유랑의 앞글자에서 따왔어요. 흐르는 물결처럼 자유롭게 살고 싶단 뜻인 데, 그러한 마음이 작업에도 스며들기를 바라는 마음에 작업이 끝나고 나면 새겨요. 제 작품 철학도 이와 같아요. 은근히 바라 보며 즐길 수 있는 그릇을 만들고 있습니다.” 김남희 작가는 경기도 이천에서는 ‘늦깎이’로 통한다. 평범한 회사 원이었던 어느 날 문득 이대로 살고 싶지 않다는 생각에 회사를 그만두고 미술 학원을 등록했다. 남들은 새로운 길을 찾기 너무 늦었다고 생각했던 서른 살, 디자인 아카데미에 들어갔다. 하지 만 그 곳에서도 방황은 끝나지 않았다. 컴퓨터로 하는 디자인 작업 이 적성에 맞지 않았던 것. 그러다 인생을 뒤바꿔 놓은 운명이 찾 아왔다. 서울의 한 전시장에서 열린 재독(在獨) 작가 이영재의 도

Late bloomer, Kim Nam-hee The letter “Y” that marks all of Kim Nam-hee’s works is more than a simple signature. “(Y is) the first letter of yu (流 – Chinese character meaning to flow) and rang (浪 – Chinese character for wave) which is my nickname. (Yu rang) signifies the wish to live free, like flowing water. I engrave the letter when a piece is finished in the hopes of capturing that philosophy in my work,” Kim said. “This is also my artistic philosophy.

I want to make pieces that can be appreciated simply by viewing them.”

Kim is known as the late bloomer in Icheon. Feeling dissatisfied with the path her office job was taking her, she quit her job and enrolled at an arts academy. At the age of 30, she began studying at a design academy, but

자전이었다. “바닥에 펼쳐진 사발들을 보고 생애 처음으로 온몸에 털이 다 곤두서는 듯한 경험을 했어요. 방사형으로 뻗은 곡선 같 은 직선의 흐름, 흰빛과 푸른빛 사이의 색을 보면서 ‘아름다움이 란 바로 이런 것이다’라는 확신을 갖게 됐어요.” 그 길로 독일 행 티켓을 끊어 이영재 작가의 공방으로 들어갔다. 짧은 시간이었지 만 이 작가의 공방에서 물레를 차면서 ‘이 길이 내 길’이란 걸 깨 달았다. 뒤늦게 시작한 물레 작업, 다시 대학에 들어갔고 그릇을 만들기 시작했다. “도자기의 따뜻함이 좋았어요. 도자기에는 수 작업 과정에서 느껴 지는 작가의 손길, 그 감성이 오롯이 들어가 있어요. 기본적으로 흙이라는 물성이 따뜻하기 때문인지도 모르겠어요”. 그렇게 15년이란 세월이 흘렀다. 시작은 늦었지만 작품은 유행 을 앞서갔다. 김 작가의 대표적인 작품은 애프터눈 티(Afternoon Tea) 트레이 세트 라인이다. 애프터눈 티는 19세기 영국 귀족사회 에서 시작된 차문화로, 점점 서구화되고 있는 한국의 식(食) 문화 에서 2단, 3단으로 이뤄진 식기 라인은 해외뿐 아니라 국내에서도 주목을 받고 있다. “색감과 여백이 특징이에요. 수평적인 일반적 인 접시와는 다르게 가장자리를 수직으로 세워 닫혀진 공간을 만 들었는데 가장 자리는 흙의 고유한 흰색을 보여주고 가운데는 큰 원으로 은은한 저 채도의 색을 써서 서로 부딪히지 않고 공간적인 여백을 느끼도록 했어요.” 최근 만들고 있는 작품이자 이번 메종오브제에 출품하는 아뜰리 에 라인은 그늘과 그림자를 다룬 책에서 영감을 받았다. “다니자키 준이치로의 산문집 ‘그늘에 대하여(음예예찬)’라는 책을 읽고 그림 자를 주제로 작업을 시작했어요. 흰색의 그릇이 분명하고 직접적 이라면 검은 톤의 그릇은 간접적이면서 은유적이에요. 담기는 음 식과 비어질 공간을 생각하면서 최대한 여백을 살릴 수 있게 작업 했어요.” 물레로 얇게 성형한 뒤 금속질감의 어두운 톤의 유약을 입혀 깊은 공간감을 만들어 냈다. 그렇게 그릇에 그림자를 담았다. 김 작가가 그릇을 빚으며 느끼는 감정도 그늘, 혹은 그림자와 같 다. “’무엇을 표현할 것인가’에 대한 고민은 그늘과 같은 평온함 이자 그림자와 같은 쓸쓸함이에요. 우리 인생도 같은 거 같아요. 한 켠에 스며드는 빛이 있는 공간에서 어두운 찻잔에 담긴 차를 음 미하고 접시에 담긴 한 조각의 다과를 보면서 마음에 울렁거리는 동요를 느낄 수 있다면 그것으로 족한 거 같아요. 앞으로도 그런 그늘 같은, 또 그림자 같은 작품을 만들고 싶어요.”

her wanderings did not stop there, finding design work using computer software unsuited to her character.

And one day, she found her destiny at the exhibition of ceramicist Lee Young-jae.

“When I saw the bowl laid out on the ground, I was covered in goose bumps. Looking at the straight lines that radiated out like curves, and the colors that hovered between white and blue; I felt a certainty that this is what beauty is,” she said. Straight away, she purchased a ticket to Germany to work at Lee Young-jae’s workshop.

It was but a short period of time, but she says that she became certain that she found her calling. She then went back to school, and began her life as a ceramicist.

“I was drawn to the warmth of ceramics. They embody the artist’s touch, and the emotions. Perhaps this is part of the inherent qualities of the clay,” she said.

She may have started later than most, but she has stayed ahead of the trends. One of her best known works are the afternoon tea tray sets. The two- and three-tier pieces are gaining popularity in Korea as well as on the international market. “The margins, and the colors are what make them stand out. While plates are mostly horizontal, the plates were given vertical edges to create an enclosed space,” she said. “The edges are white, while the center is decorated with a large circle of subdued colors to create a sense of spatial margin without the two clashing.”

The Artelier line, her latest project that she will present at this year’s MAISON&OBJET, was inspired by Junichiro Tanizaki’s book “In Praise of Shadows.” “After reading the essays, I began working with the theme of shadows.

If white tableware are direct and clear, black is indirect and metaphorical. I tried to emphasize the margins by picturing the food that will be contained in the plates, and the space left empty,” she said. She captured shadows in her creations by using dark glazes to create a sense of space in shallow plates. “The question of ‘what to express’ in my work is similar to the calmness of shade, and at the same time similar to the bitterness of shadows. I think life is the same,” she said.

“If one can be moved while appreciating tea held in a dark tea cup, and look at a piece of dessert, I think that is enough. I want to continue making pieces that are like the shades, and the shadows.”

