Come to KQED Member Day at Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos on May 2 and see the Biggest Little Air Show, presented by Peaxy. This awe-inspiring event pairs a thrilling aerobatic performance by air show pilot Vicky Benzing in her full-sized 1940 Boeing Stearman, along with demonstrations of exceptional radio-controlled models from the Baylands RC Flyers group. The San Carlos airport will close to regular traffic from 11am to noon so that the realistic jet- and propeller-powered model aircraft can roll down the runway and into the sky.

Each KQED member, plus one guest (total of two people per KQED MemberCard), can enjoy free admission to the Hiller Aviation Museum on Saturday, May 2, to watch the Biggest Little Air Show and visit the museum’s gallery. KQED members must present a current KQED MemberCard and photo ID at the museum’s membership desk. The Biggest Little Air Show runs from 10am to 1pm. The museum gallery is open until 5pm. Admission is on a first-come, first served basis. kqed.org/memberday

It’s an all-too-familiar scene on Australia’s 1,700-mile-long Stuart Highway, the road that cuts through the center of the outback: a kangaroo mother lying dead on the road, her baby still inside her pouch. But one man is determined to help these little orphans. Chris “Brolga” Barnes is a six-foot-six Australian outbacker with a heart of gold and a kangaroo sanctuary outside Alice Springs. Kangaroo Dundee follows Brolga and his team of helpers as they nurse the joeys back to life and eventually release them into the wild. Packed with warm, surprising, heart-wrenching and uplifting stories about individual ’roos, the three-part program also offers rare insight into the bizarre biology and fascinating family life of one of Earth’s most charismatic and unusual animals and reveals the extraordinary lengths to which people are prepared to go in order to protect the creatures they love.

Giles Clark heads up the Exotic Carnivores section at Australia Zoo in Queensland. He’s traveled the world expanding his knowledge of tigers living in captivity and has worked very hard on conservation efforts to protect them in the wild. Now he’s taking on an even bigger challenge — bringing up two Sumatran tiger cubs. Born in August 2013, the cubs are the first in the zoo’s 43-year history. The Sumatran tiger is a highly endangered species and the two cubs, Spot and Stripe, will be essential in helping to raise awareness about the plight of their wild cousins. They’ll also contribute to a vitally important international breeding program. But before any of this can happen, they have to grow up. Tigers About the House follows the cubs from shortly before their birth, through the challenges and exciting milestones of their first year and the moment they leave home.

More Award-Winning Student Films Each year KQED works to acquire the top short films coming out of U.S. film schools for Film School Shorts. The series’ third season starts this month, and we’ll wager it’s the best one yet. The new season kicks off Friday, May 8, at 11pm on KQED 9 with The Kármán Line. This can’t-be-missed drama starring Olivia Colman and Shaun Dooley is just one of the many award-winning films airing through June.

From a touching comedy set to a Harry Nilsson soundtrack (Humpty) to a gripping period drama that took home the gold at the 2014 Student Academy Awards (Above the Sea), this season’s colorful and provocative short films rival the latest multiplex features. And we’ve responded to viewer requests by including even more animation, including jaw-dropping stop-motion and mixed-media films.

(l. to r.) The Kármán Line, directed by Oscar Sharp, So You’ve Grown Attached, directed by Kate Tsang (both New York University).

If you haven’t already, connect with Film School Shorts on Facebook, and find out more on the website. kqed.org/fss You don’t have to wait for television broadcast dates to watch new films. A new student film premieres every other Wednesday on Film School Shorts’ YouTube channel. youtube.com/filmschoolshorts

New episodes of Film School Shorts air on KQED 9 Fridays at 11pm beginning May 8.

Funding for Film School Shorts is provided by Maurice Kanbar. Support is also provided by the members of KQED.

gentrification really means to people, from the newcomer to the old-timer to the business person. It’s an emotional and timely topic for many cities across the country and the Bay Area that are experiencing this kind of neighborhood change. Whether it’s establishing a presence in a neighborhood to produce an in-depth look at gentrification, launching a yearlong project called The Learning Curve to explore technology in education, or creating a special series that takes a close look at our country’s water usage, every week 12 million radio listeners trust Marketplace to bring a fresh and unique voice to their understanding of the economic world in which they live every day.

KQED Public Television

Marketplace airs weekdays at 4pm and Monday–Thursday at 6:30pm on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM.

It’s one thing to report that housing prices have soared in recent years — we can cite statistics: Americans pay roughly 58 percent more on housing today than in 2000 — but it’s another thing to bring economics to life. That is what Marketplace does every day — going beyond the numbers and taking a deep dive into the issues that affect us all. To address the topic of gentrification, this past fall Marketplace’s Wealth and Poverty team set up a temporary pop-up bureau in a changing Los Angeles neighborhood. At the intersection of York Boulevard and Figueroa Street (yorkandfig.com), reporters Krissy Clark, Noel King and the Marketplace team explored what

In the fascinating six-part series Alexander’s Lost World, Australian photojournalist and documentary filmmaker David Adams follows the footsteps of the earliest Greek explorers to discover the incredible descendants and cities of Alexander the Great’s Eastern empire. His epic 1,500-mile journey takes him from Greece across half the earth and into war-torn Afghanistan and Central Asia, follows ancient trade routes, and explores the traces of an extraordinary world that today is almost entirely erased. Alexander’s Lost World airs Sundays, May 17 and 24, starting at 8pm on KQED Plus.
