During Latinx Heritage Month (Monday, September 15, to Wednesday, October 15), we honor the culture, creativity, cuisine and contributions of the Latinx community. We consider it a privilege to uplift the artists and changemakers who have helped to shape our country and our world.
This year, kick off the celebration with American Masters: Rita Moreno — Just A Girl Who Decided to Go for It, reairing on Thursday, September 18, at 8pm on KQED Plus. Tune in to explore the 70-year career of this EGOT: The Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award-winning performer who defied humble beginnings to become an icon. Then watch reruns of VOCES American Historia: The Untold History of Latinos, on Fridays, September 19, September 26 and October 3, at 8pm on KQED 9. Hosted by John Leguizamo, the show takes viewers on a captivating journey, delving into both well-known and lesser-known histories and shining a light on the rich and often overlooked story of Latinos.
On Friday, September 26, at 9pm on KQED 9, you won’t want to miss the 38th Hispanic Heritage Awards held at the historic Warner Theater in Washington D.C. This annual ceremony recognizes excellence in a variety of disciplines and is considered the highest possible honor for Latinx people by Latinx people. Finish out the month with a whole new season of Pati’s Mexican Table, which premieres on Tuesday, September 30, at 7pm on KQED 9. Join Pati as she returns to her hometown of Mexico City to enjoy churros at legendary shop El Moro then ventures to the world’s busiest market, Central de Abastos. You’ll find special Latinx Heritage Month programming throughout the listings highlighted in this shade of blue
Dear Subscriber,
Thank you for being a loyal member and reader of On KQED Magazine, your monthly guide to KQED Public Television. As you may know, public media stations across the country are experiencing unprecedented challenges due to a clawback of federal funding. To confront a widening budget shortfall, one of our cost-saving measures is to reduce the size of On KQED from 16 to 12 pages. This change will be reflected in the upcoming October issue.
We’ve had to make some hard decisions and are grateful that we’re able to continue to provide this valued publication in reduced form. Space will be preserved for the TV programming listings at the expense of other features like the KQED Live Events section. But rest assured that all of the information that was previously available in the magazine can still be found on kqed.org
For nearly 30 years, the body count has been rising in Midsomer. Despite two DCI Barnabys and five detective sergeants, murderers continue to flock to this fictional English countryside to commit remarkably imaginative crimes. Whether they suffocate their victims in dried produce or douse them in truffle oil and proffer them to wild boars, these murderers are unique. Through 22 seasons, we’ve seen pitch forks and robot arms, poison and road rage. It’s been wildly entertaining from the start, and — thank goodness — it’s still going.
Now entering Season 23, Detective Chief Inspector John Barnaby and Detective Sergeant Jamie Winter are tracking the demise of a local survivalist. We know the victim was killed in his bomb shelter — where he felt the most protected — but we don’t know why or how it was carried out. The maze of characters keeps us guessing as the storyline intertwines, twisting the clarity on who is innocent and who is intent on homicide. It’s a perfect Midsomer murder.
But, Midsomer is more than beguiling mysteries. The first time I heard the theme song, it captivated me. Its haunting lull and whimsical sadness was somehow nostalgic and new, both creepy and darling. I loved the juxtaposition, the way it pitted a quaint, idyllic setting against a scene of venomous villagers out for blood. I suppose that’s the recipe for all of our favorite mysteries: charming civility mixed with disastrous dishonesty.
Settle in and enjoy this new season knowing you’ll be caught off guard, thrown for a loop, misdirected and turned off course. You’ll be trying to pull the clues together even after the murderer retrofits a life raft and ping-pongs a victim within a forest of trees. It is Midsomer Murders after all. Be sure to tune in on Wednesday, September 3, at 8pm on KQED Plus Elyce Berrigan, Managing Editor
Maigret on MASTERPIECE

But, his unconventional methods and unique sense of justice constantly put him at odds with his superiors and the judicial system he’s supposed to represent.

No matter who you are or where you live, the weather affects us all. I love a good medical drama. From long-running classics like Call the Midwife to new favorites like The Pitt, I never get tired of watching a bunch of doctors trying to diagnose a mystery illness. Of course, like all the best medical dramas, The Good Karma Hospital is about so much more than just curing diseases: It’s full of vibrant characters and has a lot of heart. This season, Dr. Ruby Walker returns to the hospital after months away with her family — but will she stay for good? Season 3 of The Good Karma Hospital will be coming to KQED Plus later this year, but Passport members get early access and can watch the whole season now.

Congress recently approved a bill to claw back funds for public media. KQED stands to lose approximately $8 million per year. This drastic action threatens local journalism, emergency communications and KQED’s mission to provide free, enriching programming to everyone in the Bay Area. For more than 70 years, KQED has been there for the Bay Area. Now we need you to be there for us.