가장 한국적인 것, 장훈성 작가 빛살무늬 격자가 한 눈에 들어오는 육각, 사각, 원형의 정갈한 접 시. 어딘지 모르게 이국적이면서도 한국적인 정서가 눈길을 사 로 잡는다. ‘가장 한국적인 게 뭘까’ 일본 유학을 다녀오면서 했 던 고민이다. 궁궐과 민속 박물관을 돌아다니면서 한참을 찾아 헤맸다. “그래서 찾은 게 문양이었어요. 지금 작품의 빗살무늬와 ‘만(萬)’자였죠.” 한국에서 도예를 공부한 뒤 일본으로 건너가 그 나라의 도예를 배웠다. 독특한 이력 덕분일까. 그만큼 다양한 작 품 군을 갖고 있는 작가, ‘장훈성 공방’의 장훈성 작가를 만났다. 장 작가의 작품은 크게 3가지로 분류된다. 분청과 회령, 색자 라 인이 그것이다. 대표적인 것이 회령과 색자로 회령은 함경북도 회령 지방에서 볏짚을 태운 재를 이용한 유약을 일컫는다. 기존에

The essence of “Korean-ness,” Jang Hun-seong Hexagonal, rectangular and circular plates adorned with striking crisscrossing comb-patterns. Their foreign, yet Korean appearance captivates the eye. Jang has pondered the question ‘what is the most Korean thing?’ since he went to study in Japan. He searched far and wide, poring over the question in palaces and folk museums.

“I found my answer in patterns. The comb patterns and the character ‘man (萬),’” he said. He studied pottery in Korea, and went to Japan to study Japanese pottery.

Perhaps this unusual training is the source of his diverse range of creations that adorn his studio, where KRAFTS met him for the interview.

Jang’s creations can be divided into three categories; Buncheong, Hoeryong and colored pottery. His main

발려있던 유약 위에 바르면 유약이 자연스럽고 부드럽게 흘러내리 는 효과를 볼 수 있다. 마치 마블링 같은 무늬가 만들어지는 비결 이다. 장 작가는 이를 위해 매년 논을 찾아 볏짚을 태워 재를 얻는 작업을 손수 한다고 한다. 유약을 얻는 데도 손이 많이 갈뿐 아니 라 무늬를 내는 작업에서도 버려지는 그릇이 많다고 했다. “그래도 쉽게 얻을 수 없는 세상에서 단 하나의 무늬가 나오는 게 매력이에 요. 이 작업이 가장 애착이 가는 이유죠.” 회령라인과 함께 이번 메종오브제에 출품되는 색자라인은 석고 틀을 이용한 빛살무늬, ‘만’ 무늬에 청록, 노랑 등 다양한 유약으로 빛을 냈다. “특히 ‘만’은 다산을 기원하는 뜻을 담고 있는데 한국적인 글 자라는 생각에 무늬로 넣게 됐어요.” 하지만, 이번 메종오브제에 출품하는데 우여곡절도 있었다. 포크와 나이프를 사용하는 문화권 에서는 양각 무늬의 그릇이 적절치 않다는 노영희 푸드스타일리스 트의 조언 때문이다. “그래서 양각을 음각으로 바꿔보려는 노력을 했어요. 무늬를 살리면서도 실용성도 높이는 거죠.” ‘가장 한국적인 것’을 찾으려 했던 장 작가에게 한국 도자기만의 매력을 물었다. “기술적인 기교나 멋을 부리기보다는 흙 자체의 매력만 살린 단순함인 것 같아요. 중국이나 일본 분청이 지나치게 기술적인 걸 부린 경우가 많은데 달항아리 같은 걸 보면 너무 어 렵게 생각하지 않고 단순하면서도 따뜻한, 뭔가 흙의 매력이 그대 로 묻어나는 느낌을 줘요. 그런 게 한국 도자기의 매력 아닐까요?” 장 작가는 대부분 차 도구를 만들어 왔다. 이번 기회를 통해 식기 로 지평을 넓히겠다는 포부도 함께 밝혔다. “음식이 점점 2D에서 3D, 4D로 옮겨가면서 식기도 이에 따라 변화해 나가야 된다고 생각 해요. 그동안 차(茶) 도구에 국한돼 있던 제 작품라인을 식기 류로 넓히는데 이번 무대가 큰 역할을 하고 있다고 생각해요. 이번 메 종오브제 준비를 통해서 저 자신도 많이 배울 수 있는 기회였어요. 노 선생님에게 받은 조언도 굉장히 유익했고, 프랑스에 가서 제 작품 이 얼마나 팔리냐보다, 이번 기회로 제 작품은 물론 한국 도자기가 보 다 영역을 넓힐 수 있는 기회가 될 거라고 생각합니다.”

works are in colored pottery, and Hoeryong, which refers to the use of glaze made using ash produced from burning rice straw that was developed in Heoryong, North Hamgyeong Province. The Hoeryong glaze is applied on top of already glazed pieces, causing the second layer of glaze to naturally flow down the sides, creating a marbling-like effect. Each year, Jang personally collects rice straw ash and personally undertakes the painstaking process of producing the glaze. Jang’s creative process also results in numerous pieces being discarded. “Still, the result is a pattern like no other in the world, this is the allure. This is why I am the most attached to this step,” Jang said.

The color-pottery line, which will be displayed at MAISON&OBJET exhibition alongside the Hoeryong line, are decorated with comb-patterns created using gypsum cast and the ‘man (萬)’ pattern and finished with diverse range of colored glazes. “The character ‘man (萬)’ embodies a wish for having many children, and I felt that it was a very Korean character,” Jang said. In preparing for MAISON&OBJET, Jang ran into an unexpected challenge after food stylist Roh Young-hee suggested that embossed patterns may not be suitable for western culinary culture that uses knife and fork. “So, I tried to replace embossed patterns with engraved patterns. Keeping the patterns while adding practicality,” Jang said.

Jang, who has searched for the “most Korean characteristic,” has developed his own idea about the allure of Korean pottery. “I think it’s not about elaborate techniques, but the simplicity that highlights the characteristics of the clay itself. Chinese or Japanese Buncheong often involve overly elaborate techniques, but for example the moon jar is simple, yet have a warmth and displays the appeal of the clay. I think that is the appeal of Korean pottery.” Jang, who has mostly created tea utensils, hopes to expand this portfolio to include food-related items. “As food evolves, I think crockery should change too. I think this event has a big part in my expanding my portfolio to crockery, and preparing for MAISON&OBJET was a real learning experience. Roh’s advice was invaluable. For me, it is not how popular my works prove to be in France, but an opportunity for myself and Korean pottery to take on wider horizons.”

청(靑)으로 물들다, 심지수 작가 코발트 블루를 과감히 입고 있는 위풍당당한 찻주전자와 찻잔. 지금은 블루 색상의 그릇을 많이 찾아볼 수 있지만 공방 ‘심스’의 심 지수 작가가 이곳 이천에 내려왔을 때만 해도 흔하지 않았다. 강렬 한 색깔이기에 전면에 바르기에는 그만큼 소화하기 힘든 색이기 도 했다. 과거엔 황실에서만 쓰였을 정도로 귀했던 코발트 블루 유약, 지금은 가장 손쉽게 구할 수 있는 재료가 됐다. “파란색을 특별히 좋아했다기 보다 청아 백자를 다르게 본거에요. 청아 백자를 보고 한국적 색깔을 넣되 모던한 느낌으로 재해석하 고 싶었다고 할까요? 제가 쓰는 블루에는 블랙이 들어가 있어요. 과거에는 청아가 비싸서 그림에만 살짝 쓰였는데, 전 어떻게 보면 운 이 좋은 거죠. (웃음)” 심 작가의 그릇이 빛나는 이유는 비단 색깔 때문만은 아니다. 물레를 돌려서 만들어낸 텍스처, 점을 찍거나

Becoming blue, Shim Ji-soo A tea kettle and cup stand proudly adorned in cobalt blue. Blue tableware can be easily found these days, but that wasn’t the case when Shim Ji-soo of workshop Shim’s came to Icheon. Its intensity made it a difficult color to handle. Cobalt was also a rare color, once reserved for the royals. However, it is now one of the most easily found materials.

