Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Every May we reflect on the history, achievements and impactful stories of Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). From art and cooking to civil disobedience and social justice, the lineup of programming this month exemplifies the AAPI communities who’ve undeniably shaped our nation and culture, and the events that have divided and united us.

At KQED, one of the ways we honor and celebrate AAPI Heritage Month is by curating documentaries, series and shows related to it. You’ll discover illuminating documentaries such as Independent Lens: Free Chol Soo Lee on Saturday, May 3, at 10pm on KQED 9, a film about a wrongfully convicted Korean immigrant and his fight for eventual freedom, as well as special episodes of Finding Your Roots, Antiques Roadshow and Great Performances. You can watch these programs on KQED Public Television, live on the KQED App or by streaming on KQED Passport.

In the listings, which begin on page 5, you’ll see AAPI Heritage Month shows highlighted in this color. The following programs are a glimpse of what you’ll find:

Miss Austen on MASTERPIECE: A Tale of Two Sisters

Beautifully woven between two time periods — the late 1700s and 1830s — Miss Austen reimagines the events of Jane Austen’s teenage years with her only sister, Cassandra, and the events that followed Jane’s death decades later. Filled with all of the elements one would hope for in a MASTERPIECE drama, the new PBS series boasts romance and rivalry, deception and greed throughout its exploration of the core mystery: Why did Cassandra burn Jane’s personal letters?

Based on the novel by Gill Hornby, Miss Austen details the complex social dynamics of the 18th and 19th centuries and the essential nature of marriage in women’s lives. It also delves into the critical importance of family legacies and societal reputations — and the lengths sometimes taken to ensure they are not compromised. Beyond the surprises in the everwinding story, the acting is brilliant and stars Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard, The Durrells in Corfu) as Cassandra and Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones) as Isabella Fowle, the niece of Cassandra’s beloved Tom.

It’s easy to feel transported to this era of Regency fashion and design, with silk gowns and ornamental hats, quills and ink. As I watched, I couldn’t help imagining what it would be like to navigate life in this time before phones and computers, when one copy of a letter was the only evidence of its existence or the contents therein. It amplifies Cassandra’s decision to destroy documents that would have given the world insight into Jane’s most personal thoughts.

I hope you feel swept away by this elegant retelling of Jane and Cassandra’s story as much as I did. The first two episodes air on Sundays, May 4 and 11, at 9pm on KQED 9 and the final two episodes air back to back on Sunday, May 18, at 9pm and 10pm on KQED 9 Elyce Berrigan, Managing Editor

SATURDAY NIGHT MOVIE

Escape From Alcatraz

Saturday, May 3, at 8pm on KQED 9

In this 1979 film, Frank Morris (Clint Eastwood) is sent to serve the rest of his life sentence at San Francisco’s Alcatraz — America’s infamously brutal and inescapable maximum security prison. Fed up, Morris and two convict brothers (Fred Ward, Jack Thibeau) meticulously plan the unthinkable: an escape from the island.

MISS AUSTEN ON MASTERPIECE

I had heard about the notorious burning of Jane Austen’s letters by her sister, Cassandra, but had somehow never really thought too much about what may have compelled her to do it. Miss Austen takes the historic literary mystery and reimagines it as a fascinating, witty and heartbreaking story of sisterly love, while creating in Cassandra a character as captivating as any Austen heroine. Keeley Hawes (The Durrells in Corfu, Bodyguard, Line of Duty) is fantastic in this new four-part series based on Gill Hornby’s bestselling novel — and it’s airing this month. It’s a page-turner on the screen, and thankfully, Passport members will be able to binge the entire story on May 4 when the first episode premieres on KQED 9. —Meredith Speight, Senior Director, TV Programming

Cold Summer, Season 1