“It’s not that I like the color blue in particular, but I had a different take on Cheonghwa baekja (white porcelain pieces decorated with patterns in blue). You could say that I looked at Cheonghwa baekjas, and wanted to recreate with a more modern feeling while using Korean colors,” Shim said. “The blue I use contains black (pigments). In the past blue color was expensive so it was used sparing in the decorations, you could say that I am lucky.” It’s not just the color that makes Shim’s creations

스크래치를 내 표현된 아기자기한 포인트는 블루 코발트와 어우 러져 그 매력을 뽐낸다. 처음엔 텍스처와 유약의 어우러짐에 치중했 다면 이제는 텍스처를 보여주고 싶은 욕심이 더 커졌다. 그래서일까. 심 작가의 작품은 블루색상에서 옥색으로 넘어가는 단계에 서 있 다. 나아가 은을 바르는 작업도 한창이다. 블루가 주요 특징이었지 만 처음 영감을 받았던 청아에서 또한 옥색을 가져왔다. “언젠가 는 결국 하얀 순백자를 만들게 될지도 모르겠어요. 블루에서 옥색 으로, 또 옥색에서 은으로. 색은 다 빠지고 그릇 표면의 텍스처 만 남았으면 좋겠어요.” 심 작가의 첫 시작은 그릇이 아니라 오브제였다. 그릇 세계에는 뒤 늦게 뛰어들었지만 생각지도 않았던 재미와 열정이 그녀를 사로잡았 다. 대학원 졸업 후 15년 내리 오브제 작품 활동을 하다 그릇을 빚기 시작한 이유는 하나였다. ‘소통.’ “오브제는 손님들에게 판매되기 보 다 전시장에서 전시되고 마는 경우가 많았어요. 그리고 내가 만든걸 일방적인 의도와 방식으로 강요하는 기분이었다고 할까요. 굉장히 외로웠어요. 그런데 그릇은 달라요. 소비자와 계속해서 소통하는 게 있어요. 소비자들이 직접 가져가서 쓰는 것이기 때문에 디자인이든 쓰임이든 소통할 수밖에 없어요. 사가는 사람이 생각한 기능이든 디 자인이든 뭔가 합이 맞았을 때 구매가 이뤄지잖아요. 오브제도 매력 이 있지만 소비자들과 그릇으로 소통하는 게 재미있는 거 같아요.” 그렇게 10년을 그릇에 매달렸다. 오브제 작업도 틈틈이 하고 있지 만 당분간은 그릇에 집중할 생각이다. 이유는 “만들고 싶은 그릇이 아직도 많아서”라고 했다. “한 3년만 그릇 만들고 다시 오브제로 돌아가야지 했었는데 얼마나 오만한 생각이었는지. 3년해서는 기 본도 안되겠더군요. 그래서 5년을 했는데 이젠 재미가 들린거죠. 하 고 싶은 그릇이 너무 많은 거에요. 우리나라 식문화가 다른 나라에 비 해 정말 많은 종류의 그릇이 필요해요. 밥 그릇, 국 그릇, 접시, 종지, 술잔에 이르기까지 그 형태와 쓰임이 다양하거든요. 이걸 만들면 또 저것도 만들고 싶고. 만들어 보고 싶은 게 너무 많아요. (웃음)” 심 작가도 이번 메종오브제 참여가 두 번째다. 대부분 옥색 라인을 배에 실어 보냈다. “사실 처음 참여했을 때의 결과는 기대만큼은 아니였어요. 그런데 이번엔 달라요. 이천시와 노영희 푸드스타일 리스트의 조력이 컸고, 저도 정수만 남기는 수정 작업을 거듭했어 요. 좋은 결과가 있었으면 좋겠어요.” 시작은 늦었지만 심 작가의 그릇에 대한 애정만큼은 항상 한 발 앞서 가있기 일쑤였다. “좋은 그릇을 만들고 싶어요. 단단하고 야무지고 누가 쓰던 어떤 음식을 담아내든 다 잘 쓰이고 받을 수 있는 그런 야무진 그릇을 만들고 싶어요.

While at first she focused on harmony between the texture and the glaze, she is focusing more on highlight the texture of her works. Due in part to such change, Shim is moving on from blue to jade green in her work. She has also begun using silver. “One day I could be making pure white porcelain pieces. From blue to jade green, and from there to silver. I would like to remove all color, leaving behind just the texture of the clay,” Shim said.

Shim is a latecomer to the world of tableware, having started her career with decorative objects. However, she was captivated by an unexpected passion. She had just one reason for jumping into a new field; communication. “Often objects aren’t purchased by consumers, but simply displayed and that will be it. And I felt as though I was forcing my intent and methods. It was very stressful,” she said. “Tableware is different. There is constant communication with the users. There has to be communication about the design and uses. It’s only when the buyer’s expectations are met, whether it’s the design or purpose (of a piece), a purchase is made.

Decorative objects have merit in their own right, but I like communicating with the consumers.” And she has dedicated the past 10 years to tableware. She still works on objects, but she says she will focus on tableware for the time being. “I thought I would go back to doing objects after about three years, but that was very conceited of me. Three years wasn’t even enough to get the basics.

So I spent five years (on tableware) and I was hooked,” she said, adding that there were more that she wanted to work on the longer she worked with tableware. “Korean cuisine requires so many different types of tableware compared to other cultures. From rice bowls and soup bowls to plates, small bowls and cups for liquor, there is just so much diversity in uses and form. When I make one (type of tableware) I want to try another, there is so much I want to do.”

Shim, who is taking part in MAISON&OBJET for the second time, says that this year’s event will be different.

“You could say that the results were not as good as what I expected the first time. This time it’s different.

Food stylist Roh Young-hee and Icheon city government were a big help, and I left only the essence (of her portfolio). I am hoping for better results,” Shim, whose passion for tableware is second to none, said.

“I want to make good tableware. Strong, and flawless, tableware that can be used by anyone, for any dish.”

민화를 담은, 민화를 닮은 그릇, 여경란 작가 “한국도자기의 매력은 소박한 인간미라고 할까요? 너무 화려하 지 않으면서도 기술적으로 완벽하지도 않지만 담백하잖아요. 제가 민화에 끌리는 이유도 같은 거 같아요. 아마추어들이 그린 거라 전문가의 느낌이 빠져있잖아요. 정겹고 편안한 느낌. 그 래서 더 애정이 가요.” 공방 ‘여기담기’ 여경란 작가의 트레이드 마크는 ‘민화’다. 도서 관에서 우연히 일본에서 발행한 우리나라 민화 책을 발견한 게 그 시작이었다. “책장을 넘기는데 담긴 민화들이 너무 재미있었어요. 민화에 쓰인 색깔도 재미있고 그 안에 담긴 속 뜻도 재미있었어요. 그런 속 뜻과 풋풋한 색감들을 이용해서 작업을 해보고 싶었어요. 특히 문방화(文房畵)가 끌렸던 것 같아요.” 이를 계기로 대학원에

Ceramics that mimic and capture folk paintings, Yeo Kyung-lan “I would say that the appeal of Korean pottery is its humanity. They are not to elaborate, nor are the techniques perfect, but there is a sense of purity,” artist Yeo Kyunglan says. “I think I am draw to folk paintings for the same reason. They were drawn by amateurs, so there isn’t a sense of expertise. They exude familiarity and affection.”

Yeo, who operates the workshop Yeogi-Damki, is known for her use of folk paintings. Her relationship with folk paintings began from a book of Korean folk paintings she came across by chance in Japan. “As I turned the pages, the folk paintings were so interesting. The colors, the meaning captured in them, everything was so interesting,” she said. “I wanted to use such fresh colors, and capture the symbolism. I was particularly drawn

서 민화를 이용한 도자조형 연구를 하면서 토호나 인형 등 조형물을 만들기 시작했다. 그릇을 해야겠다고 느낀 건 8년 전. 그릇의 ‘쓰임’에 매력을 느껴 시작하게 됐다. “조형물은 생각한대로 만 들면 되고 형태에 제약이 없기 때문에 만들어 가는 범위가 넓은 데 그릇은 쓰임에 따라 정해진 사이즈나 형태들이 있다 보니까 한정된 쓰임 범위 내에서 재 색깔을 보여주는 게 힘들지만 재미 있어요. 조형물에 있던 그림을 그릇에 옮기기도 하고 그릇에 담 을 수 없는 것들을 또 조형물로 만들면서 서로 영향을 주고 받는 것 같아요.” 그렇게 민화는 그릇으로 옮겨갔다. 민화를 작품에 접목시키다 보니 주안을 두는 것도 바로 색감이다. “가장 중요한 건 그래도 ‘조화’예요. 아무리 색이 예뻐도 조화를 이뤄야 되니까 그 생각을 제일 많이 하면서 그려요.” 기존 민화를 참고하기도 하지만 상당 부분 여 작가의 일상 생활 속 소재가 또 하나의 민화가 됐다. “제가 그리는 그림도 어떻게 보면 민화잖아 요. 제 생활이 편안하고 투박하게 민화로 또 도자기로 표현되는 게 좋은 거 같아요.” 민화를 담아서일까, 그녀의 작품은 편안하면 서도 재치가 느껴지고 또 소박하면서도 세련됐다. 여 작가의 그릇 은 어떻게 보면 민화를 닮아 있었다. 이번 메종오브제 참여는 두 번째. “재작년에 참가했을 땐 한국 식(食) 문화에만 맞춰가다 보니 시행착오를 겪었는데 이번엔 지난번 보 다 더 많은 관심을 받았으면 좋겠어요. 그리고 작은 소망이 있다 면 내년에도 나갈 수 있는 자신감을 가지고 돌아오는 것? (웃음)” 여 작가의 또 다른 소망은 여성 작가들에게 긍정적인 영향을 끼치 는 작가 되는 것이다. “여자 작가 후배들이 닮고 싶어하는 그런 작 가가 되고 싶어요.” 여 작가는 여성대학교를 나왔다. 그래서 여자 작가 후배들에게 더 애착이 갔다고 한다. “도자기를 만드는 작업 이 사실 노동 강도가 쎄거든요. 또 여자 작가들이 남자 작가들보다 도자기로 자리 잡기가 힘든 부분이 있는 것 같아요. 여대는 그릇을 하는 작가들도 많지 않아서 저도 혼자 깨닫고 배워야 하는 게 많았거 든요. 그래서 여자 후배들에게 앞으로도 많은 도움을 주고 싶어요.” “도자기가 매력적인 이유요? ‘불에서 나왔을 때’ 때문이에요. 단 점일수도 장점일수도 있다고 생각하는데 그림은 제가 칠하는 색 을 바로 바로 컨트롤하면서 원하는 색을 낼 수 있다면 도자기는 불에서 나왔을 때 어떤 색으로 나올지 모르기 때문에 상상하면 서 작업하거든요. 의외의 색이 나오기도 하는 게 또 매력이에요. 그게 재미있는 거 같아요.

to ‘Munbagnwha’ (paintings of books and other items involved in studying).” After that, she began researching ways to incorporate folk paintings into pottery in her post graduate studies, and made clay tigers, dolls and other decorative objects. She began making tableware 8 years ago, drawn by the “uses” of tableware. “Decorative objects can be made according to the imagination, without limitations to their form. However, the size and form of tableware are dictated by their uses. The process of showing my own colors within such boundaries were difficult but fun,” she said. “I applied paintings from the objects to the tableware, and created objects expressing things that could not be through tableware, and in that process (tableware and objects) influence each other.” Like that, the folk paintings moved on to the new medium of tableware.

“The most important thing is ‘harmony.’ I pay the most attention to this part, as no matter how beautiful the colors are they must be in harmony with each other,” she said. In her work, she refers to existing paintings, but her everyday life has also become a source of inspiration. “What I paint is in a sense folk painting. I like my life being expressed as folk paintings, and pottery,” said Yeo, whose creations are witty, modest yet refined, just like folk paintings.

“Year before last, I focused only on Korean culinary culture, so there were difficulties. This time, I hope to get more attention. It’s a small wish that I come back from this with the confidence to go back next year,” Yeo said, who is not preparing for her second MAISON&OBJET. Yeo has another small wish, which is to become a positive influence to other female artists. “I want to be someone younger female artists aspire to be like,” said Yeo, who studied at a women’s university. “Pottery is a labor intensive field. Also, it seems it is more difficult for women to establish themselves in this field. There aren’t many woman making tableware, and I had to find out many things for myself. So, I want to be of help to younger women artists.”

Yeo says that the reason she is drawn to pottery is fire.

“The allure of pottery? It’s ‘the moment (pottery) is taken out of the fire (kiln). This could be a disadvantage, but while in painting you can control the colors, but with pottery you can’t tell what color the pieces will be after being fired. So you have to imagine the colors. Sometimes unexpected colors are produced, that is another appealing point.”

‘마음을 담아서’ 신기복 작가 경기도 이천 도심에서 차를 한참 타고 들어가면 보이는 고즈넉한 마을. 물레 돌리는 소리를 따라 들어가자 공방 ‘마음을 담아서’를 찾을 수 있었다. 도자기 만드는 일에는 마음을 담아야 한다고 스 스로에게 되뇌려 붙인 이름이라고 한다. 마음을 담는 도예가, 신기복 작가를 만났다. 메종오브제 준비가 한창인 요즘, 신 작가가 가장 관심을 두고 있는 건 프랑스 요리다. 프랑스 음식 사진은 물론 프랑스 요리 영상을 찾 아보고 직접 포크와 나이프를 이용해 음식을 먹어보는 게 주요 일 과가 됐다. 작업하기에도 바쁠 시기에 이를 고집하는 이유가 뭘까. “밥공기를 만들 때 가장 중요한 건 ‘밥알이 몇 개나 들어가느냐’에 요.” 장인 정신과 같은 거창한 미사여구 혹은 반죽기법이나 물레를 돌리는 방법 등 기술적인 독창성을 기대했던 것일까. 어떻게 보면

Pouring seoul and heart, Shin Ki-bok In a quiet village, a long drive from the center of Icheon, the sounds of a potter’s wheel turning lead visitors to the Shin Ki-bok Studio. The studio’s Korean name translates to “pouring in the soul,” a name Shin came up with as a reminder to himself that the soul must go into creating pottery.

In preparing for MAISON&OBJET, Shin threw himself into the world of French cuisine. Analyzing photographs and videos of French cuisine, and using fork and knife to eat his meals have become part of his routine.

His answer to the question why he is dedicating so much of his time to such activities when the preparations were in full swing was surprisingly simple. “When you are making a rice bowl, the most important element to consider is ‘how many grains of rice can fit,’” he said.

당연한 말로 뒤통수를 세게 얻어 맞은 기분이었다. 하지만 이것이 곧 본질이라는 걸 깨닫는 데는 그리 오래 걸리지 않았다. “이 그릇에 무엇이 얼마나 담길지에 대한 치열한 고민이 있은 후에야 그릇 한 점이 만들어져요. 그 다음엔 세척을 하고 수납을 해보죠. 도자 는 작품이기 이전에 누군가 실생활에서 사용하게 될 식기니까요. 중요한 건 결국 음식을 담는 도구로 사용된다는 겁니다.” 이번 메종오브제를 준비하면서도 이러한 그의 철학은 고스란히 반 영 됐다. “그 나라 식(食)문화를 알지 않고서는 절대 제대로 된 그 릇을 만들 수가 없어요. 어떤 게 담기게 될지 그 나라 사람들은 어 떻게 세척을 하고 수납을 하는지 이 모든 고민이 필요해요. 디자인 측면에서도 마찬가지에요. 그릇은 혼자 놓여 있을 때도 예뻐야 하 지만 음식이 담겼을 때도 같이 예뻐야 돼요. 여기에 뭐가 담길지를 알아야 그릇도 만들 수 있죠.” 그가 이번 메종오브제에서 그 나라 요리와 식문화에 이토록 주안을 두는 이유였다. 신 작가가 출품하게 될 작품 중 대표적인 건 비대칭 사각형이 특 징인 접시다. 언뜻 보면 멋스럽게 길이를 다르게 한 비대칭의 사 각형 같지만 모든 건 여기 담기게 될 고등어, 나물, 소스 등 음식 의 형태를 모두 닮아 있었다. 무엇이 담길 것인가에 대한 치열한 고민의 흔적이었다. 그가 프랑스 행 비행기에 싣고 가는 건 단순 그릇만이 아니었다. 공방 이름처럼 ‘마음을 담아서’ 가는 비행이 될 예정이다. “우리나라의 대표적인 도자기인 달항아리에는 이를 사용하는 사람이 잘되길 바라는 마음이 담겨있대요. 모든 도자기 에는 다 마음이 담겨 있어요. 누군가를 대접할 때 그 정성과 마음 을 담는 게 그릇이거든요. 제가 그릇을 만들어 팔지만, 결국 그 안 에 담기는 건 마음과 정성, 사랑입니다.” “도자기는 사람과 많이 닮았어요. 손으로 만든 거라 어딘가 허술 한 부분이 있죠, 사람이 완벽하지 않은 것처럼요. 그냥 막 다룰 수 도 없고 함부로 사용하면 깨져버려요. 도자기를 빚는 건 사람을 대 하는 거랑 똑같다고 보면 됩니다.” 신 작가가 도자기를 빚는 이유는 그것이 사람을 닮아서라고 했지만, 또한 그를 닮아서가 아닐까.

The simplicity of the answer came as a surprise, but it soon became obvious that this is indeed is the essence of the issue.

“A piece of crockery is born only after long contemplations about what will be contained it in. Then, (a piece is) tested for washing and storage, because it is a piece of crockery that has real uses before it is a piece of art.

Ultimately, the most important thing is that (a piece is) used as a utensil for containing food,” he said.

In preparing for MAISON&OBJET, Shin held to this philosophy. “You cannot make a piece of crockery properly without knowing a country’s culinary culture. You have to consider what will be put in them, and how the people of a particular country wash and store their plates,” Jang said, explaining why he is focusing on French cuisine ahead of MAISON&OBJET. “Design is the same.

A plate must look good on its own, but it must also be beautiful when food is placed on it. You have to know what will be placed in a piece of crockery before you can make one.”

One of Shin’s main pieces is an asymmetric rectangular plate. At a first glance, the shape is simply a design feature, but closer inspection reveals that its shape reflects various aspects of the foods that will be placed on it.

On his journey to France, he will not simply be taking his creations. It will be a journey with a soul, just like the name of his studio. “The moon jar is said to contain the hope that it will be useful to many people. Every piece of pottery has a soul, as a plate contains not only the food, but also the soul of those who prepare the food. I make and sell tableware, but what they contain is my soul, love and dedication,” he said.

“Pottery is a lot like people. They are not perfect as they are handmade, just like how people are not perfect. You can treat them any way you want, and they break if they are mistreated. Making ceramics is just like interacting with people.”

‘옹기장이’를 꿈꾸는 작가, 김병일

“제게 도예가라는 말은 익숙하지가 않아요. 그냥 밥그릇 만드는 사람입니다. (웃음)” 투박하게 내뱉은 한 마디에 20년 넘게 그릇 을 만들어 온 장인 정신이 고스란히 베어났다. 옹기장이를 꿈꾸지 만 밥 그릇 만드는 남자, 김병일 작가를 만났다. 유독 눈에 띄는 공방 이름 ‘무경(撫耕)’. 어루만질 무, 경작할 경 을 썼다고 한다. 김병일 작가의 호(號)이기도 하다. “밭을 갈고 경 작하라는 의미인데 매일 흙을 만지니, 이걸로 그릇을 만들어 팔아 서 먹고 살라는 의미라고 생각하고 쓰고 있습니다. 밥그릇은 우리 가 사는데 가장 중요한 수단이잖아요. ‘도예한다’, ‘예술한다’는 말 보다 밥그릇 만든다는 말을 저는 쓰고 싶어요. 그게 제 업이고요.”

Kim Byung-il, the artist who dreams of becoming a master of onggi “To me the term ceramic artist is still not familiar. I am just someone who makes rice bowls,” artist Kim Byungil says. The philosophy he had developed during his career spanning more than two decades were clearly visible in his unfiltered words.

Just like his answer, the name of his studio “Mukyung (撫耕)” stood out. The character “mu” means to stroke, and “kyung” is to cultivate. It is also Kim’s penname. “It means to cultivate the land, but since I work with clay every day, I use it to mean that I should earn a living by working the clay,” he said. “Tableware is the most important element in everyday life. I prefer to say that I make rice bowls, over ‘artist’ or ‘ceramicist.’ This is what I do.”

김병일 작가의 도자기는 한국의 색을 머금고 있다. 우리나라 전통 색인 ‘오방색’을 입혔다. “우리나라 색깔이라 좋기도 했고 오방색 이라는 게 재미도 있었어요. 같은 빨간, 파란, 검정이라도 우리 색 깔만의 멋과 맛이 있다고 할까요. 우리 나라 도자기가 백자, 청자 같이 단순한 색에서 탈피해서 차별화를 주고 싶었어요. 한국의 전 통적인 색이 뭐가 있을까 하다가 찾은 게 바로 오방색이에요.” 또 하나 특이한 점은 옹기 기법을 사용한다는 점이다. 과거 옹기 만 드는 곳에 갔다가 한 눈에 반해 옹기 만드는 법을 배우기 시작했고 곧 그 매력에 푹 빠졌다. 현실적 이유로 지금은 그릇을 만들고 있 지만, 옹기에 대한 꿈은 아직 맘 속 깊은 곳에서 불을 떼고 있다. “저장 문화를 식문화로 갖고 있는 우리 나라에서 옹기는 중요한 그 릇 중 하나에요. 가장 한국스러운 도자라고 할까요? 언젠가는 옹 기장이로 사는 게 제 꿈입니다.” 김 작가는 이번 메종오브제 참여가 두 번째다. 작년에는 자비를 들 여 가족들 모두와 함께 프랑스행 비행기에 올랐다. 그때 느꼈던 한 계는 이미 기계로 도자기를 빚는 현실에서 한국 백자가 차별성을 인정받지 못하는 아쉬움이었다. “기계는 가지고 있지 않는 손맛을 찾는 게 한국 도자기를 보여줄 수 있는 유일한 길이라고 생각했어 요. 그곳에 전시되고 있는 작품 중에는 공산품도 있었는데 한국 도 자기만의 손맛을 더 살려야겠다는 생각이 들더라고요. 이번 작품 에서도 그런 부분에 집중했습니다.” 두 번째 참여이니 좀더 욕심을 부릴 법도 하건만, 목표는 사뭇 소박했다. “어떤 그릇이 많이 팔리 는지 그걸 보고 싶어요. 많이 팔고 오는 것보다 몇 센티미터의 어떤 형태의 그릇이 나갔는지를 보고 싶어요. 우리 나라도 음식 문화가 자꾸만 서양식으로 변화하기 때문에 그걸 무시할 수가 없어요. 그 래서 그걸 배워오려 해요. 점점 서구화되는 식(食)문화에서 사람들 이 선호하는 그릇은 무엇인지.” 이번에 김 작가가 출품하는 작품도 대부분 프랑스 식문화에 맞는 28~29cm의 그릇이다. 색깔은 세계 사람들이 ‘가장 동양적인 색’으로 느낀다는 청자에 비중을 뒀다. 전통적인 방법과 색을 고수하며 그릇을 만든 지 어언 20여년. 결국 그가 만들고 싶은 그릇은 하나였다. “그냥 생활 속에서 사람들한테 편안한 그릇을 만들고 싶어요. ‘이 그릇은 편안하다 따뜻하다’ 이 런 이야기를 듣는 게 밥그릇 만드는 사람으로서의 제 목표입니다.”

In his works, Kim uses Korean colors, the traditional Ohbangsaek, or five colors: black, blue, red, yellow and white. “I like the colors as they are Korean, and found the concept interesting. There is a Korean element to them, even if they are like any other black, blue and red,” he said. “I wanted to break away from the simple colors of Korean pottery such as white and celadon. Ohbangsaek is what I found while I was searching for traditional colors.” Another element that stands out is that he uses the Onggi production technique. He fell in love with Onggi in the past, and while he makes tableware, he still yearns to become an Onggi maker. “In Korean cuisine, storage plays a big part, and so Onggi has an important role. Perhaps it is the most Korean pottery? My dream is to one day become an Onggi craftsman,” he said.

Kim is taking part in MAISON&OBJET for the second time this year. Last year, he took his entire family to France, covering the costs himself. At last year’s event, he felt that Korean pottery was not getting the recognition it deserved in today’s times with machine-produced pottery. “I felt that the only way to set Korean pottery apart is through aspects that can only be created by hand,” he said. “Some factory-produced items were on display, and I felt that the handmade aspects of Korean pottery should be highlighted. This is the element I focused on in this project.” Although this is his second time at the event, he has a simple goal. “I want to see which items sell well. Rather than selling a lot of items, I want to see which size and shapes prove popular. Korea’s food culture is becoming more and more westernized, and I want to learn what is popular in western culinary culture,” he said.

True to his words, most of Kim’s works that will be displayed are between 28 centimeters and 29 centimeters in size, which is suitable for French cuisine, while celadon is the main color theme. Ultimately, Kim says that there is just one type of tableware that he wants to create. “I want to make tableware that is comfortable in everyday life. Having people describe my creations as being comfortable, that is my goal.”

백자를 닮은 명장, 김판기 경기도 이천에 20여년 이상 터를 잡고 있는 공방 ‘지강도요(之江 陶窯)’ 김판기 명장은 이곳 이천 도자기와 더불어 또 다른 자랑이 다. “지강도요, 강물처럼 유유한 생을 살되 작품을 만들면서도 서 두르지 말고 도도하게 행하라는 뜻을 담고 있어요. 그림 공부할 때 스승님께서 지어주셨어요. 그림이 아닌 도자기를 하게 됐지만 그 뜻처럼 사는 게 결국 제가 걸어가야 할 길 아닐까요?” 미대에 진학하기 위해 그림을 배우던 와중, 생각지도 못한 빛깔이 인생을 바꾸어 놓았다. 국립 박물관에서 처음 본 청자를 보고 한 눈에 마음을 빼앗겨 버렸다. 그 길로 이천 행 버스를 탔다. 당시 나 이 스물 다섯. 배낭 하나만 든 채 무작정 이천 터미널에 내린 소년 은 이 공방 저 공방을 다니며 도자기를 배웠다. 나만의 가마(공방)

A master with the soul of the moon jar, Kim Pan-ki Master craftsman Kim Pan-ki, who has been running the workshop Ji Gang Do Yo (之江陶窯),’ is the pride of Icheol along with ceramics. “Ji Gang Do Yo means to live as the river flows, but to maintain a sense of pride and move at one’s own pace in the creative process,” Kim said. “My teacher when I was studying painting came up with the name. I ended up working in ceramics, but perhaps living like that is my destined path?”

He had prepared to study art at university, but his path was completely changed by an unexpected color; the color of celadon pottery he saw at the National Museum of Korea. At the age of 25, he jumped on to a bus bound for Icheon. The young man went from one workshop to another to learn the art. It took him 10 years to set up his

를 만들기까지 10년이 걸렸다. 강물 흐르듯 36년이 흐른 지금, 그 소년은 이천 도자기 명장이 됐다. 김 명장의 대표적인 작품은 백자 달항아리, 빗살문양 청자 등이다. 이번 메종오브제 출품 작 품은 순 백자라인으로만 구성했다. 노영희 푸드스타일리스트의 맘 을 사로 잡은 것도 백자였다. “백자에는 솔직함이 있어요. 투명 유약을 쓰기 때문에 속살이 훤히 들여다 보이거든요. 물레를 돌 려 손으로 형태를 잡기 때문에 손자국이 그대로 남아요. 작가의 솔직함과 재료의 솔직함이 모두 드러나게 되는 거죠. 그게 백자 의 매력인 거 같아요. 단단하다는 장점도 빼 놓을 수 없지만요.” 김 명장의 작품 철학도 백자를 닮았다. “번잡한 기교와 다채로운 색채의 표현보다는 대토와 유약의 고유한 특성이 그대로 묻어나 는 작업을 지향하고 있어요. 제가 투명한 유약만을 고집해 사용 하는 이유도 이와 같아요. 대토의 솔직함을 집약할 수 있는 재료 니까요.” 명장의 타이틀을 얻었지만, 안주하지 않았다. 끊임없는 변화를 받아들이고 작품에 접목시키는 작업은 더 부단해졌다. 과거와 전통에만 매몰되지 않으려는 노력이 지금의 그를 있게 했다. “전통 기법을 지켜내면서도 현대의 식(食) 문화와 적절하 게 융합된 그릇을 만들고 싶어요. 현재의 전통에 동참한다고 할 까요? 전통적인 방법은 고수하되 이 시대에 유행하는, 현대의 문 화를 받아들일 줄 아는 작가가 되고 싶어요. 그릇이라는 건 옛 것 도 훌륭하지만 지금의 문화와 접목 됐을 때 인기를 얻고 사람들 이 사가잖아요. 고유의 정체성과 뿌리는 가져가되 현대 소비자 들의 눈높이도 맞추는 것도 중요하다고 생각해요. 제 공방 이름 처럼 그것 또한 물 흐르듯 변화를 수용하는 방식이 아닐까요?” 숱한 국제 행사에 나가 화려한 수상 이력도 쌓았지만 이번 무대 또한 그에겐 또 다른 도전이다. “독창적이고 기능적으로도 우수 한 한국 도자기는 국제 무대에서 항상 관심의 대상이에요. 하지 만 유럽의 식(食) 문화와 연결되지 못해 관심에 그치고 마는 게 아쉬웠어요. 섬세함과 독특한 기법을 가진 우리 도자기를 유럽 의 식 문화와 맞출 수 있다면 한국 도자기는 충분히 세계로 뻗어 나갈 수 있는 잠재력을 갖고 있다고 생각해요. 이번 무대가 그 계기가 되길 소망합니다. (웃음)”

own kiln, but today, 36 years down the line, he has become a master. Kim’s most recognizable works include moon jars, and celadon pottery with comb-patterns, however, he prepared an all-moon jar portfolio for MAISON&OBJET. Kim’s moon jar tableware had stolen the heart of food stylist Roh Young-hee. “The moon jar is honest. A clear glaze is used, so everything is laid bare.

The marks left by the hands on the potter’s wheel, the honesty of the artist and the material, it’s all visible,” he said. “I think this is the allure of the moon jar. Of course, its strength is an advantage that cannot be left out.”

Kim’s approach to his craft is a lot like the moon jar.

“Rather than elaborate techniques and colors, I prefer methods that keep the characteristics of the clay and the glaze alive,” he said. “This is the reason I only use clear glazes, because it is a material that allows the honesty of the clay to be amplified.” His endeavors have won him the title of master, but he did not stop there.

He continues learning new things and applying them to his work. His efforts to avoid being buried in tradition have given birth to the master that he is today. “I want to make tableware that combines traditional methods with modern life style. You could say that I am a part of today’s traditions? I want to be an artist who can take on the trendy, modern culture, while keeping traditions alive,” he said. “Traditional items are great, but tableware wins of the consumer when tradition is combined with today’s culture. I think it’s important to maintain roots and identity, while at the same time meeting the demands of today’s consumers. Wouldn’t that be accepting changes like the river flows, just like the name of my workshop?”

He has taken part in numerous international events, and has a long list of awards to his name. However, even to him, the upcoming event is a new challenge.

“Korean ceramics always draw attention on the international stage, but (I have) always been disappointed at the failure to make the connection to western culinary culture,” he said. “By adapting to western culture, Korean ceramics has the potential to spread across the world. I hope this event will be an opportunity to achieve that.”

설레는 파동을 전하다, 김희종 작가 “도자기는 만드는 사람에게, 사용하는 사람에게, 대접받는 사람 에게도 모두 ‘파동’이에요. 제가 만든 그릇을 사용하는 사람은 그 릇을 통해 좋은 파동을 얻어요. 이는 대접하는 사람에게도 고스란 히 전해지죠. 나중에 제 그릇을 사용해보고 ‘너무 좋았다’는 피드 백을 해주시면 그게 저한테는 또 파동으로 다가와요. 그릇 만드는 사람들은 소비자에게 감동을 줘야 한다고 생각해요. 사실 도자 기는 생필품이 아니거든요. 나름의 철학을 담아 소비자에게 긍 정적인 파동을 줘야 하는 거 같아요. 제 바람도 그겁니다. 좋은 파동을 계속 주고 받는 것.” 김희종 작가가 그릇에 담고 싶은 ‘파동’은 무엇일까. 그의 공방 이름, 그리고 작품이 그 답을 갖고 있었다. 식구기(器). 경기도

A maker of waves, Kim Hee-jong “Ceramics, they are a ‘wave’ to everyone, the creators, users and those who are served. People who use my tableware receive a positive wave, and that is passed on to the guests. When I get positive feedback about my creations, then that is another wave that comes to be,” Kim Hee-jong says. “I think a ceramicist needs to move the consumers. Ceramics aren’t necessities, so I feel that you need to put your philosophy into it to send a positive wave. That’s what I want to achieve, to keep giving and receiving positive waves.”

What is this ‘wave’ Kim wants to capture? The answer to that question was in his works, and the name

이천의 도자기 마을, 예스파크에서도 유독 눈에 띄는 공방 상호 였다. “저희 어머님이 돌아가시기 전에 식구라는 말을 자주 쓰 셨어요. 함께 먹고 사는 식구들이 마주앉아 음식을 먹는 것만큼 소중한 게 어디 있을까 싶어요. 그릇이란 것도 그런 거 같아요. 밥 먹는 식구들이 쓰는 그릇. 그래서 식구기라고 이름을 지었어 요.” 그의 작품에도 이러한 철학을 엿볼 수 있다. 널찍한 그릇 한 가운데 배꼽을 연상시키는 동그란 원이 자리하고 있었다. “배꼽 은 생명의 근원일수도 있고, 밥을 먹는 식(食)문화와도 연결되 고, 가족을 하나로 이어주는 근원 같기도 해서 배꼽 문양을 넣기 시작했어요. 나름의 제 철학을 담은 거죠.” 김 작가의 대표적인 작품은 합(盒)이다. 동그랗고 넓은 뚜껑으로 덮은 그릇이 김 작가의 주력 작품이다. 용도를 묻는 질문에 “특 별한 용도를 염두에 두고 만든 것이 아니”라며, “철저하게 소비 자들에게 맡기고 싶다”고 답했다. “쓰임을 생각하고 만드는 것 도 중요하지만, 용도에 갇혀버리는 거 같았어요. 옛날 어른들이 차(茶) 사발에 우주를 담는다고 했는데, 그 안에 막걸리도 담고 밥, 국도 담잖아요.” 대부분 작품이 희디 흰 백자인 이유기도 했 다. “저는 백자가 너무너무 좋아요. 소비자에게 도화지를 주고 싶어요. 그 그릇을 어떻게 사용하든 소비자들에게 주어지는 거 죠.” 이번 메종오브제를 위해 기존에 만들던 작은 합의 크기를 키웠다. 샐러드 보울 등이 발달한 프랑스의 식문화와 잘 어울릴 수 있다는 노영희 푸드스타일리스트의 조언이 있었다. “해외 페 어(Fare)에 항상 관심을 가졌지만 참여하는 건 이번이 처음이에 요. 좋은 기회를 얻게 돼 감사하고 이번 이천 도자기의 메종오 브제 참여가 단발성 이벤트가 아닌 아닌 지속적인 연례 행사로 자리잡았으면 합니다. 또, 이번에 저희 작가들이 가서 좋은 성 과를 거둬서 내년, 또 내후년에도 더 많은 작가들이 참여해 한 국 도자기가 세계 무대에서 거듭나는 계기가 됐으면 좋겠어요.” 앞으로 어떤 도예 작가가 되고 싶냐는 질문에 “물에 살짝 젖어 있는 스폰지가 되고 싶다”는 답이 되돌아 왔다. 흙을 빚는 솜씨 만큼이나 언어를 빚는 솜씨도 빼어난 작가였다. “마른 스폰지 는 물에 둥둥 뜨는데 물에 살짝 젖어 있는 스폰지는 물을 모두 빨아들이거든요. 조금 젖어있는 스폰지 같은 사람이라면 늘 좋 은 걸 흡수하고 다양한 걸 받아들이면서 더 나은 그릇을 만들고 더 나은 파동을 줄 수 있는 작가가 되어 있지 않을까요. (웃음)”

of his studio the “Kim Heejong’s Sicgugi.” The name is one of the most unique among the workshops located in Ye’s Park, the ceramic arts village in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province. “My mother, before she passed away, used the word ‘sicgu’ a lot. I now feel that perhaps the sicgu (family) sharing a meal is the most precious thing,” he said. “Tableware is the same. Tools that the family use in sharing a meal, and the name Sicgugi came from that.”

It’s not hard to see this philosophy in his works such as a large plate with a small circle in the middle, reminiscent of the bellybutton. “The bellybutton is where life begins, I also feel a link to food culture, and a sense that it is an anchor that links the family together. In a sense, the bellybutton pattern contains my philosophy,” he said.

One of Kim’s main works are the “hap (陶)” (a bowl with a matching, detached lid). “I didn’t make them with a purpose in mind. I want to leave that completely up to the users,” he said, when asked what they were designed for. “Having an idea of the use is important, but I feel that it can be a trip. Our ancestors used to say that the tea bowl contains the universe, (the tea bowl) can also be used for liquor, rice and soup,” he said. Such approach is also the reason behind his favoring the color white. “I love it. I want to give the user a blank canvas.

How a piece of pottery is used is up to the consumer.”

For MAISON&OBJET, he made larger hap pieces, taking food stylist Roh Young-hee’s advice that larger pieces could be better suited to French lifestyle where salad bowls and similar tableware are commonly used. “I have always been interested in overseas fairs, but this is the first time participating. I am grateful for the opportunity, and I hope I get to participate on a regular basis,” he said. “I also hope that we (Korean artists) make a mark this year, so that more Korean artists have the opportunity to take part in coming years, and give Korean ceramics a larger presence in the international stage.”

Asked about his goal as a ceramicist, he said that he wants to “become a moist sponge.”

“A dry sponge will float, but a moist one absorbs water.

If I was like a moist sponge, I would absorb new things and make better tableware, and create even more positive waves.”

생각해요.” 우 작가는 최근 서로 다른 그림을 그린 접시와 컵을 각 100개씩 만들어 선보이기도 했다. 절대 같은 그림을 두 번 그 리지 않는 다는 것도 우 작가의 작품 철학이다. 여 작가 작품의 또 다른 특징은 과거와 현대를 모두 담고 있다 는 것이다. 전통적이면서도 현대적이고 구수하면서도 세련됐다. 여 작가가 작품을 만들면서 주안을 두는 것도 바로 과거와 현대 의 조화이자 과거와 현대의 중간 지점을 찾는 작업이다. “제 고향 이 백령도에요. 시골에서 자라서 그런지 몰라도 옛날 구수한 감성 이 묻어나는 거 같아요. 또 작업하는 방식은 현대적 해석이 많아 서 사람들이 제 작품을 보고도 ‘과거와 현대의 중간’ 같다는 말을 많이들 하시는 거 같아요. 저도 그 말이 제일 듣기 좋아요. (웃음)” 이러한 회화적 장점이 이번 메종오브제를 준비하면서는 양날의 검이 되기도 했다. “노영희 푸드스타일리스트에게 컨설팅을 받 는데, ‘그릇에 그림이 너무 많으면 음식을 담았을 때 음식을 살려 줄 수 없다’는 조언을 해주셔서 처음엔 조금 걱정이 많았죠. 그래 도 제 장점을 최대한 살리는 방법으로 결과물을 만들어 냈어요.” 한국 도자기의 매력을 묻는 질문에 여 작가는 망설임 없이 ‘선’ 이라고 말했다. “선이 제일 예쁜 것 같아요. 그 선이 어떻게 쓰이 면 풍부해 보이기도 하고 어떨 때는 날카롭고 비어 보이기도 하 거든요. 공간을 다 채워버릴 수 있는 것도 선인 거 같아요. 제가 주로 만드는 오브제 중 하나로 달항아리 작품이 있는데 가장 공 을 들이는 것도 선이에요.” 우 작가는 앞으로 그릇 작업과 함께 아트월 작업에도 다시 뛰어 들 생각이다. “아트월은 그 스케일이 주는 무게감과 감동이 있는 거 같아요. 그릇도 재미있지만 아트월 작품을 통해서 그릇이란 도화지 속에 담을 수 있는 것도 더 많아질 것 같아요.”

Woo, who once exhibited 100 cups and plates each with different paintings, has a principle of never painting the same thing twice. Another characteristic of Woo’s works is that they contain past and the present – having both traditional and modern aspects, simultaneously familiar and sophisticated. This is a major focus for Woo, finding harmony and middle ground between the past and the present. “I am from Baekryeong Island. Perhaps because I grew up in the countryside, my works have a sense of familiarity, but my process is quite modern, so many people say that my creations are like the middle ground between the past and the present. I do like such assessment the best,” Woo said.

The painting-like aspects of her work, however, came as a double-edged sword in preparing for MAISON&OBJET. “Food stylist Roh Young-hee advised that if a plate is too full with a painting, the food may not be able to stand out, so I was worried for a while,” Woo said. “Still, I kept my style as much as possible in the end products.”

Asked on the most alluring element of Korean ceramics, Woo did not hesitate to say that it is the “line.” “I think it’s the line. The line can be used to (create a sense of) fullness, or at other times sharpness and of space. I feel that a line could be used to fill an entire space. I often work on moon jars, and line is the part that I pay the most attention to,” Woo said.

While Woo currently works on pottery, she plans to revisit her roots in the future.

“An art wall imparts a sense of weight and emotion through its sheer scale. (Working on) tableware is interesting, but I feel that working on art walls will give me more ideas.”
